May 31, 2009 - Sunday

Cloudy and rainy.

I woke up this morning with a headache. It was bad enough that I got up and took a tablet and didn't go back to sleep. I had enough of the fighting, so I went up to dear hubby and said to him that I was sorry about my rudeness on the phone yesterday, and that I thought we should make up or the entire weekend would be a washout for both of us. It worked.

We went out to a cell phone shop. On Friday I noticed that my cellphone is broken. It still works, but the hinge is breaking and there is a broken bit on the body of the phone. I have to be careful how I close it as it will keep working otherwise. We hacked around the shop, got a list of the ones that are bilingual and had a good look. I think I have picked out a style, now I have to choose the colour. I like the purple one, but as Fumihiko pointed out to me, the white one is a little bit easier to read letters on for texting. The sales lady told us that if we came back tomorrow some fee that they'd charge me would be eliminated, so we'll try and come back on Wednesday. (Fumihiko's going to the doctor after work tomorrow and I work late on Tuesday.)

We had brunch at New York, New York and then drove out to the mall to see Star Trek. We got there ages early so had cappucinos and then did some window shopping. I looked at sunglasses for a few minutes. That was fun. Fumihiko wanted me to get a pair that were shaped like hearts. I said no.

We went to Star Trek and I really liked it. I was a fan of the Next Generation the most, but have seen all the movies and lots of Star Trek in my life. Purists may not like it, but I enjoyed the movie. I thought they should have had more of Mr. Scott in it though. Fumihiko seemed to like it too, but I'm not sure how much Trek he's seen in his life.

We had an early dinner at Cocos and then came home. We vegged for a bit, then watched the House from last night on video. Fumihiko wanted to watch Into the Blue, which I told him is about "dumb pretty people in bikinis".

Near the end of the movie I realized that I was hungry, so when it was over I asked hubby if he was too. He was, so we made a gyudon run. We both had gyudon and grilled unagi. It wasn't bad. I even ate all the rice.

We came home and after that, Fumihiko took a bath and went to bed.

Tomorrow I'm hoping it'll be nice enough to go out, but if it isn't, I'll stay home and either clean or make soup. If I'm really motivated I might do both! Night.

May 30, 2009 - Saturday

Warm and sunny.

So not a great day today. I got up and showered in a world of silence. As I was stressed and my murder and mayhem show wasn't on, I decided to take a half hour naplet. I went into the bedroom and tried to sleep. When I came out 30 minutes later, the apartment was empty. There was no note or anything. I decided to walk to work.

I stopped at the grocery store to get something for breakfast and lunch. I was packing my groceries into my backpack when I felt my phone vibrate. It was him. I answered and wasn't terribly polite. He wanted to know where I was. I told him I was walking to work and hung up on him.

I got to the school fairly early and ate my breakfast, then changed and got ready for my class. I had a really good one with my student. She's doing incredibly well.

I had a long break which I used to prep classes, read the newspaper and my novel, This Charming Man by Marian Keyes. Ironically, I didn't go out at all. My second class of the day was also good. We worked more on fluency today and I think the student liked it.

After she left I cleaned up and wasted time until I couldn't really put it off any longer. I locked up the school and headed home. When I got home he was watching TV and didn't say anything to me. This continued for a while until he went to bed around 8:45 or so. He made intermittant appearances throughout the evening, but we did talk a little bit. Not much. I ate dinner.

Because he wasn't around, I was able to watch my CSI shows and later on I watched House. I'm a bit pumped because they've put House on now instead of Heroes. I've seen a bit of House before, but I think this is from the beginning.

Anyway, I'm going to bed soon. I have a feeling I'm going to need all the sleep I can get. Wish me luck on the morrow. Night!

May 29, 2009 - Friday

Hot and sunny. Gorgeous day.

Today started okay. I got up late so I didn't go for a walk. I did vow to get extra exercise today somehow however, and I was lucky enough to get some Bookmooches from one person. That meant I had to go to the post office. As I needed to go to the bank too, I decided to go to the not terribly close post office and mail my books. It's across the street from the bank I use. Yay. But, as usual, I'm ahead of myself.

After I got up, I had some coffee and watched Re:Genesis. Fun. I packaged up a video, and 4 books to send to a friend. I took them out to the post office, then stopped in the bakery for a sandwich and the convenience store for a drink. I came home again.

The rest of my afternoon was quiet until I wanted to go to work. Then I made my lunch and headed off. I made a run through the drugstore and then got to my school.

When my student came we had a good lesson. He was in a good mood, not as tired as usual, and did well. We even finished a little early so we played a game using the target. The best thing? Nobody bled!

After a bit I called Fumihiko and asked him to come and get me, and leave my bicycle at the school. I suggested going to the grocery store and getting something for dinner. So we did, sadly. We spent some time getting everything ready for eating and then someone got mad at me and stormed into the bedroom. The whole point of eating at home was spoiled.

I watched a movie called The Darwin Awards which had parts that were funny in a "oh I can't believe I'm laughing at that" way. It wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, by a long shot, but it was okay.

Tomorrow I'm off to the school. As I'm not being talked to I may have to walk there, but I'm not sure. I hope things will have blown over by then. Anyway, that's all you get from me for tonight! Got to go.

May 28, 2009 - Thursday

Hot and sunny.

