Sunday - Cloudy and grey, a little rain at night.

An interesting day. I overslept as usual, but when I woke up, I discovered why. F had shut the bedroom door so I couldn't hear anything from the living room, and outside it was fairly grey and dull. My body thought it was still night! (That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!)

We watched Olympics, or tried to. Yesterday, there was a huge earthquake in Chile and now a tsunami was heading towards Japan. All the channels were broadcasting big maps of Japan with the areas highlighted that might be hit by the water. Fortunately for us, we are on the other side of Japan and there were no warnings for us.

We went to Sakata for our very late lunch. We went to Kappa-sushi. I like it there sometimes because they have actual tables to sit at, and some non traditional sushi items that I like. We had a very nice lunch and then came home afterwards. F had his tv in the car on watching the skating extravaganza, which was always my favourite part of the whole Olympics. I wasn't too happy as I think it's dangerous, and the tv makes me a bit queasy watching it. Anyway, we got home and watched the tail end on TV.

We had a quiet night in basically. We watched Burn After Reading on WOWOW. It was as silly and odd as the first time we saw it. Then, F found more Olympics and watched that.

Around 11, F started talking about being hungry and at 11:30 I suggested going out. We went to Gusto for a very very late dinner. It was kind of fun though. I tried to get him to stay out and go drinking afterwards, but he kept saying things like, "I have to go to work tomorrow!" so, we came home. Bummer.

After even more Olympics (seriously...am so glad they end soon) he went to have a bath and then bed. I haven't gone to bed yet. But I will soon.

Tomorrow, I have to finish writing my column. I have an idea, but it's not the usual traditional movie review thing I do. Hmm. What will I write about? It's my secret! Night.

Saturday - Sunny and warm. Gorgeous day.

It never fails. Yesterday, my day off, was horrible weather, all rain and wind. Today, my work day, was gorgeous, beautiful and springlike.

Last night I went to bed before F. I left him sitting at his computer doing some printing or writing on it. I woke up at 4 and he was still there, not sleeping. I suggested he come to bed soon. At 8 this morning I woke up and he was on the couch snoring away.

We had a few choice words this morning. Originally I had asked him to take me to the doctor when he went as my first class of the day had cancelled. However, F had decided that he wanted to go early as usual. I didn't. Bullying and nastiness ensued from both parties. I did finally go, I wanted to see if I should be worried about the swelling on my leg that has been there for 8 months, since my bike accident. The doctor seemed surprised that it was still big and gave me that sticky plaster stuff to put on it, plus an ice pack. I'm really not sure why the ice pack as the injury is old, but whatever. I also got a blood test in case there's an infection or something.

After the doctor's office, things got better between us. It was too early to go for lunch, so we went for coffee to Doutors. Except, when we got there, we both had their new drink, Marsala Chai. It was very good, but too sweet for us. Why are drinks so sweet in Japan? I don't get it.

We discussed our lunch options and decided to go to a place we went once before. We were on the way there, when F suggested another place I know he's been dying to try. So, we went there instead. It was a local spa/farmer's market combination place, they had a buffet meal for 1200 yen. It was rather interesting. You could buy the full set for 1200 yen or buy your plates for lunch. For example, the large entree plate cost 500 yen, the miso soup bowl was 150 yen, the salad bowl was 200 yen.... Most of the food was grown locally and also cooked by people in the area. A neat idea really. The food was quite good.

After lunch, F drove us home and we relaxed for a while. I showed him how to do some printing with his computer. I remember how confusing it all was at first. Then, it was 2 pm and time to go to work.

My student came right on time and we had a good class. She read a book on Grey Wolf and she was moved/impassioned enough to write a 4 page commentary on it. It was interesting. I was quite impressed with her to be honest! My second class ended up cancelling again. She's rescheduled and promises to come next week. Sigh. I spent my spare time reading the newspapers and working on a book list for my first student on Tuesday.

I called F and he joined me at my school, addressed an envelope for me, and then helped me blow that popsicle joint!

We drove out to the big mall to see if there was a movie we could see. There was, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. We were early, so we had a not very healthy dinner at KFC and then went to the movie. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's nice to see a fairly intelligent film that is okay for teens.

We came home afterwards via the grocery store. We got home a little bit before Harper's Island, which finished tonight. Before it started, we watched some of the skating from last night and they FINALLY showed Joannie Rochette's skate. She wasn't perfect, but under the circumstances, it was understandable. And hey, Harper's Island! Oh my goodness! It kind of crumbled right at the very end, but gruesome and scary and fun. I'm not a horror fan by any means so I was surprised how much I liked it!

And that was about that. I'm tired and I need to get my beauty sleep. I don't know what we'll do tomorrow, but hopefully, we'll have a good day off together. Night.

Flick Picks 2010 - February

Updated February 27, 2010
As I never have time for a writing a full length review, I list and write a quick review of the films I see at the cinema.

Movies take a long time to reach Japan, so for people outside Japan, these might make good rental choices. For people in Japan I'll hopefully give you an idea if you want to spend your hard-earned yen on these movies.

