March 31, 2010
Today was okay. The news moved to 9:00 am this morning and I managed to get up to watch it. However, I fell asleep on it and had to rewatch it later! Serves me right for staying up so late the night before.
I had a mostly quiet day at home today. I watched Criminal Minds and Project Runway and I enjoyed them both. Project Runway was interesting. They brought back the eliminated designers from this season and matched them with people still on the show and made them do a zodiac inspired dress. Pairs don't usually go over well on the show. Sometimes the designers act like their partners don't know anything and can't be trusted. Hmm.
In the late afternoon I went to the post office to mail those books to a friend. Finally. After that, I went to Kaneta, one of the cheaper clothing shops in this area. I was looking for anything that might catch my eye for my friend. I didn't find anything, but had a good snoop around anyway. I've sometimes found great stuff there, sometimes, like today, nothing.
F didn't get home tonight until quite late, so I watched a couple of episodes of The Big Bang Theory. I really like that show, and it doesn't hurt that Barenaked Ladies do the theme song either!
When he did come home, we had an okay dinner at Kintaro Sushi. It was late so there wasn't as much choice as we usually have. Still, it was fine. We went to my school to set the heater and then to the grocery store for a few essentials.
At home we had a quiet evening and then watched So You Think You Can Dance. At 12:30 I watched Weeds while F was having his bath. It was funny/scary tonight. I hope I can catch the next episode.
And that was my day. I'm back at work tomorrow and I have a couple of evening lessons. I have a few things that I need to do during the day and I hope that I will eventually get done. That's it from me. Night!
March 30, 2010
Unbelieveable! I woke up this morning to a world of white. Our parking lot was covered in snow. It wasn't deep, just a couple of inches, but still. It's nearly April. Does Madame Earth know what she's doing?
Today F and I had to go back to the hospital to see how my gum was doing. Despite me not thinking it was doing that well, the dentist said it was. It's healing well he said. He did give me a few more pain pills which was nice of him, I guess. After that, F and I went to pick up my medicine.
We had lunch in the Washington Hotel. They have a very cheap and cheerful lunch. It was 700 yen each and we both had the same thing. Beef Stroganoff and soup. It came with as much salad as we wanted, plus cake and coffee or Japanese tea. The Stroganoff was tomato based, rather than the cream style I grew up on, and it was served with rice rather than noodles. I'm not sure why it was called Beef Stroganoff! The soup was a warmish, solid cross between chowanmushi and clam chowder. The best thing about the lunch today was the view. We were on the 8th floor so it was rather nice. The weather changed often and we got to see it all.
We went to S-Mall to buy my bus tickets for the weekend, then came home. F was supposed to go to work in the afternoon, but he kept putting it off. Finally he left.
I had a quiet time at home until it was time to go. I decided to go a little after 4 pm as I had two evening classes and wanted to do some prep for one, AND run some errands. I stopped at a convenience store and bought some sandwiches and then the drugstore to get sweetener and munchies.
I got to my school and got to work. I prepped the class, ate my sandwiches and then waited for my student. And waited. And waited some more. After 10 or so minutes I called her. She was busy at work and had forgotten our class. Oops. We'd scheduled it on Saturday so I thought she'd remember. Oh dear.
My second class did happen and went well. We talked about people who are sort of psychic vampires, the kind who are always depressed and make you feel depressed too. She talked about her ex-customers and I mentioned an ex-student who was a bit like that.
F and I had dinner tonight at Fireball and it was really good. We had a pointcard that gave us a free pizza tonight so we had that plus some pasta. The pasta we chose was chicken and tomato cream sauce. The pizza (we couldn't chose it) was meat with avocado, mizuna and wasabi mayonnaise. It was amazing. So good. We really enjoyed our meal tonight. The restaurant is a little bit like a diner, but ever since we've started going there, we've been impressed by the food. Tonight's dinner was even cheaper than our lunch! Hurray for that.
We came home and watched So You Think You Can Dance. I think we'd both like the show a bit more if that one judge would just stop screaming! Some good routines today.
And that was about that. F has to work tomorrow, but luckily I have the day off. I have errands to run though and I'll have to watch tonight's episode of Project Runway. Got to go! Night.
Lovely, Snowy, Tsuruoka
March 29, 2010
Had a quiet morning at home. I got a fax from a student cancelling her class tomorrow so I faxed her back and then got on with my day.
I watched the weekend's telly, read the newspaper and for good measure even cut up the milk cartons for recycling. I wrapped up some books to send to a friend and I had a look at my friend's birthday presents. I still need to get her something else. I'm not entirely sure what yet.
I was going to pop out to the post office when I looked outside and was horrified to see it was snowing. There was a couple of inches on the ground out there and it was really coming down. Sigh.