I woke up this morning a little after 8 am and decided not to go back to sleep. It was a beautiful sunny day, so I decided to get dressed and go to the park for a walk. So, that's what I did. I put on my clothes, grabbed my hat, iPod and Alien Registration card, hopped on my bike and rode to the park. When I was there, I parked my bike and then spent the next 15 minutes walking. It was actually rather nice, except I should remember to warm up next time.

I came home, had some coffee and got on with my day. I had a quiet morning at home. I watched Monk from earlier in the week and then rewatched Desperate Housewives because there was nothing else on. I went back and re-cued the episode for Fumihiko. I even left him a note on the table today telling him that he could watch it if he wanted to. He went to bed on the show last night.

I had a nice lunch and then left for work. I made good time on my bicycle. However, I did have scratch my head at some Junior High School girls that passed me on the way. We were all on the sidewalk on our bicycles. They were riding three abreast. I've often thought that two bikes side by side is too much, three was asking for trouble.

My school was a sweltering 27 degrees when I got there so the air conditioner went on right away. I also did some vacuuming before my first class. However, my first student cancelled today. She's off on a business trip tomorrow and wasn't quite ready to leave yet. She scheduled another class for next week.

My other two classes went fairly well. We all seemed to have a good time. In my last class of the day we talked about some of the craftwork that we've done in our lives. That was fun.

Fumihiko sent me a message just after 9 and sounded like he was in a good mood. He must have watched the video! I wasn't ready to go though. Today I had a lot of filing and paper shuffling to do. It took a long time. I also had my regular paperwork to do after my class so I wasn't able to finish until almost 10. I called Fumihiko at the point when I was going to do my dishes.

He picked me up and we decided to go to Fireball again. We went last week and it was a fairly nice Italian restaurant with terrible music. Tonight we went and were the only customers. I had pasta again, fish and mushrooms in a basil sauce. It was okay. The fish and mushrooms were tasty, but I couldn't really taste the basil sauce. Fumihiko had half a chicken, roasted Mexican style. We weren't sure what that meant, but it was served with some nice salsa on the side, so maybe that made it Mexican? Anyway, tonight's music was much better, heck they even played Rod Stewart, so you know I'd be happy! Fumihiko's chicken was great, my pasta was good, so another nice restaurant. We finished up and paid. Fumihiko did apologize to the chef for keeping him as we finished after the closing time. Sorry!

We came home and just vegged. We chatted a little bit about this and that, but Fumihiko went to bed after a while. I should be off soon too. The earlier than usual morning made me a little tired.

Got to go. Night!

May 27, 2009 - Wednesday

Sunny and hot, but a bit hazy.

Today was not my typical Wednesday, but it wasn't too bad really. I got up a few minutes after hubby left for the doctor. When he came back we vegged for a bit and then went out to the mall. First we had lunch at Cocos and then went into the mall.

We went to see State of Play with Russell Crowe and Helen Mirren. Those two were terrific in an okay movie. I much prefered the mini-series of the story that I saw on TV. The mini-series had much more time to go into details of the story, making it better. But in the just over 2 hour movie they did pack a lot of information.

After the movie we bought some bread and Fumihiko did offer to give me some shopping time by myself. But I was tired, hot and my feet hurt, so I said no. I know, I'm not sure when the next time I'll get the chance will be, but I just didn't feel like it today.

We came back to Tsuruoka then and had drinks in a coffee shop near my school. After that, it was home for us. We spent some quiet time at home. Fumihiko took a nap, I surfed the internet.

After a while we went out for dinner. We had soba. I wasn't really in the mood for it, but I couldn't think of somewhere else to go, so went along with it. When we finished, we ran into the convenience store next door for some milk, then came home. We watched Desperate Housewives but Fumihiko went to bed on it. It was pretty funny though. I think I'll ask him if he wants to watch the tape of it tomorrow.

That's pretty much it for my day today. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't as fun for me as it would have been if I'd gotten to spend the day by myself. I'm really a hermit at heart.

I'm out of here!

May 26, 2009 - Tuesday

Muggy. A bit cold earlier on, then warmer.

An okay day. I got up early, then ended up taking a nap on the couch later as I was really tired and cold. It wasn't a long nap. I went off to work around 2 pm.

I had three classes today, and they went well. The second student came a few minutes late, and had to leave after half of the class. That was a little sad honestly. After school, I finished up. I had a bit to do today. Some filing, some paperwork and some prepping.

Fumihiko picked me up and we came home. I went into kitchen mode soon after I did and began cooking. Fumihiko didn't help with a lot of things, but he did translate the instructions a bit so that was nice. I did pasta tonight. We started with a bit of gnocchi, and then after that some spaghettini with carbonara sauce. I also cleaned out the veggie box in the fridge and did a stirfy of zucchini, eggplant and carrot in mostly olive oil. The stirfry was pretty good. I overcooked the spaghettini, but it was still good. The big problem about meals with my hub is that he won't sit down and eat. I keep telling him to and he keeps ignoring me. I hate cold food, but he doesn't mind it. Bleck.

He did the dishes tonight and then took a shower before American Idol. Tonight's show was okay. I think the right people got kicked out, but we'll see about next week. After the show, Fumihiko put on some boxing/kickboxing crap. I wasn't pleased, but at least he asked me first.