Please comment if you agree or disagree with my reviews. I enjoy feedback!

4) Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief - Logan Lerman, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Catherine Keener (February 27, 2010)
A fun time at the movies. Percy Jackson discovers that he has a rather famous father, Poseidon. Percy is a demigod, a half god with interesting powers. He has been accused of stealing Zeus's lightning bolt and if he doesn't return it, the gods will go to war.

It starts a little like Harry Potter or The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, but by the end become a rollicky fun ride that's suitable for teens and up. This may be the first of a series. Bring 'em on I say, bring 'em on!

3) It's Complicated - Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, Steve Martin (February 20, 2010)
A rom-com for the over 50's has some big laughs, but ultimately isn't as fulfilling as it should be. Meryl is wonderful, Alec Baldwin shines as her ex, but Steve Martin sadly lets things down. If you don't feel like going for a chocolate croissant afterwards, you must be dieting!

2) The Lovely Bones - Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz, Susan Sarandon, Saoirse Ronan(February 7, 2010)
A very disappointing version of the difficult-to-read-but-too-hard-to-put-down novel. While visually stunning, there is something lacking in Peter Jackson's version of The Lovely Bones. When I finished reading the novel, I cried; when the movie was over, I was glad. It didn't have an impact on me and I feel like it really should have.

Fourteen year old Susie Salmon disappears on her way home from school one night and is never seen again. The story told by Susie is of how her family tries to cope with their loss.

Fans of the book probably won't like it, and it won't make viewers want to read the book. Stay home. Don't bother.

Friday - Rainy.

An okay day today. I got up early, believe it or not, stayed up for an hour and then went back to bed. The weather was awful, the sky was dark, there was nothing on TV and I decided to go back to bed. I set my alarm for an hour so that I wouldn't sleep all day, and then nodded off. I was just starting to have a good dream when I heard movement from my living room. What? Ack. I opened my eyes to find my husband back home. Sigh. He'd come by to use the washroom and have something to eat. I stayed in bed.

When I got up, he was gone. I spent a lot of the day on my computer doing work for the school. I watched Medium, and managed to avoid most of the skating.

I popped out to the post office to mail off a bookmooch I got yesterday, and to pay a bill. It was raining so hard it was unbelieveable. I got quite wet from the rain, and also from being splashed by idiot drivers.

At home again, F came home fairly early, and then we went out. We went by my apartment first to set the heater, then to Yoronotaki, the izakaya. We had some okay food. F ordered a seafood nabe that I didn't like much, and I wasn't able to order my favourite food there because of my tooth problem.

We came home and had a quiet evening together. I did a lot of downloading, and F did a lot of translating for me. He is such a sweetie! He was trying to use his new computer, but couldn't figure out how to work it. It meant that I was trying to run back and forth between the two computers, and try to figure out what his was saying as it was in Japanese.

I watched the two episodes of Harper's Island that were on tonight. It was properly scary. I would have been more scared if I hadn't cheated and read whodunnit and why on the internet last week.

Anyway, tomorrow I'm not as busy as usual. I may go to the doctor to see about the bruise/bump on my leg. It's been there since July, so I'm wondering if it'll ever disappear.

So, that's it for me. I'll talk to you tomorrow night, most likely. Night!

February 25, 2010

Thursday - Sunny and warm.

A pretty good day today. My alarms didn't work quite as well as I had planned, but I didn't oversleep too much. I got up, and drank coffee and did some computer stuff before showering.

In the afternoon I watched last week's ER. It was good and made me wonder about tonight's show. I also watched Medium and then a British drama called Unforgiven that was really good. I'm sorry I missed most of it.

I biked off to work a little before 5 pm and it was still light out. Yes! That means I don't have to leave so early again. I mean, today for example my class didn't start until 7, so why should I be at my school 2 hours early? Anyway, when I got there I did some work, prepping for classes for Saturday and next week. I read a bit as well, which was nice.

My student and I had a good lesson. We talked about blogs. Her blog has recently changed so she gave me the new address. We had a good chat about ice-skating and I told her my theory that Japanese ice skaters have no idea what constitutes a good costume. She was too polite to disagree!

After class, I did paper work, cleaned up and then called my husband. He sounded...different on the phone. When he arrived at my school I got a strange vibe off him. He said he was just tired. We drove home, and the first thing he did was to flop on the bed. Hmm.

I checked email then started working on dinner. When it was ready, I asked if he wanted any but he said he didn't. He basically went to bed at 9:30 and has slept ever since. It made for a lonely evening for me. I ate dinner which was okay, not one of my better efforts, then washed dishes and watched ER. Tonight was the season finale. I taped it for F so I hope he'll be able to watch it soon.

And that's about it for me. I've had a quiet evening in front of my computer. I did try and make hubby change into his pj's, but he isn't going to bother. I hope he's feeling better tomorrow. I don't want him at home with me, I have too much I need to do.

