Monday - Cool but sunny. Academy Awards day!
An okay day.
I woke up early, before my alarm and decided to get up and stay up so I wouldn’t miss any of the Academy Awards. I got myself ensconced in my chair in front of the computer and I proceeded to Facebook the Academy Awards Ceremony. It turned out that a friend in Canada was also watching so we had a little conversation going on during the Oscars which made it a lot of fun for both of us!
I enjoyed the show, I may have been the only person who did, as James Franco has generally been lambasted for his part, but I thought it was cool. I have to admit that when Colin Firth won for Best Actor I let out a cheer. I hope my neighbours didn’t hear! I’ve been a huge fan of Colin Firth’s for years and seeing this hard working actor get some recognition was great.
Basically, for the first few hours of the day I didn’t do anything at all. I was glued to my TV! After the broadcast finished I took a shower and got down to other things.
F was late tonight and didn’t come home until 8 pm. I was supposed to go out and get some ingredients for dinner, but I decided not to. Sadly, he wasn’t feeling that well and we had a bit of a spat before going out to eat.
We had a quick dinner at Gusto then came home and watched a bit of the re-broadcast of the Academy Awards. F hadn’t seen them. I restarted my movie column and totally changed the topic so I had a lot of work to do. I still have a bit left. Sigh. I tried quite hard to get it done tonight, but I wanted to blog a bit.
That was my day. It was okay and worshipping at the Temple of Oscar was fun today. Night!

Sunday - Sunny and windy.
A nice weekend. We left Tsuruoka yesterday and made good time getting to Sendai. We went to the Natori mall first to see if we could go and see The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. We were able to see it in English, and in 3-D so that was kind of neat. We both enjoyed the movie.
We drove to our hotel next, checked in, and after a bit of relaxation time, went shopping. We did a tour of Maruzen for books, Tower Records for a dvd, Jupiter for some foreign food and then to a nice Indian restaurant for dinner. However, we timed it a little wrong and the Indian restaurant had already closed for the night. NO! I’d been looking forward to some yummy curry for the whole trip.
Instead F and I had a bit of an argument about where to go so we ended up at an Outlet izakaya. Now, I’m not sure about you, but I’m a little suspicious of a restaurant that labels itself an “Outlet”. All the dishes were 290 yen each, and were about as good as you’d expect for that price. I wasn’t too pleased really. Sendai has some really good food places and we had to go to a craptastic one.
We went back to the hotel, watched a bit of TV (in English, I kept the remote!) and then went to sleep.
This morning, F got up early and went for a walk. It’s a weird thing he does sometimes. Still, it was fine as he’s so noisy in the room that him leaving for a while makes it better for my beauty sleep!
We had breakfast later, then checked out and headed over to Nagamachi mall. We parked and discovered that The King’s Speech was playing in a little bit. Yay. I’d seen it, but I wanted F to see it too. We hacked around the mall and I did a little shopping. I got some new tea, a few things at the Muji store and we had some tea at Starbucks.
The movie was great and I think F liked it. It’s hard to tell with him. I thought he was sleeping at first, but he swears not.
After the movie, F suggested going back downtown to have something at another of our restaurants. I was okay with that, but suggested we take the car out of the parking area, and then go back in. The mall only gives 5 hours of free parking, and we were coming up for 4 hours. No way we could get downtown by train and back in the remaining time with a meal in there too. He seemed to misunderstand and so we left the mall and he drove downtown. Huh? Halfway there, he turned back to the mall and we ate a place near the mall. It was okay, but not very exciting. I had been trying to explain to him that there were a bunch of cool places along the road leading to the highway. We could have tried any of them. He didn’t understand what I meant.
After dinner we left the city and got on the highway. I dozed a little but mostly stayed awake. We stopped for supplies at Sagae and F told me that there was an avalanche on our way. He heard an announcement at the rest stop about it. He said we’d take the free road and not the paid highway to avoid it. We get along the road, exit at the right place, and are told that we can’t go that way as the avalance blocked the free road too. Sigh. We had to back track to Sagae again, and then some, before going a much slower way home.
We had a quick dinner at Marumatsu and then bought a few groceries. We came home and vegged for a while before F went to bed.
It was quite a nice weekend really. Apart from a bit of frustration over food, it was a nice time.
Got to go! Night.

