Happity New Year...cough cough..

Since I'm probably going to get myself off to bed soon, I'm posting early and boringly for tonight. Sorry.

Here's some photos from our trip. We visited Jouzenji Dori in Sendai, which we discovered is all lit up at this time of year. It was lovely. Just too crowded to take some good photos, but it didn't stop me from trying.

We came back tonight. Discovered it didn't snow while we were away (although the mountains were quite snowy coming back through them) and discovered that I've come down with something. Not feeling good at all. Hot cheeks, nasty cough, think I'll hie me hither to bed soon.

December 28, 2009 - Monday

Cool and rainy, maybe a little snow.

I had a quiet day today. I stayed home for the most part. I had thought about going out, but decided not to as the weather was so bad. Instead, I vegged and watched Project Runway repeats and my weekend TV.

In the evening F came home and called the Electric shop. His computer was ready, so we went and picked it up. I had a gander around the store and drooled over a lovely Mac that was there.

We had dinner at the Tonkatsu restaurant. The food is good there, but sort of boring. F always wants to have the same thing, and I'm just going there to be nice, so really I didn't pick much of what we ordered. I got a nasty splinter in my hand from my pair of chopsticks. I couldn't get it out either, so it was sore for a bit.

We came home after the meal and F made us some coffee. I took the splinter out and then went back to work on my column for the Journal. I think I chose some interesting films this time. I finished a little after midnight and then did some tweaking on it.

That's about it for me. I'll be out of town for a couple of nights. We're going to Sendai to live it up and have some fun. Wish us luck with that! Some of our trips don't end that well, so cross your fingers for me eh?

December 27, 2009 - Sunday

Grey day, bit of rain, cloudy.

I slept in very very late this morning. We didn't go to bed until 5 am. F got up after only 4 hours. I don't know how he can do that. I can't function on that little sleep. Still, he let me sleep and didn't get annoyed, so I am happy.

He wanted to have soba for lunch. Frankly, the thought of heavy soba just sitting in my stomach all day didn't make me happy. After a while and a bit of complaining on my part, I told him I'd go and have soba with him if he'd promise to have non-Japanese food for dinner. He grudgingly agreed. We went to about 3 soba restaurants and they were all closed. The thing is, they were all family run places and this is a family get together season. We ended up at New York, New York where we had a nice lunch. I had a burger, F had udon and we shared a pork salad. It was quite nice.

We headed out to the Mikawa mall to see if we could see a movie. We got there and discovered that the movie Avatar was starting in 5 minutes! 5! F got the tickets and I got the popcorn and drinks, and we went to see it. The story wasn't too complicated, but the special effects were quite good. I enjoyed it, but didn't quite feel it was worth all the fuss.

After the movie, we did a little shopping. I got more tea tree oil, and we tried to find a new belt for F. Man, is he picky. This one's too modern, that one's too flashy, and I wouldn't let him buy the one that was too long. Argh. His present belt is being held together with scotch tape if you can believe it. It makes me a little annoyed! We didn't find anything and decided to go for coffee. Seattle's Best had decaf listed as one of their brews of the day, so I ordered it. However, they had finished it for the day. I didn't want anything else, so I told F to get something and I wouldn't bother. We both ended up leaving. I hope he wasn't angry at me, but honestly. SB should have put some kind of marker over the note about decaf, or changed it. I prefer decaf if I had a choice.

We decided to have dinner in or near the mall, but in the mall wasn't much. Instead we went to an okonomiyaki restaurant behind the mall. It's a place where you cook your own. It was quite nice. We had two kinds, a mix with lots of mayonnaise, and one with shrimp and avocado. F made the first one, I made the second one. Afterwards, we shared an order of gyoza and an order of eringi and bacon. That last one was really nice. I would definitely have that again.

