Tuesday - Sunny and warm

The last day of the year was okay.  I slept in a little bit as I went to bed late and didn't sleep that well. I got up and went upstairs.  I watched a bit of TV after breakfast and while my sister worked out.

I showered and then went upstairs to help my sister peel some eggs.  She had been asked to bring some devilled eggs to the New Years Party we were all invited to.  I offered to make them but needed a few ingredients first.  My sister had a quick lunch and then we headed out to the grocery store.

We picked up a few items and then came back.  I had my lunch, which was a frozen meal. It was good, but not quite what I wanted to have!

After lunch, I got started on the devilled eggs.  I wiped the eggs to make sure all the shells were off, then I made a regular devilled egg mixture and also a wasabi mixture.  It took a while, but was kind of fun as I haven't done anything like that in years.

I did a bit of laundry in the afternoon before I got changed to go to the party.  We piled into a vehicle and drove over.  I was surprised that my wasabi devilled eggs were a huge hit!  I probably should have made all of them with wasabi!  They disappeared fast.

We stayed at the party until just after midnight.  I wasn't feeling well at all so I didn't want to socialize too much.  I had a sore throat that made speaking difficult too, also swallowing anything was a bit tough.  Sigh.

My sister went back to the party after dropping off me and her kids.  She came back a little later with her husband.  We basically all went our separate ways after that. I went to my room to finish my laundry and supposedly to go to sleep. However, I'm still awake!

I'm not sure what I'm going to get up to on the first.  If my niece is up to it I might go out with her, or I might just stay in and try to recover before my trip on Saturday.  Come back later if you like and see  what I get up to.  Until tomorrow....Happy New Year!!!

Monday - Cold but clear and brisk

I went to bed early last night and I think it helped. I slept from 10 pm to 2:00ish, I tried to go back to sleep but it took a while.  I dragged myself upstairs around 8 am for breakfast.

This morning my sister did her workout and her son watched a hockey game.  Apparently there was some important game on that he couldn't miss!

My sister and I had lunch and then went out to run some errands.  We visited a drugstore and then I did some banking.  I got most of my stuff done, and then I walked over to the grocery store and met up with my sister.  We came back to the house and relaxed for a bit.

Later in the afternoon I helped my sister use her InstaPot. I'm thinking of buying one back in Japan so I'd like to see what can be done with it.  Today she did a beef roast with veggies.  I helped a little with the prep work for the veggies and also browning the roast.

We all had a lovely dinner tonight. It was very nice and I really enjoyed it. I don't get roast beef that much after all.

After dinner I came downstairs and put in a bit of laundry. I washed most of my new pants and hung some up to dry and some was dried in the dryer.  I went back upstairs and watched Aliens 3 and 4 with my sister and her husband.

When the fourth one was over, we all went our separate ways.

Tomorrow is the last day of the year and I'm not entirely sure what is going to happen.  I've been invited to go to my sister's friends house for the big celebration, but I'm not sure if that is a good idea.  I'm really not feeling all that well yet and I'm not sure if I want to stay up to midnight.  We'll see how things go.

Come back later if you like and see if I post tomorrow.  If I don't, have a happy new year!  Until tomorrow...

Sunday - Warmish and sunny

I went to bed early last night and I'm going to do that again tonight.  I did have a long day though.

I slept from about 11 last night to 7 this morning. I did feel better this morning, which is good.  I took a shower, had a quick breakfast and before I knew it, my friend was here.  We went to the Tim Horton's drive through and got a couple of drinks for the road. Sadly, the one I ordered had Earl Grey in it, so we had to swap our drinks.

We went over to Mayfield Common and started with Penningtons/Additionelle.  I did very well. I had received a gift card from this store for Christmas so I spent it all, plus a bit more.  I got some jeans, pants, some shirts and a slip. I was quite pleased with everything.

We made a stop for lunch.  We had lunch at Earls and it was fine.We had a big chat about our upcoming trip and set a few goals for ourselves.

We hit up Laura next and I got a few things.  Most of them were on big sale, so I was very happy!  We followed that up with a quick trip to Winners.  My friend got a suitcase and I bought a few shirts and a sweater.

After that, we drove back to Beaumont and my friend dropped me off.  I came in the house only to see my sister and her family waiting for me.  They'd just ordered dinner so I dropped my stuff downstairs and then came up to eat.  We had pizza, wings and pizza bread.  It was good, and I'm sure I ate too much.

I came downstairs, showed my sister my shopping and then put on my pyjamas and got into bed. It's only 8:30 pm now, but I'm thinking I'll go to bed very soon.  I feel quite bad. I really hope I didn't infect my friend today.

That's it for today.  I had a good day but my throat hurts a lot and my forehead is very hot.  Poor me! If I'm up to it, I'll try and post tomorrow too.  Stay tuned!  Until tomorrow....?

