April 30, 2010

Friday - Cloudy and a bit rainy.

A good day. I got up this morning, watched news and then had a nap. Sigh. I slept through my second alarm too...bad me.

I had a quiet morning and afternoon around the house. Got a bit of a headache again. Wondered if it was connected to the sushi last night or the no coffee today. No idea really. I should probably do a diet check some day.

After a bit I decided that I really must get out to the bank. I went out to the bank machine, then grabbed a quick bite at McDonalds. Then, I went back to the grocery store and got a few ingredients for dinner. I decided not to do the chicken stroganoff that I've been planning to do, but to do something fairly simple. I bought some cheese, cream, bacon, asparagus, mushrooms and then came home. It had started raining when I came out of the store, so biking wasn't that fun, but it wasn't too bad. I made it home safely.

At home I sent F a message that I'd like him to call or text me before he left work and then got started on my quiche. I chopped up the asparagus, mushrooms, then grated some of the cheese. I basically did everything except put the wet ingredients into the veggies.

F called me around 6:30 to say he was done and to check what the problem was! He thought something was wrong. I told him I was making dinner and just wanted to know when to start cooking it! After we hung up, I started the oven.

I put the quiche it and started it going, got the table cleared off and set, and waited for F. While I was doing all the quiche stuff, I watched rather a lot of Corner Gas. I needed my dose of Canadiana! So funny.

When F came home, he changed (finally) and he made something for our dinner too. He made chap chae, a Korean noodle dish. I didn't mind as it's one of my favourites, and the noodles aren't flour based. So, tonight we had quiche, salad and Korean noodles. Quite an international meal really! It was good though. I was quite happy with the quiche too. I had used some real cheddar so it had a little more taste than usual.

F did the dishes and then we had a little rest. We went out to buy gas for the car and to check my school. With me not being there much this week I wanted to clear any flyers from the door and just generally make sure things were okay. They were fine. We decided to go out for dessert to Mr. Donut. Actually, lots of places were bandied about, but Mr. Donut is cheap and cheerful.

We came home and had a quiet evening. We watched Top Gear again and it was funny. F is amazed that I like the show, considering it's all about cars and I'm not very interested in cars. Michael Gambon was on and I tried to convince F that he was really Dumbledore, but he wasn't too sure. Of course, he wasn't wearing long robes and a beard.

That's about it for me. I'll be away for 2 or 3 nights, so there won't be any updates. I may do some as I'm planning to take my computer along, but they won't get posted for a bit. Talk to you soon. Those of you in Japan, have a great Golden Week. Bye!

April 2010 Movies

I saw three films at the theatre in April. A brief review follows. Did you see these? And if so, what did you think?

10) Clash of the Titans - Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, Liam Neeson (April 24, 2010)
I only was able to see the original Clash of the Titans on TV. It was hokey but fun. It didn't take itself too seriously. This remake is also a lot of fun, but I think it takes itself a little too seriously. No matter. It's a popcorn film, if you are drawn to the actors or the story it is worth seeing, if not, it isn't. I had a lot of fun in the final 15 minutes of the film trying to name the films that I'd seen the scenes in before. Avatar (well, put Sam Worthington on a flying horse and what do you expect?), Narnia, etc. It wasn't until my husband whispered, "Quidditch" to me that I laughed out loud. It cracked me up that he was doing the same thing I was! And, he was right.

It's fun, fast and doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but worth seeing if this is the kind of film you enjoy. If not, keep away!

9) Shutter Island - Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams (April 10, 2010)
A very stylish film from Martin Martin Scorsese, tells the tale of two US marshalls looking into the case of a missing inmate in a mental institution/prison. DiCaprio plays a WWII vet who helped liberate Dachau. He is haunted by the memories of the Concentration Camp and by the ghost of his wife.

A few hours after seeing this film I am still thinking about it and what everything meant. I enjoyed it and it certainly wasn't as violent or scary as I thought it would be. That's a good thing! Fans will probably like it. Worth checking out at the theater.

8) The Hurt Locker - Jeremy Renner, Ralph Fiennes, Anthony Mackie (April 5, 2010)
The Academy Award winner for best picture and director this year tells the story of a bomb disposal unit in Iraq. It follows them as they try to defuse bombs and survive in a war zone.

I thought this was a good movie, but in all honesty I am not sure that it really was the best picture of last year. It was exciting and yet boring too, rather like war itself, I imagine. Worth watching however.

April 2010 Books

These are the novels that I read this month. The number at the beginning refers to the number so far this year. Some old favourites this month.

10) Hot Money - Dick Francis (April 29, 2010)*
Malcolm Pembroke had 5 marriages and 9 children. His latest wife was recently murdered and someone made an attempt on his life. It was up to one of his children to find the murderer and protect his father. Ian takes on the difficult job and gets to know his father in a new way. A cracking great read!

9) "K" is for Killer - Sue Grafton (April 27, 2010)*
Kinsey Millhone is hired to discover the murderer of a beautiful young woman with a shady life. She searches for information and and looks at the seedy side of life. Vintage Grafton. Good stuff.

8) The Guy Not Taken - Jennifer Weiner (April 9, 2010)*
A book of short stories from a good writer. I think I read them before, but a re-read was fine. Some stories are better than others.

7) Certain Girls - Jennifer Weiner (April 5, 2010)
This novel is a sequel to Weiner's first novel, Good in Bed. It takes up when Joy is 13 years old and preparing for her bat mitzvah. Weiner uses two voices in this novel, Cannie, the mother and lead character from her earlier novel, and Joy, her hearing impaired daughter. They switch telling their stories every chapter. It makes it a very interesting way to follow the story as events that are low in importance to one character take on great meaning to the other.