Friday - Rainy then a little snowy and cold.
An okay day. I woke up, got up to watch the news and then turned over and ended up watching Elmer Gantry, which is a movie that I hadn’t seen before. It was very good, and seemed topical in this era of scandal. Burt Lancaster was in it and was amazing as usual. It was interesting to see Shirley Jones in the film as a young prostitute. She later played the mum on The Partridge Family, so quite a turn of career.
I made the bed and discovered that F had gone to work without his cell phone. Sigh. Too bad. The silly man.
I watched some TV on tape and then F came home. We went out to the doctor’s office. I had an x-ray of my foot taken but apparently there’s nothing to be seen on the x-ray. I think that they were looking in the wrong place personally, but I’m not a doctor. He thinks I’ve torn a ligament, and gave me some plasters that make my foot too cold.
Anyway, after that F and I had a late lunch and then came home for a bit. F proceeded to watch the most godawful Japanese TV possible for all the time we were at home. I could feel the IQ points leaving my brain. They were just packing their bags and catching the last train to the coast.
We had dinner in Cocos which was okay and then came home via the grocery store. F got himself a bunch of junk food.
The rest of the evening was mostly filled with bad Japanese TV. We caught the last few minutes of Prince Caspian, but then it was back to the BJTV. Urgh. I watched Numbers after 1, but by then my brain was mush!
Tomorrow night if all goes well, and we don’t have too much snow we’ll be in Sendai so there won’t be an update. Don’t miss me too much please. Night!
Long time readers will know that today has a sad meaning for me, but this year I think I’ll just keep things low key. I haven’t forgotten, I don’t think I could.

Thursday - Raining now, but sunny and warm in the daytime.
A good day. I got up this morning a little late, but no matter. I watched Three Coins in the Fountain, which was a sweet old movie about three secretaries in Rome. I had seen it before, but definitely worth watching again. I am enjoying the old movies on TV in the morning.
I had a quiet day at home until I left for work. I got there in lots of time. Most of the snow around my school has melted, with the exception of the big pile in the road. The path through the pile needed a bit of smoothing, so I did that and then got started on my school day.
Today I did such lovely jobs as cleaning the toilet and sweeping the floor before my first class.
My first class went well and today the student didn’t get 100 per cent on the dictation test, but he only made one mistake, so I was really pleased. I read newspapers in the break between classes, plus did a bit of paperwork.
After my second class, I did the dishes and called my husband. He came and we went to Coco Curry House. It was quite nice and then we just came home. I didn’t want to miss ER seeing as how they are so close to the end now. Tonight they wrapped up Neela’s storyline. It was sad, but perfect too. They showed flashbacks from when she first came to County, a little of her relationship with Gallant and some of the other doctors.
After midnight F did his “I’m not watching anything but don’t you dare touch the TV” bit (not really!) until I asked if I could watch something. I put on His Royal Purpleness’s movie, Purple Rain and rewatched it. I don’t know, it seemed to make a lot more sense when I was younger!
Anyway, we’ve decided to go to Sendai this weekend. I don’t have classes on Saturday which doesn’t happen often, so we’ll go and trip the light fantastic there! Tomorrow, F is planning to take half a day off work and I think he’ll take me to his doctor. I hurt my foot a few weeks ago and I’m wondering if there’s anything that can be done. Wish me luck!
Talk to you tomorrow night, most likely. Night!

Wednesday - Warm and sunny
An odd day!
Last night I stayed up very late watching a movie and I just didn’t feel like blogging when I should have. I’m up equally late tonight, but I do feel like blogging, so here goes!
I got up this morning and discovered that F had left his thermos behind. The last couple of weeks he has been taking a flask of coffee into work. He doesn’t have to buy drinks from a vending machine and hey, a flask is reusable, right? I drank some of the left over coffee and enjoyed it.
After the news was on today I channel surfed and found a Golden Oldie. Today it was A Letter to Three Wives with a very young Kirk Douglas, plus Ann Sothern, Linda Darnell and Jeanne Crain. I’d seen it years ago, and also a remake of it, but it was definitely worth watching again. Basically three wives get a letter from their group’s fourth member saying that she’s run off with one of their husbands. The women spend the rest of the day looking back on their marriages until they discover what happened. It’s rather an interesting film with good performances.
I did quite a bit of TV watching and didn’t go out at all during the day.
F came home around 6:30 tonight and after he changed we went out for dinner. Now, we were supposed to grab a quick bite, but we ended up bickering about where to eat. I finally agreed to F’s choice, even though I hated it, but when we got there, it was closed. Darn! He chose to drive off in search of another horrid restaurant halfway across the city. It was closed too. Meanwhile, he pulled into a restaurant parking lot to turn around and started wondering about it.
We went in and were quite surprised. It was a Japanese restaurant, very spiffy, with only a set dinner menu. F decided to go for it (it did sound good) and we had a great meal. We had fish done all kinds of ways and I liked it! I do like fish, I just don’t always like the same kind of fish that my husband does.
After the meal we left and went straight for my school. Of course by the time we got there it was after 9 pm. Sigh. F worked on my taxes for a while and I did some reading. After a while, F gave up. I don’t think he was feeling well, because he certainly started acting strangely.
When we got home he went to bed. He did have a bath, but he was in pain and not feeling well. I watched some TV and then started this.
Tomorrow I’m back to work, but not as early as on Tuesday. I’m glad about that. Talk to you tomorrow night? Bye!