I stayed home. When F came home, we went out for dinner, but also made a quick stop at the electronics shop for some printer ink for my school. After that, we went to New York, New York, which was just across the road from the shop. We had a cheap and cheerful dinner there.
We came home via the school to set the heater for tomorrow, and via the gas station to buy some kerosene. Once we were at home, we watched the movie I'd taped off WOWOW tonight. It was Definitely, Maybe and it was quite good. It was a kind of rom-com, but had a twist to it. It was not a typical romance movie which made it interesting for us both. After that we watched Grey's Anatomy. Tonight was the big season finale. It was good, except F did the thing that he always does. He half watches the show while he plays with his cell phone. That meant I had to explain to him what happened. Gah! He can't multi-task!
Later on, we watched a really bad made in Canada cheapie disaster movie. During the movie, I introduced F to the goodies my friend had sent last week. He got hot cocoa and Triscuit. He'd never had Triscuit before and was very impressed! And, so was I. It had been a long time since I'd had any.
So that was my day. Hopefully, tomorrow will be okay. I have a dental appointment at 10:00 am. After that, F has to go to work, and so do I. I don't have to go until later on though.
Wish me luck with the dentist please, and think warm thoughts. Hopefully the snow will melt enough to let me ride my bike to work tomorrow! Night.
March 28, 2010
An okay day. I got up and hubby was watching Rocky 2. I wasn't too interested, but didn't want to spoil his fun, so I grabbed the paper, my glasses and went to the bedroom, got back into bed and read. It was really nice to be honest.
We went out for lunch finally, to the Grand El Sun. Hubby had fish and I had carbonara plus some carrot and pepper soup. It was amazing! After lunch, we came home right away and instead of watching a movie, I went to bed and slept for hours. When I woke up, I noticed hubby was watching another Rocky movie, so there was no point in staying up. Finally I got up and told him I'd stay up if he'd watch a movie like we agreed to at lunch.
We decided to watch Memento, so we did. It was a unique movie. It was basically backwards. It is one of those films that you really need to watch carefully to understand what is going on.
We went out for dinner. As always we argued about where to go. We tried about 3 different places, but we couldn't find a place that was open. F finally took me to a place that he wanted to go, but I didn't really want to go to. It was of course another Japanese place. Not my favourite, but it was okay.
We came home and had a quiet evening in. F's back is bothering him again, and my mouth is bothering me too. Sigh. We're a great pair!
And that's about it for me. I have lots of things to do tomorrow. I have to send a couple of packages, so I need to do that. Hopefully I can get everything done. Anyway, that's it for me. Talk to you tomorrow? Night.
March 27, 2010
Today is the 13th anniversary of my arrival in Japan. I can hardly believe that I have been here for so long. To read about my arrival just go here.
Today I got up and watched the news, then showered. We watched another documentary on NHK about a choirmaster who is trying to give a small town pride in itself. It was quite inspirational. I've never been in a choir. My university had one, but I wasn't a singer in those days, and I wasn't (and am not) a particularly religious person so didn't think I belonged in a choir. Now I'd probably give it a go!
F and I went out for brunch. Today we went to Cocos instead of Gusto. It was a nice change and I think we both enjoyed it. He dropped me off at my school and I got to work.
I was quite busy today. I had 4 classes, and they all happened. However, the third student of the day only came for 20 minutes which was sad, but at least she put in an appearance. One of the students finished her lessons today too. It was sad to see her go. Although she's fairly low, she was quite good at communicating or getting her idea across. She made me some lovely coasters as a goodbye present, which are far too nice to use as coasters!
After my last class I cleaned up the school fairly quickly, did paperwork and then called F to come and get me. He did, bless him!
We had dinner in a Japanese restaurant, which wasn't really my choice, but I have to admit, was good! We had a noodle-tempura-sushi combo meal and it was yummy. I'm still very much on soft food, so it was perfect. I had udon and F had soba.
We came home and watched Transporter, so I got my Jason Statham fix for the week. Mmmm. Jason Statham. He's on my wish list...and he's laminated!!! The movie finished and I quickly switched it over to the Sarah Connor Chronicles. That show is interesting and weird.
And that was my day. I still have quite a bit of pain from my mouth. It has been bleeding a bit and I still take the painkillers from the dentist.
No plans for tomorrow. Hopefully will just take it easy for a change. I need a day like that! Night.
March 26, 2010
An okay day. I got up and watched the news. I lazed around the apartment for most of the day. I had decided to just keep today as a "take it easy" day. I ate a couple of meals because I had to take my medicine with food.
In the afternoon I watched Daniel Craig in Layer Cake. It was interesting. He was good as ever, and it's always lovely to see Colm Meany in films.