Jennifer Weiner is generally considered a writer of "Chick Lit" but she is such a good writer, that it is unfair to label her as such. This is a very good book and the suspense builds and the novel is difficult to put down. I stayed up an hour later than I wanted to so I could finish the novel, and it was worth it!

6) The Elusive Mrs. Pollifax - Dorothy Gilman (April 4, 2010)
The wonderful Mrs. Pollifax takes on Bulgaria in her quest to aid the Underground, rescue a imprisoned American and deliver a package. Armed with her ability to read people, her sympathy and an uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time, this unusual spy tale is a lot of fun. Very enjoyable, a fast read.

Thursday - Cloudy, rainy, then clearing to nice and sunny.

Today was a nice day. It started last night when I turned off my computer a little early, grabbed my book and finished it. I didn't get to bed until 4 am, but it was totally worth it to read Hot Money again. I love Dick Francis. So sad that he's gone now.

I got up at a semi reasonable time today and hubs was already in the kitchen of course. He had made himself some noodles so he wasn't starving! After my shower we decided to go out.

We went to a restaurant for lunch. F had steak and I had dadacha-mame gratin with a salad. It was very nice. I was expecting pasta, but it didn't have any, just the dadacha-mame with sauce and a couple of scallops. Yum.

We went to the Kokusai Mura today too. I wanted to put up a poster on their bulletin board. The English speaking lady that I know wasn't there today. We left the poster with some other ladies. I thought they said they would put it up, F told me later that they didn't say that. It ticks me off because I wouldn't have left the poster with them if I'd known that. He never tells me things. GAH.

RANT**(feel free to skip this paragraph)--Why is it that he will translate every single detail of every single menu that we order from, when he knows I can read them fairly well, BUT refuses to tell me what's going on when it's important to me??? When I ask him to stop translating menus for me he gets angry at me (?Why?). I've told him innumerous times that I will ask him for help with kanji or things I don't understand, but nope, has to translate menus for me. And he always starts with fish, which is almost NEVER my first choice. Or shellfish? I really dislike most shellfish and don't eat it since a horrible food poisoning incident 15 or more years ago. ARGH! **END RANT (maybe!)

Anyway, after that, we went to the new drugstore that has finally opened in that part of town. It was big. And new. And pretty much like all the other drugstores in Tsuruoka! When we were done there, we hit up Yamaya for some decaf coffee, tortillas, and a few other things. F was happy because he got a free fake beer. The lady offered me one too, but I turned it down without thinking of him. Oops. Sorry, I could have gotten one for you dear.

We came home for a bit after that. After a while F went to his house to change the tires on the car. When he came back we watched last night's Desperate Housewives which was fun and a little scary! Edie's husband is odd.

For dinner I suggested going to Kintaro sushi and that's where we went. It wasn't too crowded for a national holiday, which was a little surprising. We had a nice meal and then came home afterwards.

We watched ER and then F went to bed. I'm up late as usual. Sigh. I really should stop that, but it's quite hard at times. I'm not sure why I fight going to bed so much.

Anyway, tomorrow I'm off work again, while F has to go. He'll be off for a bit then with the holiday. I'm hoping things will go well.

Gotta go....night!

April 28, 2010

Wednesday - Cloudy but warmish.

An okay day. I got up at an almost reasonable time, watched last night's telly and then a bit of today's stuff. Today they had the two Craig Bonds on and they were really entertaining, even though I'd already seen them before.

I had planned to go out today, and I could have done so, but somehow I just never got around to it. When it came to the time where I had to decide go out or stay, I decided to stay in and work on my Journal column, so I didn't waste my time. I got it almost done. Basically it is written, I just need to put a little bit of polish on it, buff up some of the sentences, that kind of thing.

F came home when I was in the midst of finishing and I basically had to quit because he made so much noise it was horribly distracting. I was doing things like deleting the entire column....luckily I had been saving as I had been working.

We had a nice dinner tonight at Jiro. I had my usual and F had his almost usual. We came home and watched an AFI tribute to films on NHK. It was followed by a Actor's Studio Interview with Matt Damon. He is very impressive, very well-spoken. At 11 we switched over to So You Think You Can Dance and it was good, if a little sad tonight. Two of the dancers left tonight.

And that's about it. It was a quiet day. I've been trying to read part of my book again, but I have so many other things to waste my time on that I never do get to it.

Tomorrow is a national holiday and F is off work. I hope we can have a good time together. I have a few things that I'd like to do, but nothing that is too important. Catch you tomorrow night? Bye for now.

April 27, 2010

Tuesday - Cloudy and windy, a little rain at night.

A good day. I got up when I was supposed to this morning but the news wasn't on. I had a nice long nap on the couch instead. Sigh. Maybe I should go to bed earlier?

In the afternoon I watched the James Bond movie de jour and had fun doing that. I didn't do a lot until it was time to go to work. I made myself some scrambled eggs and then set off to work.

Originally I had planned to stop on the way, but I decided that the weather might change on me if I did go to the store, so kept on going. I'm rather glad I did as I did a bit of cleaning in my school, plus read the paper and some of my book. I'm presently reading Hot Money, which I got as a Bookmooch this week. I was lucky and someone in Japan had it as a giveaway. It's probably my favourite Dick Francis novel...about a man who married 5 times and one (or more) of his ex-wives or children is trying to kill him. Good stuff.

My student and I had a good class and then she left. When I was finishing up I had some tea and then called F to come and get me. I unplugged a few things at the school and turned off the water. It's a long vacation and if there was an earthquake or something I want to be able to say I took precautions.

F and I had a decent meal in Cocos tonight. I thought he was going to cook, but he didn't. He got home late and was tired. We each tried a new dish. Tonight I had the pork cutlet which was okay, but not as good as F's chicken. I also tried the "Canadian Poutine" but it wasn't any kind of poutine that I've ever had! There was no gravy on it. How can you call it poutine if it doesn't have gravy on it? This was fried potato wedges with melted cheese on it.