Saturday - Cold but clear

I'm writing a bit early as I'm feeling a bit under the weather and I will go to bed soon. Yes, really. Well, probably.

I had a quiet morning. I got up around 8 but it looked like no one was around so I came back to my room and stayed for a while.  I used the computer for a while and then went up when I heard noises.

I had a fairly quiet morning, which was nice.  I was planning to take my nephew out for lunch, but there was a hockey game on that he had to watch.  Actually, what happened was he watched the first period and then recorded the rest.  We went to a local Vietnamese restaurant and had a nice meal.  My sister was nice enough to drive us, and then pick us up afterwards.

When I got back I came downstairs and got into bed. I didn't try to sleep or anything, I was just cold.  That made me a bit nervous as everyone around me has been sick.  When I warmed up, I moved a bunch of stuff from my small suitcase to my big one.  I'm going to have to pack soon.

I did more research for my getaway and talked to my friend about getting together tomorrow.  We're going to meet up and have a day of shopping tomorrow.  Hurray.

I had dinner with my sister and her family. Her husband cooked us some steaks on the barbecue outside.  It was lovely to have a good steak.  We watched some episodes of The Big Bang Theory and then I came downstairs.  I'm hoping to get a bit more sleep tonight and that should help me feel better.  Fingers crossed anyway.

That's it for tonight.  It was a good day, except for my sore throat.  I hope it doesn't last long.  Come back later if you like and see what happens!  Until tomorrow....

Friday - Sunny and warmish

I went to sleep fairly early last night. I turned off the TV and went to bed around 11 pm.  I did wake up around 4, but soon went back to sleep for another 3 hours.  I turned off my phone overnight, which probably had a lot to do with my good sleep!

This morning I got up and had breakfast.  I showered and got ready to meet my friend.  We drove into the city and went to a restaurant that I had just received a gift card for.  We had a lovely meal, I had fish tacos, she had a veggie burger and we shared an order of yam fries.  Unfortunately, my gift card didn't work and my friend ended up paying for lunch.  Yikes.  I had the money for it, I just was so surprised that I didn't think of it at the moment it happened.

After lunch we went to AMA to see if they had any travel packages available for the time that I'm in Canada. They did. The upshot is that we're going to Vegas, baby!  Early in January, we'll fly down and have a few days of fun.

When we were finished there, we went to Starbucks for a quick coffee that we had to take out as there were no seats available.  We then went to Walmart for a few necessities for me. Unfortunately, since Sears and Zellers closed, there aren't too many stores left where I can get cheaper things that I need! I picked some undies up, and also got next year's Christmas Cards too!Yay me.

My friend drove me back to my sister's house. It was empty, but a little while later my brother in law came back. He took care of a house repair and I vegged.  When my sister and her son came back, she started preparing dinner. It was very casual tonight, just crackers, cheese and garlic sausage. Yum.  I did help a bit with the prep, so good for me.

We settled in a little later and watched Mortal Engines.  People seemed to like it a lot. Apparently, no one really liked last night's movie, Ad Astra. I preferred it personally, but really I like both films.  After the film, we all went our separate ways. My nephew was sweet enough to wait until I was downstairs until he turned off the lights.

On my schedule for tomorrow I'm planning to take my nephew out for lunch tomorrow. There's a Vietnamese restaurant within walking distance, although my sister hinted that she'd take us there if we ask nicely! He has hockey practice later on, so I'm happy I'll get to spend a little time with him.

So that's it for me for today.  My friend and I were walking around Edmonton without our jackets today. I'm not sure if it because we're crazy or because it was a little warm.  Either way, it was nice!

Oh, I told my brother in law and my sister about the card from the restaurant and they'll look into it.  The waitress said that it could be from a bad batch of cards, or it might not have been set up properly, so I hope that we'll find out what happened.

That's it for me for tonight.  Come back tomorrow for more info about my trip home!  Until tomorrow....

December 26, 2019

Thursday - Cold I think.  I didn't go out today.

Christmas came and went with its attendant gluttony and good cheer.  There were a lot of presents, some wonderful food and laughter with friends and family.  Most of my presents were appreciated so that was good.

I went to bed after midnight last night but fell asleep in front of the TV. I woke up to a combo of the TV going and my cellphone making noises when I received messages. I fell back asleep around 4 and then woke up around 7:30 but managed to snooze for another hour.  I got up and went upstairs and had breakfast.

Today I was quite busy at times.  I helped my sister do a bit of clean up from last night's party, then I did some of my laundry. Even though she has a washer and dryer, it took some time.  I watched a lot of bad reality TV and vegged until dinner.

After dinner I stayed upstairs for a bit and watched a couple of Thor movies.  I tried to knit but there wasn't enough light and I was too tired. I looked at a picture book of my family's trip to the UK and tried to watch Ad Astra but was falling asleep on it.  My sister chased me off to bed, so that's what I'm going to do after I sign off.  Probably.