F was late tonight. He called me around 6:30 to say he was still working and wouldn't be home for quite a while. Since he wasn't there and nothing was on TV, I decided to watch a couple of episodes of Corner Gas. It was so funny. I enjoyed it a lot.
F made it home around 8 and we went out for dinner. I suggested the okonomiyaki place as okonomiyaki is fairly soft for me to eat. We went there. It was quite busy, but we were able to get a table. We had a nice meal. After, when we were getting ready to leave, a group of teens left before us. They had their picture taken with the owner of the shop. I told F that I thought they were rather nice kids. They weren't loud and obnoxious, the way some teens are. It turns out they were band members who had just finished high school and were going to start university soon.
After a quick pass at my school to set the heater for tomorrow, we came home. F did a channel surf on TV and found Deep Impact, so we rewatched some of that. I didn't really like it when it first came out and still didn't like it now. I don't think I saw it in the theater. I did see Armageddon and hated it too, so think it's just the genre.
And that's about it for my day. It's been really quiet. Tomorrow I'm scheduled for 4 classes. I just hope I can last that long! Wish me luck. Night.
March 25, 2010
An okay day. I got up this morning, turned on the heater and the lights and went back to bed for a few minutes. It was nice. I got up in time to watch the news and stayed up. I made the bed and then did laundry. Lots of laundry!
I decided to take today as easily as possible, so I did. I had breakfast so that I could take some medicine. I watched the Italian cooking show this morning, then a bunch of TV that I had taped since last week. I have one more thing to watch, a movie.
I cooked myself lunch and decided to forgo my usual omelette. I had scrambled eggs instead and I think it was a good call. I managed to eat them, plus a couple of sausages and an English muffin. The muffin was the hardest bit as it had black sesame seeds in it and they kept getting stuck in my teeth.
I biked off to work in the rain. I went directly there today and didn't stop anywhere. It was really rainy and my cape wouldn't stay down, so my knees got wet. However, I was at the school around 5 and I made it safely so that was great.
I changed and set up for my classes. When the students came, we had a good time. I did some things a little bit different today and they worked rather well. Hurray for that.
F called me around 9:30 to see if I was ready to come home. I wasn't quite, so he agreed to wait 10 more minutes at home and then come. That was perfect. I was able to get everything done before he arrived. Yay.
We had dinner in Cocos tonight. I had something I'd never had before, a doria. That's a bit like macaroni and cheese, only with rice instead of macaroni. It was good. It was soft for my teeth and had an egg and a little meat in it for protein. Yay. Hubby had a maguro-don.
After dinner we came home and had a quiet evening together. I'm on my computer, the mister is on his cell phone.
So that's about it for me. I'm still in quite a bit of pain. I've been taking my medicine, but I didn't want to take the bigger amount I'm allowed to today in case I fell asleep during my classes. As it was, I very nearly fell asleep! I was so tired.
Night!
March 24, 2010
Egads! Today was not the best day for me. I got up on time, watched the news, did some computer stuff. F came back from his doctor and we went out for lunch.
We did our usual running around trying to find a decent lunch to eat, and failing miserably. After our first two choices didn't pan out, we went to a buffet lunch at a farmer's market/spa place. It was okay. Some of the food was great, some was okay, and all of it was cold.
We came home for a bit, I watched Project Runway. I think the right person was sent home this time, although I thought she was quite cool.
We went over to the hospital, checked in and then the evilness began. F had a big long talk with the dentist about if I really needed to get my tooth out or not. I was hoping not, but if I had to do it I really wanted to get down to it. I won't go into too many details but it was bloody painful! The tooth came out, but part of the root broke off so the dentist had to go fishing for it. Ouch.
We picked up my medicine at the pharmacy (Not in the hospital...what kind of weirdness is that?) and came home. I took a couple of pills and went to bed. I was extremely glad that I had cancelled my classes today. F had thought I would be able to teach them. I didn't. I was right. Basically we slept (yes, I had company!) until after 9 at night.
Then we went out. I went to my school to set the heater for tomorrow and F picked up my bike. On the way home we stopped at the grocery store and F got some food. I had been looking forward to making some cream of mushroom soup for myself, but he bought me pumpkin potage. Guess what I ate. Pumpkin potage. It was good, but had corn in it and I really was just jonesing for my Campbells! Poor hub. Sometimes he just doesn't get it.
The rest of the evening was quiet. I ate/drank my soup, had medicine, watched So You Think You Can Dance and then Weeds a bit later.
Now I'm off to bed again as I'm really tired. Night!
March 23, 2010
Today was quite a good day. I got up in time to watch the news, then showered and spent some catch up time with my computer. I spent so much catch up time that I almost forgot to cook my lunch before work!
I rode off to work but did a couple of errands on the way. I went to the bank machine to make a deposit and get my passbook updated, then paid a bill for hubby at the convenience store. Of course, as soon as I came out of the store, the rain started to come down heavily! It didn't last too long and I made it to work without getting completely soaked.
