March 31, 2009 - Tuesday

A mostly good day. I had to get up early today because the news was on early. That's actually a good thing and it was nice to be up early.

I had a good morning, quiet but good. When it came time to make lunch I had a good one. My (should be) World Famous Taco Omelette. Yummy.

Work was fine today. I had two classes today and they both went well. My first student didn't want to leave, she stayed and chatted for a bit. My second student was a bit late, so we only had a short time to talk.

Fumihiko picked me up and then took me home. He spent another couple of hours working on apartment stuff. Finally, I decided to just start cooking by myself. I cooked co-ro co-ro steak that I had marinated in Worchestershire sauce, put out the salad, and then cooked a couple of hash browns for each of us. We had coffee as well. It was very yummy.

Fumihiko did the dishes and I vegged for a while.

We had a quiet evening at home after that. It was nice. So, today was good.

I'm not sure if I'll update tomorrow night or not. We're leaving early on Thursday for Koriyama. I'm planning to take my computer, but won't be updating until I get back, if then. I'll see how it goes. I'll be back on Monday if all goes well.

Night night!

March 30, 2009 - Monday

Sunny and warmish.

I had a good morning, although I woke up early because I was cold. I discovered that I'd kicked all the covers off my bed. I got up, turned on the heater, checked out the TV news and then went back to bed. I got up quite a bit later.

The video that I used to tape my weekend TV on had a problem. I couldn't get it to work. It wouldn't rewind, fast forward or play. Oh no. I checked out my friend the internet, got a few solutions, but basically ended up rewinding the tape a fair bit by hand, then trying it. It worked thankfully. I was able to watch CSI New York, and some other things. Whew. I read the newspaper and got a gift for my nephew ready to mail. I putzed around the apartment, but around 2:30 decided it was now or never, so I went out.

I went to the bank first, paid a water bill and got my passbook updated. Then, I headed to the post office where I mailed off my package to my nephew. After that, I got a few things from Sunkus and came home.

I had a quiet afternoon by myself. When Fumihiko came home, I was watching Penelope. He barely talked to me, mumbled something about having to work for the apartment stuff and then put his head down and didn't come up for air for ages.

A bit after 8 I decided that I was getting hungry so I started making dinner. I had a plan, so I knew what I was doing and it wasn't bad. I chopped the tomatoes, shredded the lettuce, set up the coffee pot and then finally got the taco mix on the stove. Everything turned out well and Fumihiko was nearly finished anyway when dinner was ready. We had a yummy meal. Our taco shells were a bit of a letdown though. When we warmed them, they closed! Mine was impossible to re-open, so I smooshed it up and made a taco salad that was to die for!

Fumihiko did the dishes, and then we went out to my school. I set the heater in the school for tomorrow. It wasn't really cold in there, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Then, we got a few more groceries from the store.

Our evening has been really quiet. Fumihiko did some translating for me for a student's mother and then I let him test out my mouse on his computer. I hate his mouse and have decided that he MUST get a new one. His is really slow and it isn't cordless. Mine is cordless and really snazzy.

Well, anyway, that's it for my day. It was pretty good, all told. I would have liked to spend more time with my husband, but didn't get to. Hopefully tomorrow he won't have so much work to do. Gotta go! Night.

March 29, 2009 - Sunday

Sunny but cold.

I got up this morning for a quick trip to the loo and looked outside. The world was white. Sigh. Over the rest of the day however, most of the snow melted. There is still a bit in places that are shady, but most of it is gone. It is still rather cold outside.

We had a relaxing morning. I slept in as usual, but Fumihiko didn't seem to get annoyed with me. We went out for sushi for lunch, then came back home. He was busy with "apartment management" things.

He left a little after 6 to go to his meeting, and came back quite late. I was a little surprised how long he was. It was well after 8 before he came back. He'd eaten a bit, and also brought some food home for later.

I hadn't eaten though, so I requested a real izakaya, and that's where we went. It's near the sushi restaurant, so really I didn't travel that far today. We had quite a nice mixture of dishes. Fumihiko suggested some sashimi, but I reminded him that we had sushi for lunch so he agreed that we didn't need more fish. He ordered it anyway. Then seemed a little hurt when I didn't want any. He had forgotten his wallet, so I paid the bill.

We went to the grocery store afterward and got a few things. I think I'll make dinner tomorrow night. That's the plan at the moment anyway.

When we came home, Fumihiko did pay me back, so I'm not broke anymore. We also talked about watching a movie. My friend had sent me Atonement on DVD from Canada, but it was on WOWOW tonight. It was his chance to see it with subtitles if he wanted to. He said he didn't need them, and we didn't watch the movie. Sigh. I'm a bit glad as the book, while wonderfully written, was quite sad. I didn't need that before bed on a Sunday night really.

After Fumihiko went to bed I got the garbage all ready for him to take out in the morning, and set up the coffee pot for us. Oh what fun.

I can hear noises from the bedroom that tell me my husband isn't sleeping yet. It really gets on my nerves. I try to put off blogging until he's asleep, so I can have some calm time, but it doesn't always work.