As a little parting note, today was the 25th anniversary of my mother's death. She died suddenly one night when I was home from college for spring break. I always miss her, but these days I'm more philosophical about how we would have gotten on. We had a lot of things in common, but I think I'm a little bit kinder, at least about some things. I'm also more assertive than she was.

That's it for me. Night.

February 24, 2010

Wednesday - Warmish and sunny. Gorgeous day.

I slept in today and I wasn't supposed to, so I was a bit angry with myself. I have changed the times of my alarms for tomorrow in hope that the different schedule will make me feel a bit more like getting up. That's the plan at the moment.

F phoned me during the day to say the dentist has set up an appointment for me with the dental surgeon next month. I'm quaking in my boots, but it should just be a look-see, rather than the actual surgery. Yikes. F keeps insisting I'll have to have an MRI which I think scares me more than anything else. When they do them on Grey's Anatomy, nasty things always happen afterwards!

During the afternoon I watched some of the Women's Short Program skating. I know that there's a battle of sorts between Mao Asada and Kim Yu-na, but I was really only interested in one skater, Joannie Rochette. Her mother died very suddenly on Sunday and she had to skate today (Tuesday in Canada.) She skated her heart out and cried afterwards, and I think so did most people watching. I know I did. She's currently 3rd in the competition and hopefully will be able to stay in the medals, or even move up.

I did laundry today and also watched Project Runway (yay!) which was about making a costume for the female athletes to wear in the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics. It was a cool competition. I think the judges picked the right person to send off. I'm not sure if I'd have picked the same winner, but her outfit was okay.

Today for brunch I had something different. I made myself a breakfast burrito...I scrambled a couple of eggs and put them in a tortilla shell with some cheese. Then, I had a taco too. Yum.

I headed off for work and stopped at the drugstore. I bought myself a new eraser, amongst other things. The eraser is a plastic case with a refillable center. It looks cool. My eraser is old and I don't like it much, so this might be a good thing to have.

My class tonight was good. The student had studied a bit, but he needs to study more. Today he learned a few new words. I hope he really learned them. Next week he gets a spelling test! Ha ha!

After work, I prepped another class, did a bit of paperwork and read a bit. I called F and he came to get me. We had dinner tonight in Grado near our apartment. It was quite good. We had chicken and pork. When we finished dinner we went over to the supermarket. I had suggested a nabe for tomorrow night, but F got a bit on his high horse about using a bought base (For the record, I HATE the nabe base that he makes, it's tasteless and bitter.) So, I decided not to ask him what he'd like and decided to make something different. And I will. Tomorrow night will be a pork and veggie stirfry. So there!

We came home, and F watched skating. I didn't mind too much, the first time they showed all the Japanese and then Asian skaters, but I got a bit shirty when they started showing them again, and not even mentioning the fact that a Canadian was in 3rd place. Luckily, it was time to watch Ugly Betty so I changed the channel. It was a fun episode, fun but a bit odd. Amanda got fired, along with other staff, and it was up to Betty to arrange a meeting with someone who could back the magazine.

And that was it. My day. It wasn't too bad really. Tomorrow I have only one class again, and it's later in the evening. I don't have a lot planned for the daytime, but you never know just what will come up. Night!

February 23, 2010

Tuesday - Sunny and clear. Lovely day!

I woke up this morning, got up for a few minutes, decided there was nothing pressing happening and then I went back to bed for a while! Sue me.

During the rest of the day I spent time doing some printing for my school, checking out things on the internet and generally enjoying myself. I watched an interesting double feature on WOWOW today. It was WarGames with Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy, and Eagle Eye with Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan. They worked rather well as a movie pairing. It was interesting how well WarGames stood up...oh, the technology has moved on of course, but the story was quite gripping. I haven't seen it in a long time. It was one of the last movies that I took my mum out to see.

I biked over to the school, stopping at a convenience store on my way to pay a bill. Last night, I found our phone bill and asked F if I should pay it on my way to work. I didn't mind of course because I can go right by the 7-11, so it wasn't much trouble...and he always forgets to pay it!

My class today was good, if a bit sad. It was his last class, but we finished the lesson completely and did the homework in class, so there aren't any loose ends. I hope his family will help him study somewhere in the future.

I did a lot of paperwork, then read the Sunday paper for a bit after I finished. I called F and while I was waiting for him, started on the Sunday puzzle. I was almost done when he arrived. I hope I can finish it tomorrow.

We came home and I started on dinner right away. Tonight I was making tacos. We had some very spicy meat, with some cheese, sour cream, tomato and lettuce. It was nice. We ran out of taco shells so we defrosted the tortillas we had in the freezer. After we heated them, they were yummy. I think I like them better than the taco shells.

F did the dishes and then watched a bit of telly, but at 11 we watched So You Think You Can Dance. It's interesting, sometimes I think a person isn't good, but the judges do, and vice versa. During the show, we finished up our remaining mincemeat tarts. So yummy. I was thinking about buying more mincemeat and making some, but then I realized that they are a winter food and we'll be heading into spring soon.

Anyway, that was my day. It was surprisingly good. I enjoyed it! Night.