Tuesday - Clear and sunny
I’m writing this the next morning! I stayed up last night watching a movie and I was engrossed in it. It was Coming Home with Jane Fonda and Jon Voight. It was a really good film, and it was the first time I’ve seen it all the way through. I’d seen parts of it before, but never the whole thing.
Most of yesterday was fine. I got up on time, but was terribly tired most of the morning. I really wanted to go back to bed, but I never did. I had lunch and left for work in good time. I really didn't want to leave though, Casablanca was on. As always I was reminded what a fabulous movie it is.
My class went well and after my student left I got busy reading newspapers and planning classes. My second class of the day also went well and my student brought me a loaf of homemade bread. (It was yummy!)
After class I finished up and called my husband to come and get me. He did and we went for dinner to New York, New York. We had the same main dish and then different sides.
We came home after our meal and spent a quiet evening at home. We watched American Idol which was quite a lot of fun.
After F went to bed, I watched Coming Home and then I went bed without blogging. I looked at the clock and it was 3 am and I just decided to sleep instead of writing. I think it was a good choice.
That was my Tuesday. Later!

Monday - Clear and sunny
A good day.
I got up this morning and had a quiet morning around the apartment. I watched my weekend’s TV which was part good and part meh!
In the afternoon I got myself ready to go out and I made the trip to City Hall. I picked up my Alien Registration card. That was quite easy. Then, I hopped back on my bike and rode all the way to S-Mall. I rode most of the way, had to walk in a few places.
I hacked around the mall a bit, looked at DVDs, didn’t buy any, went to the hundred yen shop, did buy a few things there, and then had a quick go-round of the grocery store. I got myself some herbal tea that was being cleared and then headed over to the coffee shop. I had a tuna and cheddar sandwich and a cup of Royal Milk Tea. Yum.
I headed home after a little while. It was fairly easy riding, although there were a few places that I walked. The roads were so narrow that one car passed me so close that I think I could have reached out and touched it. It scared me.
F was home fairly early tonight, so we made a quick trip to my school to set the heater up, and then came home and cooked dinner. Tonight we had fresh pasta with 4 cheese sauce. I’ve never cooked fresh pasta before and I really liked it. It was quite different than the usual dry pasta I’ve made. It seemed lighter somehow. We had salad on the side with a vegetable F found at the grocery store last night. It’s from South Africa and is supposed to have a lot of water in it. It did have a very interesting texture. I also sliced some cold ham that I got a while ago so we’d have some real protein.
After that we had a quiet evening. Around 9 I was falling asleep at my computer, so I got up, put on my pyjamas and took a nap. F was watching boxing so I had no interest at all in the TV. I woke up feeling much better.
We watched Hell’s Kitchen at 11 and then F went off to bed. I’m still up, but will go soon as I’m tired again. Hurray for that!
Tomorrow I’m back to work. Should be okay, especially if the weather holds. Got to go. Night!