Anyway, I had better go. I don't want this to turn into a rant about my husband. He was very nice today, so I want to keep him like that!

Night.

March 28, 2009 - Saturday

Snow. That is not a typo.

Had a good but fairly busy day today. I got up and watched news and made the bed. I showered early, then watched Criminal Minds. It was quite a violent one and I didn't really like it that much.

Fumihiko and I bought me a couple of things at 7-11 and then had breakfast at Gusto. It was okay. He dropped me off at my school and I got on with my day.

My classes went quite well today. I had three after all, since one student had to cancel at the last moment. The class that I usually have a bit of difficult with was pretty good for a change. Hurray.

After my classes Fumihiko picked me up and took me off to the restaurant that we went to for lunch a couple of weeks ago. The food we had was lovely, but it was served more like a izakaya. We ordered a salad, and then an entree each. Well, Fumihiko's entree arrived about 30 minutes before mine. After that, though, we had dessert and it was wonderful. It was really yummy.

When Fumihiko picked me up at the school I was surprised to see that there was quite a bit of snow outside. By the time we finished our meal, it was quite snowy outside. There was enough that Fumihiko had to sweep off the windows before we could drive off home.

At home we relaxed a bit, watched some TV and vegged out. Fumihiko had done a lot of work for the apartment building tonight. I had to print some of it out for him. We watched Heroes and also Project Runway Both were rather cool.

That's about it for our night. I'm a bit tired and it's very late, so I should go to bed soon. Night night!

It's back!

We've had at least 5 cm of snow tonight, and it IS staying this time. Sorry about the poor quality of the picture, just wanted to let you all see what's outside. Sigh. More later!

PS...I call this The Lantern Waste!

March 27, 2009 - Friday

Sunny but cool early on, raining and a little snowy at night.

I realized part-way through the day that today was the twelfth anniversary of the day that I arrived in Japan. I didn't make it up to Tsuruoka that day, mostly due to my company's strange plan for me, but it was an interesting experience.

When I arrived in Japan, I think our flight was a little late. Plus, as I was coming in for the first time, it took about 2 hours to go through Immigration at the airport. When I got through that, and cleared Customs, I put my bags into the delivery service. There was also a long line for that. I waited in line with two other women who had come over with our company. Finally I got the bags sent and went to buy the bus ticket to go over to the Haneda airport. The woman told me that as my plane was leaving in two hours I might not make it. Oh my gosh. What should I do?

I called the company office in Sapporo (yes, I was organized enough to bring all the phone numbers with me) and asked what to do. They told me to go over to Haneda, change my plane ticket and get a hotel. No problem, right? Made it over to Haneda without trouble, changed my ticket easily, but...the hotel? I was so tired after 9 hours on the plane I asked my company if I could just sleep in the airport. They were horrified and said no. The person in Sapporo told me that they would find me a hotel and I should phone back in 15 minutes.

15 minutes later, they had found a hotel. I made my way over there and checked in. It was horrendously expensive. It was well over 20, 000 yen, probably close to 30, 000 yen per night and was gorgeous. The taxi was 4000 yen, so I was getting nervous about money. I was shown to my room, which was gorgeous, by a bellman that only spoke Japanese. It was now close to 10 pm and I hadn't eaten since 2 or 3 pm on the airplane. The restaurants were closed in the hotel, and I didn't really understand that I could go out and get something in a convenience store if I wanted. I was exhausted too.

I went to use the toilet, sat down, and immediately stood back up again. The toilet seat was HOT. What the devil?

I worked out with the desk clerk when I checked in that to make my plane I'd have to leave the hotel around 6:30 am. Early. I was so jetlagged I didn't know if I'd wake up properly. Of course, even though the room was gorgeous and I was terribly tired, I couldn't sleep very well. I did try, but I worried too much about getting up.

I was wide awake at 5:00 something and decided to go out. In the lobby I found an entrance to the Japanese Garden, and I went out there. It was truly lovely and peaceful. A little haven of tranquility. I centered myself, steeling myself for the day.

I checked with the front desk about the restaurant, but it didn't open until 6:30 am, the time when I had to leave. Sigh. I checked out, took a taxi to the airport, and caught my flight to Sapporo.

In Sapporo, I was met by a trainer and he took me to a restaurant for breakfast, after we checked my bag back in for another flight. This one was to Niigata. I was starving, it had been so long since my last decent meal.

I flew to Niigata and was met by the teacher that I was replacing. From Niigata, we had a 2 hour train ride north to Tsuruoka. What a rigamarole. I'm honestly not sure why I had to fly to Sapporo. It would have been so much easier to fly to Tsuruoka from Haneda.

Anyhoo, that's how my first two days in Japan went. I honestly never thought that I would stay here so long.

*******
I had a good day. I did a little laundry in the early afternoon, had a class, made dinner (fettucine carbonara) and enjoyed myself.

Tomorrow I'm rather busy, so I had better get some sleep. Night night!

