August 31, 2009 - Monday

Cloudy and then rainy at night.

I had a good if quiet day today. I got up, realized I was still very tired and then went back to sleep. For a bit. Yay me.

I got up, showered and then did my computer stuff. I also worked on and thankfully finished my movie column today. Whew. Down to the wire. Bad me. While I was working on my column I watched my TV shows from the weekend. The Cold Case was really sad. It was about a serial killer of young boys. F sent me an email to say he would take Wednesday off. Oh yay. Not so happy about that one. Not that I don't want to spend time with him, but just that he didn't consult me first. I never take time off without discussing it with him. Plus of course, I have to arrange it with my students so it's a little disheartening that he can do it at the drop of a hat.

When he came home tonight we vegged for a while. I was watching Batman Begins and he got sucked into it too. Finally we decided to go out for dinner.

F had wanted to go to a Thai restaurant that I went to a while ago. We drove there and they were open, but there was no parking available. Some brainiac had parked parallel to the street when everyone else was parked diagonally. That meant that he took up enough space for 3 cars. Since we couldn't go there, we went to Moundon, the Korean place we go sometimes.

We had some nice food at Moundon, but the "mama-san" or owner/cook of the restaurant suggested that instead of ordering what we wanted, we order something else....of course more expensive. F said it was okay, even though I wasn't too impressed. We had our whole menu worked out and it went out the door. Sigh. We had some sort of stirfry thing that we cooked ourselves. Now, forgive me a second here, but MY stirfry is much better! The restaurant's was a bit sweet. The veggies and meat were good, but they were very watery and by the end I was looking for something to cut the sweetness. We ordered chap chae as well earlier and it was a bit sweet too. I don't like spicy food, but I also don't like sweet main dishes! So, for me it was a bit of a washout really. We did get a bit of tofu for an appetizer that was really nice.

We came home via the grocery store. I'm going to make something tomorrow night. I think it'll be cubed steak marinated in Worchester sauce and then sauteed, with a salad. I'll probably open one of my frozen veggie packs in the freezer and have some veggies too. Of course, I do plan on thawing them out.

Anyway, I'm off. Tomorrow I don't have any early classes, but I do have to get to the school a little early I think. I'd like to run an errand on the way to work. Wish me luck! Night.

English Mistakes...

Yesterday I had this conversation with my husband...

Hub: My mother told me today that my nephew is getting married on September 12. (The day we leave for Canada.)

Me: Wow. It's kind of late to get an invitation.

Hub: Yes. I'll have to send a present.

Me: Okay. Well, I know that you were really close to your nephew once, did you want to cancel our trip? I could still go.

Hub: No, I want to go to Canada.

Me: Is it a shotgun wedding? He's kind of young to get married, isn't he?

Hub: What?

Me: Is she pregnant?

Hub: I don't think so.

Hub: Oh, did I say nephew? I meant cousin. My cousin is getting married.

Me: Oh. That makes more sense! I think your sister would send you an invitation earlier than two weeks before the wedding!

August 30, 2009 - Sunday

Muggy and warm. Good day though.

We had a nice day today. F got up early to vote and take his mother to the shops, then he came back here and vegged until I got up for keeps.

We had soba for lunch and I ate a lot. Didn't think I was that hungry, but apparently I was!

We went to karaoke this afternoon, but not to our usual place. We went to the nicer place near our grocery store. It wasn't too bad money wise, but F got us just the one drink service and I wanted drink bar. Gah. Still, he's the one that guzzles the drinks so it doesn't really matter! I sang a bunch of songs and I think I actually nailed some of them today. I did "And All That Jazz" from the movie Chicago and it sounded pretty good. I didn't go for the gusto until the end...and I did "Never Surrender" by Corey today too. Lately, I've been losing it when I sing. A bunch of my favourite songs can just make me cry and I'm not sure why!

We came home for a while after karaoke and just vegged. Finally we went for a late dinner. It wasn't my idea to go so late, it just happened. F wanted to go for Thai food, but the place was closed, so we ended up at an izakaya. We had quite a nice meal. I had some of my favourites, eggplant and cheese yaki, nankotsu and gyoza made with chicken skin. We had a real mix of food.

On the way home we went to the grocery store and picked up a few things for home. Most of it was for my hubby, not me. At home he watched some wrestling or judo. I can't tell the difference and I don't care either! I listened to CBC radio podcasts. Yay!

That's it. I'm really late writing this today, which is why it isn't very fancy, just the facts mam! Night.