When he picked me up tonight he told me that he'd taken tomorrow off so that he could see the doctor. I honestly wasn't happy about it as I'd planned a day of shopping by myself at the mall. He has no idea why I'm not overjoyed to have him along. I've tried to explain that he follows me around like a puppy, has no opinion about anything and looks extremely bored all the time, so it isn't fun for me at all.

However, if he manages to get to the doctor early enough, we might go and see the new Russell baby movie that I've been hoping to see, so that would be good. It's Ladies Day at the theatre tomorrow too, so would be cheaper for me. Found out that Star Trek starts this coming weekend so want to be up for that.

Anyway, that's it for now. I'll try to update tomorrow. Night.

May 25, 2009 - Monday

Sunny, then cloudy with a little rain.

Didn't really have an exciting day today so thought I'd just share a few bits and bobs from the last few weeks that I haven't blogged about.

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished!
Last month after Fumihiko came home from the hospital it was cherry blossom season. One day he took me out on a drive to look at the blossoms and we wound up near the Akagawa river. We went for a walk under the trees and I spotted something on the ground. It was a camera memory disk. I have one for my camera, but mine has much less memory. There was a guy nearby with a snazzy camera so we asked if it was his, but it wasn't. I took it home with me that night. I tried it in my camera first. I could see some of the photos, but the screen is very small. I tried putting it onto my computer, and then we could see the photos. They were mostly of buildings, so Fumihiko thought that the disk might belong to a builder or architect. Then, I found a photo of a group of people and he knew who one of the people was. Anyway, to cut this long tale a bit, we got the disk back to the owner. It was a woman. Being Japanese, she sent Fumihiko some pickles. Then, hubby's sister spent last night sending him emails to get him to call the lady back to say thank you. He doesn't know her and he doesn't know her phone number.

And I'd just like to point out to everybody that _I_ found the darn thing in the first place, so shouldn't _I_ be getting the present?

Foreigner Bonanza
So far in May I have met and talked with 9 other foreigners. It's a huge number for just one month. I'm really quite surprised. Today, Fumihiko and I were walking to the park when we bumped into the Mormon Missionaries on their way to the park. We stood and chatted for a few minutes.

Tenjin Matsuri

Today is the Tenjin Matsuri. There was a parade, but I didn't go. After his work, Fumihiko asked me if I wanted to go and see the shops so I said sure. We walked to the park and had fun looking at all the junk on offer. As usual there were lots of foods there. There was one stall that I was tempted to buy from, as they were selling Donairs. I haven't had one in years. It looked pretty authentic too. Fumihiko offered to go back and get me one, but I declined. May be silly, but I'm too afraid of getting food poisoning or something to risk it. I can't eat the same way I did when I was younger.

Tidbits
Fumihiko has started making us iced coffee to drink again. That's a sure sign that it's almost summer. However, it was quite cold today!

American Idol has finished and the winner's name is plastered everywhere on the internet. It's very annoying considering that the channel we're watching it on is close to the beginning.

Anyway, speaking of American Idol, I'm going to go and watch it now. I might finish off my clapochet too tonight. I could use it tonight, it's still cool.

So that's it. Consider yourself having read my blog. Got to go. Idol is on in 4 minutes. Bye!

May 24, 2009 - Sunday

Cloudy with a bit of rain.

Today was a good day. I got up later than I planned, but Fumihiko was just vegging on the couch and didn't mind. We went out for lunch to a Japanese place he likes. Lunch was okay, not great. We both had udon with tempura. I find the tempura at this place to be quite greasy.

During lunch we discussed getting more episodes of Lost, so that's what we did. We drove to another DVD rental place and Fumihiko got himself a new card, plus the next two dvds of Lost. On the way home we stopped in the craft shop and I got myself a membership there. I'm not really sure why after all, as it wasn't free. That must have been what the ladies were telling me last year! Hopefully I'll use the card a bit.

We came home and watched episodes five and six, then took a break fror dinner. We went to Grado. I had fish and Fumihiko had the meat special which he said was too big for him, so he gave me half of his chicken. We did a grocery shop afterwards, then came home and watched episodes seven and eight of Lost.

After all that Fumihiko has gone to bed and is snoring away. He did go to the Sunday doctor today for his asthma. He's been wheezing away for the last couple of days and finally I made him go today. I guess I do send people to the doctor if I have to!

Tomorrow is the Tenjin Matsuri in Tsuruoka. I'm not sure if I'll go or not. I don't have anyone to watch the parade with, so it's a bit sad. Tune in tomorrow to find out what I do...Night!

May 23, 2009 - Saturday

Rainy, muggy and cloudy all day.

Had a different sort of day than I expected, but in a good way.

This morning I got up around 9, showered and then watched Criminal Minds. I'd actually seen this episode when I was in Canada last year, but I hadn't really understood it because it was a huge time leap forward from what I had seen. It was good. Fumihiko and I decided to go to a different place for brunch, so we went to Cocos. It's a bit further from my school than Gusto, but we were leaving on time instead of a little late, so thought it would be okay. Brunch was nice.

My class went well. There was no blood loss in today's class. Hurray for that. After class I did paperwork, set up for Tuesday's first class and read the newspaper and a bit of Twilight.