At the school I checked my set up and then did a bit of dusting and prep. My student came and we had a good lesson. We didn't get through as much as I wanted but what we did get through was good. She's a bit of a talker and so am I, so we enjoy seeing each other.
After class, I checked her homework and then got busy again. I had decided a couple of days ago that I would do up my financial books today, so that's what I did. It wasn't too bad at all, just I hadn't done it this year yet. I like doing bookkeeping, and I'm fairly organized (7 years as a bank teller had some effect after all!) It was easy, just time consuming.
My other student of the day came on time and we had a good lesson. We finally finished up the page of the text we've been working on.
After class I did paperwork and cleaned up, then I called F. He got home late and wasn't changed yet, so he changed and then picked me up. We were going to go for noodles (not exactly my choice, but my tooth is sore again soooo...) but the places were all closed. We ended up going for pasta at Trenta. It was good. I think I'll have F's dish next time! We were the only customers and sneaked in just before last order. We did leave before the closing time, but I still felt a little guilty.
We came home and watched So You Think You Can Dance. It was quite good tonight and I enjoyed most of the dances. I wasn't sure if I'd watch the show tonight or not. I've been thinking to stop watching, but F said it was okay.
So that's it. Tomorrow I'm back to the hospital to get that bloomin' tooth out. I'm a trifle nervous, but hopefully all will go well. I've had enough of dentists for the year, but I have to see another dentist on Saturday. Eek. Gotta go. Night!
March 22, 2010
A good weekend. Saturday was a good day. I had to go to the school and classes were fine. After work, F picked me up and we had dinner at Hana and then hit the road. We drove to Yamagata city that night.
We stayed in a new for us hotel, the Toyoko-Inn. I was quite impressed. We had a double room and the price was very reasonable. We had a double bed, very nice new room with all the usual amenities. We even got a free breakfast the next morning. It wasn't really my style of food, but on the other hand it wasn't too bad either. The room was on the smallish size, it is a business hotel after all, but good value.
On Sunday, we got up, had our free breakfast and then visited Toys "R" Us for a quick run through. Sadly that's all we did. I couldn't find anything that I wanted for my school. We hit the road again and drove to Sendai.
We ended up in The Mall in Sendai. We decided to see if we could get tickets to the evening's showing of Avatar in 3D. We could! Woot. We bought tickets, and then had lunch at Capricchosa. After that, we drove downtown and checked into our hotel.
After a bit of down time, we walked to the Apple store, where F picked up the piece of equipment that he needed to connect to the internet with his new computer. Hurray. There's talk that I may be able to use it too. Woot! We hit the HMV nearby. I wanted to see if there were any new DVDS. There weren't really any new ones but while we were browsing, F asked me a question about movies. He wanted to know who was the friend of Clint Eastwood's that had died recently because he wanted to see a film of his. It wasn't until F mentioned salad dressing that I realized he meant Paul Newman! We searched out a computer and got the listing of movies available. We ended up buying The Sting, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Because HMV had a special deal on, we also got Casino Royale, which has nothing to do with Paul Newman, but made me happy!
We walked back to the station, where we had a lovely dinner at our favourite gyutan restaurant, then did a quick shop at the import food store. After that, we went to the hotel, dumped our stuff and took our car out. We drove back to The Mall and went to see Avatar again. I liked it much more this time. The effects were great, but this time, the Na'vi dialogue wasn't subtitled in English, so it was a good thing I had seen it before. I enjoyed it.
After the movie, we drove back to the hotel and had a quiet evening in. We each took a bath and did a bit of reading.
In the morning we got up and had breakfast at the hotel. It was really crowded in the restaurant. I'm not a big fan of the hotel's breakfast and today was an example of why. The buffet gets too crowded and it's nearly impossible to get to the food. The hot western style food is in the same corner as the drinks and there's a real traffic jam. They were nearly out of bread when we got there, and plates and cups were in short supply.
I washed my hair after breakfast by leaning over our bath. I also got a bit of a shock when the bath tilted when I used the edge to help me get up. Yikes.
F decided that he wanted to go to the BIG mall then, so that's what we did. He used his GPS system to help get there. The only problem is that he doesn't really listen to it. It tells him to turn in 300 meters, he'll turn in 200. We end up in the middle of nowhere and I get frustrated with him because it takes forever to get anywhere! We finally did get to the mall, did find parking and went in. We decided to see Sherlock Holmes. For me it was a repeat, but I enjoyed it the first time. Then, passing by a poster I noticed that the Sandra Bullock film was playing. Darn. We could have gone to see it.