Sunday - Clear but cool
A difficult day.
I went to bed late last night and also slept in late today. I thought I deserved it! F was up and around this morning long before me, even calling to reschedule his car’s appointment. I really don’t understand why he would book it for the one day off we get together. In the morning of that day, sure, but in the afternoon? Why? He changed it to a Saturday. It’s sort of okay!
We had lunch in the Grand El Son today. That was the wedding hall we got married in and they have just finished doing a renovation. It looks quite nice in places. F and I were reminiscing about our wedding all those years ago. (Actually, it’ll be 10 this year!) I was remembering with less than happiness our wedding day. Picture if you will a short stout lady (ME) trying to follow a tall athletic Japanese guy (F) down a winding staircase. In normal circumstances I might be just able to keep up, but on our wedding day, I had on a long white dress, borrowed high heels (which I never, ever wear normally) and had a heavy bouquet in one hand and was trying to hold my dress up with the other. AHHHHHHH. The very definition of not fun. F did have the decency to look a little sheepish.
We bought some kerosene for our apartment, then F dropped me and it off and went to get some for his mother. When he came back home, he wanted to leave for the mall right away, but he couldn’t answer me when I asked what we’d do at the mall once we got there. Our movie wasn’t for two hours.
We decided to do a little shopping in Tsuruoka before heading over to the mall. We went to the drugstore and then a craft store. I didn’t buy anything there.
We went to the mall finally and I went to the craft store in the mall. I got some fray-stop and some elastic for a craft project I’m thinking of making.
We went to see Hereafter, which like most films that Clint Eastwood makes was really thoughtful. I enjoyed it a lot. I wasn’t sure how the story threads would tie together, but they did. It was also very interesting to have part of the film in French. Luckily for me, there were English subtitles on the French part, so I could understand! My schoolgirl French isn’t that great.
After the movie we bought a few groceries in the store there, then drove to Sakata and had sushi at Kappa Sushi. It was okay, not fabulous. I still enjoy eating there. I like sitting at a table rather than at a counter and I like the different kinds of sushi that they make. It isn’t as good as our local place, but the hours are better.
When we finished dinner we drove back to Tsuruoka on the highway. It’s nice driving on it, and it’s free, at least for a while. We bought a few more groceries, of the perishable type in town and then came home. We watched the last bit of Iron Man and then after midnight I watched Veronica Mars.
Anyway, today was okay, but the reason I said it was difficult was that I seemed to be annoying my husband all day. I don’t’ really think I was, just he was quite grumpy and definitely not in a mood to talk to me. I of course have no one else to talk to, so get a bit annoyed when he won’t talk to me. He also took everything I said to him in the wrong way, so I was doing damage control most of the day.
That’s it. I’m off to bed now. And about blooming time too! Night.
February 19, 2011
Saturday - Cold and slightly snowy in the morning.
Just a quick note to say that mostly the day was good. We were supposed to go to the mall and see a movie tonight, but F didn’t pick me up on time. He was being a dutiful son and taking his mother out shopping so he gets a pass for now!
We had dinner at the okonomiyaki restaurant near our apartment, then came home and vegged. Our heater has been working on and off, it’s now off, so I’m a little cold and want to get to bed where it’s warm !
Tonight I watched a lot of TV including Top Gear, Burn Notice and the new 90210. It was okay, but not really great.
Anyway, I’m out of here. Night!

Friday - Rainy then snowy.
Today was an okay day. I had hoped to go out today, but the weather didn’t co-operate and nothing I needed was so pressing that I had to go out.
I got up a few minutes late, watched news and got on with my day. I stayed in my PJs for rather a long time, but finally got dressed.
I did a bit of reorganising in my little corner of “stuff”. I managed to empty out a couple of bags of books. I’ll have to either list some of the books on Book Mooch, or find a place to put them. I tidied up a bit too. In the later part of the day, I fired up my shredder and shredded a bunch of things. That was fun!
I also got a mail delivery today. I got a t-shirt from Canada. Over the Christmas holiday in Canada I bought F a t-shirt in Mark’s Work Wearhouse. I just grabbed his size and a colour that I liked, I didn’t really look too closely at it. (My sister was also buying shirts in the same section, so I just assumed it would look similar to hers.) Fast forward to Japan and I notice that there is a large fade mark on the front . It had been in a shelf that faced the window. Perhaps it was there a long time. I emailed the company and they very nicely sent me a replacement via my sister. They’ve asked me to donate the marked t-shirt to a homeless shelter or a local worthy cause. I don’t think there’s a homeless shelter nearby, so I’m taking ideas of what to do with it. I got one idea via Facebook, but if you dear reader have another idea, please let me know.
F came home around 6:30 tonight. He seemed fine at first and then when I was talking to him, went off to bed in the middle of what I was saying. He went to sleep for hours. Originally we had planned to go out for dinner and then go to my school to do my taxes so I wasn’t too pleased with him.
Around 8:30 I woke him up and we went out for dinner. We went to a local place and had a nice meal, except I found a small piece of metal in mine. It turns out that it came from a washing brush. Hmm.
F drove me to my school so I could set the heater. At 10 pm, I wasn’t about to get out my financial records for him. We came home and watched a bit of TV. F went to bed fairly early and I’ll try to go soon, although this isn’t early!
Tomorrow I have a busy day, and I might just skip the update tomorrow night if I’m tired, so don’t miss me too much. Talk to you next time. Night.