When Fumihiko came to get me we went to S-Mall and I got my glasses fixed. I bent them somehow, so they didn't really sit straight on my nose. The guy took a few minutes fixing them, then he washed and polished them for me. He didn't charge me for doing it either. Wow. I felt really guilty as I had bought my glasses in Canada, so it wasn't even a warranty call for him. However, hubby and I do get most of our jewelry fixed there so maybe because of that?

We had coffee and a snack and then went upstairs to look at the dvd shop. We hacked around and wound up in the TV section. I'd watched Lost last night, and there were a couple of the boxed sets of Lost sitting on the shelf. I didn't think much about it, but while we were walking out of the store, Fumihiko said he wanted to watch Lost from the beginning to see what happened. He thought it would be fun to rent it. I was shocked! We never rent dvds. I thought it was a good idea too, so it was off to the DVD store with us.

We rented two dvds of Lost, so basically the first 4 episodes. They were great. We really enjoyed them all. We watched the pilot disc then took a break for dinner. After we watched the rest. Fun. Hubby even said that he'd like to go out and get more discs but I think he was joking!

Dinner was at Jiro, and it was nice. We had the Mixed Gri-ei. Yum.

So, tonight we watched 4 hours of Lost, then I watched Heroes after midnight. I think that was the end of the second season tonight. Later I watched Peep Show which was so so.

Both of us are feeling better. Fumihiko doesn't sound great and he has a nasty cough, but overall he's a bit better. I felt quite good today. It wasn't a very stressful day and that was fine with me.

That's it for me. Night.

May 22, 2009 - Friday

Cloudy and rainy.

An okay day. I woke up this morning and got up. I had a horrible headache so couldn't decide if I should go back to bed and try to sleep it off. I decided not to. I got up, showered, played on my computer and watched the taped TV that I had. I watched Re:Genesis again and enjoyed it. Today David wasn't railing about the US Government, he was complaining about the Quebec situation. It's cool to watch a show that even acknowledges that Canada has a French Province. Then I watched the last episode of Wallander. Oh my gosh. It was really good, but so very depressing. It must be the whole "Swedish" thing. However, it was really good, and it reminded me why Kenneth has remained one of my favourite actors.

In the afternoon I had lunch and then headed off to my school. I made good time and set up. After that, I took a break, read the newspaper and got stuck into Twilight. Yep, I'm reading it. A good friend of mine told me that she really enjoyed it, so I'm giving it a shot. So far, so good. (The storyline so far reminds me of Roswell though. I wonder which came first?) I was drinking a cup of iced coffee while I was reading, when I opened my mouth to get a piece of ice. I didn't realize there was still quite a bit of coffee in the mug and it ended up all over my shirt. Sigh. Good thing I keep spares at the school.

When my student came, we worked on our lesson. He was really tired though, so we had to take little breaks to wake him up. At one point in the lesson I put my hand on the edge of my chair and impaled myself on something. My finger started bleeding. I thought it wasn't bad so didn't pay much attention, but then I noticed that blood was all over my hand. I grabbed a tissue and wrapped my finger up in it, but it didn't stop. My student saw I was bleeding and for some reason decided to pick a scab that he had on his arm. It started bleeding too. He put a tissue on his. Then, I asked him if he'd like a bandaid and we each got one. We put them on ourselves, so there was no exchange of blood or anything. I don't really want this student as my "blood brother"!

Fumihiko picked me up and took me to New York, New York for dinner. He's not doing well. He has a nasty cough and his voice is very strained. He was wondering if he had pneumonia, but I don't think he does. I guess it is possible.

We watched a bit of TV together and then at 1 ish I got him to put on Lost. It took a while to get it in English, but he finally managed. I'm still confused, but it's fun figuring things out.

Anyway, that's me for tonight. Hopefully we'll have a quiet day tomorrow. Hubby is not feeling well and I have a class early on, then I'm done. We'll probably stay at home in the afternoon.

Night.

May 21, 2009 - Thursday

Sunny then cloudy.

Today was quite a good day. I got up on time, showered quite early and then went out to the post office to mail off the coat. After that, I went to a convenience store and got a sandwich for my breakfast. I came home and ate it, plus did a lot of laundry. I did three loads of my stuff, and I also watched Wallander again. Kenneth baby is very good in it. Terribly worldly weary. Not the firebrand that he was in Hamlet or Much Ado.

In the afternoon I was delighted to find out that Cold Case was back on. Even though they are repeats, I still get verklempt at the show. I rode off to work and made good time. The only bad spot was just as I got near my school, a small bug flew in my eye. Ouch. It took me about 20 minutes to get it all out. It was a stubborn little sucker. My eye still feels a bit sore. I hope I didn't scratch it or anything.

I had two classes tonight and they both went fairly well. However, the students were all late! The second class was more than 20 minutes late, so I wasn't able to teach the song. I did introduce the target language though and gave them some homework to do every day. I asked them to keep a weather diary for the next week. Yay me.

After work, I took my time finishing up. Fumihiko had told me that he was going to be working late tonight, so I finished my book, did the dishes, paperwork and relaxed. Then, around 9 pm I sent him an email just to check if he was still working. He phoned me back right away. He was done. In fact, he'd been done since 6 pm. Sigh. He sounded awful however. His voice was all scratchy and he said he didn't feel well. Dear oh dear. He apologized for not calling me earlier but it didn't really matter that much to me.