August 29, 2009 - Saturday

Cloudy and muggy all day.

I got up this morning, showered and then went out for brunch with F. We bumped into one of my students when we were at the restaurant. That was kind of cool. I got dropped off at my school and I got busy.

Today I had 3 classes, they all went fairly well. In my free time I worked on my column. It was going along swimmingly, but I had to stop to teach.

After the lessons and the clean up I called F and we went to the drugstore to get some things for my school and our apartment. Then, we dropped off my computer at home and went to the restaurant. We went to Grado and had a nice meal. I had chicken and pork.

We came home and at midnight I watched The Apprentice. It was okay this week. Then, since House didn't seem to be on, I watched Serving Sara with Matthew Perry and Elizabeth Hurley. The only interesting part of the movie was recognizing Vinnie from The Apprentice. It was a bad movie. The yuks were strained.

F tried to get me to print some thing out for him, but he does it in a really odd way. He put it in a spreadsheet and then emailed it to my computer. It doesn't work that way. I honestly don't know why he didn't just write it up as a text document. It would be a million times easier.

We've had a stressful night here. I think he's mad at me and he keeps sneezing. He has these huge booming sneezes and every time one goes off I jump about 10 feet. I think I've irritated him somehow and he can't or won't tell me what I've done. Sigh.

Tomorrow I don't have any plans. Hubby has to go and vote, but apart from that, I'm not sure what we'll do. Wish us luck! Night.

August 28, 2009 - Friday

Cloudy and muggy all day. Humid.

Today was interesting. I got up before my alarms and stayed up. I watched the news which was still mostly about Ted Kennedy, but at least today they had other news as well. After the news finished I decided to do something interesting. I went out for breakfast to McDonalds. I've been thinking about going for a while, I got some coupons, but every Friday when it's a good day to go, it has been pouring. Today, I just decided to go and if I got wet, too bad. It wasn't raining, just threatening. Breakfast was okay, not great, but that was what I expected anyway.

I came home after a quick trip to the grocery store and did all the things I didn't do before I left! I made the bed, took a shower, that kind of thing. I had a nice relaxing afternoon at home. I made up a playlist and enjoyed myself immensely singing along with Corey Hart and Gowan. Yay.

I left the apartment just after five and went to the drugstore first. I got a few things for myself and eyed a purse, but honestly I didn't get that much today. A couple of drinks, that was it.

At the school I checked my set up for today, did a few things around the school and read the newspaper. No big deal. When my student came we had a good lesson. He didn't get 100 percent on his listening test, but I think the one he made a mistake on was a bit hard. He got 7 out of 8, so certainly not a bad result.

After he left I did my paperwork-clean up bit and then sent hubby a text message. He replied a few minutes later, but hadn't really read my message. He'd gone to a political meeting. He picked me up and we went to Cocos for dinner.

Dinner was okay, but the restaurant was really noisy and busy. The waitress had to keep running back to our table with things. I felt sorry for her.

We came back home and F watched Wrestling on TV...the World Championships, so I can't grumble too much, and I listened to my playlist from earlier. I did a minor shuffle of songs and it worked really nicely. So, because I'm sure that EVERYONE wants to know what my playlist was, here it is...

  1. Dueling Guitar ---Heitor Pereira & Doug Smith (August Rush Soundtrack)
  2. Rotterdam (Or Anywhere) ---The Beautiful South
  3. Never Surrender --- Corey Hart
  4. Hold On Tight ---Electric Light Orchestra
  5. Moonlight Desires---Gowan
  6. St. Elmo's Fire ---John Parr
  7. Everybody Knows ---Leonard Cohen
  8. In The Name Of Love ---Mary Chapin Carpenter
  9. Sakura-zakka ---Masaharu Fukuyama
  10. Dragostea Din Tei ---O-Zone
  11. I Won't Change You ---Sophie Ellis-Bextor
  12. Road To Nowhere ---Talking Heads
  13. Senza Una Donna ---Zucchero Feat. Paul Young
  14. This Time ---Jonathan Rhys Meyers (August Rush Soundtrack)

  15. See, pretty cool isn't it? I think it's okay. There's sort of a big mixture of types of songs and nationalities and even languages!

Well, I should be off to bed soon. Tomorrow I have an early start at work. It's a long day too. Not sure what we're going to do this weekend. I think F is going to the doctor in the morning, then I have to go to work.

    Night night!

    August 27, 2009 - Thursday

    Too hot and sunny again!