We drove home and had tea. We had just missed Mamma Mia (sob!) and there wasn't anything on so it was nice and quiet. Hurray. I let F have a look at the Apple store on line. I think I've got him talked into getting a Mac...and it may be soon! His computer is down with the second major virus of its life, the screen has two lines running down it and it just plain old doesn't work that well. I think it's time he got a real computer :-)

Tomorrow I'm off at home. I may go to the bank if the weather is okay. I have to deposit some money for my school and I'd like to get a calendar if I can. I also have to pay a bill as I'll be out of prefecture when it comes due.

December 26, 2009 - Saturday

Rainy, then clearing at night.

A pretty good day. I woke up this morning and watched some news and then showered. F came back from the doctor and we went out for brunch. We went to Marumatsu today, which was okay, but not great, as usual!

While we were in the restaurant, I realized that I had left my glasses at home. Sigh. I asked F to take me to work and then go home and get them for me. He was a dear and did that for me.

I had 3 classes today and they went well, I'm happy to say. I didn't have classes last week due to the weather, so it was nice to see my students before the break.

After work, F picked me up and we went to Sakata to have Indian food. It was great. We had naan, tandori chicken and two kinds of curry. Very nice.

We came home and watched Iron Man on TV and now are watching Project Runway on TV. It's an old one, but it's fun.

It was a nice day today. Hopefully, things will go well tomorrow too. Night!

December 25, 2009 - Friday - Merry Christmas!

Sunny but cool.

I got up a little late this morning, but was still able to watch the news and have a relaxing morning. After I got dressed, I watched some of the TV I taped last night and enjoyed myself. My day went on like this until after 4:00pm. I went out a little after 4 and went to the post office to get more nengajo. I'll probably need extra.

After I came home, I set the table. For our dinner tonight I wanted to make it a little special, so I cleared off our coffee table, raised it up, and set it. Then I peeled the potatoes I was going to cook for dinner and left them in water. I wasn't sure what was up with F. He was supposed to pick up the chicken. Finally, he called me a bit after 6 to tell me that he had picked it up and was on his way.

When he came home, I made him change and then we decided what to do. We needed some milk, some salad and a few other things. We also needed to visit my school to turn on the heater's timer, plus mail our nengajo. It took us so long to get out of our apartment that in the end I just sent F to do it all. I realized that if I didn't get things started we wouldn't eat before 10 pm! So, he left and I got ready to cook. I mixed things up, I just didn't cook them until he got back again.

Of course, he didn't buy the right things--chocolate ice cream to have with Christmas pudding? Ewww. But, his heart was in the right place and he did get some pumpkin salad. Yum.

With a bit of work on both our our parts, we got everything together. We had roast chicken (bought from the butcher), mashed potatoes, gravy, Yorkshire pudding, fabulous mushrooms from a can, salad and pumpkin salad. Everything was good, except my timing was off, so things were a bit cold, BUT everything was delicious. F even had seconds and he never does that!

We washed the dishes and put the food away, then we opened presents. I was really lucky and got many things that I really wanted. My sister and my best friend sent pajamas, which is something I can always use, a new handbag from my husband, I got tea, a couple of necklaces, a t-shirt and lots of little things too. It was great! F got quite a lot too. He's always surprised that my family gets him things. He got a fleece jacket and pair of fleece pants from my family, I gave him practical things like underwear, socks and shirts. I also gave him a bag of snack food and a 3-D puzzle.

We watched Tropic Thunder, I liked parts of it, but thought that overall it wasn't that great. It wasn't really a typical Christmas movie. During the movie I prepared the Christmas Pudding and then served it. I tried to flambe it, but it didn't work very well! We had our pudding with cream, rather than chocolate ice cream. A much better choice if you ask me!

That's basically my day. It was really good. I got lots of presents and had a good meal. Yum.

December 24, 2009 - Thursday

Clear and warmish!

A good day today. I got up, checked my computer stuff and then showered. When I came back I watched the Italian cooking show that is on. It's wonderful, but I have no way of making the stuff she does. In the afternoon, I watched Merlin on tape. I am really getting into that show. It's a neat variation of the Camelot legends.