March 26, 2009 - Thursday

Cold and very windy, but sunny and not rainy.

Today was a pretty good day. Not much happened though.

I spent a lot of time on line today. I checked schedules for coming home from Fukushima. I'll come back before Fumihiko, so need to know how. I also ran off a crochet pattern from the net. I think I'll try starting it to check and see if I can actually do it. Hopefully!

I went off to work, made a drugstore stop on the way.

Work was fine. I got a call about 30 minutes before my first class from the mother of the students to say that her daughter was sick with the flu and so she wouldn't be coming tonight. Well, as I'm really worried about getting the flu right now, I was glad. However, there wasn't enough time to contact my 2nd class's student to see if she'd like an earlier class today. I did some prep and checked my Saturday lessons, so that was good.

My class today went well. We've been working on listening and reading and today we did a bit about adverbs of frequency. I hope it was useful for the student.

I finished up quickly tonight and Fumihiko picked me up around 9:30. He hadn't gotten kerosene yet though. We were supposed to eat dinner at home, but he said he didn't want to tonight. We went to Cocos and had a nice meal. I had chicken, he had the hamburger steak I had last time.

We came home, dropped off my bike and then grabbed the kerosene tanks. We took them to the gas station (they sell kerosene too) and filled them up. When I say we, I mean "he".

Back at home tonight Fumihiko did some work for our apartment building. Happily, his tenure as apartment manager is coming to an end. I did have to chuckle a few times because I know more about using his computer than he does. He still hasn't figured out how to "cut and paste". He emailed stuff over to me to print out. Which I did. I'm nice that way.

It's now really late, and I have to get some sleep. I'll try to catch you tomorrow night. Bye!

March 25, 2009 - Wednesday

Rainy, then clearing, and back to rainy again.

I got up fairly early (for ME) this morning and took my shower right away. Then, I came back and watched the news and drank coffee with Charlie. Charles Gibson, the newscaster, get your minds out of the gutter people!

I spent a bit of time on my computer but around noon I started cooking my lunch. At lunchtime. Wow. Just before 1 I headed off to my school.

It was a bit of a soggy ride there, but I made it without too much trouble. The classroom was nice and warm. I did the drying off my clothes thing and a few last minute prep things. My student arrived on time and we had a nice lesson. She's fun, she asks lots of questions and even comes prepared with a list of things to talk about!

After she left, I did paperwork, then set up for my first class tomorrow. Not hard, but I had to do some photocopying and chair setting up. I left the school.

It didn't seem like it was raining much, so I didn't wear my raincape. I made a stop in a craft store though and by the time I came out empty handed it was raining quite hard again. I decided to just make a break for home.

I got home a little before 5 and was back on my computer in no time. Fumihiko called me around 5:30 to see where I was. When he came home, he changed and we went out. We bought my bus ticket for coming home next month and found out that I don't have to have a reservation on the bus. Whew. I made Fumihiko go upstairs with me to the hundred yen shop where I headed for the wool section. I thought I might make a shawl or a blanket when I was with him in the hospital. If I make it out of crochet it doesn't matter if I have to put it down suddenly and if I use cheap wool I won't feel bad if anything happens to it. Or something like that. I got some acrylic purpley-pinky stuff, variegated yarn. Hopefully I'll do something with it. I've sort of left off with my eyelash yarn. I don't have a real plan for that at all. Sigh.

Then, we had coffee in Doutors. Yum. We talked about going out for dinner and decided to go to Hyakkenbori. We drove there, got out, walked over to the restaurant in the pouring rain...and they were full. Sigh. Change of plans. Next we went to the Grand El Sun to try there. I was a little worried because the parking lots were full, but we were okay. We got a seat in the back and had a lovely meal. Fumihiko had pasta (cabbage and scallops in a tomato cream sauce) and I had fish (suzuki). We both had appetizers and and salad. I was able to have soup too. My fish was really nice, but I thought it was just slightly overcooked. We finished with a nice cup of coffee.

We visited my school again to take the shopping from the other night, and to set the heater. I couldn't do it earlier as the timer only works for 24 hours and I wouldn't be back at the school for 26 or so hours.

We hit the grocery store for a few supplies and then came home for the rest of the Ugly Betty episodes that were listed in the paper.

It was quite a quiet evening all told. Nice though.

That's it for me. Tomorrow I have to work late, so we're either going to have pasta at home or go out. Depends what Fumihiko and I feel like tomorrow night. Bye!

March 24, 2009 - Tuesday

Cloudy, then rainy and finally snowy. Bah!

I got up at a reasonable time this morning because my phone was ringing. One of my students phoned to tell me she got my email. She could have just emailed me back.

I had a busy but quiet morning after that. Not busy in the housework type of thing, just busy on my computer. Hey, it counts! I showered early, got some things ready for work, and at 1:00 started to cook my brunch.

When I rode off to work it was a bit grey outside, but not raining. I made good time to my school and I parked and went in. I did a few cleaning things. The dust bunnies seem to multiply over the weekend. I changed and got ready for my class.