I had a good day today. I managed to sleep through the night, so the blankets worked. Hurray for that! I got up and said hello to hubby on my way to the loo, then fell back asleep again. Yay.

I got up and watched the news. It was all about Ted Kennedy. The documentary afterwards was not in English, so I took my shower.

I went off to the post office to mail my bookmooch off (this one's to Ireland!) and make a small deposit. Then, I went to the convenience store nearby and grabbed a sandwich.

I had a nice afternoon back at home. Before 4 pm I started working on my lunch. I ate quickly, did dishes and got ready to go. I had my watch on, my phone in my bag and my wedding ring was there, but where was my engagement ring? Ack! I looked on my computer desk, nope. I scanned the chesterfield, even stuck my hands down the sides just in case it was there. Nope. I had to go, so I biked off to work. At the school, after I turned on the AC, I took my backpack apart. The CSI teams on the TV had nothing on me. Nothing. I went through my purse, even looking through the lining hole. Then, just as I was about to give up, while I was planning how to tell my husband that it was gone, I saw it in another pocket in my handbag. Whew. I really was surprised. I didn't put it there, so it must have slipped in or fallen. Anyway, I had it again.

I got ready for my class and my student. And, she called me to say that she was still at work and would come to see me at the very end of her class. I told her it was okay. We had a bit of business to do, but it can wait. If it wasn't convenient for her to come today, Tuesday will be fine.

My other class went quite well and we had fun. The girls tried really hard and we all enjoyed ourselves. After class I chatted with their mum for a bit and then they left. I took a bit of time to finish up tonight, so F texted me. I texted back and he came to get me.

We came home and I cooked dinner. It wasn't too exciting, just fried chicken wings and salad. F had sliced tomato and I had some tofu wannabe thing. It was nice. F did dishes afterwards and then we had dessert. I got a couple of coolish today at the convenience store and we had them tonight. They were nice.

That was about it. F went to bed around midnight, we didn't watch TV, just spent a bit of time together. It was a good day. Hurray. And, I'm so glad that I found my ring. I told hubby but he wasn't as upset about it as I was. He just said he'd get me a new one! Sweet, but I LOVE my engagement ring. Night!

    August 26, 2009 - Wednesday

Hot and sunny, cold at night.

This morning I did something unusual. When I made the bed, I put our blankets on it as well as the towelkets. It's getting quite cold at night and the towelket isn't quite enough anymore. It was a bit strange doing it, but better than being cold. I also got up in time to watch the news this morning, and drink some of F's lovely coffee.

I had a relaxing morning around the apartment. I didn't even get dressed until the afternoon. Don't you love days off? Me too! But I did change finally and around 3 pm decided to go out. I biked off to the post office first to make a payment and to mail off a bookmooch to Canada. Then I went on to the mall.

At the mall, I had a quite nice lunch at the restaurant upstairs. The snotty waitress wasn't there, so I enjoyed myself a lot more. I had pasta and then dessert. I was hoping it was bread pudding. It wasn't, but it was a bit like it, more like French toast with pudding in it. I hacked around the stores but didn't buy too much. A few things in the 100 yen shop, and a packet of English Muffins at the grocery store. I had a nice tea in Doutors and wrote about a page of my column. I think I need to rewatch some of these films pronto.

I realized it would be dark soon, so I biked off home. Hubby was going to be working late tonight, so I didn't have to rush off on his behalf, but I didn't want to ride home in the dark. I got home rather quickly and watched a bit of TV and played computer games. He called me around 9:30 and came home soon after.

We went out for dinner to New York, New York. It was okay. I had chicken, my usual! We had a nice chat and then came home via the grocery store. Despite F saying I didn't have to cook tomorrow night, I ended up buying food for us. More chicken! What can I say? I like chicken!

It was after 11:30 before we got home, and F went to bed very soon afterwards. I did more internetting and reading of Eclipse. Parts of it are well done, but they are strung together with little bits of tedium that drive me up the wall. But, it's readable.

Anyway, that's it for me. I'm back to work tomorrow night, and I should go to the post office again to send off another bookmooch. I'm the only person who is willing to part with The Last Lecture. My copy is going off to Ireland. Night!

    August 25, 2009 - Tuesday

    Sunny and warm, lovely day.

I am presently reliving a small part of my youth at the moment. I'm sitting up watching Duran Duran on WOWOW. I still remember all the words to all the songs I knew back then. And, dang they were cute! That Simon Le Bon. Yummy!

