 Monday - Clear and Sunny

I woke up this morning and made a trip downstairs. I got dressed and went back for a nap. I woke up again a bit later and went downstairs to grab my breakfast. What I ended up doing was going outside and shovelling snow off the front steps. I didn’t get dressed up for going out, so I was a tad cold, but I got the steps cleared.

I came back into the house and made myself some breakfast. I had some porridge again and it was darn good. I enjoyed it. Upstairs where I ate, I watched a bit of news and a lot of YouTube.

I went downstairs a bit before 2 and grabbed my lunch. When I came back upstairs I watched another episode of Fringe and it was a good one. Peter discovered that he was from the other place. Hmm. Then, he disappeared.

The rest of my day passed as normal and F called me at 5:20 to say he was on his way back. I went downstairs a little early to get started on dinner. Tonight I made toaster oven chicken, boiled new potatoes, steamed Brussels sprouts and local baby greens salad. It was pretty darn good if I say so myself. We started eating just after 7 and a lot of the food disappeared. When I sat down, F and K were watching one of those dreadful programmes where people eat huge amounts of food for the glory of it. I asked F to change the station because people are starving in other parts of the world and I think showing those videos is obscene, or nearly so.

After dinner, I did the dishes and then went upstairs to relax. I thought that F would come up soon, but he didn’t. Finally, a little after 10pm I went downstairs with the kerosene tank and my towels. I asked F to carry the kerosene tank upstairs if he was going before me. I prepared the plastic garbage to go out and then took my shower.

When I finished, the kerosene tank was gone, but F was still in the living room. I turned down the hot water and went back upstairs. I watched Project Runway and it was good. A few minutes before it finished F came back upstairs. He was wearing his headphones and was basically self-absorbed.

We did have a little chat before he went to bed, but I’ve been feeling a little lonely. He spends lots of time with his phone these days and when I talk to him I feel like I’m interrupting something.

So, that’s about it for me. I’m not sure what I’ll get up to tomorrow. I hope I can do a bit of laundry, but we’ll see. Come back later if you like and hear all about my day. Until tomorrow….

Are the kerosene heaters the only way you have to heat your home? It sounds like a lot of work to fill them an haul them un and down stairs, not to mention having to tote the kerosene home.

Sadly, kerosene heaters are the most common way to heat homes here. I don't like them, they are smelly and dirty, but kerosene is fairly cheap to buy. In the rooms that have air conditioning, the air conditioner can be used as a heater too, but they are expensive to run.

Modern houses often have in-floor heating and some people have carpet heaters, but we don't have that upstairs, sad to say. I'm not a fan of Japanese houses at all. They are poorly made, and not well insulated at all.

I have a heater in the kitchen, it runs on electricity, but it is slow to heat the room. I usually start it an hour or two before I plan to cook. K often leaves the kitchen door open so it isn't as warm as I'd like when I start working in there!