Our class was good, but we didn't quite finish what I hoped. Still, I think we did enough. After class we chatted a bit on why Japanese Junior High School students don't like English. I have a few ideas about that, but was nice to my student!

I had a 3 hour break in between my classes today. I thought about just staying put, but decided to go out. Not a great idea. When I went out I discovered that it was now raining. I bicycled off to a drugstore that I never go to. While I was there I got a few things for me, including some non caffeine tea. I was happy to see that. When I came back to the school it was starting to snow.

I dried my clothes on the heater rack and read my newspaper and drank my tea. It was nice to be inside again.

My last class went well. We talked about all kinds of things and I think the student learned a few new usages of words and phrases. I hope so anyway!

After class I finished up early and called Fumihiko. He came to pick me up and I was surprised to see that there was quite a bit of snow outside. It wasn't really staying on the ground, but there was quite a bit on the car.

We came home and I immediately started making dinner. I had a lot of veggies to prepare, but did them as fast as I could. I got Fumihiko to drain the tofu for me, but I could tell he was going to get in my way, so I scooted him off to the couch for a bit. Finally, I was ready to start cooking. My stirfry turned out rather nicely. It's the first time in a long time that I prepped all the veggies myself. I didn't use any prepackaged veggies, except for bean sprouts. They came in a bag, so what could I do? The stirfry was good and got a thumbs up from Fumihiko. He even had seconds, so yay.

Fumihiko washed the dishes and we continued watching the Ugly Betty marathon that was on. After 11, NHK ran a Eurythmics special which I watched. They are one of my favourite groups, maybe my favourite non-Canadian group, so it was fun to watch. However, most of the songs were ones that I didn't know.

Anyway, that's about it for me. I do have a class tomorrow, and it's earlier than most of my classes so I should get some sleep. I just hope that it doesn't snow tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed, eh? Night.

March 23, 2009 - Monday

Cold with a little bit of snow that didn't stay.

Because I went to bed so late last night (around 4 am) I was really tired when I got up this morning. However, I did get up and after vegging and drinking coffee for a while got on with my day.

Around noon I started wrapping my friend's birthday present. It took a while, but I finally finished it all. I re-watched Project Runway at the same time. Just before 3 I ran out and went to the bank and the post office. I sort of made it to the bank on time. I made my deposits and then went to the post office and deposited lots of coins! I also mailed of my package to my friend. I hope it'll be there in time for her birthday.

I came home and watched more taped TV. I just enjoyed myself really.

When Fumihiko came home we went out for dinner to a new place near my school. We discovered that it is actually an izakaya, but it's a European style tapas bar. It was quite nice. We had a few dishes, spicy potato fries, grilled chicken with veggies, salmon cream spaghetti and sauteed mushrooms with garlic. We didn't have drinks, just oolong tea.

We hit up my school to turn on the heater for tomorrow, then went to the grocery store to get something for dinner tomorrow. I think it'll be stir fry and it should be good!

We actually watched some cool TV tonight. Ugly Betty was on and then ER. Tonight was the end of the season. We found out what happened to Ray and then at the end something happened to Neela. Oh no. After midnight, Desperate Housewives was on. With the exception of ER, they were all repeats, but fun to watch.

Anyway, that's my day. It was quite nice! And now...on with my week. Night.

March 22, 2009 - Sunday

Rainy and chilly.

A not so great day. Fumihiko's back was acting up with the bad weather and so he was a grump all day. Sigh.

I got up in the afternoon and after a bit we went out for lunch. I thought. Except, when we got to the restaurant, Fumihiko announced that he only wanted ramen and wouldn't eat there. We had a bit of a spat and he ordered something for himself, but not a meal. We ate, mine was awful, and then checked out his ramen shop. It was closed. It was after lunch time. Then we went to Pal to buy my friend a present for her birthday.

We came home and he went to bed for several hours. When he got up around 6, he went out for ramen. Didn't even tell me where he was going, just went. He came back a while later and volunteered to take me out for dinner. I asked if he was going to eat with me. He said no. I passed.

After a couple of spats we finally went out around 8:30 to Cocos. He did have some food, and we had some nice talk. We came back home via the grocery store to get some eggs. We literally just got bread and eggs.

We came home and had a quiet evening at home. Fumihiko watched bad TV as usual. Gah. He went to bed a bit late, and is finally sleeping.

That was my day. It wasn't great. Wasn't terrible, but I didn't enjoy myself at all.

March 21, 2009 - Saturday

Sunny and warm.

A mostly good day today. I went to work in the early afternoon, then went out with my husband for coffee at Mr. Donuts. I promptly spilled most of it all over the table, myself and the floor. Ack. Can't take me anywhere.

In the evening we planned to go out and see a movie. We watched Die Hard with Vengence (aka the third one) on TV first and it was fun. However, after it finished, Fumihiko discovered boxing on TV. Bleck. He wouldn't leave until it was over.