At home, I got busy again. Tonight was leftover night! I didn't know how it would go down with him, he's a little bit fussy about not having the same thing over again. However, it was fine. I sauteed the leftover new potatoes in some olive oil and dill, added in a little bit of carrot and mushroom from the other veggies, sliced the cold meat, heated the gravy and the veggies and made tea. Whew. He ate everything on his plate. Yay. It was rather nice to eat at home on a Thursday. Usually I don't finish teaching until 9 and then it's another hour or so until I'm done, so tonight was a treat.

I did the dishes. I was a little miffed that Fumihiko didn't even offer to do the dishes. He usually does them when I cook. I wouldn't have let him do them tonight, but it was a bit of a surprise.

We had a really quiet evening in. Hubby went to bed rather early and is now not so quiet! I'll probably go to bed soon too. I just hope that I don't get whatever it is that he has. I don't need it at all. Neither does he, come to think! But then again, he gets sick pay, I don't.

Anyway, I have to run. Talk to you tomorrow night. Night!

May 20, 2009 - Wednesday

Sunny and gorgeous day.

I got up this morning at a reasonable time and didn't go back to bed, even though I wanted to. Yay me. I sent DH an email reminding him to call the restaurant to see if our friend had left his jacket there last week. He had.

After watching Kenneth Branagh's Wallander and making a print of a photograph, I went over to the restaurant and picked up my friend's jacket. He'd left it there last week. Sigh. I gave the cook the photograph that I printed as a sort of thank you. It was a picture of the cook in action.

I had lunch in Marumatsu, across the street. It was okay, not great. The good things were the restaurant is quiet and the food is cheap. I read a bit more of my book while I was there. I'm currently in the midst of The Mirror of Her Dreams by Stephen R. Donaldson. I really like it. I read it before when I was in college and it still stands up. Thing is, I don't have the second part. What should I do? I'm thinking Bookmooch, but I have such a backlog of books that I really shouldn't!

I came home and Fumihiko was home a little later.

We went for dinner and we were halfway out of the driveway when Fumihiko suggested another place. He suggested Fireball, a restaurant that we hadn't tried yet. It sounded good to me, so that's where we went. We had two kinds of pasta and swapped them, plus salad, soup, dessert and drink bar, so it wasn't bad for price. The pasta was good too. I especially liked mine. I had chicken and vegetables in a tomato cream sauce. Yum. Usually I'm not a fan of tomato based sauces, but this one was nice. I would definitely go there again. The only bad thing about the restaurant was the terrible music. It was horrible rap music. I have one friend who might like it (and you know who you are!) but I hated it. It didn't fit the food or even the atmosphere.

We came home via the grocery store for milk and then watched Desperate Housewives. It was rather interesting tonight. Many things happened, but I can't tell you what.

That was that. Fumihiko sneaked off to bed just after midnight. He sometimes does that. Leaves the room and doesn't turn off the TV. He was the last one watching it, not me.

Tomorrow I'll have to run to the post office to send off my friend's jacket, and then I'll have work in the evening. We'll have leftovers for dinner too. I'll have to magically transform them into something that hubby will eat. Or, I could just tell him that it's leftovers or nothing. :-)

Night.

May 19, 2009 - Tuesday

Hot and sunny.

Today was a better day. I got up this morning, showered and then got to work on dinner! Yes, I was busy compared to usual. I prepared a pork roast in my slow cooker for tonight. I had a recipe in my low-carb cookbook for Pork Roast with Cabbage that I had nearly all the ingredients for. The ingredients that I didn't have I could either substitute things for (tinned onion soup for dry onion soup mix plus water) or leave out (celery). I put everything together and then prepared the cabbage for later. I left Fumihiko a big note asking him to put the cabbage in at 7:00 pm.

I ate my lunch and then went off to work. I made good time and did a spot of cleaning in the school before teaching. My first lesson went quite well, and we had fun. I taught the student how to play hangman.

I had a big break in the middle of my classes so decided to go out and get a snack for later. I rode off and went to the 7-11. I got some stick veggies and a burrito, then visited the drugstore before going back to the school. I read newspapers and then a bit of my book before my next two classes. I was really happy tonight that the person I scheduled for 6 pm could come tonight. We had an enjoyable class, and she'll come again this week for good measure.

My last class of the day went well too. We finished the lesson we were on and had time for some chatting as well.

I had sent Fumihiko a message earlier in the day that I wanted him to call me when he was done work. He called just after his quitting time, and I gave him instructions about the crockpot. I wanted him to put the cabbage in the crockpot. He said he would. He did! Yay.

When I got home tonight, I had to get busy again. I washed the new potatoes that we got last night, and I cooked them, I made coffee, set the table and also made gravy in the slow cooker. When we ate, everything was very good. The meat was really tender, the sauce was nice and the veggies were perfect. The cabbage kept a bit of its crunch, and the carrots and mushrooms were nice. Yay me.

Fumihiko did the dishes which was very nice of him. I can't really watch him when he does them though because we have very different styles. I use the hottest water I can handle, and start with cleanest dishes first. He uses lukewarm water and throws everything in the basin, even the sharp knives which gives me the shivers.

We settled in to watch American Idol at 11. It was the who made it to the top 12 and then the wild card show. It was rather fun. Glad I'm not a judge on the show.