Anyway....on with the daily report. I had a quiet but good morning. I did get up and watched news. It was on. Hurray! There were actually a few things on before the baseball game, so I watched some of them.

I had an early class today, so I watched the Russell Crowe movie, A Good Year, and cooked and ate my lunch. Then I set off for work.

I made it to my school in good time and had a good day at the school. All of my students showed up, although the last one only popped in to say she couldn't come today! And I also had a visitation from a couple of the Mormon missionaries, but I was in class and couldn't talk to them.

F picked me up after I finished my classes and we came home. I started cooking right away. I made pork stirfry and it was really nice. I managed to cook it so the carrots and some of the cabbage was still a little crunchy. It was great. After dinner, I looked at the paper and discovered there was a movie on, Nim's Island, so we watched that. It was okay, Jodie Foster was great of course, but there wasn't enough to the film.

That's about it for my day.... except of course for Duran Duran. The film of their concert was one of those High Concept thingys. They had Duran Duran, the character from Barbarella trying to take over the concert. That part was quite dumb, but the boys were Fine.

Tomorrow is my day off. I may not have a Wednesday off for a bit, so I probably should go out and enjoy it. Plus, I have to write my column! Night.

    August 24, 2009 - Monday

Mostly sunny and cool, with some torrential rain showers.

I couldn't get up this morning. It was nice and cool in bed and I wasn't sweating for a change. So, I slept on. Sue me, it's my day off!

When I got up I relaxed for a bit, watched my weekend's TV. Is anyone else watching Celebrity Apprentice? I really do not like that Omarosa woman. I watched the episode again, even though I'd watched it on Saturday.

The episode of Cold Case was really cool, it was based around the time of Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast. And, my favourite character got a little bit of back story again, hurray!

I was going to go out to the post office, but just as I had decided to do that, the rain came down. It was fierce! I didn't want to go out there, so I stayed home and ate lunch.

After lunch I did a bit of housework. I cleaned our dish drainer, our sink, cut up the milk cartons that were piling up, and bagged up some of hubby's cans for him to take out in the morning. Whew. I also washed the kitchen mat and the rubber non-slip mat underneath it. They're still drying.

Hubby came home around 6. To do him credit, he did offer to go to karaoke, but I think it isn't a great idea when we both have to work tomorrow. Instead, we had a snuggle and then went out for sushi.

We bought a few groceries on the way home and then basically didn't talk much to each other all night. He put on some horrible TV (kickboxing junk) so I put my headphones on my computer and listened to music and watched movie previews for a bit. Then, I went into the bedroom and read quite a bit of Eclipse. Is anyone else reading these books (Twilight series)? I love vampires stories....read all of the Anne Rice, but I'm really finding these a slog. I think I'd give up if it wasn't for Jacob. He's about the only interesting character. Two of my friends that read a lot have raved about them and I respect their opinions enough to really make an effort to read the series, but so far the novels just aren't doing it for me.

I came back out after a while and we chatted a bit, but a bit later hubby went off to bed. He does have to be up early tomorrow. Me too, at least earlier than today! My first class is at 3 so I'd like to be at the school around 2. I hope the weather is okay.

That was my day. Not too bad really. I enjoyed myself at home. I got a lot of relaxing in and it was cool. I didn't use the air conditioner at all today. Yes! Night.

    August 23, 2009 - Sunday

Hot and sunny, with rain at night.

Got up early this afternoon and got dressed. Hubby was on the couch watching telly. He wasn't dressed, and didn't get dressed for a while!

We went out to lunch to Moku-Moku and we both had cold pasta. Mine was quite good, I had tuna and tomato. We also had salad and drink bar with it.

We went shopping in the afternoon. I got a few things at Uniqlo. Hubby was a trooper today. He actually helped me find things for my nephew rather than peering over my shoulder. I got my niece something too. And, of course, hubby got something. We got him some room wear...basically pyjamas, and he got some socks for himself. I checked out the nearby 100 yen shop and picked up a few things. My favourite so far is a chain for my glasses. In my classes I'm constantly taking them off and putting them down, this way, I can just take them off. I also got myself a new pair of chopsticks, since one of my favourite pair has disappeared. I have others, but they are smooth on the ends and if the food that I want to pick up is at all slippery, I can't do it. I'm still refining my chopstick technique!