It was a nice "family" day.  Tomorrow I'm meeting up with my friend to see if we can make some proper plans for my visit. I hope we can do something fun!

Come back later if you will and see what I get up to.  Until tomorrow....

December 24, 2019

Tuesday - Cold and cloudy

I woke up early this morning because I went to bed early last night.  I stayed in bed for a while watching telly, then got up and had breakfast and some tea.

I had a shower early on and got dressed.  When I came upstairs I got to work with my sister.  She brought up some chairs and I cleaned them. It took a while.

I went out with my brother in law to the liquor store, but I didn't find anything I really wanted. I got something to drink tomorrow, but I'm not sure if I'll like it. If I don't, I just won't drink it!

After lunch, I did a bunch of ironing for my sister. I didn't mind ironing for a while, but it got a bit boring after a while.

We had dinner, a tortiere pie and some veggies.  There was Christmas cake on offer too as well as a few chocolate almonds.  We watched the end of DieHard which was on TV and then put on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  It was fun to watch it again, although I did think about the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling at the moment.

Around midnight, we finished the movie and we all went our separate ways to sleep until tomorrow morning when we get to see what Santa has brought us!

And with that, I will wish you all adieu!  If you celebrate Christmas, have a good one.  If you don't, then I still hope you have a great day and I'll see you in a day or two....Merry Christmas!

December 23, 2019

Monday - Cold and a little snowy

I had a really strange night last night. I went to bed when we came back from the movie, but woke up 3 hours later and didn't go back to sleep for about 4 hours.  That meant I overslept and nearly missed my trip to Costco.  I made it however.

In Costco, it was much busier than the one I go to in Yamagata, but people were friendly and in good moods, so it didn't matter too much.  I found one thing that I wanted to buy, so put it in my cart and then my sister found me. We went to the checkout. She had a cart full so it took a while.  I was in line and then when it was my time, I didn't think to tell the woman that I was an International Member before she rang my stuff in.  That meant that she needed a supervisor to cancel the first transaction and they were all busy.  Oops.  It took about 10 minutes before one could come.  It was a little embarrassing, especially since I only had one item!

We came back to my sister's house and unpacked the vehicle.  We had quite a busy afternoon.  My sister did some meal prep for the future.  In the evening, the two of us made cookies!  We made some shortbread and also she made some Imperial Biscuits which she'd been thinking about making for years.  The baking went well and we made lots of cookies.

I actually went to bed quite early last night. I didn't turn on the TV at all, so went to bed around 10:30.  I slept until 2, but then managed to go back to sleep.  Yay for me.  I woke up at 6:30 and decided to blog.  Woot.

Come back later if you will to hear how my Christmas Eve-day goes.  Until tomorrow....

December 22, 2019

Sunday - Cold and crisp

Today was a busyish day.  I got up fairly early and went upstairs for breakfast.  I had a sleepy, quiet morning really. In the early afternoon I helped my sister make some mincemeat tarts.  It was fun to finally be doing some baking for a change. We didn't know how full to fill them or how long to cook them, but they ended up tasting quite nice!

After dinner some of us drove into Edmonton to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.  It was the first time seeing a movie this trip and of course it just started a few days ago so the theatre was quite full. The theatre was much fuller than it would be back in Japan.  I really enjoyed it.  I have a few quibbles about it, I think the dialogue was a little disjointed and there weren't enough conversations!

We drove back to Beaumont and all went to our separate rooms.  I got into bed and promptly fell asleep until 3 am when I got up and wrote this! I did manage to stay awake all day, and even through the movie, even though I yawned a bit.  (I wasn't bored, just jet lagged)

And that's it.  Tomorrow I think we're hitting up Costco. I'm not sure if we'll go to the close one or one in the city. It is so close to Christmas that I think it'll be crazy-crazy but who knows!

I'll try and write again later.  Until tomorrow....

Saturday - Snowy and cold

Today was a good day.  I got up and had breakfast, took a shower and got ready to go out.  There had been a bit of snow overnight, so I helped my sister to clear the driveway of snow. It was very light and fluffy, completely different from Tsuruoka's wet snow.

We drove into West Edmonton and went to the Mall.  We checked out a couple of shops. I went to Torrid for the first time and got myself a new dress.  It's just a simple "frock", but it is rather pretty. We went to a bra shop afterwards and I got fitted for a new bra.  Now I know my size so I can go and pick up a few hopefully cheaper bras for everyday too.

We came back to my sister's home and had lunch.  I had a bit of a rest, but not a sleep in the afternoon, then went upstairs and helped/got in her way with dinner prep.  She was making ribs with is something that I don't get to eat very often.  She was also using her Insta-Pot, so it was good for me to see it in use.