During the day I had debated about going to work on bicycle or on foot. I decided to go by bike, so around 4 I hopped on my trusty blue Bridgestone. I was able to ride a lot of the way. I did have to walk in a few places, but generally, I did well. The one thing I dislike about melting days is local people just throw their snow onto the road so that cars will smash and melt it. It's fine for cars, with 4 thick tires to do that, kind of dangerous for a bicycle with 2 thin tires. I made a stop at the drugstore as I was quite early, and got some things for home and school. When I checked out, the woman asked if I wanted to use my points from my card so I said yes. I ended up getting a 1000 yen off coupon, so I got a nice big discount today. Hurray for me!

When I got to my school, I had a big surprise. The LeoPalace people had actually arranged for some snow removal! I was really surprised. They said they didn't do that. There was a big Cat and a truck next to it being filled with snow. Wahoo! It did make a big difference, I'm happy to say. Inside, my school was a little cool, but not bad really. I had set the heater last night. It warmed up quite a bit when I was there.

Classes tonight were fine. My first one cancelled tonight as she was too busy, but the other two happened. I was glad about that. I didn't finish for a long time afterwards as I had to catch up on my paperwork. Sigh. Always something to do there.

When F met me tonight, we went to Cocos for dinner. The reason was they had Christmas mud pie on special and we had coupons. Woot. It was quite nice actually. We didn't get home until after midnight though. Before he'd left home, I asked F to record ER for us tonight, but he forgot. I could tell that he was upset about it. However, when I got home and checked the paper, it wasn't on anyway. Whew. I'm glad I didn't yell at him or give him a hard time about it.

And that's about it. I watched the late night movie on NHK, Proof. I liked it a lot. I haven't seen Gwyneth Paltrow in that much so haven't been impressed, but she was interesting in this. So, now you know about as much as I do about my day! Have a merry Christmas eh! Night.

December 23, 2009 - Wednesday

Cloudy with a bit of rain.

I slept in quite late this morning. My alarms didn't go off in my cell phone and F is quiet when he's bopping around the apartment. Anyway, I got up and worked on a few nengajo. I got all my student ones done, and a few of the more personal ones that I have to send.

We had lunch at Kintaro Sushi. It wasn't crowded at all. However, they were busy because many people called them for take out sushi! After lunch we just came home again and I did more nengajo.

In the evening F went to his mother's house and grabbed my snow scoop. Then he picked me up and we went to my school to make the exchange. I dropped off the student nengajo there too as I want to use my school's stamp on them. After that, gah. We had been discussing all night about where to go for dinner. F wanted either soba or ramen and I told him that I couldn't stomach any more Japanese food today. I thought we'd reached a compromise by deciding to go to an izakaya. I could get some salad, some chicken, lots of stuff, and F could get noodles if he wanted. I got back in the car, and he started whining about going to a ramen shop. "Fine," I told him, "Go ahead. But, take me to the grocery store first so I can get some food." He did take me to the grocery store and I was quite annoyed. I got myself some chicken and a salad, then we came home. He dropped me off and I cooked my dinner. He went off to his mother's to drop off the snow scoop.

I had a lovely dinner of spicy chicken wings and a salad. I cooked it, I ate it and I cleaned it up. It was great. When he came home, he made himself ramen. Then he proceeded to watch some crappy Japanese TV so I did my best to tune him out until I made him switch over for Ugly Betty. Hah. I missed the end of last week's episode. I missed a lot I think.

Anyway, we made up later on, and talked a bit. I'm wondering if it is possible to ride my bike to work tomorrow. I'd really like to, because I have a bad foot and walking isn't good for it, but it might be a tad dangerous. I guess I'll have to wait and see what the weather is like tomorrow.

December 22, 2009 - Tuesday

Rain, thunder, clearing...weird weather day.

Back to work today! I got up at a goodly time and had coffee and watched Diane Sawyer do the news today. She was good. Very gracious. I think I'll warm up to her eventually, if NHK doesn't decide to take off the news in favour of that sport with sticks...and I don't mean hockey!

During the daytime I did a lot of laundry. It had been piling up for a while and I didn't want to have to worry about it next week when I'm on holiday. So, it's done. Yay me. I also wrapped hubby's Christmas presents. The ones that he knows about already, I didn't really wrap, but the others I did.