Slightly Convenient

For those days when you're not sure if you'd rather leave your clothes lying on the floor or pick them up and hang them in the closet??
Found on a group of clothes hangers from the 100 yen shop.

February 22, 2010

Monday Clear and sunny, then rain and thunderstorms at night.

Today was a nice day. I overslept because I was up too late again. However, I didn't have any plans anyway so it wasn't as if it was a terrible thing! When I got up, I showered, watched a bit of TV and then decided to go out.

I was able to ride my bike and that was a nice treat. I rode off to the Co-op mall. I had lunch at McDonalds and then did a little shopping. I went to Athena, the decorating shop next to the mall and discovered that their Asian store is being cleared out. I picked up a scarf for a friend for what I thought was 495 yen, and a set of placemats for the table for 50 yen. When I paid, it turned out the scarf was even cheaper! I should have bought more. I could have gotten one for myself too.

I rode home and was home around 4:30. It was really nice to be able to get out under my own power for a change too. The weather and my foot haven't been very nice to me for a long time.

I watched a bunch of the weekend's TV today, including CSI: Miami. Now, I like the characters, but the plot lines are getting so convoluted I can't help wondering how dumb the writers think the audience is. Enough already! Get back to detecting and solving crimes. No more Russian mafia please.

In the evening F came home. He contacted my dentist to get an intro letter to the hospital's Dental Surgeon and hopefully we'll be able to get in to see him soon. We spent a bit of time together and then went out for dinner.

We had a nice dinner at New York, New York and then hit the grocery store for tomorrow's dinner. We're going to have tacos, the not very authentic type, but we like them!

Came home again and I watched my two medical shows and the British comedy Not Going Out. It's okay. Sometimes there are big laughs, other times not so much. Today there were a few.

So, that's about it! My day was quite good, and I enjoyed it. Tomorrow I have one class and it's the student's final one. I'll be a bit sad afterwards I think. Night.

February 21, 2010

Sunday - Clear but cold.

I stayed up very very late last night, and so I slept in quite late today too. It was almost one when I finally got up. F had the TV on, but not very loudly, so it didn't wake me up. Sweet of him.

We watched a bit of the bobsledding at the Olympics and it was scary. So many teams were having accidents that I didn't want to watch for much longer. So, we went out for lunch.

We had lunch at Jiro and it was nice. F had what I usually have, and I had pork with small shrimp. It was nice. However, something I ate started to irritate my tooth, so we went home after lunch so I could floss. (Note to self, put floss in handbag!) After that, we went to a hundred yen shop. I didn't find exactly what I wanted, but I found things that were okay, so that was good.

Next up, was my request. I wanted a hazelnut ice cream. Our local tourist trap sells them. Everytime I've gone there it has been just after a meal and I've been too full, but today, I just thought it was time. We went in, looked around a bit and then got our ice creams. Yum. They were so good.

F wanted to drive to the beach, so that's what we did. The beach was a mess. There was garbage everywhere, but we walked along the ocean for a couple of minutes. I was cold, surprisingly. I think it was the wind more than anything else.

After the beach trip, he drove us to Sakata. We toured the dock area, and then went to the big department store in the middle of Sakata. We hacked around there for a while and finally found a sink mat in the kitchen shop. I've wanted to get a new one for a while as ours is past it, so we got it. It also helped us avoid paying for parking, so a good deal!

F Suggested going to Udoku for dinner. It's a very fancy Japanese restaurant that we go occasionally and enjoy. I didn't know if it would be too busy, but it wasn't. We had a lovely meal of fish and steak and tempura, sashimi and a wide array of things. Presentation is all in this restaurant and our first course came out in a box that looked like a sake presentation box. We lifted it off to reveal appetizers, then lifted those down to reveal another group of appetizers for us. It was amazing to look at. We had a lovely dinner and by the end we were both really full. I told F I didn't want to think about food for two days after this!

We came home and had an okay evening at home. I watched 8 Mile, which was better than I thought it would be, but really, I'm from the wrong age and culture to get the movie.

F had some bee in his bonnet about the Olympics and got all angry about me not letting him watch them. In my opinion, that's all he's done for the last couple of days. Yes, I've watched a few non-Olympic things, but he's now watched men's skating at least twice. Enough already.

Anyway, he finally went to bed and I'm going to go soon too. I'm tired and I need to get more sleep. Tomorrow not sure what I'll do with myself. I might go shopping if the weather holds, or I might stay home and do laundry. Wish me luck! Night.

My pictures from the beach.

February 20, 2010

Saturday- Cold and snowy, then finally clearing.

A good day. I got up early. Okay, not early, but definitely on time, showered and then F and I went out for breakfast. After that, we went to my school, where F proceeded to shovel snow for me. I didn't want him to, but I think he enjoyed it!

I was scheduled for 3 classes today and they were good. Well, the first two were. The final student called to say she wasn't feeling well and would take the day off. I'm sad, but I'm happy that she stayed home.

