Wednesday - Hot and muggy, rain at night

An okay day. I woke up when my alarm went off this morning and even weirder got up when it first went off. I think I didn’t even hit the snooze button. I told myself that I could always go back to bed later if I wanted to, but I didn’t.

There wasn’t much on TV. I watched scenes from a movie I’d seen before, then watched the weekend’s CSI. It was okay.

I finished up my column today and sent it in. I think it’s a record for me getting it done before the deadline. Hope it’s okay.

Today in the mail I got some postcards in a package from China. I’d sent a woman in China some of the very popular Japanese shaped postcards and today I received her thank you. She sent about 5 cards, 3 scenic and 2 connected to entertainment. She also sent a little pouch in the shape of a Chinese shirt. I was fair chuffed! AND….Fumihiko got his first card today. He’s so happy. It came all the way from France. I showed him how to register it and we posted the picture to his account.

After he came home and saw his card, he relaxed for a while and then I started dinner. It wasn’t a big deal tonight, just fried chicken drumsticks, tofu and salad with mini tomatoes. It was good, but we were a bit hungry afterwards. F did the dishes and then had some cup noodle. Grr.

We had a fairly quiet evening. F was watching sports again and I was ignoring the TV as much as possible. At 11 I put on Grey’s Anatomy and watched that.

F went to bed fairly early tonight. I stayed up a bit later and then realised that I had to put out the garbage for the morning. Oh yay, I love that job! Anyway, it’s done and now I don’t need to worry about it for a while.

That’s about it for me. I have a class tomorrow night so I’ll be off to the school in the afternoon. F was trying to get me to wait until he comes home, but I don’t get to go to the drugstore (or anywhere) when he drives me, so I’d rather go by myself. Also, on the off chance that F is late, what am I supposed to do? Nope, I’m going to take my bike unless the weather is awful tomorrow. Got to go. Night!

Tuesday - Hot and sunny, muggy in the afternoon

A good day. I slept in a bit this morning, but it was okay. I got up and then went on-line. As I was doing that I realised that Jurassic Park 2 was on one of the WOWOW offshoots, so I ended up watching that. It was followed by Jurassic Park 3 so I had to watch that too. No big whoop really.

I took a shower later on and then decided to go out to the mall. I requested a couple of Postcrossing addresses and then printed them out to take to the mall with me. I took a couple of postcards too.

I made a quick stop at the post office to pay my membership for AFWJ and then went on to S-Mall. At S-Mall I headed to Doutors for an iced tea, sandwich and an almond pretzel. It wasn’t really a pretzel, it was more of a danish, but it was okay. I wrote up one of the cards while I was there, but decided that the card I brought wasn’t so good for the other person. I did a bit of shopping throughout the mall, then just came home.

F came home a little later than I did. He’d had an okay day at work, had to drive to Yamagata-city today. I finished writing the other postcard and then posted the pictures on-line to the Postcrossing site.

We waited a while to go for dinner, and then went to Cocos. F had a burger with rice, I had vegetable coconut curry. It was spicier than I’m used to, but pretty good.

We came home via my school, a mailbox and the grocery store. At home, F wrote a Postcrossing card for someone in Germany, and I watched Silverado which was on TV. I’d seen it ages ago and loved it, but tonight I kept getting interrupted, so it didn’t see as good as before. Also, I tried to change the VCR set up to tape something and it wouldn’t let me stop it to make the change. This so-called new and improved system is not working for me.

Anyway, it is really really late and F is still up. He’s going to be sorry tomorrow I think. I haven’t finished my column yet, but I will…it’s my project for tomorrow. Got to go. Night!

Postcrossing Cards - Incoming

Here's a few of my favourite Postcrossing cards that I have received this month so far.

This one came to me all the way from Romania--Transylvania to be exact! I think it is gorgeous.

When I saw this one in my mailbox, at first I thought it was from my sister and her family. They were on vacation and I knew that they had gone to Yellowstone in the past. However, it was from a Postcrosser who had visited Old Faithful on her vacation.

This card shows a Canadian scene, but is actually sent from the US. The sender bought it on her vacation. It was a real mood-lifter on a not too great day.

Monday - Warm and sunny? I didn’t go out.

I went to bed late so I slept a bit late today too. However, I did get quite busy when I finally got up. I did 3 loads of laundry and hung it up to dry.

I also watched the end of The Wizard of Oz. It’s been years since I saw it, and it was a bit freaky. Fun though.

I finally got stuck into my movie column. I had started a bit of it before, but I have written the body of it I think, I just have to write an intro and a conclusion. At least that’s what I think now! I covered an odd bunch of films, I really did.

F was home a bit late tonight, so I was a bit later when I made dinner. It was just a basic stirfry, but it was good. I used some broccoli, onion, hauksai and mushrooms and added them to a package from the store. F was very complimentary for a change. He did the dishes too, but there really wasn’t that many. Gotta love the one pan meals!

We had a quiet evening. F watched sports most of the night. Every now and then he’d tell me a little factoid from what he was watching, but since I wasn’t paying attention, I had no idea what he was talking about. At 11 pm I watched Medium and also rolled up another ball of cotton. Hopefully I’ll get to do more crochet with it soon.