It rained rather torrentially during the early part of the day, but when I was ready to go to work it wasn't as fierce. It was raining enough to need my raincape though. I left just before it got dark, so when I was closer to my school it was a bit darker than I had hoped it would be. Still, I made it safely.

I checked the parking place and it was fine. There wasn't any new snow there. The entrance to the parking lot was a bit loose with all the rain, but I thought it would work.

I went in the school and proceeded to warm up the joint. It was cold in there. Although the heater had started it was only 13 degrees in the room. Brr. I did some vacuuming and generally got the school back in shape. I also read the Sunday and today's papers.

My student came and we had a good lesson. I grabbed a cup of coffee during the class, which is something I never do. I was cold and tired, not a good combo for me.

Afterwards I caught up on my paperwork and checked the set up for Thursday's classes. It was a good thing that I checked them, as one of them had to have the lesson plan pulled out. After that, I called F and asked him to come and get me.

He came and picked me up and we went to Gusto for dinner. It was a cheap and cheerful dinner. We had almost the same thing...a pork and bean sprout stirfry. He had his on noodles, I had mine with French fries. Yes, I shared!

We came home and watched the 2 hour season finale of American Idol. I really enjoyed it this time around. I'd missed a few scenes the first time. It was a good show I thought. There were lots of different genres of music too, so it was interesting to see who they featured doing them.

And that was that. Tomorrow is a national holiday. I have no idea what we'll be doing. Hopefully resting a bit! I'll talk to you tomorrow night. Bye!

Today's building would be one of my haunts if this was a real town. It's the little bookstore. It's a two-chimneyed brick building near the center of the picture. There is a horse and buggy in the street opposite the store. The store is next to the white building with the yellow windows and green window boxes. Can you see it?

December 21, 2009 - Monday

Cloudy, bit of hail and snow, windy, cold.

Had a spot of trouble getting up this morning. It was still morning, but only barely! I didn't have any plans really, so it didn't matter that much.

When I got up I vegged a bit and then I made lunch. I had my usual omelette with sausages, and it was nice. After that, I headed over to my school.

At the school, I put my stuff inside, grabbed my snow dump and shovel and went off to the back to see the parking space. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. It hadn't been done since last Thursday, so needed a bit of work. There was no place in the parking lot to put the extra snow, so I ended up taking it down the road a little to a stream or canal and dumping it in there. I must have made 25 trips or so. I did move a ton of snow, so that was good, but I was quite tired at the end. I got a message from F that he was on his way home from work and would pick me up. It was dark by now, and then we had hail, so I decided to quit for the night. I went into my apartment and waited for him. I also took my advent calendar photos.

He showed up and was a bit cranky. He basically told me that my parking space wasn't done well enough. He got stuck trying to get out of it. The reason was that I had taken the snow off all the way to the concrete. Apparently, the ledge at the front was a problem for him. Grr. I wish he had said that, instead of that my space wasn't cleared enough. Anyway, we headed out.

He needed gas, so we got that first, then headed out to the post office. We were there to pick up presents from my best friend and a British relative. Hurray for that. We came home again and I took a quick shower. While I was getting clean clothes for the shower, he started doing a load of laundry. I asked him to please wait and he seemed a bit annoyed. I tried to explain to him that if he did laundry while I was in the shower, the temperature of my water would change, and not in a nice way. He didn't really seem to care, but didn't start it. After my shower, I started up the washing machine.

We went out for yakiniku. After he named the restaurant, I changed my shirt. He thought it was weird, but I'm the world's messiest eater. Almost everything I eat ends up on my shirt, and yakiniku is just too dangerous!

We picked up a few groceries after dinner and came home. He watched some TV for a while and then went to bed to wait for his bath. I watched Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. Not sure about either show now. I really liked Private Practice at first, but they're making Addison too nice or something. It's a bit sad when I like the other characters more than the lead!