We had dinner at a soba shop and then headed out to the mall to see Valkyrie, the latest Tom Cruise movie. I rather liked it. Because the majority of actors were British, the acting was good. It was a bit of a downer over all, but quite interesting.

We came home via a convenience store for some ice cream, then watched Private Practice. After that, it was time for Project Runway. Today the challenge was to make costumes for female professional wrestlers. It was silly and also fun.

After a bit of channel surfing and Ugly Betty, Fumihiko discovered that season 2 of Heroes is on Yamagata TV. ACK. I know this is the "bad" season, but I'd still like to watch it. Today we just caught the last five minutes.

And that's it. I'm yawning at my keyboard and it is way past time for bed. Catch you tomorrow! Night.

March 20, 2009 - Friday

Colder, but clear and sunny.

I stayed up late last night, but I went to bed before my husband! I couldn't get him to wake up enough to go to bed, so I just left him on the couch.

I slept in this morning while Fumihiko took his mum off to the temple/shrine/whatever it is. I did manage to get up while he was gone, but napped on the couch. I missed the early news, so I watched it at noon. They cut it off. I really hate how NHK edits it, and then cuts it off so we can see a film of the Grand Canyon or something.

Fumihiko had seen a new restaurant when he was out with his mum so he wanted to try it out. We got there, but it was crowded. They took our number and would call when we could get a table. They called back a few minutes later and we went back to the restaurant. We had a very nice meal. We had grilled chicken with Japanese sauce (it was a little spicy, nice!), salad, soup and ratatouille, with a tiny bit of blancmange and coffee for dessert. The price was quite reasonable too. It was their first day of being open, so it looks like they might be a good place to keep in mind.

After lunch I wanted to go home and check the movie schedule, but Fumihiko just wanted to go to the mall. So, we did that. We found that a movie I wanted to see was on in 5 minutes, but I said pass. I didn't feel like rushing to get tickets, popcorn and drinks, and go to the toilet in five minutes. I hate missing part of the film too, so I think it was better not to go. We had some tea or hot chocolate in Seattle's then went off to the Across Plaza. We walked through one store and then looked through the bookstore. I nearly bought something there, but decided not to.

We headed back to the mall, got a great parking space, and then had a quick dinner at one of the mall places. Mine was fine. Fumihiko always expects too much and is disappointed!

We went to see Australia. It was okay. Hugh Jackman was great, Nicole was fine, but overall, I'm not sure I liked it. I did enjoy playing "Who was in Strictly Ballroom ?" though. I hoped Paul Mercurio would show up somewhere, but he didn't. Sigh.

After the movie we couldn't decide what to do, so we came back to Tsuruoka and went to my school to set the heater for the morning. I hadn't planned to, but today was a bit colder than the last couple of days. When we couldn't agree on a restaurant, we went to the grocery store and picked up a a few things. We came home and ate in front of the TV. I reheated some of the veggies from last night, so we did rather well. I was also happy to use up some of the food anyway.

Fumihiko put on some awful TV and was a bit peeved at me when I asked if it was the news, so I put on my headphones and tuned it all out. I have days where if I hear one more word in Japanese I'm sure I'll scream. Today was one of those days.

Anyway, things are fine. I felt much better after listening to some pop music. He's gone off to bed, and I'm blogging earlier than usual so I can get some sleep too! I have to work tomorrow afternoon.

*********************

Just wanted to post that today we asked about at a store if the DVD of Okuribito (Departures) had English subtitles. It doesn't. Now, let me get this straight, the film wins the Academy Award for best Foreign Language Film and it DOESN'T have subtitles available? Tasagare Seibei which was nominated (but didn't win sadly) was released with English subtitles. Japanese logic rules again.

Rather than just vent about it tonight though, I fired off an email to the company. I have no idea if they'll answer or just ignore my email, but thought it was worth a shot. The DVD isn't out at Amazon in the US yet. Worst case scenario, I'll pick it up next time I'm home, but really, should I have to?

Night.

March 19, 2009 - Thursday

Sunny and warm.

Today was a pretty good day. I got up, watched the news and drank my coffee while I munched on some toast. Yum.

After the news, I showered and then did some laundry. Finally. I also prepared tonight's dinner. I had a lot of veggies to prepare. I cut up the veggies, layered them in my slow cooker, put the chicken breasts on the top and then poured some chicken stock over it all. I set it to low and left the slow cooker to do its magic.

I headed off to work around 5 tonight. It's wonderful how light it is now. I made a run through the drugstore to get some hand soap for our kitchen, some sweetener for me and a few other things before getting to my school.

I had stopped by last night to set the heater, but it was quite warm in there. I ended up turning off the heater, and didn't use it in my classroom all night!

My lessons went fairly well. I had to check over the first one as I hadn't quite done that on Tuesday. (I had planned to do that on Wednesday, but the Wednesday student cancelled just before I left the school on Tuesday.) I also read a little bit of the paper. My first students were late, but when they came we had a good time. We did quite a bit too, which is good.