After I finished up, I called F and he came to get me. When he did, I made him come into the school, sit down, and do some figuring out. Apparently, the taxes that we thought were so simple, weren't. He'd made some dumb mistake that the people in his office caught, so we'll have to go back to the tax office and fix it. Ack.

We drove out to the mall and had dinner at a Korean bibinba place in the food court. It was rice but I enjoyed it anyway. Then we went to see It's Complicated, the movie with Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep. It was funny. There were a few parts where I could hardly breathe I was laughing so hard! And, of course, I was laughing (and I don't have a cute little titter like the Japanese women have) out loud in places, and F was trying to shush me. I think he was embarrassed, but eh by gum, if something is funny, I'm going to laugh! Overall, I enjoyed the movie, but it wasn't great cinema. A funny(for me) thing happened after the film, I was talking about Alec Baldwin and F came out with the fact that he looked like the guy from Celebrity Apprentice. I was rather impressed with that, because of course, he meant Stephen Baldwin, who is his brother. Wow! Good going F. I think Alec even showed up once didn't he?

After the movie, we drove back to Tsuruoka and went to the grocery store. F was hungry again. I wasn't too interested, but he was. We came home and then I watched my two episodes of Harper's Island. I enjoyed it, but it was a bit scary. It's a lot of fun though.

And that basically was my day. Work and then fun. Tomorrow? I have no idea, but if I don't get some sleep, I'll never find out! Night.

February 19, 2010

Friday - Rainy and then snowy. Very snowy.

I got up this morning at a goodly time. Really, no sleeping in. Hurray. Then, I drank some coffee and did some work on my computer. Honestly, I did some school stuff.

I had a quiet day at home. I had wanted to go out, but the weather wasn't good. In a way, it was good that I stayed home, as I got two deliveries I had been waiting for. First off, I got my birthday present from my sister. It was great! I got a t-shirt, some socks, some Kraft Mac & Cheese, a calendar, and some toothpaste. Awesome!

Later on I received my book order from my book supplier. Yes! I've been wondering when it would arrive. So glad that it came. I was hoping it would come on Tuesday, but that would have been a little optimistic, since I ordered the books on Wednesday. Less than a week? Pushing it.

I watched a lot of the Men's Figure Skating competition. It was great. I thought that the Japanese skater, Daisuske Takahashi was very good, but in all honesty, I liked Nobunari Oda better! It's just too bad that his shoelace broke.

When F came home, he had a little break while he changed. After that, we went out. First we went to the electronic store for ink for our fax machine, then to my school to drop off my books and set up the heater for tomorrow.

Then, we went to have something to eat. Our favourite okonomiyaki shop has just moved, so we went there for dinner. It was nice. Cheap and cheerful. I like that. We had gyoza and they were freshly made in the restaurant, not frozen, then 2 okonomiyaki types. We had curry cheese and kimchee. Both were good. The owner gave us coffee for free afterwards.

We got a few things at the grocery store and then came home. After a while of F watching the Olympics I asked him if he'd like some dessert, so I finally served him some mincemeat tarts and ice cream. He made coffee so we had a nice little snack. I have been dreaming about the tarts since Christmas, but on Christmas day we had too much to eat and then on New Years Eve I wasn't feeling very well. Then, F wasn't feeling very well for a while and I didn't think it was fair to give him something so unusual! Anyway, they were great. And we still have some left. Yay.

Around midnight I started watching Harper's Island. Is anyone else watching it? I am quite into it, but I'm also rather freaked out by it. There's 2 episodes tomorrow night, and about 3 next weekend.

So, basically, today was a good day, except for the snow. I'm hoping that we won't get too much more overnight or tomorrow. I'll have to do a bit of shovelling between my classes I think. Wish me luck.

That was my day. I enjoyed having a lazy day off. Night!

February 18, 2010

Thursday - Sunny, then rain & snow. Clear at night.

I went to bed late again last night and so overslept this morning. I wasn't too concerned about it, and dragged myself out of bed finally. I watched a bit of TV and then showered.

In the afternoon I sent more email and spent some time on my computer. Oh, and I vacuumed the apartment too. Yay. Looks much improved.

As there was nothing on TV again during the day, I watched some of Brisco County Jr, and enjoyed it. I love Bruce Campbell. He's so funny.

I made my lunch, ate and then headed off to the school. I thought it had stopped raining when I went outside, but, surprise, it hadn't. I put on my raincape and headed off. I got to the school in good time and did a check of things. Then, I read newspapers. I hadn't finished Wednesday's yet, so I read it and then read some of Thursday's. Oh, and I did the puzzle from Sunday's paper. I had started it on Tuesday, but was on the wrong track. I got my head straightened out today, and managed to finish the puzzle. Yay.

My class was fine tonight. We talked about the power of Twitter as my student has recently become a user of it, and the Olympic Games too. Then, we went back to the lesson and talked about families. Interesting.