We had dinner in the evening and it was good.  We had ribs, salad and beans.

The plan for the evening was to watch Star Wars, the film before this new one to prepare us for going out tonight to see The Rise of Skywalker, but...I started to fall asleep, so they sent me downstairs to sleep.  I did. I fell asleep with the TV on and woke up around midnight.  At midnight, I got up, tried to use the computer but couldn't, then watched TV for quite a few hours until I got tired again. Jetlag and I are not good friends!

That's it for Saturday. With any luck, I'll be back later to give you a report on Sunday.  Until tomorrow....

December 20, 2019

Friday - Cold and crisp

Had a fairly good flight over to Canada. I was lucky enough not to have to sit beside anyone on my first two planes, so I was rather comfortable. The flight between Haneda and Vancouver was long though. I watched Shoplifters, a Japanese movie as it had English subtitles, and then tried to sleep. I managed for a bit, but a lad travelling alone had a nosebleed and the flight attendants accidentally woke me up while they were fussing over him. He was sitting behind and to the left of me.

My flight from Vancouver to Edmonton was late, and I was nearly asleep in the airport and on the plane.  When my sister met me at the airport in Edmonton, I was so happy.  I'm also glad that I brought along my packable down coat as it was a freezing -9 or so and my sweater wouldn't have cut it.

I've not really gone anywhere yet. I got a few groceries for myself yesterday and I went to the drug store today.  I spent a bit of yesterday wrapping presents because I couldn't bring them over wrapped.

It sounds like I'm going shopping tomorrow to WEM and on Sunday we'll have a family outing to see Star Wars, so I'm rather pumped about that.

Before I left Japan I gave F his very delayed birthday present. I got him a copy of Creed II, and I think he's already watched it twice. He's a huge fan of all things Rocky, so this was a good bet for him.  We've been texting each other quite a bit. He sends me pictures of his meals, I'm not sure why! I did tell him to eat all the things that I won't have in the house when I'm away though.

That's about it for now. It's the middle of the afternoon so I'm not sure if I'll post later on or not. Don't miss me too much.

Until tomorrow....?

December 17, 2019

Tuesday - Rainy but warmish

I woke up early this morning, got up and then went back to bed after F left. Of course, I overslept afterwards!

I had a fairly quiet but busy day. I spent time on my computer and then in the afternoon did more packing. I decided to take my suitcases separately, rather than one inside the other as I had planned. I think the one suitcase would end up being overweight that way and we wouldn’t want that!

F took some time off work and then went to see the doctor. After that, he came back to the house and we decided to go out for dinner. He suggested Nagomi, the soba/udon shop we like and I was fine with that. We went over and had a nice meal. K and I both had udon, F had soba. He didn’t like it all that much, but I really enjoyed my duck udon.

We brought K back to the house after the meal and then F and I went out. We went to the post office first and I mailed my nengajo and a late Christmas card.  Then, we went for coffee and dessert at Komeda.  We had a nice time but left after an hour or so.

We stopped in at the drugstore for some snacks and then came back to the house. I packed a couple of things, tried to check-in, but couldn’t as I was 7 minutes too early. I did check-in, then I took a shower and settled in to watch my telly.

And that’s about it. F has an appointment in the morning, but after that, I’m not sure what we’ll get up to. Around 4 pm we plan to make our way to the airport. If all goes well, I’ll be in Canada before I know it!

If possible, I’ll blog a bit from Canada, but I will be jetlagged like crazy for the first little bit.

I’m not sure when I’ll write you again…hopefully not too long from now.  Until...?

December 16, 2019

Monday - Grey day

I woke up this morning and then got up. I watched the news, the usual type of thing. I went downstairs around 10:30 and bumped into K. She was still in her nightgown and asked where F was. I told her he was at work and she seemed surprised. She vanished soon afterwards.

I had a quiet morning and breakfast. As often happens, I got very sleepy and needed to take a nap. I slept for a few minutes and then got up and decided to do some laundry. Usually, I only do it in the morning, but decided now was the time!

I grabbed my lunch when I was downstairs and ate and watched a movie that I’d taped last night. It was okay, it was disjointed because I had to keep going downstairs to grab laundry.

After lunch, I got out my big suitcase and started packing. I packed the small case and weighed it. I think that it should be fine. However, I don’t know if it will be fine inside the bigger one with more clothes for me. I may have to take two suitcases…no problem really.

After 5 pm, I went downstairs and started to put things together for dinner.  F called a bit later than I thought he would, but said he was on his way.  I got many things ready to go but didn’t want to cook anything until he arrived.  Then, when he did arrive he seemed rather insulted that I hadn’t cooked yet.  I was hurt by that. I want to serve hot food, not cold.

I cooked and it was fine, and quite fast. We had pork saute, salad, pumpkin soup, and sautéed mushrooms.  F and K also had rice.  Nobody said much about dinner, I guess it wasn’t much liked. Sigh.