After the movie, we finally went to Starbucks for my Assam Black Tea Latte, then found a place and had dinner. We had shabu-shabu and it was quite nice. Then, we hit the road. I slept most of the way back to Yamagata Prefecture, but I managed to stay awake after that.
Back in Tsuruoka, I set up my school's heater, then we did a bit of grocery shopping. Then, home. Whew! What a weekend. It was good, but not expected. I had really just wanted to relax, but on the other hand, we did have a good time.
Night night!
March 19, 2010
Today was good. I got up, even though I went to bed really late last night, watched the news and then thought about going back for a nap but didn't. I had a quiet day at home.
I watched a movie in the afternoon, one I'd taped last week. It was Lars and the Real Girl. I liked it! It was a character piece about a man who had trouble relating to people. He showed up at his brother's house one night with a blow up doll that he said was his fiancee. Instead of having him committed, his brother, pregnant sister-in-law and eventually the entire town went along with it. It was a charming little movie. No car chases, no special effects, just an interesting story.
In the afternoon I made my lunch. I had a box of the Kraft macaroni and cheese that my sister sent for my birthday. It was soooo good! It's funny the silly things that you miss from home.
When F came home we chatted for a bit. He was changing his clothes and the doorbell rang. It was for me! My friend in Tokyo had sent me a box of yummy things. I got some Triscuits and hot chocolate and a movie. Yay! Thank you so much :)
F went off to have a massage for his back, and then when he came back we went out for dinner. After the last two weeks where I cooked dinner on Friday and it turned into a disaster, I decided that I wasn't cooking anymore on Fridays. In fact, I may not cook ever again! The restaurant that we finally agreed on has a good menu and we both had filet pork cutlets. It was nice. We came home via the gas station and the school.
When F came home tonight he suggested going away for the weekend. It's a long one here in Japan, so he suggested either Niigata or Sendai. I'd just been to Niigata, so Sendai was doable I thought. I tried booking a two night stay in one hotel, but I couldn't, so I tried another tack. I booked one night in Sendai, and one night in Yamagata city. Yamagata city is 2 hours away from here, on the road to Sendai, so makes an okay stop. Besides, we're planning to leave after my work on Saturday, so it'll be really late when we get there.
That was my day! Nice goodies, mac & cheese, good movie and some peace and quiet. Night.
March 18, 2010
A good day. I got up reasonably early today and stayed up. Wow. I watched the news and made coffee for myself. That was nice. I spent a quiet morning at home. I watched a bit of TV and had some yogurt. No big deal really.
I headed over to the school a little before 5. It's so nice that it is staying light a little longer. It doesn't get dark until about 5:30 or so now. Yay. I stopped at the drugstore and picked up a few things then hit the school.
Classes were fine today. My first one was quite good. We're finishing up the book in the next couple of weeks. The second one didn't go the way it was supposed to, but it was okay. We talked about the names for animals' young, and also places in which it would be good to live. My student picked San Francisco, I picked Victoria! At the start of class we talked about her going to Toyama to catch something. She was talking about a certain type of fishing that's done around this time of year, but couldn't quite remember the name of the animal that she wanted to catch. She got mixed up between squirrel and squid. It was rather funny and I think my student laughed harder than I did!
After class I finished up and asked F to pick me up. He did and we drove around looking for a restaurant. The first two were closed, the third was really busy, but we waited in the parking lot for a space to park. I had a veggie stirfry and he had udon. And complained about them as usual. Honestly!
We came home and had a quiet evening at home. There was nothing on TV so we just relaxed for a bit.
I'm presently blogging and listening to Adam Lambert again. I really like this cd. I'm not sure that I'll still listen to it next year, but for now it's fun. Anyway, I have to go. Have a good night. Bye!
March 17, 2010
Had an okay day today. Bit perplexing in a way.
Got up this morning, showered, and dressed. F & I planned to leave the apartment at 9:40 and we very nearly made it. We live close enough to the hospital that it didn't matter and we were on time for my appointment.
We saw the dentist, he looked at my mouth and it seems like he's telling me that I have to get a tooth out because there is a problem with it. But, it's not my wisdom tooth. He says it's fine. I want to say, "Nanny nanny boo yah" to the other dentist, but I'm too much of a lady to do that! Anyway, he gave me some painkillers and sent us on our way.
F & I had lunch in the Daiichi Hotel. I had fish for a change and it was nice. Hubs had unagi-don and complained about it, so normal there! We came home afterwards. He was supposed to go to see one of his doctors but found out the office was closed on Wednesday. He thought about going to the other one, but didn't. Basically, he was a couch potato instead. Oh wait...he did do something. He translated a note to a parent for me. Sorry dear. I watched Project Runway which was very cool and the right person got sent home I think. Laura Bennett from a couple of seasons earlier was a guest judge. She wasn't pregnant as far as I could tell!