Thursday - Clear and sunny, warmish.
A good day really. My early day at home was quiet, which is just how I like it.
As I got ready to leave for work, the doorbell rang and I didn’t answer it. Why? I wasn’t expecting anyone and I didn’t know the people who were at the door. F thinks that people at the door are a command performance, you have to answer the door, but I don’t. Almost never. If they had a package, I might have gone, but….
I rode my bike to work and was able to ride most of the way. The only bit I couldn’t ride was on the sidewalk. It’s still ankle deep in snow that’s a combo of slurpee and gel beads for vases.
I had one class tonight and it went well. I’ve been working on getting the student’s spelling up to snuff and tonight he aced the spelling quiz. Yes! We did a bit of extra prep beforehand, but he got all the words right this week that he got wrong last week. Hurray.
After he finished his class, I did paperwork and then more paperwork. I first did my class records up, and then did my bookkeeping things from last year. I hope everything is up to date, but for some reason some things may not have gone through yet. I’m not sure why! After that I did paperwork of a different kind. I read the newspapers from the last few days. Hurray for me.
When I finished, I called F and he picked me up. We had a nice dinner in Cocos. Well, mine was nice. Hub had sashimi on rice and didn’t like it. Why doesn’t he learn not to eat that kind of thing there?
We came straight home afterwards and at 11 watched ER. It was so nice to see George Clooney and Julianna Margulies together again, and have a visit from Doctor Benton too. Wasn’t a huge fan of his, but liked the relationship he had with Carter.
Things wound down after midnight with F taking his bath and me getting the coffee ready for the morning and also getting the gomi ready for F to take out. Since last week was a holiday there was a lot! He’s got 3 bags of stuff to take out, luckily it doesn’t weigh much.
Well, that’s it for me. I had hoped to be in bed earlier today than yesterday, but I’m not sure it will happen. If I don’t post soon, then it can’t. Got to go. Night.

Wednesday - Clear and sunny.
Today was an okay day. I got up on time but decided that I’d stay up for a while and if I wanted I’d go back to sleep. I went back to bed for a while and slept a little past my alarm. F called me when I was sleeping and said that he’d heard there was a gas explosion somewhere and wanted to make sure I was okay. It was sweet of him, but I can’t help thinking that he probably thinks I napped all the other days too. I had decided that since I hadn’t for the rest of my days off, I would today.
I watched a bit of TV, including Celebrity Apprentice, then decided to finally go out under my own power. I grabbed my bike and went for a ride over to the grocery store. They have an ATM there so I could update my school’s passbook. Hurray.
It was nice biking today, even though some people put their snow on the road to melt. It’s fine for cars, not so fine for people on bikes. Gah.
I got to the grocery store without much walking and then went to the bank machine. I did my thing and then decided to go to McDonalds for a quick bite. I had their salt and lemon chicken burger and it was quite nice. I had it with some iced tea and I sat and read part of my book.
Around 5 I decided to bike home. I was delighted that it was still light out. Hurray for that! I didn’t go my usual way as the sidewalks were still quite deep in snow. I found a way home that wasn’t a short cut or anything, but I didn’t have to walk my bike.
I got home again and chilled for a while. F was home fairly early tonight, around 6:30 I think. We did the dinner dance again. He kept suggesting bad Japanese restaurants which I refused, but he finally mentioned an okay fish restaurant so I said fine to it. We also went to a kara age shop on the way their. We got there just after they closed, but they still let us in and sold us a couple of things. Tonight’s dinner was in Hana and I liked it. I had my favourite cooked fish in a set meal, F had a udon nabe and sashimi. He ordered his stuff and then announced that I had to share the sashimi with him. Hmm? Then his nabe arrived and he dished out a bunch of it and said it was for me. I didn’t want it, and didn’t ask for it. I refused it completely and in fact didn’t have any of the sashimi either. To be honest, this is a bit of a thing with F. He orders a lot of food and then announces that I’ve got to share it with him. Well, no I don’t actually. I ordered food that I wanted, and he didn’t consult with me on the extras he ordered. Oh well. Just before we left he knocked his glass of water over all over himself and the floor. I felt a little sorry for him.
We swung by my school so I could set the heater for tomorrow. I have a class tomorrow evening so need to get over there.
We came home and F channel surfed into Erin Brockovich so we watched that. I still haven’t seen the whole thing, but it was good. Julia Roberts is one of those likeable people on screen. I think so anyway!
I watched the American Idol results show after the movie while F slept on the couch. I tried to join him there, but he was too out of it to hear me.
And that’s about it for my day. I enjoyed my day off and it was nice to get out in the sun. Heck, it was nice that there was sun! We still have tons of snow piled up everywhere, but it is starting to melt. Hurray. Hurray.