After class, I did a quick clean up, a check of the first Saturday lesson and then I finished today's paper. I sent F a text message and then 5 minutes later another one. I waited. If he didn't answer quickly, it usually meant he was still working. Close to 9:30 I got a call from him. He'd just found my message. He was at home doing laundry. It's very annoying. I was patiently waiting in my school for him to finish what I thought was his work, but he was already done.

We had dinner in Moku-moku and it was okay. I had salmon and broccoli cream soup pasta and it was okay. It wasn't great, certainly not as great as my pasta last week. There definitely wasn't enough broccoli in it.

We came home and F watched more Olympics. I'm quite bored by the whole Olympics thing in a way. I enjoy some of the sports, but I don't know who people are and I don't care too much either! Still, some sports are fun to watch.

That's about it for today. I'm tired and I'd like to get to bed a soupçon earlier than I did last night! Night

February 17, 2010

Wednesday - Partly cloudy, cool, no rain or snow. Yes!

An okay day. I went to bed rather late last night and then decided this morning that I deserved an extra 30 minutes in bed. So, I slept in on purpose. It was nice. After that, I got up and got on with my day.

I watched last night's Project Runway. These designers don't seem to have a lot of personality yet. I'm sure we'll find out what it is later, but right now they are on best behaviour. I also watched Criminal Minds where Spencer's father makes an appearance, and then an episode of CSI - the orange one! I also fitted in some Ugly Betty. Whew!

In the afternoon I wrote some email to a few friends that I had been neglecting, and then I had to start getting ready for work. I had a nice lunch of omelette and then some avocado on crispbreads. Nice.

I cycled to work, stopping at the drugstore on the way. I wanted to get a couple of soup packets to keep in the cupboard for days when I can't eat much.

At the school I got ready and even did some vacuuming today. I really had let it be too long since I did it before. Still, it was done and I was glad.

My class went well and the student did better than I expected. He had review today and he seemed to remember most of what we did. After class I cleaned up, prepped a few more lessons for him and did some paperwork. Yay for me.

I called F and he picked me up. We went to the drugstore for a few essentials, then to the grocery store for a few more. Home was next.

At home I started cooking dinner right away. Tonight we had fried chicken drumsticks, gnocchi and salad. It was all quite nice. I enjoyed it and I think F did too. He did the dishes, but watched Olympics for a while first.

I watched more Ugly Betty tonight, then I tuned in for a bit of Weeds. I think the show is interesting, but I'm still trying to place the characters. F said that at the end of the show they had a disclaimer saying that it wasn't a true story and that they don't recommend selling drugs as a way to make a living, or something like that. Oh Japan....how condescending of you, but I can't say I'm that surprised. I am surprised that they didn't blank out a certain sex toy that was in the episode. I suppose sex toys aren't as bad as smoking grass?

Anyway, that's about it for me. I spent the rest of the evening watching my computer screen, not much else happened. I'll talk to you tomorrow I think. Bye!

February 16, 2010

Tuesday - Sunny and cold, then snowy at night.

Today was a bit of a busy day. I got up to see the news, but of course there wasn't any because of the Olympics. I have to say I was disappointed. Still, I did my usual morning things.

While I was on my computer this morning, I watched a movie called Hamlet 2. It was rather fun, silly, and out there, but fun. I also watched CSI: New York while I ate my lunch.

I headed off to the school just before 2 pm. It had just started to snow a little but it wasn't staying on the ground. I rode my bike again today. I was glad to be able to do that as I was running late. When I got to my school, I tried to get my new water pot to work, but I couldn't figure it out. Ack. I used my old coffee maker because it was fast and easy.

Class went well and we had a good time. After the student left, I set up the coffee pot again and this time managed to get it to work. Yay. However, when I took some of the water out, it smelt really nasty. Yuck. I emptied it out and tried again. The first water out smelt a bit odd, but then it was fine. I am guessing it was the outlet system needing to be used a bit first.

My other two lessons went well today, except the mother of a student told me he wouldn't be continuing as he's going into Junior High soon. I tried to point out that I do teach Junior High students and the English in the school isn't the same as what I teach, but it sounds like she'd already decided. Sigh. Too bad. I really like that student.

After classes I finished up, cleaned up and did dishes. Then I called F and he came to get me. For dinner we went to Fireball, a little Italian restaurant that we go to sometimes. We both had pasta, I had fish and vegetables in basil sauce, and F had fish and mushrooms in Japanese style sauce. He was supposed to have pork and cabbage in a spicy sauce, but changed his mind at the very last minute. Grr. I wouldn't have had two fish sauces personally, but they were good.

We bought groceries on the way home (except they'd already put their eggs away) and then settled in to watch So You Think You Can Dance. It was okay. I still have no idea what will happen when the auditions are over. I think I'd have preferred to see American Idol again.

And that was about it for me. Tomorrow I have an evening class, but I should be busy on my computer for a while. Wish me luck with that! I'll talk to you later eh. Night.

February 15, 2010

Monday - Rainy and a bit warmer, then cold at night.