We came home and had a snuggle* before So You Think You Can Dance. Tonight's show was really good and we were both impressed by the dancers. When it was over, F took his bath and I watched most of Project Runway. I look forward to watching it all tomorrow. Yay!

And that was my day. I'm hoping to put in a few minutes of reading time before I go to bed. I really love this novel and I don't mind staying up a bit for it. Got to go. Night!

*Usual disclaimers apply.

April 26, 2010

Monday - Sunny and warm-ish.

An okay day. I had a late night again so I slept in a bit this morning.

I really was a lady of leisure today and I didn't do very much unfortunately. I watched some of my TV from the weekend and enjoyed it for the most part.

F came home and we went out for dinner. We tried going to a place that was closed, then went for okonomiyaki instead. It was nice. We bought a few groceries then came home and had a quiet evening in.

That's about it. It really wasn't an exciting or productive day at all. In fact, I kind of forgot about all the stuff that I really should be doing! Oops.

Tomorrow I'm back to work, with my last class of the day/month. I hope I don't go stir crazy with myself over the holiday. Wish me luck eh!

April 25, 2010

Sunday - Gorgeous but windy, thunderstorm and rain at night.

A busy and fun day...but it's so late I may not be able to say anything! Went to bed around 5 am, got up at 1 ish when F woke me up!

We had brunch at Grado, it was very nice. After, we went to the park by bicycle (which was scary as F's bike broke down in the middle!) and had a good saunter around. It was a lovely day and the blossoms looked lovely as usual. There were lots of people in the park too.

We came home for a bit, F took his bike in to get fixed and I did the apartment entry cleaning.

We went to Doutors for a sandwich because I saw a review of the store on a friend's page and it made me hungry!

After that, we went to karaoke for 2 hours. I sang a lot. They didn't have the Adam Lambert song that I really wanted to do (For Your Entertainment), but they did have Time for Miracles, so I did that one. I did a bunch of others, including the one in this picture. It means that I was the best singer! Ha! I don't really think so, but would this machine lie?

(It's an old song by Right Said Fred-it cracks me up every time I sing it.)

We had a fun dinner in Cocos Ichibanya Curry House. I've been trying to get F to go there for ages. They have a multilingual menu so it was nice for me. The curry wasn't bad either. Mine was better than his...I have the knack for good ordering I think!

We came home and watched The Jerk, the old Steve Martin film. I'd never seen it before, despite being a fan of his. We both thought it was really funny.

And that's about it. F has work tomorrow, I'm a lady of leisure. Yay me. I hope I go out and do something though. Enough of this staying home nonsense! If the weather is okay, I'll likely go out. Talk to you tomorrow night? Night!

April 24, 2010

Saturday - Partly cloudy.

An okay day. I didn't sleep well at all last night. I went to bed late and just couldn't fall asleep. It took ages before I drifted off.

This morning I got up, made the bed and showered. I was even out of the shower before F was home. Yay me. He'd gone to the doctor. Just before it was time to go I bundled up my computer and got ready.

We had an okay brunch in Gusto and then F dropped me off at my school. I got busy. I had forgotten to set the heater the night before so I had to get the place warm as soon as possible. I managed. It wasn't that cold in the first place, just a bit chilly.

Although I was scheduled for 3 classes today, only two of them happened. In the time between classes I worked on my column. I am probably a little over halfway done and I'm quite pleased with what I've written so far. I'll likely rewrite a bit of it, but so far so good.

The classes that I had went well. I won't see either student again until after Golden Week. I gave them both a bit of extra homework because I'm mean that way!

After my last class, I phoned F and got him to come and get me. We dropped my computer off at home and then went off to the mall. When we got there, we decided to see Clash of the Titans. We had about 30 minutes before the movie started, so we went to have dinner. I suggested bibinba so that's what we had. It was good, but rather hot in temperature! I had a hard time eating it.

The movie was fun. It was supremely silly and seemed like a derivative of half a dozen other films...chiefly Avatar! Flying horses...Sam Worthington.... check. At one point F leaned into me and said, "Quidditch" and I knew exactly what he meant! I think I might still prefer the hokey original, but this was entertaining.

We came home via the grocery store so F could get his supplies. We came home and watched a few things on telly. We're now watching Top Gear from Britain. It's really interesting, but F has had a couple of beers and is pontificating all over it. Grr.

Anyway, that was my day. It was quite good. Tomorrow I have no idea what we'll do with ourselves...hopefully we'll have some fun!

Night!

April 23, 2010

Friday - Rainy or cloudy most of the day.

I had a very quiet day for the most part. I stayed home during the day. Actually to tell the complete truth, I watched the news and then went back to bed. It was lovely.

In the afternoon I watched a bit of telly, but nothing of note or very good. When F came home he realized that he had forgotten to visit the ATM after work, so he decided to leave right away to do that. Then, almost as an afterthought asked me to go with him. That was the sort of evening we ended up having!

We went to S-Mall to use the ATM and then did a quick run though of the grocery store. F got himself some ramen and other noodle-y type things. Bleck.

We had thought about going to the Daiichi Hotel for dinner since we were there anyway, but F didn't like the sound of their dinners, and they were quite expensive. (He didn't want the cheaper pasta dinner....but had just bought ramen...go figure!) We drove around for a bit and F suggested the Thai place in town, then nixed it. He doesn't really like Thai food. He wanted to go to the "bad" soba shop, I said no. I also said no to the "good" soba shop. Not only am I not into Japanese noodles at the moment, but I don't like being treated like the Gaijin Monkey Guest. Yuck. (That's the one where I sit there and try to eat while the Master of the Shop talks to F about me. So relaxing that.)