Crocheted Vision Hat
I finished sewing this together last night. It was my American Idol/Hell's Kitchen Project.
It's from a free pattern I got via Ravelry, designed by Marty Miller for Coats & Clark. I made the band around the bottom longer than in the original, and I continued the pattern for longer as well.
The yarn is an acrylic/wool blend in a light purple. It's rather pretty.
Should I leave it as is, or add a pompom to the top? Opinions?

Tuesday - Sunny and ? I didn’t go out!
I had a good day. I woke up this morning but F had already left for work. Good thing! I was paranoid after yesterday.
I had a really quiet day at home today. In the morning Cabaret was on and I watched it. I knew of course that Liza Minnelli was in it, and Joel Grey, but I had no idea that the “ King of Cats” Michael York was in it too. He was good. A very bizarre movie, but in a good way.
I watched a bit of TV today, relaxed, read the paper. Quite boring.
When F came home we cooked dinner. I made a stir-fry and F cooked some gyoza that we forgot to cook yesterday. Dinner was very nice.
In the evening we relaxed a bit. F channel surfed and surfed right into a Barry Manilow concert on TV so I made him stop so I could watch it! F didn’t know who he was until he started singing Mandy. He knows that song from me at karaoke!
F took his bath at 11 and after the concert finished I turned over to American Idol. It was a repeat of the Lennon/McCartney night and was enjoyable. I sat over on the couch and sewed my hat. I finished crocheting it last night and sewed it together tonight. It’s really cute. I’ll try and post pictures tomorrow. I want to post to Ravelry as well.
And that was my day. I hope to get out of the apartment tomorrow. I will! Right? I blame WOWOW for putting a double shot of Cold Case on at the time I usually go out. Night!

Monday - Happy Valentine’s Day - Snowy in the morning, clear later on.
Had an interesting day with an odd start. I woke up this morning to make a trip down the hall and noticed that it was after 7 am and F was still in bed, fast asleep. Oops. I woke him up and he got dressed in a hurry. I stayed up with him and then went back to bed after he left.
I got up again at 9 and was going to go back to bed, but I made the mistake of turning on the TV and watching the pre Grammy show and then got sucked into the Grammys for a while. Some of it was awful, but some of it was fun.
I ended up staying up all day!
I didn’t do a lot today, I watched the weekend’s TV and then some TV.
F came home around 6:30 and then I started dinner. Tonight we had miso pork, salad and gnocchi. It was quite good. F cut up some pickled vegetable and we had that too.
After dinner, F suggested going for a drive. I hadn’t been out all day, so I agreed. We drove around for a bit and even caught sight of a tanuki. We went to the local ski hill. We call it “The Flying Ski Hill” because it is lit up at night and we can see it from a distance. It seems to hover above the city. We got there just after nine pm and I saw a couple of cars driving out and said to F that I thought they were closing. We get into the parking lot and there were a lot of people changing clothes next to their vehicles. Then, the ski lift stopped working. I had lifted my camera to take a picture and the lights went out. Our timing was terrible!
The Flying Ski Hill up close!
We drove back to Tsuruoka, taking the long way, and stopped at Mr. Donut. I redeemed the rest of my points for another smaller bag and we got a cup of cafe au lait and some kinako donut holes.
We came home via the grocery store. My student cancelled her class tomorrow so I decided to cook dinner again. At home, we settled in to watch Hell’s Kitchen. It was part one of the finale. We also sampled some of the gorgeous chocolate that F bought us from our favourite restaurant. Yum.
Anyway, that was my day. It was quite nice. Having dinner at home was a good thing, and going out for the drive was also a good thing. Having chocolate…definitely a good thing! Night!