That’s really about it for me. F is getting a bit frustrated since he hasn’t received any cards yet, and a couple of his haven’t arrived. One of his send-ees hasn’t been online for more than 10 days, so it’s a little sad for him.

Oh, and my dear readers have spoken. I’ll post some of my received cards on this blog, probably under another entry. I hope you enjoy them!

Night!

Sunday - Hot and sunny

A good day.

I went to bed very late last night. Daylight was breaking as I went to bed and that isn’t that early anymore. Late! I obviously slept very late in return.

I dragged myself out of bed before 1 and came through to the living room. F was watching sports on the TV so he seemed quite happy. After a bit though we decided to get going. We stripped the bed and put all the bedding into bags. Then, we loaded it into the car and set off. First up was lunch.

We had a quick and cheerful lunch at Kappa Sushi. We got in almost right away and had quite a few nice things. We also tried their special dessert and sort of wished we hadn’t. It was okay, but it wasn’t good tiramisu.

On the way to the sushi place we noticed a fire engine. F said he’d heard a lot of sirens earlier on. It turns out that the old junk yard near the big corner we always turn on the main road had a fire overnight. The firefighters or investigators were there for hours. We saw them hours later. I’ve always thought that place was a hazard, just didn’t know it would burn. I think a shed or a lean-to as we’d say on the farm burned.

After lunch we tried to find a laundromat. F took us to one he wanted to try, using the scenic route. We got there and it was okay, but not air conditioned and the machines were really small. There were also no vending machines nearby, so we decided to go to our usual place after all. We did and we did our laundry. No big deal.

When we finished hours later, we came home and made up the bed. It’s nice to have fresh bedding again.

We decided to go out for dinner. For some reason I really wanted cold pasta tonight. I just had a hankering for it. I suggested a few places and then we decided to go to Fireball. It’s fairly close and we had a filled up stamp card for a meal for free. We went there but it was a bit busy. Still, we got a table and looked at the menu. The cold pasta on the menu tonight was hamachi-like fish, uncooked tomatoes and avocado. It sounded like it was made for me! We ordered the 2500 set meal, plus another pasta and the drink bar. We split most of the set meal and it was fine for us. We had a very nice meal. F got the coffee at the end, I got most of the dessert, and the pastas we had were lovely. Besides mine, we also had one that was pork, raw tomatoes and vegetables. It was nice too. There was even half a roasted chicken with the meal. We did very well we both thought.

We went to the grocery store afterwards for tomorrow night’s dinner. I think I’ll make my stirfry. No big deal, just a bit of prep, that’s all.

At home again, we chilled for a while, then F said it was okay to put on the movie I taped on Friday. We watched it. It was Going the Distance with Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. It was okay, but honestly, the dialogue was quite sexual and came over as being crude not witty. The stars chemistry was fine (they were a real life couple for a while) but some of it was just too vulgar for me.

And that’s about it for my day. Tomorrow F is back at work and I’m at home, hopefully writing my column. I may take a break and run to the post office. One of my postcrossing cards finally arrived. It took 37 days to get to China. Ack. Such a long time.

Speaking of Postcrossing before I go, would you, my reader, be interested in seeing the postcards I receive or send? I was thinking of either posting them here or posting them in a new separate blog. Any interest?

Thanks! Night.

Saturday - Hot and sunny. Gorgeous day.

A good day.

I went to bed late last night, but still I was in bed before F if you can believe it. I was tired and had to work, so I went to bed. Then, just before he came to bed at 4 am, he crunched up one of his blooming beer cans for recycling and woke me up. He came to bed, trying to be quiet, but what was the point? I’ve told him off several time about that not being a nice noise, but he never gets it. Some day, I’ll have to try crushing something beside his head and see how he likes it.

I was awoken a couple times this morning too by someone so I wasn’t entirely a happy camper when I got up. Still, I showered and got ready for work. F took me to Gusto for breakfast at my request. It was fine. Then, he dropped me off at my school.

My class went well. The student goes through 2 pages per class, the other student I taught this to only went though one. Sadly, my student has sports day next week, so can’t come.

After class, I did a super quick clean up and then left the school. F was outside waiting for me. We zoomed over to the dentist, for what was supposed to be a look-see at the recent repair work I had done, and then a cleaning. Well, it turned into getting two other teeth sealed as there was some problem. It didn’t hurt or anything, but the stuff they put in my mouth tasted terrible! I was let out finally, but was told not to eat for an hour.

F and I came home where I found a postcard waiting for me. It was a lovely one from Transylvania, Romania! It was beautiful and covered in flowers. Really pretty. After I took a picture and uploaded it, I took a nap. The 30 minute nap turned into a 2 hour nap. Oops!

I got up later and we decided where to go for dinner. F wanted yakiniku so we went to a newish place in town. There he proceeded to order stuff that he liked. I did order a bit of stuff for me, but he likes to order a really chewy type of beef that I don’t like. When all the food came and we were cooking it, he was surprised that I kept refusing his meat. I told him that I just didn’t like it. He could eat it, but I would rather not.

After dinner we had a quick run through the drugstore nearby where F got a couple of things for him. We came home afterwards.