We ended up going to a kind of restaurant that does meat, mostly tonkatsu and the like, but some chicken and steak too. F had tonkatsu, I tried to have chicken but they were out. Sigh. At least the steak was good. The coffee afterwards was not. Too strong and too cool. I like my coffee hot, just like my men!!! (groan)

We tried to have a little bit of Hanami after dinner. We parked at City Hall and got out to walk over to the park. We took a right turn and we should have taken the left. We ended up trudging through the stalls in the pitch dark, nowhere near any of the flowers. I was wearing new shoes and so was trying to avoid puddles and keep up to F. For some reason he decided that it would be a good idea if he walked 5 feet in front of me, rather than at my side as I had romantically envisioned. Sigh. Finally, I had enough. I asked him where he thought he was going. "Just to those trees over there." Trees which were really not in sight. At that point I let it be known that I had had enough and would like to turn back now. He knows that I have a bad foot at the moment and that I didn't want to wreck my new shoes, so what on earth was he thinking? We got back to the car and driving home passed the park on the main road. There was a wide dry sidewalk with lots of lanterns and trees...the way we should have gone.

We came home and I told F that I wanted to watch a movie at 10 pm. After it started he decided to do dishes and was lovely and noisy about it. Then he decided to go out and get himself beer. Okay, whatever. He came back (noisily) with beer and snacks for himself. Nowt for me. Sigh. I know I didn't ask him for anything, but would it have killed him to ask me? Probably. Then I had to put up with cellophane bags being opened and smelly contents being chewed (also noisily). Bah!

It sounds like I'm mad at him and I'm not really. I just don't understand how one person can make so much noise without even trying.

Anyway, today was okay. I'm back at work tomorrow and I might have a busy day. I'm thinking I'll take my computer over to the school so I can work on my column. I didn't get anything written today and I have to get it done!

Gotta go. Night!

April 22, 2010

Thursday - Rainy.

I overslept this morning by a few minutes, but the news was set to tape automatically, so it didn't matter much. After I had watched it I had the hardest time staying awake and I very nearly went back to bed. I compromised by taking a 10 minute nap on the couch instead. After that, I was able to get up, make the bed and shower.

I had a quiet afternoon at home. I watched Tomorrow Never Dies which is the Brosnan Bond with Michelle Yeoh. She's tres cool.

My lunch today was scrambled eggs on English Muffins and it was very good. I really enjoyed it. I wonder if I'm getting into a scrambled egg phase rather than a omelette phase!

I went to work in the rain. That wasn't much fun, but I made good time and it wasn't raining enough to get me soaked or worry about dangerous conditions. Although, Japanese drivers do not seem to really understand the rules of the road as I see them!

Class today was good. It was a bit unusual just having one class on a Thursday, but the other two regular ones had cancelled for today. We had a productive time. He learned a few new words and got to speak and read a bit. Good for him.

After class, I did my paperwork, then read the paper and finally got a start on my Journal column. Whew! I wrote about a page by hand. I'll have to self edit of course, but it is started.

I sent F a message that I was done and he called me right back. He was on his way home, so detoured to pick me up. We came home and he began cooking.

Last night we bought groceries for tonight's meal but he was in charge of the meat. He took over making everything else too. He heated the chawanmushi which I probably wouldn't have bothered with! Still, I made coffee and washed and set the table. I also got out the salad. It was a nice meal, but we didn't buy enough meat. I really feel like I should have made him buy more. Hub didn't think it was enough either as he ate noodles later on. I did the dishes while F hung up his laundry.

In the evening we watched last night's Desperate Housewives which was darn funny, and then part of Passengers. F stopped it at 11 to watch the ER repeat. No big deal really.

Oh, while I was watching DH I had a look at some of the pictures that my sister sent me. A cd of them and some dental floss arrived today. Hurray for that. (Yes, I know that Japan has dental floss. However, I haven't been able to find the tape kind. My teeth are very tightly packed and the regular stuff gets shredded, the tape doesn't.)

So, that was my day. Tomorrow I'm off work, but I have that column to write and a few other things to do as well. Wish me luck with them all! Night.

April 21, 2010

Wednesday - Cloudy and a little rainy, clearing at night.

The cherry blossoms outside our apartment are blooming quite nicely, we just haven't had the weather yet to make it worth our while to walk to the park to see the better display there. Sigh. Hopefully tomorrow or Friday it'll be nice enough to go.

Today was a good if quiet day. I got up before my alarms today and stayed up. I watched news and did a little on the computer before taking my shower. The day passed fairly quietly. I did laundry, I watched Passengers, a movie from the weekend and I got ready for work.

I had just finished washing dishes after my brunch when the news came on and my ears pricked up. I heard something about my former place of work. Apparently, my old company went bankrupt. I had to do a net search to be sure, but the place that I used to work for has gone under. I'm not too up on the details as I haven't worked for them in a long time. Sigh. When the other major Eikaiwa went under a year or more ago, I did wonder whether my former place would manage to survive or not.

I had a good ride to work today. I went a slightly different route and it worked rather well. I stopped off at the drugstore for something to drink in my school, then continued to the school. I am really loving the fact that it stays light later at night. Yes!

My class went well tonight. I really enjoy teaching this student, just wish that getting her to speak wasn't so difficult. After she left, I set up for tomorrow's class, read a bit of a magazine and thought about my next Journal column. Did a bit of research on it too.

F picked me up and we went to Midori Shokodo. It's a Japanese restaurant that he likes more than me. I don't mind if if I'm in the right mood, but I'm not often in the right one for it. Tonight I had the kara-age teishoku, or fried chicken dinner set. There was really too much for me. No kidding, I gave some of it to F as he was done his ramen so much faster that I was done.