Sunday - The snow! The snow! Bah.
Went to bed really late last night. It was around 5 in the morning. I knew I wasn’t going to get up early, and I didn’t. I had set my alarm for 11 and woke up just before it. I got up briefly and then headed back to bed. Hub followed me and for the next hour we had snuggle and chat time. I really wanted sleep, but it was nice to talk about last night’s movie and our feelings about it.
When I got up I checked outside and immediately wished I hadn’t. When I had gone to bed there wasn’t any new snow, now there was a lot. Gah! It was warm outside, so some of it melted, but a lot didn’t. Just what we needed….Not.
Hub wanted to go to Mikawa for lunch and to do a bit of shopping so that’s what we did. We had lunch in the okonomiyaki place out there, the place where we make our own. We had two different kinds today, cheese and “Seoul” which had kimchee in it. They were both really good. There was also a special offer so we got dessert too. It was a chocolate fondant. Now, for some reason, I thought it was really small, so I insisted on getting two. However, they were large and sharing would have been a good idea. Anyway, we had huge desserts and it made me feel a little sick for a long time.
We went looking for car mats but didn’t buy any, then did a circuit of the hundred yen shop and drugstore. Stuff was bought. We headed into the mall after all that.
We had coffee at Mr. Donut and I cashed in some of my points and got a donut bag. I can get another smaller one too, if I want.
We got each other’s Valentine’s Day chocolate there too, and I have to say that trying to get rid of my husband so I could actually purchase the stuff was annoying. I grabbed the candy he said he liked and asked him to go and stand “over there” while I headed to the cash register. Next thing I notice is he’s standing in front of me trying to pay for the chocolate that I’m buying him. AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH! I wouldn’t let him and was a bit annoyed to be honest.
We looked at movies today too, but the one I wanted to see had just started and the next show wasn’t for a couple of hours. F was game, but I wasn’t.
We headed back to Tsuruoka and then had yakiniku in a place we haven’t gone for a while. With all of the snow today, parking was a pain in the butt, and F did a lot of rocking the car back and forth. This had the unintended effect of making me really nauseated. When we went into the restaurant I didn’t know if I could eat. I did of course, and then felt better. I think I was still on a sugar high from lunch and the seasickness didn’t help any.
We came home via the grocery store and then watched School of Rock. I wanted to like it, I really did, but I didn’t. It was all about Jack Black and not about the kids at all. Jack Black is so over-rated (in The Holiday, I hoped Kate Winslet would end up with Eli Wallach rather than JB). As a teacher I really thought he might try teaching his students something from their curriculum. So, a big ol’ “Don’t bother” from me on this film!
The rest of the evening was fairly quiet. I watched some of Veronica Mars and finally Hub went off to bed. He’s still awake though which will be a problem for him tomorrow.
Got to go. Night!

Saturday - Snowy then clearing in the afternoon, snow at night.
A good day today. I overslept a bit this morning because I went to bed really late. I still managed to get up and shower and then watch Grey’s Anatomy.
F and I had brunch in Cocos this morning and it was quite nice. We got to my school a bit early but I didn’t have to shovel any snow. Hurray!
My classes went well today. I had three and everyone came on time and everyone put a heart on my wall. Hurray.
After classes I finished up quickly and called F. He told me that I should meet him outside in one minute! He had been parking in my space waiting for me to finish. I jumped in the car and we went to the theatre.
We didn’t have enough time to have a meal before the movie, so we had a few snacks and then went in to see A Single Man.
Colin Firth was amazing and the setting of the film felt right. It also had quite a different feel from the usual Hollywood movie. It was fashion designer Tom Ford’s first film, let’s hope that it isn’t his last.
After the movie, F and I tried to find somewhere to eat. Our first choice was busy, so we went to Coco Ichibanya for curry. We had a very yummy meal and then came home.
It was half past twelve before I realised that I was missing Top Gear, so I hurriedly turned on the TV and got to watching. I’ve turned my hubby into a fan too I think! (And yes, I do know about the recent controversy….) Watched Burn Notice afterwards and it was exciting.
That’s about it for my day. I’m not sure of our plans for tomorrow. Hopefully, lots of sleep, since it is already 4 am. Sigh. I’m so bad! Night.

Friday - Cold and snowy.
Today was okay. I slept in quite late. We didn’t have any plans made so I felt like sleeping!
When I got up we sat and drank coffee for a while, then went out for lunch. F, as always, wanted soba. When he told me I wasn’t happy as I had dressed in a new shirt that I got for Christmas. Soba eating, my way, is messy and I really didn’t want to ruin my nice shirt. I changed.
We went to a new place for me and it was okay. I didn’t have to sit on the floor and there were no annoying people asking F personal questions about me. Hurray for that. Lunch was okay. We had the same thing, soba with tofu and tempura. I had dark soba, F had white soba.
After lunch we did a bit of shopping. I needed a few things for my school and our apartment, so we picked them up. We dropped them off and my school too and spent a few minutes there making some more hearts for my wall.
We came home briefly and then went to karaoke for three hours or so. It was a lot of fun. I made a surprising discovery. I found a song in that was a big hit in Britain during the week I was there when I was 19! The song was Dolce Vita by Ryan Paris, a guy who was basically a one hit wonder. It was a great song though!
We came home and had a quiet evening. We didn’t even turn on the TV until after midnight! I just watched an old episode of Numbers and I’ll likely go to bed soon as I have a busy day at work tomorrow. Busy, or long? Bit of both I guess. Hopefully I won’t have to do any snow shovelling as the snow hasn’t been staying much.
Anyway, that was my day. It wasn’t bad at all. I hope tomorrow goes as well! Night.