It was after 4 by the time we finished and I thought it was time for karaoke, but F had other ideas. He wanted to go for a drive along the beach and then have coffee. So, we did that. We drove along the ocean. There were a few people in the water. He wanted to stop and go and have a closer look, but today I'd worn my brand new, expensive shoes and I didn't want to wreck them on their first day out. Still, they were comfortable. We stopped in at Cafe Rivage and had drinks and desserts. I had a Chinese version of kakigori. It was very nice. Not sweet, and not too cold either. After I ordered it I worried about my teeth getting too cold, but they were fine!

Next up, karaoke? NO. We were nearish the big mall, so F decided to go there. I went to Uniqlo again, to see if they had the one thing that I went to the other one for. They did...just. They had one left in the size I needed. Ack. I got it, and a couple of others. F got himself a new shirt too. I wanted him to try it on, but he wouldn't. Silly guy...it's made out of flannel and he might not be able to wear it after he washes it!

Now karaoke? Nope, dinner. We went to a restaurant we went to once before. It was okay tonight. I spent most of the night looking at F's neck. He was engrossed in the TV program. Bleck. I hate that. He also announced that he wasn't feeling well and basically let me know that karaoke wasn't something he wanted to do anymore. He would have gone if I'd pushed it, but I was tired and disappointed so said no. It's not fun if both of us don't want to be there.

We came home, I thought to watch a movie, but instead I was treated to craptastic Japanese TV all night. Then he put on Ooops which I didn't really watch, and then some stupid police car crash thing. I HATE THAT KIND OF SHOW. I did protest, but I wasn't really listened to. Sigh. I didn't want to cause a fight so I didn't push it. I just stayed at my computer and ignored it as best as I could.

And that's it. Bookmooch is finally working again, so I put some more books on my list. A few of them are on people's wishlists. It's fun to be able to make other people happy by giving away my books. I really should add more books.

    Gotta go! Night.

    August 22, 2009 - Saturday

Cloudy in the morning, then clearing and sunny the rest of the day.

Today was a good day. I got up this morning and had a nice morning at the apartment. F came back from the doctor's office and at 11 took me out for brunch. We went to Cocos and it was quite nice. It was a good change for us.

    F. dropped me off at work and I got busy. I did have quite a lot to do today. I did a bit of cleaning quickly and then taught my first lesson with my first student. It went fairly well. I had a busy day today. All told, I had three lessons and a meeting with a new student.

I had forgotten to take my newspaper over to the school as well, so I couldn't read it today.

After I finished up, I called my husband and he picked me up. We had dinner at the tonkatsu place and then came home. We basically had a quiet evening in. I watched my shows, hubby went to bed.

That's about it for me. I'm not sure what we'll do tomorrow. I have to get a few things for my trip. I need to want to take presents, and I rarely get to go to any decent shops. Hopefully I can remedy that tomorrow.

    Catch you later! Night.

    August 21, 2009 - Friday

Rainy in the morning, clearing at night. Humid day.

Today was okay. I did manage to get to bed a little bit earlier than the night before. I also did a bit of reading before I went to bed. That was really nice.

This morning I got up, showered and then did laundry. I also experimented with making drinks. I'd read a recipe for a low carb smoothie. It had cottage cheese in it. I don't know if it wasn't smooth enough or if the Japanese cottage cheese wasn't right, but it wasn't that good. The smoothie wasn't smooth enough for me, and the flavour was lacking. My next attempt a couple of hours later was much better. I made my version of Agua Fresca. I got the idea from Mark Bittman's column at the NY Times. I would link to it, but you have to register (supposedly free to do so). I didn't have to register this morning, so I'm not doing it! Anyway, I blended some frozen strawberries, some water and some ice in my blender, until it was nicely mixed and the ice wasn't in cubes anymore. Then I added some club soda, poured it in my glass and enjoyed. Yum. I think you can do it with many kinds of fruit. The original article mentioned melon...the comments are still available, go check 'em out!

I went off to the school a bit late and decided that I didn't need to get myself anything from the drugstore today, so I just went to the school. I cooled the school down when I arrived and then prepped for my first lesson tomorrow. My lesson for today was already done.

My student came, we had an okay but not great class, and then he left. After that, I got busy. We were doing an interview tonight. The lady came, and it looks like I'll have a new student from next month. I'm quite happy about it.

F and I took a bit of time to relax. I cleaned up after the interview and also had a discussion about some of my students.

We had a simple and inexpensive dinner at New York, New York and then came home. I made us more of the strawberry drink. It was good, but I didn't use enough ice tonight. It is noisy to run the blender though and as it was 11:30 I really didn't want to antagonize the neighbours!