Fumihiko went to bed a bit later. He seemed in an odd mood. He was grumpy but kept saying he wasn't. Hope he's okay. His neck is bothering him a bit now. The weather is so changeable that it affects him.

Anyway, I'm off work tomorrow. I have a Kenneth Branagh detective show to watch that I'm looking forward to, and then maybe I'll do something that's fun? Maybe. Got to go. Night.

May 18, 2009 - Monday

Thundery in the night, gorgeous during the day.

Well, today is over, and that's almost the best that can be said about it.

I got up late and of course there wasn't any news on. However, there was a Jason Statham movie on, so I watched that. I had missed the beginning so I didn't understand a lot, but any chance to gaze at Jason Statham (especially with hair) shouldn't be missed!

The film was halfway through when I got an email from my husband. He was going to take the afternoon off. On my day off. Sigh. I wasn't best pleased. With our visitors last week, I hadn't really had much time to myself in days and was looking forward to a bit.

When he came home, he didn't really have any plans beyond going to see his doctor later on, so I grabbed my purse and told him I was going to the bank and I'd see him later. He was a bit surprised and offered to drive me. He took me to two banks to do school business and then personal stuff. In both he stayed in the car, which was basically what I hoped he'd do! I got through the first banking experience easily, it just took a long time. The second one was in a brand new, spacey building. It had a touch screen to check in and get your number. Yet another "don't want foreigners as customers" feature. It was all in kanji. Why not more katakana? I asked a bank worker for help and she did, but I had to wait for a while. I needed to update my passbook and get a new one. I had tried to update my passbook at the machine, but it didn't work. I had no idea how to say that in Nihongo.

Anyway, after I finished, Fumihiko said, "Maybe I should have come in with you?" Mmm. Maybe. But I managed.

We had a quick Gusto lunch, then DH dropped me off at S-Mall while he went to the doctor. I hacked around. I bought coat hangers in the hundred yen shop and nothing in the dvd shop. When Fumihiko made it back to the mall, we had tea in Doutors.

Home again, Fumihiko had a nap and then after 7 we went out for dinner. We went to Kintaro Sushi, the revolving sushi place that we like. It wasn't busy so we were able to seat ourselves anywhere we liked and got down to the serious business of eating. After a couple plates of sushi, the family that had been sitting near me left and then a man came and sat down next to me. I was a bit surprised, but because it often happens there didn't think much of it. I tried to move my "stuff" out of his way, but was a bit surprised when he reached over in front of me to grab the soy sauce (which he didn't return). There was a bottle of soy sauce on his other side that wasn't near anyone at all. He leaned over in front of me to grab a plate of sushi. I was a bit put out, but know that a lot of older Japanese men think they are entitled so didn't say too much. I was watching the belt for interesting sushi when I heard, "Where do you from?"(sic). I asked why, but he didn't understand that. Finally I said "Canada." Then he started talking about The Toronto Blue Eyes. I said, "The Toronto Blue Jays?" Apparently he liked them. I just nodded and looked away.

Obviously this person had no idea where I'm from. I've only ever been in the Toronto airport. I'm from the west part of Canada, the part that doesn't like Toronto, and I DO NOT LIKE BASEBALL. So, he managed to put me on edge, make me angry and insult me, all in one go. Great stuff.

I told my husband that I had lost my appetite and that I was ready to go anytime he was. However, the strange guy left first. I think he might only have had one plate of sushi! Perhaps he thought I insulted him? Aww, too bad, so sad. The people at Kintaro don't even think anything about hubby and I going there. I know when I used to go there alone when I first came to Japan they were nervous because they didn't know if I could order sushi by myself (I could), but I'm a fairly regular customer now and they don't single me out. I've always felt comfortable there. Now, who knows. I really don't understand why people feel it's okay to come up to me and just start talking to me. They don't do it with other Japanese people....foreigners are somehow special? The rules don't apply?

We came home via the grocery store. I found a rather large pork roast, so I'll set it up in my slow cooker before work tomorrow.

At home Fumihiko found America's Sweethearts on TV so we watched that. John Cusack is always fun, so I enjoyed it. Afterwards, we nestled in on the couch to watch American Idol. I think Fumihiko watches it just to hear what Simon has to say. We're still at the beginning on the channel that we watch. I finished making my clapochet while I was watching. The only thing I was wondering was if I should rip it out and re-do it. But, I think I'll leave it for now. I'll have to start darning in the ends soon.

And that's it. My day. Glad it's over. Night.

May 17, 2009 - Sunday

Cloudy and rainy all day.

Today was a pretty good day. I went to bed late as is my wont, but managed to get up before 12. I thought I was doing well. However, dear husband was up before 7 am. I'm not sure why he got up, all he did was sit on the couch, watch bad TV and play computer games. He was supposed to get a hair cut!

When I got up, we decided to go to Bistro des Pointes for lunch. We drove out there and had a lovely 3 course meal. For me, the only downpoint was the banana ice cream that was served with dessert, but even it wasn't too bad.

We went to the mall and hacked around for a while. I'm starting to look at clothes for a certain niece of mine, but I had DH hanging around my neck all the time. He's a nice guy, but really not good at shopping. Although he says that he's having fun, the bored look on his face tells a different story. I wish he'd bug off for a few minutes and let me have some alone time. After getting tired of not finding anything I liked, I wanted to check out the craft section. While we were there, we ran into Chris and then Yumiko. We had a little chat with them.