Thursday - Cold and snowy. Bleck!
Today was mostly a good day. I got up on time, did the laundry that didn’t get done yesterday and relaxed for a bit in the morning.
In the afternoon, I was watching something on video, doing my laundry and decided to pop some popcorn in the microwave. At the same time, my washing machine started the spin cycle. All of a sudden I was surrounded by silence and darkness!
I wondered if perhaps a power line was down. I tried to check the fuse box, but it’s up high and I could barely open the lid, let along get a good look at it. I looked into the lobby of our building to see if anyone else came out, but during the day, the lights aren’t on and no one is home usually.
I settled down on the couch with my AFWJ Journal and a cup of coffee for a few minutes. It was nice and relaxing and I read quite a bit. Then, I decided to text F to see if he had heard about a power outage. He finally called me back and suggested I go outside to switch on the light in the parking lot. How come I hadn’t thought of that? I put on my boots and coat and checked it. It worked. Ah ha! It was my power that was out. Silly me.
I had to get our stepladder and set it up so I could reach the fuse box. Sure enough, the switch was off. I reset the switch and my peaceful interlude was over.
After a nice lunch I headed off to my school. I walked again today as there had been a bit of snow. It wasn’t deep, but it covered up some of the ice. When I got to my school I grabbed my shovel and cleared a bit of snow. There wasn’t that much, but it needed to be done.
I came back in after shovelling and got ready for my class. My student came and he was okay. His spelling is really terrible though, and even though I get him to write the words he misspells 5 times, he never remembers them. Should I try for ten times?
After his class, I was shocked to see a lot of snow on my walkway. Ack. I girded myself for the snow and went outside. All the work I had done earlier was covered. In the 2 hours since I had been outside, about 3 inches of snow had fallen. It was soft and light, so I could move it, but what a pain. I soon had the front and back cleared and went back inside.
I prepped for my student and when she came we had a good lesson. She made a heart for my new heart wall for Valentine’s Day, and then we got into the lesson.
After her class, I noticed there was a lot of snow outside again. Grr. I was quite busy for a while. I had to do prep for the first student’s next lesson and also a bit for Saturday. I think I managed okay.
I called F when I was finished and he came for me. Our first restaurant choice was very busy, so I tentatively suggested Marumatsu. It’s a Japanese restaurant nearish our apartment. We hardly ever go there because their food can be less than great sometimes. We went there and it was good! We both had ikura and crab don, in a set meal. It came with miso soup, pickles, chawanmushi and dessert. I have to say I was quite impressed.
We came home, watched ER and then F went to bed. He is a bit confused about tomorrow. He told me he wanted to go to his doctor, but it’s a national holiday. I think he thinks it is Friday going on Saturday, not Thursday going on Holiday Friday. Sure hope he doesn’t go to work by accident tomorrow morning!
That’s it. Got to go. Night!

Wednesday - Snowy and rainy.
Today was an okay day. I woke up and got up to watch the news this morning. Then, I was really tired so I went back to bed for a while.
I got up, watched some TV on tape and did laundry. I’m not done, but I did three loads and got most of it done. I’ll try and do the rest tomorrow I think.
I did a bit of vacuuming, had my leftover butter chicken for lunch. It was so good!
Around 5 pm I got a huge headache and I couldn’t see straight for a bit. I took a couple of tylenol and had a nap on the couch. I woke up an hour later feeling a little bit better.
F came home around 7 and he did some laundry and had a lie-down. We decided to go out for dinner after 8.
After 8 pm we gathered up the newspapers and went to Grado. We had a lovely meal. I had fish, F had chicken. It’s opposite the way we usually order I think!
We did a quick drive by my school so I could set the heater for tomorrow and then came home again. We relaxed for a while and then watched American Idol. I did quite a bit of crocheting. I’m going to have to do extra sections on my hat if I want it to fit me, and I do! I thought my gauge was okay, but it must be off.
That’s it for tonight. It was a quiet day, and I’m glad. I needed one today. I just hope that headache doesn’t come back tomorrow. Night!