At home, I suggested watching a movie, so I pulled some out of a box that my friend Orchid64 had sent to me. I picked 5 and then asked F which one he’d like to watch. It’s a good system really. He picked Peter Pan, and it was a good choice. It was well done. I’ve not seen such close adaptation of the novel. There were some liberties taken with it, but it wasn’t a “Gee shucks, aren’t they all cute?” version.

At 1am I watched Heroes. It was the end of season 3 and was darn good! Next week Gossip Girl starts. I’ll probably try to watch it. I’ve heard of it, but never seen it.

And that’s about my day. It was pretty good. Besides not getting enough sleep last night, I didn’t fight with my husband and I had a painless experience at the dentist. Yay! Night.

Friday - Hot and sunny

A good day!

I got up this morning reasonably easily and stayed up. I relaxed a bit around the apartment and requested a new Postcrossing address. I wrote up the card and took it out later. This one is going to the US. Most of mine seem to go to the US!

In the afternoon I watched a British detective show, Thorne - Sleepyhead. It was really good, and I had no idea what was going to happen. It was rather exciting because of that.

After the show, I went out. I had a late lunch at McDonald first, then continued on to the craft shop. I was pricing and looking at yarn. It was very expensive! To make the item I want, I’d have to spend a fortune and it wouldn’t even be something I’d keep.

I’ll shop around. There’s a few other shops. I don’t want to go down the hundred yen shop route, but it might be the only way I make it!

I visited the drugstore and then came home. I was home for about 40 minutes when F came home, bearing gift. He’d brought us a thing like a long eclair, but without chocolate on top. He put it in the fridge.

We had dinner at the tonkatsu place and it was good. We had different dishes for a change and that was nice. He often makes me order the same thing he gets.

We came home and had a nice evening in. I watched Glee and Desperate Housewives. Well, F tolerated the first one and watched the second one too, so that was nice. I’m now watching Supernatural which as always freaks me out! Tonight’s guest star is one of my favourite Canadian actors, Winston Rekert. He used to be in a great spy/comedy series called Adderly. He played a spy with one hand. It was great! His code name was Beauty1 and I thought it was code for BeautyA, since 1 and A are both firsts. That would mean his code name was Beauty Eh, a phrase that would make a lot of Canadians laugh. Well, my theory anyway.

Okay, show’s over, so I should be hie me thither to bed soon. I have a class tomorrow early afternoon and then a dental appointment. After that, I’m not sure what I’ll be doing as we don’t have any plans. Wish me luck with it all! Gotta go. Night.

August 25, 2011

Thursday - ? didn’t go out.

An odd day. I got up this morning at a decent time. I planned to go back to bed for a bit of a nap, but I got caught up in something on my computer and didn’t. Good thing too as F came home seeking some information from me. He wasn’t in a very good mood either and was quite nasty about the whole thing.

He left and I went back to whatever I was doing. He phoned me for more information and then just hung up on me. Not impressive.

I had a quiet day at home. I did prep the marinade for dinner…and then put the chicken in it. I threw them back in the fridge for later.

Not much happened today. I watched The Spy Next Door, a silly little Jackie Chan film. I thought it was rather interesting in that SPOILER ALERT (if you want to see this movie and need to feel the suspense, skip to the next paragraph!) he married his white American girlfriend at the end. As a person married to an Asian it was interesting to see it happen in a movie.

When F came home, things were cautious between us. He sat on the couch for a while not talking, I went and took a nap for a few minutes. When I came out of the bedroom he went in and closed the door.

I cooked dinner, not really knowing if he’d join me or not. When it was all ready, I called him and he came. He came later though, not at the same time as me. We had grilled lemon-oregano chicken, steamed asparagus and salad. It was nice, but not really enough. I could have eaten a lot more of the chicken, it was so good!
F started the dishes before I had even finished my meal, which was a little disconcerting and rude in my opinion, but whatever. He did them, I guess that’s what I should take from the experience.

We had a quiet evening for the most part. He did some work on his computer, I did some stuff. At eleven I went and watched Royal Pains and rolled another ball of yarn into a center feed ball. Then, I did a little bit of crocheting. The show was quite a good one tonight. It’s interesting. I quite like some of the things that are happening on the show.

When my show was finished, F started watching Judo and then when it finished announced he was going to bed without turning off the TV. I made him turn it off and then he went to bed and shut the door. Gah! Men.

And, to top it all off, today’s the anniversary of the day my Dad died. It’s not a happy day but I didn’t sit around crying. It’s been a long time. I’ll try and do something in the next couple of days to remember him by.

Anyway, that’s it for me. Hopefully I’ll get out of the apartment tomorrow. The weather’s been iffy and I didn’t have anywhere to go today so I didn’t go out. Tomorrow I hope will be different. Night!

August 24, 2011

Wednesday - Cooler, a little rainy.

Today was an okay day. I got up at a reasonable time, watched a bit of TV. I really had a laid back day. I even read the newspaper.

In the afternoon I had a little lunch and thought about going out to buy stuff for dinner, but decided not to go. I really just stayed home.