Downstairs in the electronic department I found some dvds on for low cost, so I bought them! I got Zoolander and In Her Shoes. Zoolander is funny, and In Her Shoes is really good. The novel was better, but the movie is good too.

We had drinks at the coffee shop and on the way to buy our tickets ran into John and his wife. It was a veritable bumping into of Sakata school owners today.

Fumihiko wanted to have something to eat before the movie. I'm not sure why. I was still nicely full from our gorgeous lunch, plus I was anticipating the popcorn I was going to buy later. He really wanted something, so I sent him off for ramen. I window shopped and enjoyed myself. We met up again, and went to see Angels and Demons.

The movie wasn't terrible, it just wasn't that great! I called it a popcorn movie, and that's sort of what it was. It was exciting enough that you would keep eating popcorn, but not exciting enough that you wouldn't notice there was no butter on the popcorn. Sigh. Tom Hanks' hair was much better in this film, but they really missed on having someone like Ian McKellen chewing the scenery. Ewan McGregor tried, but I keep thinking of him as Obi-wan!

After the movie, Fumihiko was hungry again. Gah. We ended up going to New York, New York. I had chicken which was rather nice. I skipped the salad and just had drink bar with my meal. Fumihiko had curry and rice.

We came home and had a quiet evening. I made him watch Peep Show with me. It's a new British Comedy that we've just started to get. Lots of bad language. Hubster likes it more than Little Britain, I'm not sure yet.

Anyway, that's about it for me. If the weather clears tomorrow I'll go out and pay a bill, if not, I may just make soup! I've been threatening to do that for a while now. Got to go. Night!

May 16, 2009 - Saturday

Cloudy and cool, no rain though.

Today wasn't the usual Saturday morning at home. It was interesting! Fumihiko had to go back to hospital today to have a check up. So, after I showered this morning, we went out for breakfast at Cocos. He brought me back home and then went off on his way. Then, I watched Criminal Minds before biking off to my school.

I had a good day at the school. I had 3 classes. The first one went well as always. The student is very motivated and a joy to teach. I had a long gap in the middle so I did some lesson planning and then went out to grab a sandwich. When I came back to the school I read the newspaper and ate my food.

My third class went well, but my second class was only okay. The student in that one seems to "fight" me a lot. I don't mean that we argue or anything, it's just that we don't connect on a meaningful level. For example, today I told her that we'd talk about the past continuous. She asked me if it was possible to say "present continuous". Of course, I said it was, but today we were studying the past continuous NOT the present continuous. She teaches grammar herself, so these terms are not completely unknown to her. I didn't really understand what her point was. Anyway, we got through it. She's a nice enough person, but I'm still having problems understanding her.

After my classes, I finished up my paperwork, did the dishes and called Fumihiko. He'd sent me a message that he was back home. Wow. I hope he didn't speed all the way home!

He picked me up and we spent a bit of time at home before going out to dinner. For dinner we went to Grado. I had the meat special which was interesting, and Fumihiko had a doria in a bamboo root. Also interesting. It wasn't what I thought it would be.

We came home and Fumihiko watched a bit of Japanese TV before I took over the TV at 12 to watch Private Practice and then Heroes. Fumihiko went to bed ages ago.

Tomorrow we'll probably see Angels and Demons and apart from that, I have no idea. Wish me luck eh? Night night.

May 15, 2009 - Friday

Sunny but cool.

A good day. I was really tired in the morning, so I treated myself to a little extra lie in. I probably won't get one for the next few days anyway.

I had a bit of a relaxing day for part of the time. I watched Re:Genesis and later on did some housework. I vacuumed a bit and did some other odd jobs around the apartment.

After my lunch I left for work. I went via the drug store. It was nice bicycling tonight, except there were a lot of cars around for a change. Sigh.

My class tonight went rather well and afterwards I finished up and then called my husband to come and get me. He did. We stopped off at the grocery store for milk and then came home.

We had yakiniku for dinner. We had lots of veggies too, so it was fairly healthy. It was delicious.

We had a quiet evening. I listened to some podcasts, while Fumihiko watched some crap on TV. Around 1 he found Lost on the TV and then went to bed. I stayed up watching Lost.

Tomorrow I'm off to my school, and he's off to Koriyama for a checkup. I'm a bit worried about him as it's a long way to drive in one day. Still, he wanted to do it all in one shot.

That's it for me. I'm out of here. Night.

May 14, 2009 - Thursday

Rainy, clearing, sunny, and rainy and cold again.

The last two days were great. Our friends Taeko and James came up to visit us and they brought their son Alex as well. I'm not much of a baby person, but Alex was a really happy little boy and didn't cry much at all.

Over the last two days we did a lot of local tourist things. On Wednesday after lunch we took them to Zenpoji Temple where we walked around and climbed up the steep steps. We also went to a couple of "Ash-i-yu" or foot baths. The first one we went to was great, the second wasn't as good, mostly because of wind. The first one was sheltered, the second one wasn't. We had dinner in Fumihiko's favourite soba restaurant last night and it was very nice. The owner gave us all free ice cream at the end, and really went out of his way to arrange the tables for us so that we could relax and let Alex lie on the tatami.