After dinner we stopped at the grocery store. I think we might just attempt dinner tomorrow night. We bought simple fixings for dinner. Probably will be ginger pork with salad and chawanmushi. I hope so, because I'm getting tired of chosing which restaurant to go to.

We came home and watched So You Think You Can Dance. I enjoyed it, but thought the wrong male dancer was sent home.

F went off to bed after the show and I should really try and get there soon too. I'm not very tired, but I'm trying to get myself into the rhythm of going to bed earlier. This 3 am nonsense isn't good for me.

And that's it for me. Night!

April 20, 2010

Tuesday - Cloudy but nice...a bit of rain later on.

A much better day. I got to bed last night a full hour earlier than usual, so this morning I was able to get myself out of bed and not need to stay in bed. Hurray for that. The news was on too so it was a bonus day.

I watched Medium from the weekend and thought it was good...then watched the first part of today's James Bond film, License to Kill. Every time I see Dalton as Bond I really feel that he was not given enough credit. He followed Roger Moore's wise-quipping Bond and brought more of a serious spy respectability to the whole shebang. I think he was almost as good as Craig. Don't get me wrong, I loved Brosnan as Bond, but that had a lot to do with me loving Brosnan!

I rode off to work today around 2. I taped the end of the movie, hopefully will be able to watch it tomorrow. At the school I got ready and when my student came, taught her. She's going to be busy for a while and won't be able to come at all next month. I'm a little dismayed to hear that, but she did make an appointment for June so I'll see her eventually.

In my between class time today I read 3 newspapers, drank 3 cups of tea, had some soup pasta and started my puzzle from the Sunday paper. I suppose I really should have done some school work, but I'm feeling the drag down to Golden Week start.

My second class went well today. My student had a good weekend and we chatted about that before doing our review of the unit. We still have a few lessons left on that.

After class I did dishes, cleaned, did paperwork and finished my puzzle. Then I called F to come and get me.

We went to Cocos for dinner and I had their new dish, grilled chicken Genovaso. It was really good. Basically, grilled chicken with basil sauce and veggies on it. It was on a bed of mashed potatoes. I had the set, so it came with a bun and soup. Yum. They've changed their menu now and I was extremely surprised to see that Cocos has a version of Poutine now. I told F that I'll have it next time we go! But, should I test it? Poutine is such a Canadian thing that I'm not sure it should be Japanized. Still, I guess I should give them credit for trying? I'll fill you all in later.

We came home and we watched So You Think You Can Dance. It was a pretty good show tonight and I found myself really impressed by most of the dancing. It was also interesting to see Toni Basil as a judge. I haven't seen her in ages!

So, that was my day. Not bad, and a hundred times better than yesterday. Yay. Talk to you tomorrow. Night!

April 19, 2010

Monday - Bit cloudy, warmish I think.

Not a great day to be honest. I got up eventually and got on with my day. Around 2 in the afternoon I was hit with a horrid headache right behind my eyes. I couldn't read, didn't even want to think about looking at my computer. I decided that being hungry was probably to blame, so I made some scrambled eggs and watched the end of a James Bond Movie. After it finished I went back to bed for a while.

I got up around 5 and made some coffee. My headache was still there, and two tylenol hadn't shifted it. I thought that maybe I was going through caffeine withdrawal, hence the coffee. It didn't sit well with me. I turned off the lights, napped on the couch. Around 6:30 or so I got up, lost my lunch and then went to bed. F came home a bit later.

He wanted to go for dinner and surprisingly I did feel better by then. I suggested New York, New York as I could have some fairly plain chicken there. I didn't need anything too difficult to digest. We hit the drugstore on the way there, then had a nice if quiet dinner at the restaurant. I noticed when we drove in that they had the spelling mistake corrected in their big sign. Yay.

On the way home we stopped at my school to set the heater and then visited the grocery store for a few supplies. I got some yogurt and some things for my lunch tomorrow. I was going to buy something for dinner tomorrow night, but I'll be a little late tomorrow night.

At home, F had the news on and I made some tea. It was a nice soothing rose tea. Hubby was interested in the Space Shuttle but missed the bit where they said they wouldn't land today, maybe tomorrow.

I'm feeling much better tonight, but think I should have an earlier night than usual. Although I'm not "busy" tomorrow at work, I really should make sure I'm in better condition than I was today!

So that's it for me. I don't think I'm getting a cold or anything, maybe just need a holiday! Talk to you tomorrow night probably. Night!

April 18, 2010

Sunday - Mostly sunny and clear.

I wasn't feeling that great today. I got up and I felt drained. F, poor thing, was quite genki and wanted to go out exploring but I begged off. It feels like I've pulled a muscle in my thigh and it's painful doing anything like bending or walking. Plus, my heel still hasn't healed as much as I would have hoped. So, when he said he wanted to go and tour the area around the movie set/museum I just couldn't face it.

We had lunch at the Daiichi Hotel and it was okay. I'm not sure what it is, but their meat dishes are always a little salty. After lunch, we stopped at a shoe store and I looked for some shoes for myself. I couldn't find any I liked.

We came home and F decided to spend time in the car with the GPS planning out our road trip that I was so worried about. He came in and told me that to drive between the two cities he wanted to stay in would take 5 hours. Holy cow. And then, to come back from the farthest one would be even longer. He asked me if I thought we should cancel the second city. I said yes. In the future, I'd like to go there, but right now I can see too many problems. What he's done therefore, is cancel the far off hotel and managed to get a second night in the first hotel. Yay. I would MUCH, MUCH rather spend two days in one place than drive so far from home and worry all the time about coming back. We thought about staying in the proverbial love hotels, but with it being Golden Week and us not knowing where they are, thought it would be a bit chancy of us. I told him we'd have to start looking at 5 pm, they'd be expensive, plus we'd have to bring food with us because once you're in, you can't leave. Not that I'd know or anything!