My second lesson also went well. My student told me that she had ordered some of the same tea that I have in my school for herself. It's Stash tea, which I picked up when I was in Canada last year. It is good. I don't usually drink the herbal teas, which are the popular teas in my school, but I love their other ones.

After class I cleared up, and called Fumihiko. He came to get me and we came home.

I went into dinner mode right away. I set the table, and Fumihiko made coffee for us. I dished up dinner and made a sort of gravy for the chicken. It was pretty good, but Fumihiko didn't eat everything. His back was bad and I think he just wasn't feeling like eating. Poor thing. I gave him a break from the dishes and told him to go and take a bath.

I watched X-Files The Movie, the one from a few years ago. I had seen it before, but it was cool to watch it again. That was one of my biggest regrets coming over here. I didn't get to see the rest of the series. I was fanatical about it.

And that's about it for my day. Fumihiko is snoozing on the couch. I think he's waiting/hoping that I'll go to bed soon. Tomorrow is a national holiday so we get to sleep in and relax. He won't sleep in though, he never does! I believe that he will take his mother to the temple to visit his father's grave though.

Gotta run. Night!

March 18, 2009 - Wednesday

Sunny and warm day. Amazing really!

Today was a good day. I got up early and watched the news with some toast and coffee. Later I made the bed and checked email.

Had a day at home. I did think about running some errands, and I should have, but I did some work. I finally wrote up the letter for my students about my time off next month. I decided to make one letter do for two holidays, so I included my Golden Week time off too.

I did a little bit of housework in the afternoon, and then waited for Fumihiko to come home. He was a little late tonight, but not like Tuesday night.

We had a nice dinner in Kintarosushi, set my school's heater for tomorrow and bought groceries. I'm going to set up my slow cooker for tomorrow night. Wish me luck eh!

At home Fumihiko watched some of the really brainless TV that I hate. It gave me a headache, so after a while I asked him to turn it down. He changed the channel to 24. Now, he doesn't watch 24, has no idea what it's about, so he was trying to please me. But, I haven't watched enough to know what's going on. However, it was sweet of him to try I think.

Anyway, it was a nice day. Tomorrow I'm back at work, with two late classes. I have to do a bit of shopping for myself on the way to work, so hopefully will leave early.

That's it! Night.

March 17, 2009 - Tuesday

Sunny and a little windy.

Today was a good day. I got up on time to watch the news and then afterwards I took my shower. When I finished that, I got to work on the chicken for dinner. The cunning plan was that I would prepare it and get Fumihiko to cook it while I finished work. The best laid plans, etc.

After a quick lunch I headed off to my school. I was a tad late, but thankfully had left everything in order on Saturday, so it was no big deal. My first class went very well. I even let the student stay a little longer so that we could finish up our topic. I think she really was interested.

In my break I did paperwork and also read Sunday's newpaper. Just before 5 I was ready for my student so when the doorbell rang I didn't think anything about it. However, the student outside wasn't the one I was expecting! Friday's student, the one I sometimes complain about, was outside with a small White Day present for me! AWWW! He gave me some cookies and a small hanko case, the kind that looks like a lipstick case. I couldn't even thank him properly as I was expecting my other student any minute!

She came just a few seconds after the boy left, so it was good timing. We also had a great class. I told her I blog, but I didn't give her my address for this blog. I probably should, but I told her I just complain about my husband all the time. Sadly, that's almost true.

After another break where I read Monday's paper, got a message from my husband that he'd probably finish work around 8:00 pm, and did more paperwork, I had my last class. It was also a good one. We started a new unit and did a lot of work with her dictionary.

When I finished cleaning up I texted Fumihiko and he called me back. It was quarter to nine and he'd just finished work. Poor thing. And, poor us because the chicken wasn't cooked. Oh well. He came to get me and we went home. At home, I stuck the chicken in the oven and then checked my email.

When the chicken was done, it was really good. We had it with onion salad and kabocha stew that Fumihiko made. Dinner was quite nice.

Fumihiko did the dishes and I read more email. Tonight was a bumper day for email.

Our meal was really late tonight so we didn't watch any TV or really do much of anything. Hopefully, tomorrow night we'll be able to spend more time together.

Anyway, it was a good day. That's it for me! Night.

March 16, 2009 - Monday

Rainy and now with added thunderstorms.

What a day. It turned out okay, but not great.

I slept in this morning. There wasn't any news on and I was tired, so I just stayed in bed and slept late. I got up and made the bed and got dressed.

Just after 12 o'clock I got a message from my husband saying that he was coming home. He'd taken half a day off. What? Why? I was not a happy camper. I had him all day Sunday, he managed to barge in on my work day on Saturday and I was looking forward to a bit of peace. Besides, he gets Friday off this week as it's a national holiday. Doesn't he ever have to work?? There were a few things that I planned to do, like go to the post office and bank, and do laundry that I have to do when he's not around, because he's always hogging my washing machine.