Today, Fumihiko and I tried to have breakfast at McDonalds but they had stopped serving it by the time we got there. Boo. Not fair! We met up with Taeko and James and drove to Chokai No Mori. It's a hill in Sakata with gorgeous views. We got up there, but in places it was terribly windy so we ended up going into the onsen part and having drinks at the restaurant.

We drove back into Tsuruoka and had lunch at Aki, the okonomiyaki restaurant that we like so much. It was great, and the owner went out of his way to make us feel welcome. We got soup, pickled salad and coffee at the end too. James had taken a picture of him making our lunch, so maybe the owner was doing his bit for Japanese tourism? The ladies in the restaurant, staff and customers were making a big fuss over Alex too.

Sadly, after lunch, James and Taeko had to leave. I offered to keep Alex for them, but they didn't think it was a good idea. And, frankly, neither did I really. He's cute, but....

After they left, I did a quick clean up of the school and Fumihiko loaded up the car with the futons and blankets. We came home for a bit. He washed the sheets and pillow cases, and I hung them up to dry. We'll return those bits to his Mum in a few days. I'll have to remember to get her a nice treat for lending them to us.

At 5 pm, I got Fumihiko to take me back to the school. I had to work. I spent a bit more time on my tidying up, only to have my first student cancel on me. She was sick, poor thing. She really sounded sick on the phone, so I was happy that she stayed away. My children's class of the day had cancelled earlier in the week, so I only had one class after all. It went quite well, and we talked about my visitors and also studied a little English!

Fumihiko picked me up tonight and we went to Moku-Moku for dinner. It was quite nice. The weather was bad at this point and so we didn't have much company in the restaurant. That was fine by me.

We decided to have dinner at home tomorrow night. We got the fixings to make yakiniku, so it'll be simple at least.

And that was it for our day. I am quite tired so I really should get off to bed. I may have picked up Taeko's cold, but I'm hoping to fight it off.

Night!

May 12, 2009 - Tuesday

Muggy and cloudy early in the day, rainy at night.

An okay day. I got up a couple of times this morning. I got up when Fumihiko was still here. After he left I had coffee and watched the US news. I was thrilled. I went back to bed, but a student emailed me cancelling for later in the week. Sigh.

I got up, showered and then got on with my day. I made radish roses because I hadn't bought radishes in the 12 years that I've been living here and it seemed like the thing to do!

I had my lunch and then headed out to work. I made good time and got there only a little later than I should have! I got busy.

My classes went well, except one student won't come for a whole month after today. I told his mother that if she'd told me I'd have been able to give him a bit of homework for his time away. It's very annoying really. I'm not going to say he can't take the time off, it's because of a school function, I just would like to work on my scheduling. Ack. In between my last two classes I put the timer on and cleaned the bath. I used toothpaste as it was the only thing I had on hand! Worked a treat.

After my last class, I went back to the bathroom and cleaned the room. It wasn't dirty or anything, just dusty and a bit neglected. It's quite nice now. I finished up my paperwork and also my dishes, then called Fumihiko.

He came to get me and we came home. At home, he made us some lovely iced tea, and then after I checked my email, I cooked dinner. We had salad, spicy chicken wings and hash browns. Yummy. I had an unfortunate accident with the radish roses before dinner and two of them went flying. Sigh. I was quite upset.

Fumihiko did the dishes and then we settled in for the night. American Idol part 2 was on tonight so we snuggled up on the chesterfield and watched that. It was okay. While he took a bath I watched a couple of shows about Stila make-up and fancy restaurants in New York. Oh, maybe that's why I'm hungry now!

Not sure if I'll blog tomorrow night or not. We're having visitors tomorrow and it depends what we do with them and where we go. If you don't hear from me, don't worry!

Night.

May 11, 2009 - Monday

Cloudy and muggy day.

I couldn't get up this morning. I tried very hard, and did get out of bed. I watched a few minutes of Bewitched before falling asleep on the couch. It was nice to be able to nap and not have to worry though.

Later I woke up and had coffee, followed by lots of computer time. I did have a bookmooch request today, so in the afternoon I got the book ready to mail. I was just about to leave the apartment when I got a phone call from my friend that's coming to visit us on Wednesday. We chatted and it was really nice.

I made a quick run to the post office, mailed off my books and arrived home to find that my incoming bookmooch had arrived! Two Alistair Maclean novels. Hurray. I put them on my increasing pile of books. I have to stop mooching from other people for a bit. I don't mind if they mooch from me though.

Fumihiko came home a bit late tonight and played around on his computer for a bit. We went out for dinner to Framboise. It was nice tonight. I had steak, he had the Japanese special. We came home via the grocery store to get some food for tomorrow night. I bought a few radishes, think I'll try and make roses tomorrow! Haven't done that in years.

We watched American Idol tonight. I did quite a bit of my crochet, but I have a bit of a problem. My count is out. I'll check the line before tomorrow, but I may have to rip some of it out. Sigh. Still, it's looking very nice. The only thing is that I think my clapochet is going to be a touch too short. Sigh. I'm running out of wool and I bought all the balls that they had in that dye lot, so I'm out of luck.

Well, that's it for me. I'm out of here. Tomorrow I have work, starting in the afternoon. I need some beauty sleep for it, so I'm out of here. Night!