Anyway, that's about it for me. Tomorrow I have one class, if she decides to come. I'll try to go over early because it isn't much fun walking over in the dark, and I'd like to do a little more snow removal. Actually, I'll likely have to. That's it. Night night!

December 20, 2009 - Sunday

Clear with some snow and wind.

This morning when I woke up I sat up in bed, swore a little and asked my husband if the living room clock said 6:00 or 12:30. I can't see very well when I first wake up, and I was hoping it was 6:00. It wasn't. Sigh. Still, it was kind of funny. I got up, made the bed and then hung out for a while. I would like to point out that I was dressed long before my husband though. He was bopping around the apartment in his pajamas for a long time.

We tried going to the post office to pick up my parcels, but we got there too late. Sigh. They closed for parcel pick-up at 3 pm. Oh well. We had lunch at New York, New York, then went over to the electronic store nearby. I got a new mouse for my computer. I've gamed too much on mine and it doesn't want to work properly now, and a new mousepad. I have the worst trouble with them.

We came home for a bit. F watched some of Alias Smith and Jones (I did too!) and I printed a few nengajo. I made some for him and a few for myself. I like changing mine for the person I'm going to send them to.

In the evening we went out again for dinner to Grado. I was horrified because they gave me a note from the ex-student that I don't like. He had seen me after all and wants me to call him. I don't want to! What should I do? Lose the note? Ignore it? Wait until after the holidays?

We picked up some groceries for hubby and then came home. We watched more of Smith and Jones and then I watched Veronica Mars. I like the show, or what I've seen of it, but I haven't been able to watch an entire season or more than 3 episodes in a row, so I don't know where I am.

Anyway, that was my day. It was a very relaxing sort of fun day, except for the driving. It's tough around here as all the roads are so snowy. Most of the little local roads are barely one lane now, and of course Japanese drivers are maniacs, so I will have even more grey hair after this winter is over!

That's it for me. Tomorrow I plan to walk over to the school and see if I need to shovel, and if I can do some paperwork. I have a lot of work to catch up now. Night!

Day 19 brings us another large building. Today's building is the large white building on the lower left side. It is next to the house with the bridge. It's a beauty, eh?

December 19, 2009 - Saturday

Cool with a bit of wind and a little snow.

When I got up this morning I had a bit of a think and I decided to cancel my remaining class for today. It was the early class, which meant that F and I would have had to go immediately to the school to do snow shovelling, plus try and have breakfast and neither of us were in great condition after all the snow shovelling from the day before. We faxed the student's family and said that we were cancelling the day's lesson because of the bad weather. The roads around my school are not in great condition and at the moment, getting into my parking space isn't very easy.

I watched the news this morning and silly as it sounds, ended up in tears at the end of the show. I have really enjoyed watching Charlie Gibson on the news, and it is sad to think that he won't be there any more. Even F was a little sad, and he doesn't even watch the news with me usually.

I went and had a sleep after the news. I went to bed and woke up around 2 pm. I was surprised to be honest. F had gone out to buy kerosene and I hadn't even heard him leave. My arm and back muscles have been hurting a lot, plus I've also developed a painful foot problem, so I just needed more sleep. I did feel a lot better when I woke up.

We had brunch in Jiro and then headed out to the mall in Mikawa. It was quite amazing to see the amount of snow in places. I can't really believe it. We got so much and it isn't even winter yet.

At Mikawa we went shopping for Christmas presents. We basically told each other what we wanted and then let the other person buy it. However, I told F that I wanted something "fun" too. I don't really like knowing exactly what I'm getting. I wanted to have some surprises on Christmas day. I got him some stuff, but while I was looking at puzzles for him...who should come walking by, but him. Argh. Then, when I was heading into one last shop for a snoop, I bumped into....him again. Gah. Anyway, we ended up meeting for gingerbread lattes at Seattle's Best. They were okay.

We drove back into Tsuruoka and went to karaoke. We had free time so we ended up singing away for 4+ hours. It was fun. I did a bunch of Christmas songs along with many of my old favourites. We had some food at the karaoke box, so we didn't need dinner afterwards.