When F came home he had a shower and then a little nap. I interrupted his nap to ask if he’d like to go for dinner. We went to Aki and had a couple of okonomiyaki and some gyoza. Yum. Tonight I asked for (and got!) udon noodles in my okonomiyaki. F doesn’t like them as much, so he never orders them for me, but tonight I mentioned that I liked them. I don’t think he was too happy, but he’s not too fussy about eating food*. (*That’s what he says, but it is so not true.)

We went to the grocery store and I got a few things for dinner tomorrow night. As usual, he didn’t help me decide what to have at all. I get really frustrated. He won’t let me go by myself, yet, he has no suggestions whatsoever. I feel like serving him mud on a plate, but he’d probably enjoy it! I picked out chicken and salad and I thought he might like to choose the vegetable, but he wouldn’t. So annoying.

We came home again and I watched Sherlock. I’d missed half an hour of it, but it was still good. Ended on a cliffhanger, so I hope that I get to see the next part.

F found out that one of his postcards arrived today, so he got to write up another one. He did this one by himself too, so that was good. I keep suggesting that he write happy things on the post card, but he gets a little serious at times. Still, it’s okay. It’s HIS card, not mine!

At 11 tonight I watched Grey’s Anatomy. It was a good and quite well done episode, about a TV follow up to the big shooting in the hospital. I actually thought tonight that the show is getting a little better. Possibly. F went to bed on it.

And that’s about it. Even though I have no plans for tomorrow I’d like to get to bed a little early if I can, so I might just go to bed as soon as I’ve posted everything. That’s it for me. Night.

August 23, 2011

Tuesday - Rainy with some clear times

An okay day today. I got up this morning and showered, made the bed and did my computer things in the morning. I even had some yogurt for breakfast too.

I re-watched The Invention of Lying. I liked it, but I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. Ricky Gervais has a very wry sense of humour. It suits me just fine, but it is not for everyone. I cooked lunch for myself. Seems like the first time in ages. I had a cheese omelette, sausages and a couple of English Muffins. Yum.

I headed out on my bike to go to work. I didn’t wear a jacket and I didn’t wear my rain cape, although I did take it. I didn’t need it, but there was a little bit of rain along the way.

My student was a few minutes late, but we had a pretty good class. After class she left and I did some other work. I did my paperwork and read 3 newspapers. Wow! I was going to leave and go to the craft store on the way home. I even got my shoes on and was outside the school, when I realised it was raining quite heavily. I didn’t want to bike home in the rain. I went back into the school and did a couple more chores that I had been putting off. After that, I sent F a C-mail to see if he was home or working. He called me back soon after and then came to get me.

We had a cheap and cheerful dinner at Coco Ichibanya, the curry place. I had chicken and summer vegetables with cheese, F had the special shrimp curry that’s on now. Mine was good, he said his was too.

After dinner we came home. I really wanted to watch Sherlock tonight since I’d missed it last night. I did watch and thought it was a neat idea with good actors. I’ll try and watch it again tomorrow night. Try!

Took a break from TV for a bit and then F put it on. He does this thing where he turns it on and watches it just for background noise. I do it during the day sometimes, but only when I’m alone.

We watched Undercover Boss again tonight. It was about the boss from White Castle. I don’t know if we have them in Canada. It was interesting. I did think about what would happen on the show if he caught someone doing something really really bad…would they show it? If it was damaging for the company, I bet they wouldn’t or the TV producers wouldn’t get more execs for their show.

I did a row and a half of crochet tonight. It felt like a long time without a hook in my hand. Nice to have it back. I’ve almost made up the bit I had to frog.

And that was my day. F watched some kickboxing stuff, but he almost deserved it! He’s having a bad time with the weather and his back.

Tomorrow, no plans, except I do have to start work on my next movie column. I think I have a topic…fingers crossed.

Got to go! Night.

August 22, 2011

Monday - Hot and sunny, cloudy in the morning, rain at night

A good day.

I got up this morning at my first alarm and stayed up. Well, I think it was my first alarm…! I checked email, made the bed and got ready to go out. I even found time for a quick bite before I left the apartment.

I went to the local theatre and saw Transformers: Dark of the Moon. It was better than number two, but I still wouldn’t drag a friend to it. I just wanted to get out of the house and as I saw the early show it was a little cheaper. I had some popcorn and a drink as I got there just as the film was going to start.

Afterwards, I left the theatre and biked up the hill towards the centre of town. I stopped at the bank to update my passbook and then went to S-Mall. I had a sandwich and an iced tea at Doutors while I read my AFWJ Journal. I was getting ready to leave when a lady came over to talk to me. She was one of my students back in L’Eikaiwa days. I remembered her after we’d chatted for a while. She wanted pointers on how to teach her child English. I probably should have said, “Send her to my school”, but I didn’t!

I didn’t go to the hundred yen shop today, I didn’t even go upstairs. I got a few things at the grocery store for work and then came home.

At home I found another Postcrossing card to me. That was a nice surprise, especially since I’ve received more than I’ve sent. This one came from the US and had a picture of Old Faithful on it.

I did quite a bit of housework today. I cleaned the toilet before I went out. I thought I’d not come home if I didn’t do it before I left! After I came home, I watched some taped TV and then vacuumed the apartment. Hadn’t been done for a while and really needed it.

F came home a little late, not much though. He didn’t ask about my day at all, so he has no idea that I went out to the mall or anything else. He doesn’t read this very often, so don’t anyone tell him, okay?