When he did come home, he spent the first 20 minutes trying to send a fax. Coincidentally, those 20 minutes were when the news was on the TV. Fumihiko is neither see-through nor quiet. After he didn't manage to send the fax, he decided to hand deliver it, but set up a load of laundry in the washing machine, just after I said I was going to take a shower. ARGHHHHH.

I tried to calm down, but it was pretty difficult. I wasn't in a good headspace. After a while I figured out that it was probably down to me not eating yet. When he came back, we went out for lunch and things got decidedly better after that.

I set up the heater in my school and discovered that an ex-student had returned my books. Hurray for that.

We drove out to the mall and looked for movies. There was nothing on except 7 Pounds which I'd already seen (and was not willing to see again) and Madagascar 2, which I just plain old didn't want to see. So, we did a bit of window shopping, bought some nice bread, looked at cheap dvds (DIDN'T buy any!) and then had a nice coffee in Seattle's best.

We came home and watched August Rush again. I really like that film. It's a fairy tale, but it's sweet and wonderful.

We had dinner in Grado tonight. The food was good, the service wasn't. The waiter there has this weird thing where he brings the second course before he clears away the first courses dishes. That means that he's handling clean and dirty dishes and juggling them at the same time. He also managed to ignore our empty water glasses. I told Fumihiko that if we were in Canada I wouldn't tip him. There was a surprise visitor on our table tonight too. I saw my first ladybird of the year on the sugar container. I gently picked it up and put it on the tree in the corner. I would have taken it outside but I was a bit trapped in the corner. I hope it was a real tree!

We came home and Fumihiko started watching something. It was about 11:30 when I said, "Hey, isn't ER on?" It was, so he turned to it. It's set to tape in our HDD anyway, but I'd rather watch it "live". When it ended, we rewatched the episode completely.

Anyway, that's it for the evening. Fumihiko's off sleeping and I should go and join him. Tomorrow I have a bit of an early start at the school. Wish me luck! Night night.

March 15, 2009 - Sunday

Rainy.

Today was quite a good day. I got up late and then the two of us went out for brunch. Our first choice was closed for lunch, so we went to Gusto. It was busy there, but the food was okay.

We did a lot of shopping for Fumihiko's hospital stay. We got him some towels. We went to a "recycle" shop and bought him some of the towels from wedding gift sets. They're all brand new, so no problems. We'll just wash them to get the store feeling off them! After that, we went to another store and got him a couple of pairs of pajamas.

We ended up going to the hundred yen shop in the mall to get him some other things. We didn't get him the chopsticks there though as he was too darn picky! He got a cup (although as he chose a china one rather than a plastic one like I suggested, I don't know why he doesn't just take one from home!) We went downstairs afterwards and had teas at Doutors. We saw a friend of ours and waved, but he didn't see us. Bit sad about that. I haven't seen him in years, but I think he was rushing off for the bus.

We came home to drop off our shopping and then went out for dinner a bit later. We went to the Daiichi Hotel tonight. It was nice. I'm happy to say that they have dropped the whole buffet thing and so we just ordered off the menu. Much nicer. We had Shonai Pork with ginger sauce. It was very nice. Then, we came home.

Fumihiko wanted to watch some Amazing Stories on video, so he did, and then I watched Sleuth, the new Kenneth Branagh directed one, with Michael Caine and Jude Law. It was....not so good. It didn't really hold my attention. I spent more time playing computer games than watching the film.

When it finished, WOWOW then showed Sleuth, the original Lawrence Olivier/Michael Caine one. What a difference. That one did hold my attention, especially after the scene setting began. Much better version. Wonder why Ken decided to even bother? It was a bit gimmicky having Caine do the role that Olivier did all those years before. Hmm.

I spent some time doing a Facebook note thing about movies. It was rather an odd list. It felt like it had been compiled by a 17 year old who only liked horror and fantasy movies! Still, I'd seen about a third of the movies!

Anyway, I'm off to bed soon. Night!

March 14, 2009 - Saturday

Rainy, then a little snowy in the evening.

Today was quite a good day. Hurray for that!

In the morning, Fumihiko got up early and went off to Fukushima for tests at the hospital. Poor thing was out of here by 6:30 am.

I got up much later, showered and then came back to the living room for my coffee and news. After the news, it was my Murder and Mayhem show, Criminal Minds. It was good today, but violent. I started making my brunch just as it finished. Fumihiko called me and chatted for a bit, then just as soon as I got him off the phone, a student called to cancel and reschedule. Ack. I was trying to eat my omelette while it was hot and couldn't really tell my student that!

It was raining very heavily when I left and I was soaked by the time I got on my bike. Sigh. I made a detour to go to a convenience store. I was just in the process of sticking my arm out to signal that I was turning when some stupid car came up right beside me. It was really windy, I had one arm halfway in the air and I was scared. I came thisclose to hitting the damn car. He or she, no idea which, just kept on going. I picked up something for my lunch at the store, although my hands were really shaking.

At the school, I parked my bike and went in. I locked the door and did a strip. My pants were dripping and hanging low because they were so heavy with rain. I quickly got ready for the day.