We came home and vegged for a while. F went to sleep a little earlier than I thought he would, but he is a bit tired with this weather. When we came in the apartment building tonight I heard an interesting sound. Dripping. It's melting out there. It can't happen soon enough for me. Probably won't last though.

And more Christmas cards tonight. Hurray. There were three in my mailbox, and a note from the post office that there are two packages waiting for me. TWO. Yay!

December 18, 2009 - Friday

Snowy and windy.

There were periods today when it didn't snow, but not too many of them. Still it was a fairly good day for me.

I had planned to go over to the school in the morning and do some snow shovelling, but I didn't. My heel was bothering me and I was still quite sore from shovelling yesterday. However, I really had planned to go over. I even ate lunch at an early time today, rather than leave it too late.

In the afternoon, I went outside and shovelled some snow. I cleared out our apartment's parking stall again, then worked on clearing the extra snow on the roadway. I did quite a big chunk of work. While I was working a few children came by on their way home. One little boy said "Konnichiwa" to me and then proceeded to talk to me when I answered him. He asked me if I was from France! I was surprised and said no. Then he asked if I was American. Nope again. Then he just asked where I was from. I told him and then he tried to say a few more things to me in Japanese, but that was about where my Nihongo ran out! I really don't speak Japanese much. Still, it was nice to see a child being friendly rather than running away in fear from me!

I went in and started to get ready for my party. I showered and then blew my hair dry. That doesn't happen often. F called a bit after and said he was on his way home. I wasn't sure if he would be home before I had to leave, but he was. He offered to drive me to the restaurant, even though it's quite close. It was nasty out there.

At Grado I met up with one of my students and we went inside. We'd been there for a while when another of my students called to say she was caught in traffic and would be late. The other student didn't call, but did turn up about 15 minutes late. Finally, around 7:30, the last student arrived. We had a really nice meal. We had salad, carpaccio, pan gratin, fish, pasta, calzone and french fries. I didn't really like the fish as there were too many bones, but one of my students has an allergy to chicken so I couldn't really subject her to it. We ate and talked. Two of my students know each other, but there was one who doesn't know the others. Most of our talking was in English,but every now and then it veered into Japanese. We had a good time together. Sadly, one of the students had to leave to pick up her son, but the others and I stayed on. We had chocolate fondue (with way too many bananas) and then coffee to finish. The fondue was very good. The chocolate was bittersweet, very nice. I stopped eating it because I was just too full.

I phoned F to come and get me, and then we paid our bill and left. It was a really fun night for me. I think the students liked it too. Two really strange things about our meal tonight. There were a couple of other foreigners in the restaurant talking about coming to Japan. They were sitting with some teachers so I think they were ALT's. They were so loud! I was a bit surprised. They still had that "speak loudly and slowly and everyone will understand" thing going on. One of the teachers in their party was a student of mine from when I first came to Tsuruoka. And, at another table was another former student of mine. He was my student from when I started up until almost the end of my career at L'Eikaiwa. He was one of my most disliked students. Another teacher...good English, just not interested in working to improve it. So, I was trying to avoid seeing him/making eye contact/ and letting him know I was there. If I'm honest, I have a huge fear that he will find out about my school and try to become a student of mine again. I don't think I could possibly take that much table tennis ever again!

Anyway, F drove me over to my school and we checked it out. The owner of the parking space next to mine had done some shovelling, so actually my space wasn't too bad. However, I'd still have to do some tomorrow before a student could park there. Also, there was still no clear way from the carpark to the apartment building. My students would have to walk around on the road to the front entrance.

However, during the evening one student called me to cancel her class, and another emailed, so I may just have one class tomorrow. Or, none! I'm thinking of phoning her mum and telling her that parking is very difficult at my school. It really is at the moment. F managed, but he's a pro at driving. Anyway, we'll wait and see what happens. There is more snow forecast for tomorrow and I'm really not sure what will go down. I really should go to the school and do some catch up paperwork. All the cancellations and makeups need to be recorded.