We cooked dinner later. We had bought cold asparagus soup, salad, gyoza (F cooked, from frozen) and Worchester-sauced pork. It was quite nice, except F needed rice with it.

He did the dishes, and we had a quiet night. He did a bit more translation for me. I needed a holiday letter to give to my students. Hurray for him.

I watched Medium tonight and it was okay. It was part one of a story, so will have to watch it tomorrow night. There was a lot about Joe on it, so I was happy.

I spent a long time making my movie reviews so far this year ready for publishing and then published them. They are listed below if you are interested. I’ve seen 20 films at the theatre so far this year. Not bad for this country. (Yes, some are repeats.)

Anyway, that’s it for me. I’m out of here. Night!

August 21, 2011

Sunday - Cloudy and cooler

A mostly good day.

We both slept in quite late this morning. I was very surprised that F was still in bed when I made a quick trip to the toilet this morning. I did set my alarm for 11, but didn’t get up. It was a bit later than that when I did.

F and I had a snuggle this morning and then went out for lunch. We went to Patio, a little cafe in the mall. I was going to order chicken, but they didn’t have any left. I wanted to tell them to go down to the grocery shop on the first floor and get some, but I didn’t. (This is one reason why I shouldn’t learn Japanese…I’d be able to say these things to people and I would!) I had pasta instead. I didn’t really want it as I wanted less carbs, but it couldn’t be helped.

After lunch we did a little shopping. F got himself a pair of fake Crocs in the mall and then we drove out to a shoe store and looked around. I looked at a lot of shoes and even tried on some, but I didn’t love any of them enough to buy them. I was hoping to get a new pair of runners or something to wear on holiday next month. Denied. F did find a pair that he liked so he bought them. I hope they work for him. He’s having a lot of foot problems at the moment.

We visited the nearby drugstore and got a few things. We hardly ever go there. The place is huge and about half of it now is a grocery store. They do sell a lot of shampoos and toiletries that are hard to find other places.

After this, we were both thirsty and despite getting drinks in the drugstore, decided to go for drinks somewhere. F thought he knew a place near the city’s library so we drove around looking for it. I’m not exactly sure why, but after 15 minutes of him tearing down narrow roads and then stopping suddenly and switching directions, I started to feel sick. He finally found the place, but I told him I didn’t want to go anymore. He drove around a bit more and then asked where I wanted to go. I told him to take me home. I honestly thought I was going to lose my lunch. We came home and I went into the bedroom, shut the door and had a nice long lie-down. I don’t think I fell asleep, I just needed the total quiet and stillness that I got.

I reappeared in the world a bit later and dinner was discussed and then forgotten. And then discussed. And then put off again. Finally, I was ready to go, but F wasn’t. He’d okayed a download for his computer and it was taking forever to go through. I think we had to wait about 20 minutes for it to finish everything.

We ended up at Grado where we had a decent meal. I had grilled chicken (finally) with cold consomme, appetisers, salad, tea and gelato. It was nice. F had ginger pork. He liked it but said it was salty.

We bought a few groceries and then came home. The rest of the night has been really quiet and mostly peaceful. F cooked some edamame and is doing another Postcrossing, without much interference from me. I’m blogging and surfing the web when I can.

That’s it really. An okay day. It was nice in that it was quiet, but I don’t really like getting sick when we drive around. F blames his car, I tend to blame the driver! Got to go. Night!

August 20, 2011

Saturday - Hot and sunny

A good day.

I got up today a little late. I went to bed late, but I did have an early class today, so it wasn’t a good thing. I slept very well though, which was great.

I got up, showered and then did my usual computer stuff. I took a mini nap before F and I left the apartment.

We had breakfast at Jiro today. It was nice. We had Mench cuts and bacon, basically minced meat formed into patties and breaded with some bacon on the side. It was a nice meal and it was good not to go to the usual place again!

My class went well. My second student cancelled today which was sad, but then cancelled all her classes this month, which was even sadder. She rescheduled for next month.

I finished up and called F. He picked me up and we drove out to the mall. We checked on the time of the movie and then had dinner. I didn’t want yakiniku as we’d just had it, and the usual place in the mall we go isn’t very good. We tried the omurice place and it was okay. Better than okay to be honest! F had okonomiyaki rice and I had omurice with cream stew, vegetables and grilled chicken. It was nice. The rice I chose had butter in it rather than ketchup, so I was quite happy.

After the meal, we went upstairs and got our tickets for the film. We got popcorn and drinks and went to see Shanghai. It’s the first new English film that the theatre has shown in a month, barring Transformers 3. I’m not in a hurry to see that one. Shanghai was quite good. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. John Cusack is a spy in Shanghai trying to find out who killed his friend. He falls for a shady lady, played by Gong Li. She’s married to the local gangster who is in an uneasy partnership with the Japanese. It does make sense in the world of the film. Interesting to see a story that talks about a part of the world that I don’t know much about, and a time as well.

After the movie we drove back to Tsuruoka, had a milkshake and doughnut at Mr Donut and then came home. It was a nice evening.

We watched Top Gear and then at 2:15 I watched Not Going Out. It was a funny one again. F only seems to stay up and watch the not so funny ones.