Today was a busy day. I got up a bit after 9, took a shower and had some coffee with F. Then we went out. We decided to have a cheap and cheerful breakfast at Tsukyia, the gyudon shop. It wasn't bad. Then, we headed into the mall to see about my taxes. (Cue ominous music)

At the mall, there wasn't a big line this year, so we only had to wait a few minutes. When we got to the front, F asked the man a few questions, then we were directed to the other side of the lobby. The man stamped a couple of my forms, took some, and that was that! I didn't even have to pay anything this year. I had more deductions than last year, so I'm happy. Yay.

The next thing we tried to do was go to the travel agency by the train station. I took my notebook with me as it had possible train times on it that I wanted to take to Niigata. The thing was, originally I had planned to go down on Sunday morning, so I had written a train at 7:04 or something. However, I realized that I was not happy about going to Niigata that early and wanted to go the night before. Because my credit card isn't based in Japan I didn't want to use it to reserve a room, but I'd have to prepay the room as I won't be arriving in Niigata until quite late. Get all that? So, we booked a hotel. Then, we checked the day that the man had booked it for. The wrong night. Sigh. I already have a hotel for Sunday night. I needed a hotel for Saturday night. Okay, fixed that. Then, discovered that my husband had blithely put the Sunday leaving time on the ticket to Niigata, forgetting that I was now going to leave on Saturday, after a day of work. ACK. Can you feel my frustration? If he'd just listened to me before he wrote anything, or even better, ASKED me I would have told him. Anyway, we got it all sorted out. Why didn't I just do it by myself? I don't know really.

We came home for a bit and vegged, then headed out again to the dentist. During breakfast this morning my tooth had started hurting again, and I was a bit worried about what the dentist would say. Sure enough, he wanted me to get my wisdom tooth out, he thinks that will help it. I finally decided okay, I'll do it. Then, he tells me and hubby that as it's a difficult tooth he thinks I should see a dental surgeon in the hospital about it. Great. Just what I needed. We'll have to get a letter from the dentist to take there, and of course, F will have to take time off work to go with me. (And maybe me too.)

After my treatment and stuff, F suggested having dinner. I countered with getting a sandwich and coffee. He wanted noodles again, but I said no way. We compromised by going to a grocery store and I got a gorgeous sandwich, he bought stuff to make himself udon. We came home and ate, watched Olympics for a while (Canada finally got a gold medal! WOOT!) and then went out for sushi later.

At home again he watched a bunch of weird stuff, but I took over the telly at 11 and watched my weird stuff --Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice.

That's about it for me for tonight. Tomorrow I'm back to work. I have a semi busy day...3 classes and depending on tomorrow's weather I may have to shovel snow or walk. I'm not sure, but I'm really hoping not. Got to go! Night!

February 14, 2010

Sunday Happy Valentine's Day! Clear and cool.

Today was quite a day. I got up late because of course it is Sunday, so why the heck not? After I got up, I made brunch. We had French toast and sausages, and it was good.

In the afternoon F watched Olympics until I for one was sick to death of them, then he switched to watching something about a woman with some kind of handicap. When they showed her giving birth I got a bit snarky and requested that he change the channel.

We basically sat at home, him on the couch, me at my computer all day. I had thought we would go out, but we didn't. Finally, around 6:30 I got royally annoyed because we wasted a whole day, so I stormed out. I didn't really storm...I was so tired of being cooped up that I had to get out of the apartment. I only walked to the corner and bought a couple of canned coffees, but I really needed to get outside. I brought the cans back, and after a few minutes of bickering, we decided to go out. Yay.

First we went to the electric shop to buy a new light bulb for the spare room, then, while we were there, F bought me a hot water dispenser for my school. It's what they call a hot pot I think. I hope it'll be a little safer than the coffee maker I have now.

After that, we went for dinner. We talked about where to go and decided to try one of the hotels we sometimes go to. We went to the Daiichi Hotel first but instead of going to our usual place, F wanted to see if the Teppanyaki room was a possibility. We went there and they said at first it wasn't, but then they said we could go in. We had very nice steak and garlic rice. The rice was also flavoured with shiso, which made it taste quite unusual, but in a good way.

When we finished dinner we went to the grocery store and finally bought our milk! We also picked up some drinks for tonight. F found chocolate soda and got that. We tried it and it was interesting. I don't think I'd want to drink it everyday, but once in a while would be fine.

Well, tomorrow I have quite a day. We're going to the tax office in the morning, hopefully to the train station to buy train tickets, and then, to the dentist in the afternoon. Ack. Too busy.

Gotta go. Night!

February 13, 2010

Saturday - Snowy but warm.

An okay day. I got up, watched the news and then took a shower. F was at home this morning and didn't go to the doctor. We watched the first couple of minutes of the Olympic opening ceremonies and then left for brunch.

Today we had brunch in Marumatsu. It was, to be nice about it, okay. It wasn't great. Still, it was fast and cheap, so overall, fine. After brunch, I popped into the grocery store to buy a sandwich for later, and then went to the school.

I did a bit of snow shovelling, but not too much as it really wasn't necessary. After that, I went into my school and got to work for real.