We went out for a quick snack before my work. It was KFC so not very healthy, or delicious either if I'm honest. Still, it worked. I got F to drop me off at my school. I had a good couple of classes. My second student showed up a bit late and told me that it was because of the snow. Yes, snow. While I'd been in class the few flakes that were in the air had become 5 cm of very wet snow. Yuck.
After I finished up, I called hubby. He came to get me and we had an okay dinner in New York, New York. I had chicken again! This one was grilled though, so not too bad.
We came home and watched the send off show of So You Think You Can Dance. It was okay.
So, that was what happened during my day today. It was okay. I'm glad that I'm not getting the wisdom tooth out, but I'm a bit worried about getting the other tooth out. I'll have to have a bridge made, but the hospital doesn't do that. I'll have to go back to the other dentist, which is a PITA. F is taking off all this time off work just to get my teeth seen to, and then I'll have to go again to another dentist. No idea if I'm even doing the right thing or if there are any alternatives. Bah. Where's the Tooth Fairy when you need her?
Night.
March 16, 2010
Today was a good day. I was at home for much of the day. I relaxed. I gave my feet some TLC as they were horribly dry and sore, unpacked my suitcase from the weekend...no big whoop.
I went to work a little early and did some prep for later in the week. I also prepped for today's lesson then read most of yesterday's paper and a bit of Sunday's too. When my student came, we had a fun lesson.
After class I cleaned up, did paperwork and then read more of Sunday's paper. It was getting late, so I called F and asked him to pick me up. He did, and we had a nice dinner in Grado. Tonight I had pasta, the fettucine with salmon, shrimp and ikura that I like soooo much. It was terrific.
We came home and watched So You Think You Can Dance. The judge wasn't quite as annoying tonight. I keep thinking the dancing isn't as good as the judges do though. I'm not sure what their criteria is. We did enjoy the show.
I have to keep this brief as I'm off to the dentist at the hospital again tomorrow. It's to find out the results of my CT and I'm assuming to see if and when I can have the surgery. Wish me luck! Night.
March 15, 2010
And a good weekend was had by all. Well, mostly. It was an experience, let me tell you all about it.
Hubby and I had a fight on Friday night, remember? I wasn't spoken to for much of Saturday either, and had to ask if we could go out for brunch before my work. I thought things were getting better, but they weren't. We didn't talk during brunch, I went to work and taught my two classes, and then came home again for a bit.
F drove me to the train station, but we were really early so he parked in a parkade nearby. I told him that I didn't want to leave things on such bad terms before I left so he launched into a diatribe about what a horrible person I am at times. Hmmm, 'kay. Not really what I was hoping for. I stormed out of car and left him there. I caught my train and enjoyed my trip to Niigata.
In Niigata I found my hotel, checked in and went for dinner. I came back to the hotel later and actually had an early night. I was in bed by 1 am. Seriously. I got a text message from F at 2:30am, it was rather nice but I didn't reply.
In the morning my bad gum was sore. I had breakfast, which luckily being mostly eggs was soft. I checked out of the hotel and went to the Workshop, stopping at a drugstore on the way for some pain medicine. I took some medicine and went to the workshop. It was okay. Not great. I think the second presenter had good ideas but a bad way of presenting. It put my back up to be honest and the third presenter was nice but has done the same thing before. I left the presentation without buying anything for my school. I had planned to get something, but my gums were killing me. The pain medicine had worn off and I was told that the medicine was only to be used twice a day. Yikes. I thought about going home but decided I didn't want to. I went to the next hotel, checked in and then spent a few minutes texting and then calling F and talking. He sent me a message in Japanese to take to a drugstore so that's what I did. I got something that is the Japanese equivalent to Ambesol and also picked up a stronger pain medicine. When I got back to the hotel I used the liquid first. It helped a lot. I was surprised because it seemed like my whole lower right gum was swollen and I had what felt like an egg sized bump on my jaw. I was in agony for a while.
The medicine really helped though and a few minutes after I took the painkiller I was starting to feel almost okay. I decided to look for a place to have dinner. I ended up in Isetan, on their restaurant floor. I had a lovely pasta dish with porcini mushrooms in a cream sauce. It was expensive, but good. The food was soft too, so it didn't bother me. Since I had time to get to the theater, I decided to take myself to see Sherlock Holmes. I didn't have popcorn, I thought that would be a bad thing for my gums, but did have a drink. I gave myself one last dose of the liquid medicine before the film and then went in. It was good. I really enjoyed it. Robert Downey Jr has a sort of melancholy naturally, so he made a good Holmes and it was nice to see Watson as a man of action too. Jude Law, although ridiculously good looking, was very good in this film. It wasn't the greatest film ever, but it was enjoyable.