I had the honour of being allowed to clear the table, wash the dishes and dry the dishes all by myself. I was so happy to have the award.  I listened to a couple of podcasts which did make the time go a little faster.

I went upstairs and there was F lying in bed with the lights off. I suggested going to the store, and the post office for me, but he wasn’t interested. Around 9 pm he perked up a little and asked if I’d like to go now. I said no, I was going to watch Sherlock.  Then at 10 pm when I was gathering my pyjamas and my towel to go downstairs for my shower he asked if I was ready to go to the store. I wasn’t. There’s not much for dinner tomorrow. I could do pasta and vegetables probably or whatever, but I’m not sure that I really want to do anything! It might sound mean, but I do have other things that are more important to do.

F’s neck is bothering him right now, and he thinks he’s getting a cold. Neither thing is good, the cold is the scariest for me as I’m travelling and who wants to be sick while they travel? NOT ME. That’s who.

I watched a bit of TV after my shower and have been trying to get things ready for my trip. Tomorrow is my last full day here so I need to finish packing and deciding what to take with me and what to leave. I need lots of luck with that!

That’s it for me today. Come back later if you like and see what I get up to. I will probably blog tomorrow night, but if I don’t, I’ll catch you from the other side of the Pacific! Until tomorrow….

December 15, 2019

Sunday - Cloudy but not rainy

We all slept in very, very late this morning. I think I was asleep before F last night, and I went to bed around 4! I woke up a couple of times to use the ‘loo and then because Lady Gaga sang at 11:00am.  I got up around then, F was around the same time too.  He took his mother off to the onsen which left me with a few minutes alone to take care of some chores. Yay.

I vacuumed my room under the desk, I refilled the kerosene tank in our room’s heater, and I did a couple of other things too. I also did a more personal chore, and I got dressed!

F and K didn’t get back until 2:45 or so and then wanted to have lunch!  Where?  Most places finish lunch around 2 so this was really too late. F made me pick a place so I chose Gusto. It’s cheapish, it’s fine and it was open.  We all piled in the car and went. Today’s meal was fine. I had some chicken and ordered a plate of fries to share, K had her usual mackerel grill and F had pork on rice. I think we were all okay with the food. The fries went down a treat. I’m leading K down the path of western food!

After dinner, we went to the hundred yen shop nearby. I was looking for luggage tags. At the shop in S-Mall, they had luggage tags, but they were silly animal ones with lots of edges and were just asking to catch in machinery and get ripped off. At least S-Mall’s store had some. This shop didn’t. K and F walked around the store together. She used a buggy like a walker, I went off on my own.  I got a few things to liven up someone’s Christmas Present and then we left.

We came back to the house and dropped off our shopping and K.  She’d had a busy day for her. Two outings! Wow.

F and I went out again to another hundred yen shop. It took a bit of looking around, but I did find luggage tags, so I bought 4. I find that they do get broken easily (even the more expensive ones) so I wanted extra on hand. I picked up a couple of bags for Christmas wrapping and a ball of gorgeous purple lace cotton. I had to. I picked it up, considering it. I put it back and then it fell off the shelf, trying to fall into my cart. Obviously, we were meant to be together!

After our shopping I was thirsty. I suggested getting a drink, so we ended up at Starbucks. Although I really wanted to try that new Christmas drink with french fries in it, I didn’t. F just had coffee so I had a simple iced tea. No big deal.

We drank our drinks and spent some time in the coffee shop until we got cold, then went over to the book store. F bought a book and I bought a pen.  We left and got our groceries along the road.

Following the groceries, we picked up some kerosene for the house and some gasoline for the car. I suggested going back to the house to drop things off, which we did.

F was demanding I pick the dinner place again, so I did. I suggested Coco Ichibanya, so we went there. I think F doesn’t like it too much, or he thinks it is overpriced. Then again, he thinks everything is, including his beloved ramen. They had soup curry on again so I was happy. I had that, just the basic one tonight and F had a tonkatsu curry that also looked good. We skipped drinks, so the meal came to less than 2000yen, which I think was very reasonable.

We came back to the house and chilled out for the next while. I noticed there was a Keanu Reeves/Winona Ryder movie (Destination Wedding) on at 11 so I watched that. I really enjoyed it! It was rather amusing. When I checked other movies on tonight I found a couple on the movie channel so I have set my DVR. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to watch them tomorrow so I might have to erase them, but you never know.

I also finished another decoration for Christmas Trees. I’m up to 4 now. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get any more done or not. I do hope so as I’d like to give some to my friends for a personal Christmas present.

As always, come back here tomorrow and see what I get up to. Tomorrow I have to start packing my suitcase to see if I’m taking one case or two…It sounds sooo exciting, doesn’t it?  Until tomorrow….