Classes went well today, and my day passed quickly. I did up my paperwork and then called F to come and get me.

We had dinner at Edoitchi and then picked up a few groceries. We didn't pick up milk though...it was the one thing that we really needed to get! Typical.

We came home and watched a bit of the Olympic Opening Ceremonies then stopped the playback to watch Harper's Island. I'm into that show, but it creeps me out too!

When tonight's episodes finished we went back to the Olympics. I am so annoyed. The blooming Japanese announcers talked all through EVERYTHING. I swear sometimes they should just ST*U. Some things just don't need explaining. GAH. kd lang was great, and how wonderful to see Anne Murray, Donald Sutherland and Terry Fox's mother Betty carry the flag in. I'm still watching and waiting to see how they'll bring the flame in. Sadly too many Internet sites have blabbed about who it was, so I know, but...I was looking forward to the suspense.

Anyway, tomorrow is Valentine's day. I'm planning to make brunch at home, but apart from that I have no ideas. I gave hubby his card a little after midnight, but haven't been out to get him anything else, so don't know if I will be able to or not. He was quite pleased with me for the card!

I have to go. It's late and I'm a bit tired. The ceremonies are winding down on the telly, but they were great...exept for the fact I had to watch them on Japanese TV. Got to go...night!

February 12, 2010

Friday - Cooler, with a bit of snow.

I got up early this morning, and turned on the heater. I went back to bed for a snooze and then woke up a little later to a strange beeping. The heater had run out of kerosene just before the news came on. What to do? I put on a sweater and watched the news, then filled up the kerosene. The room was warm already so it wasn't too bad.

I had a good if quiet day at home. I read Thursday's paper, made a cheese and broccoli omelette for lunch that was amazing, and worked on the big "cull" for my woman's group thing. It was a lot of work, but went smoothly I think.

F came home early today as he'd had some union thing that he had to attend on his own time, so had taken time off. It ended early so he came home and slept on the couch. After a while he toddled off to bed and slept there!

Around 8 pm I went into the bedroom and woke him up. I suggested dinner, so off we went . We went to Cocos and both had the chicken with garlic soy sauce and mud pie for dessert. That was nice. Our main dish had been cleared and we were talking when F got a funny expression on his face and started looking for his wallet. He couldn't find it. He ran out to the car but it wasn't there either. Sigh. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but I didn't have much money either. I didn't have enough to cover the bill. I remembered my school money, so I loaned F enough to pay for bill with strict instructions that as soon as we got home he was to repay me. (He did.)

On the way home, we stopped off at my school to set the heater for the morning and check how much snow was in the parking space. By the time I'd finished in the apartment, F had all but finished shovelling the snow from the space. How nice! He didn't have to do that.

We came home as we didn't have enough money to buy groceries! We watched the end of a movie that was a bit odd, then two episodes of Harper's Island. It's a bit freaky...sort of like watching a horror movie filmed around a wedding setting. I like it, but it scares me a lot!

And that has pretty much been my day. I did pop out in the early afternoon to clear our parking space at our apartment. It wasn't difficult work and the weather wasn't bad either so I was happy.

Tomorrow I have work that will keep me at the school for most of the day, and then I'm not sure what I'll do in the evening. Catch me later and find out. Night!

February 11, 2010

Thursday - Bit of snow in the morning, which turned into more snow later on. Gah.

Today was a good day. I got up 5 minutes after the news started, but did manage to see most of it. After that, F and I vegged for a bit. I found Fame (the original movie) on WOWOW so we watched that. It holds up quite well really.

We went for lunch to the Washington Hotel. They didn't have a lot for me, so I just had pasta, but F had their daily special. It's very cheap to have lunch there and it's usually okay, so it made a nice treat. We enjoyed it. Afterwards though I wasn't so happy leaving as the parkade has one of those corkscrew exits. I always get a bit, not queasy exactly, just freaked out by it. It doesn't help that F tends to go really fast and then slam on the brakes in places either.

When we finished lunch, F got some gas for the car, and some money. We hit up a grocery store for some snacks and then went to karaoke. We didn't get free time today, we went for two hours. It was a lot of fun. I found out that there'll be an Adam Lambert song there after the 14th. We were too early! Still, I managed to find a lot of songs to sing! I tried to do a Lady Gaga song, but it was too hard and I stopped it.

We came home after karaoke and F worked on my taxes again. I felt sorry for him, but it was his idea. While he was working, he subjected me to some of the worst J crap on TV that I've seen in a while. Sigh.

We had a late dinner at Grado. It was nice though. I had chicken and pork, F had pasta, the ikura-salmon-shrimp one that I like. If I hadn't had pasta for lunch I probably would have had it too. It had snowed quite a bit when we first left our apartment, and after our meal F had to clean off the car again.

It was a quiet evening in our apartment after that. We watched ER at 11. It was a good one with some characters being held hostage in an ER room.

After that, F went to bed and I played the internet! It is terribly late right now, but I don't have to work tomorrow so I'm goofing off. I shouldn't , but then again, why shouldn't I?

Night!