When my student and her mother arrived, I started teaching. This particular child is really fun and sweet. I have taught her since she was about 3 years old I think. We finished up a bit early today, so I brought out some of the books I bought when I was in Niigata. She read one! I did have to help with some of the words, but not that many. She didn't understand everything, but with the pictures in the book and me helping out, she did amazingly well. I was so proud of her. I didn't really think she could do it. I wanted her to start with an easier book, but that was the one she picked up.

I had a huge gap in my day today. With the morning's cancellation I had 4 hours to fill. The weather was still majorly awful, so going home or out wasn't really an option. I did paperwork. I brought my bookkeeping up to date, did a little lesson prep, cleaning, and then some craftwork. I had lunch around 4, and read my newspaper too. I was enjoying myself. Fumihiko called me just before 5 to say he was back and could he come and visit my school. Against my better judgement, I let him. I made him some coffee while he was there, which he drunk. He had all his Fukushima paperwork with him and was going over it in front of me. He told me that he's decided to have a private room while I'm there, and I can stay in the room. Lights out are at 9:00pm. I haven't gone to bed at 9:00 pm since I was 12. I'm not sick. I understand about everyone else needing rest, but I'm not sick. Anyway, he kept coming up with all these doom and gloom predictions for the whole procedure and really upset me. Before my 6:00 pm class. I kicked him out of (=politely told him he had to leave) my school at 5:30 so I could finish getting ready, but really to calm down.

My last class was fun. We talked about numbers for prices. The Japanese money counting system is completely different from the western style, so it was a good lesson for her. She's a nice young lady and we enjoyed our time together.

After work, I called Fumihiko and he came back to the school for me. He picked me up and we went back home to change. I really needed to change my shoes and my jacket. They were all still wet. I had managed to dry my pants, but didn't want to risk the jacket near the heater.

We went out for soba and then as we had nothing else planned, we went for karaoke. We got a Japanese style room for a change, so sat on zabuton on the floor. We had a great old time! Fumihiko turned on the rating system so we could find out how good/bad we were. Most of what we did was great. Because I did a lot of Canadian stuff, I came out at the best, good old number one. What did I sing? Lots of things, Michael Buble's Home, Meatloaf's Anything for Love, Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill and Glass Tiger's Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone. Lots of stuff. Fumihiko did well too. He did a mixture of English and Japanese songs.

We finished up at karaoke just before 12:15 so that we could get home in time to watch Project Runway. Tonight they had to make their projects out of jeans. It was an interesting challenge and a good show. Fumihiko watched it too, and seemed to enjoy it. He's been picking up a few of the expressions from the show lately too. This week he told me that I could "leave the runway" and that I was "out. Auf Wiedersehen." It was quite funny!

And that was it. We spent the rest of the night quietly, but enjoyably. Night.

March 13, 2009

Friday

Cool and cloudy.

Today was a little strange. I have to say that! Last night when I went to bed I couldn't sleep, because Fumihiko couldn't sleep. After he fell asleep, I did sleep a bit, but woke up coughing. Gah. I of course woke him up. Sorry.

I was sleeping and enjoying myself this morning when I got a call from my husband on the house phone. The call was before my usual wake up time. He wanted to tell me that the fire alarm checking crew were on their way. I knew that it was today, but he had told me that they would come between 9 and 12 and it wasn't 9 am yet. I told him that if they tried to come in before 9 I'd tell them to come back. It didn't meet with a good response, but honestly. He woke me up and then wants to argue when I just want to head to the.... Well, anyway I went back to bed and tried to sleep a little longer, but failed miserably. I got dressed and watched TV and waited for the inspection team. They arrived promptly at 10:15...two hours after my husband's call. Grr. How many of you think he was calling just to wake me up???

Anyway, that being done for another 6 months, I got on with my day. I watched a bit of TV and then had a lovely omelette of ham and cheddar cheese.

I rode off into the sunset west on my bicycle. I made good time and got ready for my class. It went quite well and was over quickly. The child is really trying these days. He's doing well. Other students work harder, and are easier to teach, but he's become so much better over the years.

I cleaned up a little...not much to do today...set up for tomorrow, and then texted my husband. He called me back after a bit and came to get me. We came home first for him to change clothes, then went out for okonomiyaki at our little place. It's a converted house, it's near our grocery store and its a small business. We were the only customers tonight and were treated to a yummy meal of curry-cheese and kimchee okonomiyakis. They were good. We bought a few groceries afterwards, then came home.

We spent a quiet but nice evening together. We watched the end half of DOA with Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid on the telly, then Fumihiko watched a few things before making an attempt to get to bed.

Tomorrow morning he's off early to Fukushima for some testing. I have classes so I can't go with him. I'll have a long break in the middle of my day, so I plan/hope to do some book-keeping and some redecorating. My school needs a bit of changing around again. Spring is nearly here....isn't it? Please tell me it is, lie if you have to!

That's it for me. Got to go. Night.