December 14, 2019

Saturday - Rainy and windy

We slept in a little bit but did get up around 10:00ish. I had some breakfast and then got dressed for going out.  F and I went to our doctor’s office. As usual, we had a case of hurry up and wait there. I took my knitting and got almost a complete round done, so that was good. It really does help me relax a bit.  After seeing the doctor we headed back to the house to pick up K and to go for lunch.

We went to Kintaro Sushi and had a lovely lunch. It was so rainy when we arrived at the restaurant, that we sat in the car for a few extra minutes so we wouldn’t get wet!

After lunch, F brought us back to the house and we came in.  F and I came upstairs. I watched some shows on YouTube and then got very tired and took a nap. I slept for about an hour.

F and I got ready to go out and he called a taxi for us. We went over to Hyakkenbori and had our lovely Christmas Dinner. A lot of places in Tsuruoka have their Christmas events really close to Christmas. Sadly, because I’m leaving, I wasn’t able to go to any of them. What we did instead was take advantage of the Christmas Dinner at Hyakkenbori.  We had a very nice meal and a few drinks in a lovely location.  I really wanted to have a nice meal with F before I left.
Our appetizers.  Canapes, shrimp cocktail and a salad.  I gifted
the mussel to F as I don't eat them.

Salmon Carpaccio with salad

Roasted honey-lemon chicken and vegetables

Mushroom cream pasta

Chocolate mousse, matcha & sweet potato tart,  gateau chocolat
Funny story, the waitress came over just after we got our dessert with new narrow spoons for the mousse as the ones
she'd given us wouldn't fit in the glass!
You-know-who and F!

After our meal, we decided to walk to Showa-dori, the drinking area and go to an izakaya for more drinks and food.  It was cold, but it wasn’t raining until we got quite near the izakaya.

We had a light second meal of yakitori and some vegetables.  F had another drink, I had some oolong tea. I did have a drink at the other place with my meal, no big deal.

We came back to the house by taxi and came upstairs. I got our room warmed up, then took a shower. When I finished that, I watched a little telly.  F seemed to go to bed, but had just got up and had a late-night snack.

I had no idea what I’m going to get up to tomorrow. My time here is winding down and I have a lot of things that I must do…like pack my suitcases! Come back later if you will and see what actually happens. Until tomorrow….

Friday (the 13th) - Warmish and nice, then rainy and cloudy

I woke up with my alarm this morning and promptly turned it off. I went to bed a little late yesterday so decided to sleep on.  F came back around 9 I think and he went to bed too.  I woke up at 11 somewhat surprised that I had slept so late!

F wanted to go out for lunch so I thought of a few places, but he wasn’t too hungry. He’d had a hotel buffet for breakfast. Then he decided he wanted to bring his mother. I had to change the places since my requests weren’t K friendly. We decided on a place that we literally haven’t been to in years. I had a second choice just in case. Then K decided not to come. Oh well, we still tried the place. It was open, so we went in and had a very nice lunch. We both had pork, F’s was ginger pork and mine was a pork steak with gravy. We both liked it a lot. I hope we’ll go back sometime.

We just had time to go and get K a bento and for me to go back to the house and floss and brush my teeth. Yes, F had finally got me in at my dentist! We went in and I was surprised that we spent about 2 hours there. I was x-rayed and photographed and had a bit of a cleaning done. I’ll have to have quite a bit of work done next time I go, which will be in January when I get back.

After my appointment, we went to an electric shop to pick up some more blank CDs and a new SD card for the car’s stereo.  The one we have seems to be full. I do have a lot of CDs after all!

We went for coffee and cake to Komeda and were there for an hour or so. I had real coffee today, not decaf as it was early, so did F. During our time there, F said that he wasn’t feeling well. He’d been trying to get me to think of dinner, but I wasn’t hungry yet. In the end, he suggested getting bentos at the grocery store.

We went to the store and checked out the deli. I suggested doing something similar to bentos but not quite. I suggested us getting some different dishes and then having what we wanted from them. It would be a little like eating family-style from the grocery store. He agreed to try it so we got some chicken, some french fries, some renkon and some fried rice. We brought it back to the house and heated it up.  K had already gone to bed, but F got her up for the feast!

Dinner was nice. I liked that we weren’t having bentos exactly and we could choose how much of something we wanted.

After dinner, F washed the dishes and I dried, then we came upstairs. I watched some TV and F went to bed with his computer.

And that was my day. Tomorrow we have a doctor’s appointment in the late morning and our Christmas dinner out tomorrow night. Come back later…perhaps Sunday if I’m not up for writing tomorrow.  Until tomorrow….?

Thursday - Rainy and windy

Today was a good day. I didn’t get anything much accomplished, but that’s okay. I hope.

I got up early and watched the news. When it was over, I sorted out my laundry. I ended up doing a couple of loads of it.