I walked back to the hotel, read some of my book, took a bath, and eventually, went to sleep. I slept well and was surprised when I woke up around 7 am. I slept a bit later, but was up by 9 this morning.
I ran down to the hotel bakery, grabbed a couple of goodies and then went back up to the room. I showered, ate and drank some coffee. This morning, I'm happy to report, my jaw was greatly improved and the swelling had gone down considerably. There's still a bump on my jaw, and I think the temperature of it is hotter than elsewhere on my face, but I'm better now. Whew!
I checked out of the hotel and went shopping. I found a locker for my suitcase and hacked around the shops. I didn't buy myself any books, although I did buy 3 readers for my school. I got a couple of things for my friend's present and also had a sakura steamer at Starbucks. I had gone in to see if I could have an Assam Black Tea Latte, but the clerk (barista?) made me come up to the counter before I had finished looking at the board. Darn. I missed my favourite.
I had lunch at 3 pm. A restaurant near the shopping area had a half price pasta and dessert plan available between 3 and 5 pm. I'd never been there before so gave it a try. It was nice. After my lunch, I decided to go back to the train station, so I took out my suitcase from the locker and walked back to the station.
I caught the train home without problems. I even finished reading my P.D. James novel The Private Patient. When we got to Tsuruoka, F was waiting for me in the station. We had a nice dinner at Moku-moku and after a heater set at my school, came home. It was a nice evening together. I watched my US med shows and that was it. Basically, a nice night. Whew.
Oh, one little story from my time in Niigata. I usually take a bath when I stay in a hotel by myself, and I like to use some kind of bath salts or additive. I found one at Franc Franc last night. It was a simple grapefruit bath tablet. I picked up the one they had there that was broken. It didn't bother me, and I planned to use it that night so didn't care that it wasn't in perfect condition. I thought I'd buy it, since no one else probably would. I took it to the cash register and the clerk called my attention to the fact it was broken. I said it was okay. She disappeared...and brought me a new unbroken one. I didn't have the Japanese to tell her that I wanted to buy that one because it was broken! I meekly took the new one, and later that night, when I ran my bath, I broke the tablet into 3 or 4 pieces before adding it to the water!

I got up a little late this morning, but still in enough time to watch the news, or most of it! After that I putzed around, spent too much time on my computer and made a decision. A few months ago I had taped Dirty Dancing. Well, today was the day that I watched it. It was fun. I hadn't remembered how sexual everything was, but I enjoyed it. Patrick Swayze wasn't a great actor by a long chalk, but he was a good dancer!
After the movie finished I decided to go to the bank. I rode off, made a couple of deposits and a withdrawal and then went to the mall. I walked around the 100 yen shop for a bit, but didn't buy anything. After that, I went and had a tea in Doutors. A tea and a nice brisk sit. I read one of my magazines and felt at peace for a bit.
I went home and ended up watching a not very good Jean-Claude Van Damme film, and then F came home in the middle of it. When he came home he wasn't very talkative, and said he was tired. He went to bed and slept for a couple of hours. This wasn't very good for me. I had planned to cook dinner and I wanted to go out to the apartment to set the heater and to the drugstore. I worked on the food prep. I didn't have to do too much, just cut up the veggies, but that does take a bit of time.
When I was ready, I asked him if he'd get up for dinner and he said yes. I started cooking and asked him to make some coffee for us. He did that and then just as I was putting the food on the plates he made a move to turn on the TV. I asked him not to and he got angry and stormed back into the bedroom. Now, he could have just said that there was something in particular that he wanted to watch, but he didn't. Because I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon and won't be back until Monday night I was hoping that we could have a nice peaceful dinner together. If the TV is on, I have dinner with his neck. He wouldn't eat his dinner, and wouldn't even have the coffee that he made. Fine!
I ate, and then cleaned up. I put the leftovers in the fridge. I have the sad suspicion that they'll still be there when I get back on Monday. Since he was still ensconced in the bedroom, I took myself off by bicycle in the dark to set up my heater. I came home.
He came back out, got some food from the store, and then had a slurpy dinner in front of the TV. Watching Olympics. (Didn't they finish???) He left so I turned off the TV. After his bath he went back to bed and shut the door. It's very annoying as it means the bedroom will be cold when I go to bed.
Anyway, I'm going to go to bed soon. I'm also going to Niigata tomorrow for a couple of days. I'll most likely be back on Monday night. No need to miss me too much! Night and later eh!

Thursday - Sunny but cool.An okay day today. When my first alarm rang this morning before 9 I woke up and actually got up. It has been my experience that the fire alarm check people usually show up a little after 9 and I wanted to be ready. I got dressed, made the bed and then waited. I watched the news, with one ear listening for the doorbell. Nothing. They didn't come until 10:30 or something, so I didn't even have to get up so early. It probably was a good thing that I did though.