And that was my day. I haven’t got much of a plan for tomorrow. I do want to get F to get himself a couple of pairs of shoes for work if he can. He’s been complaining about his shoes being smelly, but wears the same ones every day. Wonder why they aren’t so fresh? Night.

August 19, 2011

Friday - Hot and sunny

I couldn’t sleep at all last night when I went to bed. I lay there in bed for two hours, tossing and turning and no sleep. I got up around 6 and went over to my computer for a few minutes, then tried going back to sleep. I finally fell asleep. In fact, I overslept. Yikes. I was meeting someone at 12:30 and I was still in bed 2 hours before that.

I got up, had a quick shower and then did my computer stuff very quickly. I got dressed with a few minutes to spare and headed off on my bike. I managed to catch the postal worker just as he was emptying the mailbox along my way, so I gave him my postcard and off I went. I made it, and was even early!

I met Nikki on my way into the washroom, she was on her way out! I needed to comb my hair and then we met properly. She’s a member of my women’s group for foreign ladies married to Japanese men, AFWJ. She lives in the next city, has been around for a while, but I’ve never met her before.

We had a nice lunch in Monami, the Daiichi Hotel’s restaurant and then an after lunch drink in Doutors. On our way to Doutors my cellphone’s earthquake alarm went off, so we were a little nervous, but we couldn’t see too many effects of the quake. It was a 3 here, which after everything else is quite mild. Nikki and I had a huge gab session and it was a lot of fun. We broke up our party around 4 I think. She headed home, and I headed back into the mall to do a little shopping. I got more postcards and also tried to find something for dinner. I didn’t manage.

I biked home and went over to my computer to try and make up some of my lost time. F came home less than an hour later and we went out. First we went back to S-Mall to take in my glasses. They broke last night and I’m hoping they can be repaired. I have a newer pair, but I don’t really like them that much. It might cost about 6000 yen, but I’m having them fixed.

We hit up our usual grocery store afterwards for some veggies and then came home for dinner. It was yakiniku and should be quite simple. Except it wasn’t. F vanished into the bedroom, couldn’t even help get the hotplate out, so I was a tad annoyed. However, I decided to just keep quiet. I got everything done up to the point of cooking the meat and then took a break. When the silence was understood, I had a companion for dinner again!

The meat was nice and so were the veggies. I think we had equal amounts of meat and veggies…but there were leftover veggies at the end. F did the dishes and then we had a quiet evening, except for the J-TV that F subjected me to. He did up another Postcrossing card and I had to help him a bit with that. I also had my own work to do though, so it was a bit hard. I’m also really really tired, so I hope everything went well.

Anyway, that was my day. It was pretty great. I could have done with more sleep, but all in all, a nice one. And now…to bed! Night.

Thursday - Thunder, lightning, torrential rain, clearing finally

Last night I was still on my computer before going to bed when a huge thunderstorm started. It scared me! It was loud and sounded like it was immediately overhead. I shut down my computer and went to bed right away. The thunder had woken F up and it was a while before things calmed down enough outside for us to go to sleep inside.

Unfortunately, this morning also began with a big bang. The rain was fierce and so was the thunder. F laughed at me because I wouldn’t take a shower while the storm was going on. I looked up on the computer to see if I was being dense, but there was quite a bit on line saying that I wasn’t. Of course, it probably wasn’t the smartest thing in the world to use my computer during a rainstorm, but at least if I was hit by lightning, I wouldn’t be naked!

F did a lot of running around today while I was at home, and I took a nap and woke up to an empty apartment. He wanted his lunch early, but I didn’t. I wouldn’t be able to eat again until late, so I wanted to wait a bit. We compromised. I gave him a snack, we went out for a late lunch.

I was dropped off at my school around 5 and I changed into my work clothes. I did a few things around the school and then when my student came, we had a chat about some upcoming changes and got on with the lesson.

After class I did filing and other paperwork, then cleaned up the classroom a bit. One bad thing did happen after my class, my glasses broke. The arm on one side just gave way today. It had been bending for a while. I’ll see if I can get it repaired. I called F to come and get me. He did and we went to Moku-Moku for dinner.

Moku-Moku was okay. It wasn’t very busy today. We had the same thing to eat, the curry plate. It was curry and rice with fried chicken, a sausage and some fries. Quite nice really.

After dinner we went over to the MaxValu to pick up some groceries. I wanted something easy to cook tomorrow so we settled on yakiniku. I’d like to pick up a few more vegetables tomorrow if I can.

We came home and I watched Royal Pains. It was quite cute, and a little timely for us as a character in the episode was hit by lightning. I really do not want that to happen to me. While I was watching it I did some of my crochet and discovered a terrible thing. I’d made a huge mistake in my crochet two rows back, so I had to frog it all. It wasn’t the kind of thing that I could fudge, I’d left out an entire row of the pattern. Yikes! I must have either been upset or really into the show I was watching at the time.

And that’s about it. When my show finished, F found some dreck on TV and watched it. Bleck. He’s gone to bed and is sleeping away. I’m still up for a bit, I requested a Postcrossing address, so my next card is off to the Netherlands. I think I might write the card tonight as I’ll be a tad busy in the morning.