I caught up with my TV on the DVR today too. Yay me. I need to delete the show that F and I gave up on. It’s a bit sad as it was a good show, but now that he has his computer in use, he doesn’t want to watch TV with me.

I got a lot of little things done today. I set aside some of my clothes for the trip, I wrote the rest of my nengajo and I wrote a chatty email to a friend far away.

F had made arrangements yesterday to have very nice bento boxes for K and I delivered tonight. I was listening for the doorbell but never heard it. I did hear something downstairs so went down.  The guy from the sushi place was already inside the genkan. I was really surprised.  Anyway, I paid him and then set out everything on the table.  K and I had a lovely feast. We’ve ordered these sets before. I had chicken cutlet and sushi, K had sushi, soba and tempura. They both came with chawanmushi and soup.  We had a grand old meal. K ate everything, which surprised me. Maybe she skipped lunch in anticipation? I’m not sure.

After we finished, I washed all the dishes and the sushi boxes and put them by the door. F or K will put them out tomorrow for them to pick up.

In the evening I came upstairs. I watched a bit of TV, I also got stuck into things on my computer. I printed more address labels for myself, I wrote my nengajo and I even made a cd and printed liner notes for it. I was busy, even if it doesn’t sound like it.

Tomorrow F is off work and will probably get to the house early.  I’m not sure what he’ll do in the morning, but in the afternoon I finally have a dentist’s appointment. I won’t really have time to get any work done if it is necessary.  I don’t know what he was thinking.  I asked him at least 4 months ago to make an appointment for me but he kept putting it off. When he did go in to see if I could go, she was too busy on the day he wanted!  My dentist is good so she’s always busy.

After that, I’m not sure what we’ll get up to. There are no new movies in English this weekend, which is disappointing.

Come back later if you aren’t busy and see what I get up to. Until tomorrow….

Wednesday - Sunny and warm

I had a great day today. It was a good one.  Hurray for that.

I got up this morning and did my usual news watching, although I didn’t let myself snooze too much. Around 10 I went downstairs and made a piece of toast for myself, while I was down there, the postal worker rang the doorbell. He had his hands full. I received a box and a card for me. Yay!

I got dressed and as I was doing that found a couple of shirts for myself that I had almost forgotten about. I found a dressy one for my Christmas dinner, and a nice casual one for my lunch today.

I got dressed and went downstairs to wait for my friend. It was so nice outside that I didn’t want to wait inside. K asked me into her room, but I told her I wanted to out. My friend arrived very soon afterwards so it was fine.

We drove off to the Foodever building and had a yummy lunch at Farinamore, the pasta restaurant.  My friend was able to have a meal there that met her requirements and I was too.  I had a steamed vegetable starter and salmon and spinach cream fettuccine.  It was lovely.  My friend had a persimmon and nut salad which she raved about and a pasta dish of cod and cabbage with an oil sauce. We finished with a glass of iced tea. It was a tad expensive, but honestly, very nice.  After lunch, we went over to S-Mall and had a drink in Doutors while we gabbed away.  Sad to say, she had to leave for work so we said goodbye and went our separate ways.

I killed a few minutes by checking my favourite websites on my phone and then walked over to my hairdresser’s salon.  As usual, I got a great cut and it was nice. Unusually for her, we got lots of interruptions today. I was worried that it flustered her, but she seemed to be okay. I’m fairly easy-going too, which I hope helps.

After I was done, I paid and walked back to the mall. I did a little shopping for me and for a special someone.  After that, I had an ice-cream at Baskin-Robbins and then went to Doutors again to wait for F to be finished work.

When he finished he came to meet me and I bought him a drink.  We sat and chatted for a few minutes and then decided that we should go and order dinner for K and me tomorrow night since his app wasn’t working.  We drove off and talked to the person who runs the sushi delivery place.  He took our order and then we left. Yay.

We had dinner in a little Japanese restaurant called Misono. We’ve been there a few times, I like it for the most part.  F got to have some noodles, although NOT ramen (snort), and I had Oyakodon. That was quite nice.

We bought some groceries for my lunch and also for K’s dinner and brought them back to the house.  K was still up. I think she’d had a visit from her daughter during the day. She looked quite cheerful tonight, and took some of the bento we brought her, but not all of it.

I came upstairs and caught up with my computer stuff, then went downstairs to take care of the burnable garbage in the kitchen. I got that done and then came upstairs again. I did a temporary patch on the back of F’s pocket. I don’t have time for some real sashiko there, but I’m hoping the patch will hold it from getting worse until I can come back and do a better job of it.

I watched a little TV and then tried to catch up on my blogging. And here I am.

Tomorrow F has a bonnenkai, so K and I will be single ladies. I told her it was our bonnenkai tomorrow night. I’m not planning on drinking though!