I had a quiet day at home and just enjoyed myself. I watched Tuesday's Criminal Minds and also Project Runway again. I know, enough already! I got crazy tired around noon and had to take a nap on the couch. I literally couldn't keep my eyes open.
I made my lunch a little early today and then headed off for my school. I wanted to do prep for the classes I had last night for next week. I usually do it the same night, but wanted to leave on time last night. That done, I checked over things for today. I prepared some receipts and then spent about 20 minutes goofing off.
My first class was a little late, but they did come. We had a surprisingly good class, considering it had been about a month since they came last. It was nice to see the students too. My second class also went well. We had some interesting talks today.
F picked me up around 10 pm. That really limits where we can have dinner so tonight we went to Marumatsu. It's a Japanese restaurant, the food is usually just so-so. Tonight I had one of their bigger meals, tonkatsu in egg and it was quite nice. I didn't hate it. F had tempura. We were fairly happy with our meals.
We bought a few groceries afterwards. I'm going to make dinner tomorrow night. I'll be away for a couple of nights and I want to have a home cooked meal before I go.
We came home and F watched that blooming Women's skating thing again. I cannot believe that they are still broadcasting it. Mao was okay, but she didn't deserve to win. Stop driving me crazy with it! (And for heaven's sake, someone please figure out how to dress her. Her costumes are awful. She's what, 18? She's dressed like she's 88. ) At one point F said that she had her "scary" face on. I told him it looked like she was constipated. It wasn't scary. Maybe constipation is scary in Japan? They do seem obsessed with bowel movements here!
That's about it for tonight. I have the day off from work tomorrow, but I have to pack my suitcase for the trip and I hope to make a trip to a bank machine and maybe run a few errands. Wish me luck with that eh?
Night!

This just in from IMDb....Corey Haim has died. It makes me quite sad as he was one of "The Coreys" from my college days. He was funny and talented, but he took a wrong turn somewhere along the way. I liked him in The Lost Boys although he was in a few other films like Lucas and License to Drive.
My day? Was okay. I got up, watched the news and F came back from wherever he'd gone and made coffee for me. Gotta love a guy who does that! I showered and we relaxed around the apartment for a while. We went for lunch to the tonkatsu place and had a nice lunch. Afterwards we came home for a bit. I was so sleepy for a bit that I set my timer on my cell phone and got into bed. I had a 20 minute nap and felt so much better. Then, it was time to go.
We went to the hospital today. We were a little early, so we checked in, then went to the radiology department and checked in there too. We waited about 2 minutes. I'd barely gotten my book opened, let alone started to read it, when they called my name. They were a bit surprised that there were two of us, but F didn't really have to do much besides tell me not to move! I knew that already. I got on the machine, they strapped me in and I spent the next few minutes having my head examined! (I can hear my sister say, "It's about time too!") I did jump at one point because they put a voice on telling me to take a deep breath and hold it. It was in English and I think the sound of the voice surprised me so much the first time I heard it that I couldn't understand it. It took a bit to realize I could understand it! They played it again and I was prepared that time. No sweat.
I was unstrapped, I put my shoes back on, and that was that. F paid (I knew I brought him along for a reason :-) ) and we left the hospital. I go back next week for the explanation.
F and I went to Mr. Donuts for coffee then came home again for a bit. That was nice to be honest. I just wanted to spend a bit of time on my computer anyway.
Around 5 he drove me to work. At the school I changed, ate a sandwich and then got ready for my classes. Tonight, I had two. First time for a Wednesday night I think. My first class went really well. We talked about families, well, vocabulary for family members. I had to be a little careful as my student is from a single parent family and I don't know the whole story. I intro'ed the vocab using pictures of my family and that seemed to work. I do think my student got a kick out of seeing me in my younger days with my bright orange hair! My second student and I talked about ordinals tonight. It was fun and class just flew by. I tried to get her to think about when we use ordinals apart from dates. Since we just had the Olympics, I suggested we used ordinals there a lot to talk about how athletes place. It seemed to work, and we talked about (what else!) Women's figure skating!
After work I did paperwork, and then called F and asked him to pick me up. He did and we went to Grado for dinner. It was very nice tonight. I had chicken and pork. I realized afterwards that it was quite a meat heavy day for me. Sigh. Hubby had carbonara and it looked good.
We came home and watched So You Think You Can Dance, the "who goes home?" show. It was okay, except that female judge is so annoying. I kept the telly on for Weeds at 12:30 but F went to bed. He's had a day of running around after me. I think he'll be glad to go to work. Maybe!
Tomorrow I had the fire alarm inspection at the apartment in the morning and then work in the evening. It should be okay, but one class hasn't come for a while so I hope they remember what they should.
Got to go. Night!