I read a bit of my book in bed for a while, then had snuggles. Don't know why, but snuggles makes me sleepy. I got up after a while though. F wanted dinner around 6:30 so we went to Gusto. It was okay. Really crowded tonight and one of the waiters was very new. I saw him wandering around looking for a table, and when I saw what he was carrying told F that I thought it was our food. Sure enough, it was! No wonder my burger wasn't so hot. He'd also forgotten one of F's dishes.

After dinner I suggested a drive by the park, F countered with a visit to the shoe place across the road. Okay. We went in, 20 minutes before closing, and looked at shoes for me. Some were nice, but not in my size, and some were in my size but not very nice. F found me a pair of really ugly shoes...I wasn't too impressed. I want my feet to be comfortable, not beacons of ugliness. Finally we found a couple of pairs that looked okay. The first pair wasn't a good fit, the second was. Hubby offered to buy them for me (yay) so we got them. At the cash register, I had a very old stamp card that they took, and they had a deal for a 300 yen discount if you did something with your cellphone. Hubby tried to do it for about 15 minutes before it worked. I offered to give him the 300 yen instead. Honestly. Time is money.

We drove by the park and the blossoms aren't out fully. They're starting, but not quite there. We'll both be a bit busy this week so aren't sure if we'll be able to go and see them together. I could always go alone I suppose.

We came home and watched The Sting together. I sat on the couch for it, not at my computer. It was fun. I don't know if I've seen it all the way through before or not. Redford was so gorgeous, and Newman wasn't bad either. F had never seen it before! I can't believe that really.

And that was my day. I felt sorry for my hubby that we didn't do a lot today, but I just didn't want to do anything adventurous today. I'm tired and achy and probably would have whined all over the place if we'd gone out. Don't want that!

Talk to you tomorrow! Night!

April 17, 2010

Saturday - Snow in the morning, rain the rest of the day.

I woke up this morning still a bit miffed at a certain husband, so when he moved in for a snuggle I got up and took my shower. Afterwards I decided there wasn't much point in being angry for the rest of the day, it would only escalate and we'd end up having a bad weekend. Good call!

We had breakfast at Jiro for a change and then F dropped me off at work. I got busy. My first class went well and we had a good time. I even invented a game on the spot to play with her and it went quite well. Usually with this book I teach two pages over two classes. However, with her, I could almost teach a page and a half over one class. It's not quite enough to go for it, but we often have too much time to kill at the end of class.

In the space between my classes I did the school's laundry and a bit of prep. I also listened to some cds that a friend sent me. I got to listen to some cool jazz (and to think 10 years ago I would NEVER have put the words cool and jazz in the same sentence!) and then the soundtrack for Priscilla. That is a great one. Too bad I couldn't play it louder though.

My 4 pm student called to say that she couldn't come today. Her university class was going overtime. It's a shame, but it was nice of her to let me know. I did up my bookkeeping instead.

My final class went really well. Today we did comparatives and it was fun. She's a bit too quiet, but I usually manage to make her laugh. She's still young, so I'm hoping as she gains confidence she'll speak more.

After classes I did paperwork and cleanup, set up for Tuesday's first class, and then finally called F. He came to pick me up.

We went to Hachimonjia for him to get a couple of tourism books on northern Tohoku and then to Grado for dinner. We both had the same thing, their daily meat special. Today it was beef and chicken and quite yummy. While we were there, the TV had Ratatouille on, so we were watching it. I thought it was a bit odd that an Italian restaurant was playing a movie about a French rat that cooks, but, hey, this is Japan after all! Anything goes. Also, the waitress asked if I get an English newspaper. When she found out that I do, she wanted to ask if I could give them the papers after I read them! I'm tempted to ask if I can get a permanent discount, but on the other hand, I don't mind recycling them, so it's okay. They cut up newspapers to put under the soup plates, and they usually use English ones.

At home tonight, F made us some coffee and we watched The Sarah Connor Chronicles and then I watched Little Britain after F went to bed.

That was pretty much my day. It turned out to be pretty good after all. Hurray for that. Night.

April 16, 2010

Friday - Sunny and a bit cold.

My day started well...not sure what happened. I was late to bed again, but since I had no plans for today I didn't care.

I did oversleep this morning, no biggie. I got up, dressed finally and then watched a bit of TV. I watched some news and then found Robin and Marian, the old Sean Connery/Audrey Hepburn movie. It was good, and I was a little sad because I've always wanted to see it. I missed the very beginning and I needed to go out so I would miss the end too. I didn't want to tape it, although I probably should have!

I headed out on my bike a bit after 2 pm. I first went to a post office and made a small coin deposit, then to the bank to make a business deposit and have my passbook updated. After that, I biked off to my personal bank to get my passbook fixed. The magnetic strip isn't working again. Sigh. Hard to update it when it doesn't work. Done all my business finally. Yes. Then, it was time for lunch.

I went to a place that I'd been to once before with an student, many, many years ago. It's a little out of the way, but I have always wanted to go back. I wasn't sure if the kanji on the door meant it was okay to go in, so I asked and the worker said it was. I went in and had a seat. The probably owner, definitely cook, asked if I could understand Japanese. I told him that I could a bit. I ended up having chicken saute with rice, miso soup, and salad. After I had cafe au lait. It was very nice. There was even a salad bar and the cook told me that it was okay to go back. I appreciated that because in smaller restaurants I'm not sure if it is okay or not. I had a big meal and it was delicious! When I paid I was surprised. I think he must have given me a discount or a "service" drink because it was quite cheap. Yay. I'm not complaining.