That’s about it for me. Come back later if you like and see what I get up to. Until tomorrow….

Tuesday - Sunny and warmish

I realized before I went to bed last night that I had forgotten to set up the plastic garbage for F to take out. Instead of running downstairs and taking care of it in the middle of the night I shrugged my shoulders and said,” Oh well.”

I got up this morning at a reasonable time…on time actually. I watched some news or a debate about Brexit from the BBC, then the news from another channel.  I was a bit snoozy this morning but didn’t go back to sleep.

I did a load of laundry and hung it up in the room. I need to do some on Thursday too if I want to be ready to leave next week. And I do.

I had a fairly quiet afternoon. I spent most of my time hand-sewing some velcro to a bag that I bought. I’m going to use it as a temporary bag on the plane. The velcro should keep it shut and hopefully, I won’t lose anything. I pricked my fingers a couple of times on the pins I used to hold it and they are still sore. Ouch.

F called around 5:30 tonight and said he was on his way.  I went down to the kitchen and got busy. I really was today. I baked potatoes for us, steamed some frozen veggies, baked some chicken, heated up some soup and plated some salad.  The potatoes were lovely, the chicken was good and so were the veggies. Dinner got pretty good reviews from both K and F so that was something!  There was even some dessert, pudding that was just about to expire.  I was pretty organized in the kitchen for a change and I didn’t get upset with anyone, which surprised me.

F washed the dishes afterwards and I dried, then we went out to the onsen.  F took his bath while I took a chair in the lobby with my drink. I did a bit of knitting and also listened to some podcasts. I got sleepy with my knitting, so I stopped and just listened for a bit.

After the onsen, we popped into Komeda Coffee for some decaf and wifi. It is getting to me a bit how F won’t even talk to me when we are out. He just doesn’t hear me.  I used my phone a lot too so I’m not entirely innocent of phone crimes.

F and I came back to the house. I took a shower and then settled in to watch the last episode of the first season of The Handmaid’s Tale.  I’ve been enjoying it and getting a bit freaked out by it in equal portions. I think that season two is one of the shows that I will record on the DVR while I’m gone!

And that’s about it.  It’s late now and I have an early lunch date with a friend, so I really should get some sleep. Come back tomorrow if you will and hear all about my day. Until tomorrow….

Monday - Sunny and warm

I woke up before my alarm this morning. I was so surprised! It was only 5 minutes before, but that was very unusual. I didn’t go back to sleep either. I got up, turned on the water pot and the TV and watched the news.

I had my breakfast and did a load of laundry. I didn’t do as much as I should have, but it was something at least. I have to do more tomorrow, but that’s okay.

I had a lovely day. It was quite warm so I didn’t need to run the heater in the room upstairs all the time.  The morning was interesting as the Yamabushi were out and about collecting funds.  Some of them had conch shell horns and they were blowing them. I thought they sounded like a whale or a bull! I was hoping to take a photo as one walked by the house, so I opened the window and got my phone ready to snap a photo. Instead of walking by, he came into our yard though. I figured that he’d hear if I took a picture so I didn’t. Sorry.

I got a bunch of my nengajo written, and all of the cards are now printed too. I’ve made the executive decision not to send to one or two people, just because I haven’t heard from them in a few years.

F texted me that he made a reservation for us on Saturday night to have our Christmas party together. I’m excited. I think it’ll be nice.  I’ll have to find something to wear though.

When F called to say he was coming back, I reminded him he needed a few ingredients for tonight’s dinner. He was cooking. Yay!  He took a while to get back here, but the drive back from work, plus a trip to the grocery store can be quite difficult during the driving home hours. He came in and after changing clothes got to work.

He made a nabe and it was really good. I’m not lying here, if I didn’t like it I would say so. He managed to get everything about balanced taste-wise. He even put a few slices of yuzu in the nabe pot too. That added a little something. He’d also bought some sashimi. It was okay, but I didn’t need it. I helped him a little, got in his way a tad, but tried to show him that even though I wasn’t cooking, I could take things to the table. (I’m trying to teach him so he’ll help me someday.)

Dinner was great and we all had seconds and one of us even had thirds. It wasn’t F or me!

F washed the dishes, I dried them and put them away. A little after that, we went out to Starbucks.  I tried their new holiday frap, and F had his favourite one, so we were quite happy. Of course, our drinks were finished long before we left the joint!

We went to the grocery store and picked up a few things for my lunches this week and also some snacks.  We drove back to the house and F had a little feast. I watched a couple of TV programmes and sewed up a little something. I have a bit more sewing to do tomorrow too.

And that’s about it. It was a good day. Tomorrow night I’m going to cook and I’m debating between making scalloped potatoes or baked potatoes. Both are a bit of work, but different types. Hmm. I’ll sleep on it!

Come back later if you like and hear all about my day. Until tomorrow….