Tomorrow I’m having lunch with another AFWJ member, if all goes well, and then there’s the big yakiniku dinner hubs and I will have. Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow. Talk to you soon. Night.

Thursday - Hot and sunny, with big rain showers

An okay day. I got up this morning, grabbed the fan and headed back to the bedroom. I wanted to snooze a little longer with the fan on. I heard a vehicle outside and thought, I bet that’s F. It was. He popped in to visit and bring some stamps that he brought me. Someone at work had bought Hello Kitty stamps and as a government office they can’t use them. We can, so F bought them. Hurray for us.

He stayed a few minutes and then left. I didn’t feel like sleeping any more so I got up. I watched a bit of TV, did some laundry and in the afternoon I steamed a couple of chicken breasts for dinner. When F called to say he was coming home, I was in the midst of preparing for dinner. Hurray for me.

We vegged for a bit when he came home and then I put dinner on the table. It was fairly simple, just chicken salad sandwiches made with French bread, salad on the side. They were quite good. Today I’d got a bit fancy with the chicken salad and put in half an onion which added quite a zing to the whole thing. The cucumber I’d put in added crunch. It was nice and most of the salad disappeared.

I did the dishes while F worked on my translation tonight. He finally finished it while I took a quickie nap. I was sitting at the computer almost asleep so I decided to go to bed and nap for 20 minutes.

We ran over to my school to pick something up for F’s work and then came back home via McDonald for ice cream. It was that kind of night really. At home we watched Grey’s Anatomy and ate our ice cream.

That’s about it. F went to bed a while ago. He’s taking tomorrow off work to do some personal business, and then I’m guessing he’ll drive me crazy and hopefully to work. Wish me luck having him at home all day. I might need it.

Night!

Tuesday - Rainy, then warm and sunny

An interesting day.

I was convinced that I had two classes today. One of them was an early class and the other a little later in the afternoon. I got up early, showered and even put my bag together for taking over to the school.

After doing my computer stuff, I took a mini-nap. I couldn’t keep my eyes open and I wanted to sleep. I set my timer for 15 minutes. I was almost asleep when my phone rang. It was my later afternoon student phoning to cancel. Okay. I still had the other lesson to teach. I looked at the schedule book so I could update it for F and realised that my early class wasn’t today…it’s next week. Yay? I didn’t have to go to the school after all.

I had lunch anyway and then watched some CSI and read the newspapers for the last couple of days. Depressing stuff most of it.

F came home tonight a bit grumpy. He was surprised to see me as I’m usually at work on Tuesday nights. We talked after a bit and cleared the air.

We went out for dinner to Kappa Sushi. It was fun, but quite busy. I like the varieties of stuff they have, although it’s not always as good as our other place. We went to McDonalds after for a little something, I had iced tea, F had an ice cream cone. Then we bought a few groceries and came home.

At home, F finally got down to doing the translation for me. I was getting a bit desperate. I really wanted to send the letter to the student in advance of her class, but that won’t be possible now. Sigh. At 1:00 am I suggested that he stop for the night. I know that it is complicated, that’s why I wanted him to start it yesterday. Ack.

While hubby was working hard, I watched Undercover Boss. Tonight it was the head of 7-11 so it was interesting seeing him doing the jobs that his front-line staff do. He wasn’t always good at them. I wore headphones tonight so I wouldn’t disturb the mister…didn’t ask him this time either!

That’s about it really. F finally took his shower and has gone to bed. He’s not doing well these days. He’s having foot and leg problems and I think that as much as anything is making him a tad more grumpy than usual. Not that HE thinks he’s grumpy, you understand, I do.

Oh, before I go, I have a ‘date’ on Friday. There’s a new member in my women’s group who lives in the next town over. We’re going to get together and have lunch on Friday. Yay! AND, a new movie in English will start at Mikawa this weekend and it even has John Cusack in it. Hurray for that!

Gotta go. Night.

Monday - Hot and sunny. Yawn.

Was a good day until my husband decided to be a twat, so now not so good.

I got up this morning, grabbed the fan, turned it on the bed and went back to sleep. Wonderful. I got up later.

I had a fairly busy day at home. I did some prep for dinner. We had garlic-shoyu pork, so I made the marinade and then put it on the pork. The apartment fairly reeked of garlic afterwards. Happily I’m not a vampire and like garlic!

After I’d done that I made a quick run to the post office to send off my postcards and a book that was mooched last week. The guy at the post office actually volunteered a nice stamp for my postcard today! Wow. I was happy.

I came home again and cut up the milk cartons that have been littering the kitchen. F does occasionally do it, but he’s much messier at it than I am!

When he came home I was watching a documentary about Gareth, the English choir master who goes to places to get people singing. I enjoyed it, but may not be able to see any of the other parts. F raced out again to get his now fixed cellphone. They’ve put it in a new case and it’s all shiny again, just like it was when he first got it. I wonder how long it’ll be until he breaks it again!

When he came back, I started getting dinner into high production. I had the broccoli ready to microwave, the meat ready for the pan, the table set and as soon as I started sauteing the meat…F goes to lie down in the bedroom. I tried not to be annoyed as I know he’s not doing well at the moment. I finished cooking and to be fair, he came out and ate with me. And did the dishes too. Yay.