I came home and before I came into the apartment did a bit of weeding in the non-flower bed under our window. Hurray for me. Then, I came into the apartment. I had a quiet time on my computer for a while. F came home a little bit before 7 pm and wanted to go out right away.

Fumihiko of course wanted noodles but I told him that I wasn't interested. I countered with Kintaro sushi. The good thing that he could have as much as he wanted and I could have as much as I wanted, or didn't want. I was still quite full from lunch, so wasn't hungry. I think I had about 4 dishes, F a few more.

After dinner, he suggested karaoke. I was dying to go, but trying to be responsible, I put him off for tonight. I am scheduled for 3 classes tomorrow and I want to be in good voice for them! In turn I suggested going to Mr. Donut for coffee. We went and had a nice time. They played some great music and it made me wish I had gone to karaoke.

We came home and watched Desperate Housewives on tape and then I asked F about our holiday during Golden Week. We're going driving north. We've got hotels for two nights, but after the second night we have nowhere to stay. F has got us stopped in a place that is 7 hours away and he's okay with that. I am not. I think that means we'll be driving all day. Frankly, I don't think my hip will take that. I'm just getting over my sciatica by being really careful about my posture when I sit in the car, but 7 hours? Yikes. I tried to find us another hotel but it's the middle of Golden Week and probably Hanami season too, so there's nothing.

We've been discussing what to do and I suggested not going to the second place, but he doesn't want to do that. I also have been told for the 50th time that I'm not supposed to talk to him while he's using his computer. Oh really? I know it is difficult for him to concentrate, but there are times when I have to give him some input. He was also complaining that going south would have been easier, but I wanted to go north. True, I did say that I wanted to go north sometime...SOMETIME, but not necessarily this holiday season. It's funny how I'm always blamed for things like this.

I'm thinking about not going anywhere now. He can go if he wants to, but really going to 2 far off cities for one night each means that we won't get to see anything anyway. He'll be driving all the time and I won't be having much fun.

Anyway, my night is over. I think I'm going to go to bed soon. I really just want this day to be over. Pity, it started so well, and it was fun up until we came home. Night.

April 15, 2010

Thursday - Cold but sunny. Windy.

A good day. I went to bed quite late last night too. I wasn't tired for ages and then suddenly I was. I got up at an okay time, but took an extended nap right afterwards so I suppose it wasn't such a good thing.

In the afternoon I did some work on my computer. I made a new schedule for me to show students if they want to move classes around. I really should take a copy of it to the school.

This afternoon I made another kabocha omelette but I did some tweaking on it. I thawed the squash first, then after I heated it I mashed it with some butter and cinnamon, then put it in my omelette with some cheese. Yum. Much better than the one from a couple of days ago.

I headed off for work a little after 5. I had planned to go earlier, but the end of Red Cliff was on and I found myself watching it. Some of the stunt work was amazing and I couldn't leave! The end part was very exciting and even though it was in a language I don't understand (Chinese) with subtitles in a language I can't read (Japanese) I didn't want to turn off the TV. Some day maybe I'll pick up the DVDs in Canada or something.

The ride was easy but a bit cold. I stopped at the drugstore on the way there for some soup pasta for Saturdays at my school. It's a long time to be there without a snack.

My class tonight went quite well. The girls were in a good mood and we all had fun. It was basically just greetings, but I think they learned a little. As they won't be able to come next week, I sent them off with a book each. The older one got a Starter level book, the younger one got a children's ESL book. I hope they can try reading them.

I spent an hour or so tonight doing paperwork and checking lessons for next week. I took my time and tried to relax. I got a message that annoyed me a bit though. My husband texted me that he was leaving his party early. Hmm.

Okay, back up a bit here. Last Sunday, he told me that he had an overnight party on Thursday. I was thrilled to be honest. I'd get to have a quiet evening in our apartment, could go out for dinner by myself (without the ubiquitous question about did I want soba) and then maybe even watch a nice film at home by myself. Then Tuesday he told me it wasn't overnight. He'd be coming home afterwards. Okay, whatever. My plans for a fun night came crashing down. Then on Wednesday, he announced he wasn't even going to drink at his said party. Well, he already wrecked my plans...I didn't care. So, I planned that since he would have already eaten, I would take myself out for my dinner as previously planned, and then come home by bicycle. I didn't tell him this. He was supposed to be out at a party, having a good time.

After the text came I was worried in case he decided to pick me up after work. I really didn't want that. So, I left as soon as I could and biked to Gusto. I had a nice dinner there, and I read my book and tried to relax. I managed quite nicely too.

I bicycled home, locked my bike up in the terribly dark bike shed and then came into the apartment. Or tried to. The door was barred. Sigh. I got him to open up and then I was home. Since he ate something later, I guess that he really didn't eat enough at the party. He may have been waiting for me to go out for dinner, but you know what? I just didn't want the hassle. When it is just me there's no debate over where to eat and I just was happier doing it my way.

Of course, I didn't get to watch any films that I wanted, except we did watch a repeat of ER at 11. Anyway, he's off in bed now and I'm still trying to understand why I'm so resentful that he didn't have an overnight stay. I know why I'm annoyed, but I think I'm more annoyed than I should be.

Anyway, that's it for me. Tomorrow I'm off work, but I really should make a bank run and see what's going on in my accounts. Talk to you later! Night.

April 14, 2010

Wednesday - Cold and very windy. A little hail along the way.

We both went to bed very very late last night. I started watching The Onion Movie which was silly but quite funny in places, and F watched right along with me. He went to bed about 3:30 and I followed a little later. I had really just planned to tape the movie, but didn't.