After dinner I needed a quick run to the drugstore again and then we made a brief stop at the grocery store.

We came home and he proceeded to watch some awful fighting show again. Egads. That stuff is so obnoxious, I have no idea why he likes watching it.

Just before 11, I started prepping for my show, made a toilet run, and then came back to the living room. The TV was off. Nice! I turned it back on and asked him if I should wear headphones. I know he watches the show sometimes with me, but he was also going to do some work and I know it’s confusing for him. I asked him if he was mad at me at this point as he looked very annoyed. He wasn’t before, but for some reason, whenever I ask him this question, he gets mad. He grabs the papers I wanted him to translate and took them through to the bedroom. Shuts the door. Five minutes later he storms out, grabs his car keys and leaves.

Okay?!

I watched Medium, which was a cute one, about Joe and Allison’s wedding. Only thing was, they used that weird computer program to make them both look younger and it made them look a bit creepy instead.

He came home and when I asked where he’d been, he’d gone back to the grocery store to try and find something to help his foot cool down. He didn’t say much else, just back to the bedroom with door shut. And there he stays.

Anyway, I have an early class tomorrow so I should get a move on. Hopefully he’ll get over himself tomorrow and be back to his usual cheerful self. Hopefully. Night!

Sunday - Hot, sunny and quite humid

Well, it was daylight when the mister and I put ourselves to bed this morning, so as you can imagine, I slept quite late. F got up a bit before 9 he said. Silly man! Sleeping is much more fun.

Anyway, I finally dragged myself out of bed around noon. When I did, F decided to ask for another postcard from Postcrossing, so he wrote it up and I photographed it for him. It was after 2 when we went out and after we left the apartment I started to feel a bit sick. The food that he suggested really did nothing for me, so finally I suggested one of the soba restaurants that he doesn’t like a lot. He agreed and so we went to Nambayashkiri.

My stomach had decided not to have any fried food, so that left out all the tempura and the French fries that F tried to get me to order, so I ended up just having salad soba. It was perfect. Not greasy, just a bit of noodles with chicken, lettuce and a little bit of sesame. We also had some sausages which were nice too. F had the tempura on rice with soba on the side. It looked okay, but I’m honestly glad I skipped it.

We drove around this afternoon looking for postcards for F. Now that he’s into Postcrossing, he needs a selection of postcards that he can send. We went to a few places in the city, but Tsuruoka just isn’t that touristy of a place. There aren’t too many postcards of things in Tsuruoka. We did a lot of driving around, and did manage to pick him up a few. We also got some cute and charming ones at a souvenir shop and the hundred yen shop. We had a drink at Doutors while we were in the mall. Yay!

After a quick trip home to decide about dinner, we headed out. All the places F thought of for dinner were either full or closed! He’d even called one of the places before we headed out to see if there was parking. We got there, and the restaurant was full. I asked him if he’d made a reservation. He said he had, but he hadn’t left his name! That’s not a reservation!

We ended up (after a lot of driving around) at Simon, a French/Japanese restaurant for a lovely meal. I had fish and F had a glorified hamburger. It really was nice though.

After dinner we made a quick trip through the drugstore and then the grocery shop. F wasn’t feeling that well by this time, so it was rather important to get home fairly soon.

We had a quiet evening in. F did up another card with a lot less help from me, so I’ll go and mail them tomorrow. I did up a couple for myself too. I’m sending them to the US and to Russia. The Russian one will probably take ages. They usually take longer than two weeks to arrive.

And that was my day. It was actually quite great, except for the not feeling well parts. Hopefully we’ll both be feeling better by tomorrow too. Night!

Saturday - Cloudy, sunny and hot

A good day!

I got up this morning and then showered. F had gone out and then came home. His doctor’s office was closed. F napped while I watched Medium. We went out at 11 and had brunch at Gusto.

I went to my school and got ready for my class. The student was right on time and we had a good lesson. It was fun too.

After class, I finished up, cleaned up and called my husband. He was sleeping and was really groggy. He came to pick me up after a while and we went off to Mikawa Mall. I picked up my clothes from the menders. F went and picked up a few postcards for himself. He’s decided to join Postcrossing too!

We had a couple of drinks at Seattle’s Best and then we drove back to Tsuruoka. We went to a couple of places, including Book Off. F wanted to look at books. I toured the store, and had a good look through the non-book part. I found the kimono section and snooped there for a bit. Some were gorgeous. They were expensive, but beautiful. There were even lovely obi too. I would just wonder about the smell of the place, if it would ever come out of the material.

We cmae home for a bit and thought about dinner. F finally suggested going to Edoichi, and that’s where we went. We had a pretty good meal there. It was really busy at first, but afterwards it was much nicer to be there.

We came home and I helped F customise his Postcrossing account and then write his first postcard too. It took a long time, but he did a good job and he’s quite justifiably proud of himself.
After midnight we watched Top Gear then Heroes, after that Not Going Out and now we’re watching Two Weeks Notice. It wasn’t a good film when it came out, but at 4 in the morning it’s not bad!

Anyway, that was my day. It was pretty good. Hopefully tomorrow will be good too. Come back and find out. Night!