This morning it was very hard to get up, but I had to do it anyway. I had an appointment at the hospital. F and I had a bit of toast before we left for the hospital. In the car on the way there, I checked for my insurance card and hospital card, but my wallet wasn't there. I finally got F to stop the car and turn around. He doesn't always understand what I mean. I knew exactly where my wallet was, so we weren't delayed for long.

The hospital was fine and we were in and out of there reasonably quickly. I think I'm done there for now. If my wisdom tooth does act up, I may have to go again to get it out, but if not...I'm all for leaving it in place. Now to find a regular dentist to make a bridge for me. Oh joy. Thankfully F has finally realized that I'm not just talking out of my hat when I say that I don't want to go back to the dentist he always made me go to before.

We had a late breakfast/early lunch at Cocos. It was fine, and then we came home for a bit. We had a snuggle and then F had to leave for work.

I watched my Tuesday night TV, Criminal Minds and Project Runway and then the tail end of Octopussy. I surfed around and found a few things on TV but nothing that was really interesting. Before I left for work, I made myself a snack of scrambled eggs on English Muffin. Yum.

The ride to work was happily uneventful today. It was cold however. Really cold. The wind was very strong and made bicycling a lot of work.

At school I got ready, checked my set up, and then read the paper. I stopped a few minutes before class time to get my personal stuff done --toothbrushing, lipstick on, hair combed, etc and it was a darn good thing I did. My student showed up 10 minutes early. I let him in and his mother was with him. With a lot of sign language and sort of understanding on my part, we worked out that my student's club day is changing and so he has to change his class time and day. Sigh. After today, he's going to come on Thursday. It's a day when I have 2 other lessons so I think it might be a bit stressful as he's not always the best student. (Although, to be fair, he has improved greatly in the last year or so.)

My second student came too and we had a good class. She's renewed and will stay with me for a bit longer so I'm quite pleased. I did ask if she wanted to start coming earlier on Wednesdays, but she didn't think so. Sigh. I asked her to talk about it with her mother. I would like to get out of there a little earlier if I could on Wednesdays, and I would have thought she would too!

F picked me up after nine and we went to New York, New York for dinner. I had chicken, F had udon. Quelle suprise. He's on this major noodle kick and frankly it's grossing me out. I just don't want to eat Japanese noodles anymore and it seems to me that it's all he wants to eat. I have a fairly big suspicion that my beloved had noodles at home when he was waiting for me to finish work. I think he's going to turn into a big old noodle!

At home we had a bit more snuggle time, before I watched So You Think You Can Dance. I was sad about the male dancer, not so much about the female one. F basically fell asleep in bed. I tried to get him to take his bath, but he wouldn't. He's moved to a new position at his work and he's having a hard time of it. His predecessor didn't set him up well...left him a floppy disk to use in the office...none of the office computers use floppy disks anymore...that kind of thing. He's stressing out and doesn't know how to handle it. His back/neck never does well when he's under stress either. Sigh.

Tomorrow, F has a party after work. Originally he told me it was an overnighter so I had planned a fun evening for myself, but it isn't overnight after all. I'll be coming home from work and dinner out (going to treat myself) and he'll probably be home by then. Sigh.

Anyway, I've got to get some sleep sometime, so I'll say goodnight then. "Goodnight then."

April 13, 2010

Tuesday - Rainy, rainy, rainy

A pretty good day. I got up to watch the news, but it was baseball instead. Darn. We're back to that are we? Bleck. Cannot stand baseball.

I lazed around this morning, not doing much of anything to be honest. In the afternoon I watched Medium from the weekend. I have to say that I enjoy the show, not so much for the psychic stuff, but for the family part of it. It seems like a real family...or the way it should be. Anyway, don't want to get on a soapbox about it.

In the afternoon I made myself an omelette and tried something new. I had some kabocha in the freezer, so I took a couple of pieces out, heated it up, then sliced it and added it to my omelette de jour. I used some processed camembert cheese with it too, so I had an interesting omelette. The kabocha didn't really add too much taste, but did make the texture quite interesting.

I bicycled off to work in the rain. It wasn't terrible, but an odd thing happened on the way. I was going over a bridge and there were about 5 school girls coming towards me on their bikes. Four of them were on the other side of the sidewalk, one was on my side. All of a sudden just as they were getting really close to me, the four of them all switched to my side and wouldn't move over. That meant I had to switch to the opposite side. I'm afraid that I wasn't exactly gracious about it and let out rather a few swear words at them. It honestly seemed like they were willing to hit me rather than stay on the other side. And of course being a foreigner I would have been to blame...okay, technically I'm not supposed to ride on the sidewalk, but that particular piece of road is a main thoroughfare and I'm not going to risk it.

I only had one class today as one of my students had cancelled today. I used the time at my school wisely today. I vacuumed and dusted, and did a good job of it. I taught my lesson and afterwards checked tomorrow's classes. I arranged some homework for one of my students tomorrow too.

I called F to come and get me, which he did. We went to Fireball for dinner and had pizza and pasta. The pizza was great. It was chicken and gorgonzola cheese and was really nice. The pasta was pork cheek in a tomato cream sauce and wasn't that great. It was probably the least favourite of my dishes that I've ever had there. Usually I love the pasta there, even tomato cream ones, but not today. F was even more underwhelmed than I was.

We came home and watched So You Think You Can Dance. There wasn't a stand out performance for me like there was last week. The Bollywood one last week was amazing. Today, some of them were good, but I wasn't blown away. And, I never agree with the judges. They like ones I think are bad!

That's about it for today. I'm watching ELO in concert and will probably post this and go to bed soonish. Tomorrow I'm back to the hospital to see the new dentist and discuss my wisdom tooth. I'm thinking that I'm going to keep it unless there is a pressing reason for me to have it out. Enough trauma for my mouth this year.

I'm done. Catch you tomorrow? Night.