F has been watching some World Athletic thing. I could care more about it, but he's enjoying it. I might try reading a bit tonight or I might just go to bed. I should go to bed really.

Oh, I finished Stephenie Meyer's New Moon today. (May be SPOILERS ahead if you haven't read it.) My reaction is still, "What is all the fuss about?" I liked parts of the novel, I like the character of Jacob and when Bella was palling around with him, liked her too. BUT then, you know who shows up again and it's back to boring. I think I'm just too old. I don't (and never have) believe that there is only one person for everyone. I don't believe in soul mates so the idea that Bella, a 17 year old, can only truly be happy with a 100+ year old vampire is just irritating. Yep, I'm definitely a crochety old lady!

Anyway, that's it for me. Night!

    August 20, 2009 - Thursday

    Hot, cloudy and humid.

I had a good day today. It wasn't as productive as yesterday, but I didn't mind too much. I didn't do laundry but did clear off most of my drying rack. I folded up all the new tea-towels too.

I watched Ben Affleck's Gone Baby Gone and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I know that it was based on a book by the same author as Mystic River, and there were some similarities to that film's feel, but I really enjoyed it. I had heard it was good, but hadn't been able to see before. I'm not sure if I like Casey Affleck that much. The only things that I've really seen him in have been this and The Assassination of Jesse James (I'm discounting the Ocean's movies as he isn't one of the main actors) and his voice is quite monotonous.

For lunch I had my usual omelette, plus half an avocado. Yum. It was nice. I took off to the school and made pretty good time. I was there right at 5 pm today.

I got my school cooled down (it was over 30C in there today) and the water ready for coffee and then waited for my student. And waited. She called a little later to say she wasn't coming to class. She was quite busy at work and hadn't finished. Poor thing.

I set aside her materials and got ready for my next class. After that, I read up on the new textbook that I have to start on Saturday (should be okay) and then finished the newspapers.

My class today was okay. The students have been away for two weeks and have forgotten everything. Sigh. We were doing review and it was a good thing. Still we had quite a fun lesson. The little one knows some words that her sister doesn't and it's quite funny to see her use them--correctly too I might add.

After class I did my paperwork, and cleaned up the classroom. I put the chair away, and got out tomorrow's stuff. Then F called me. He asked me if we had the interview tonight. Nope, tomorrow night. He did have to call a potential student tonight though. Then, getting a suspicious thought in my head, I asked him where he was. Parked outside my school. Argh! I asked him to pick up my bike and then come in the school.

When he came in I was a little surprised. He was all dressed up. He really did think tonight was the interview. It was sweet of him, but also annoying. I hadn't finished up the things I like to get done and had to coach him on what to say to the potential student. We finished and then left the school.

We got tonight's dinner from the grocery store. We had tempura and gyoza. It was okay, not great. I didn't really like the gyoza, and the reheated tempura was quite greasy.

And that's about it for me. It was a quiet evening. F went to bed a while ago but isn't sleeping. He's tossing and turning. I should probably get to bed soon. I swore I'd be earlier tonight. I've turned into a real night owl. Sigh.

    Night!

    August 19, 2009 - Wednesday

Hot and sunny, but quite muggy today.

A good day. I stayed up late reading again, so had to drag myself out of bed this morning to check for news. Didn't find any either, so went back for a lie-in/extra nap. Got up later and did my computer stuff.

In the afternoon, I had some leftovers for lunch and then got busy. I decided to tackle my computer corner. I haven't finished, but it's greatly improved. I moved my file boxes from the top of the desk to the shelf underneath. That means I can now see the TV better, plus it's easier to get to the telephone/fax machine. Kind of a win win for me. I boxed up some of my books, and unboxed others. I decided to list a few more on Bookmooch (unfortunately, not working too well at the moment) and shredded a bunch of stuff with my name on it. I just hate how everything in this country comes with my name on it in big letters. Yuck. Case in point, UNICEF. Yes, I know they do amazing work, but 3 years ago I made a donation and they've been sending me requests for more money ever since. I wouldn't mind as much if the requests were in English, but they aren't. They very helpfully even fill out my name on the donation form. Except, I'm not making a donation. And, then there's the fact that I usually get at least 2 catalogues from them every summer and winter. TWO. They are exactly the same. I wrote them and asked to be taken off their mailing list but they refused! I do think they've cut it down to one catalogue at a time though.

Anyway, I also vacuumed the apartment today, and did a bunch of small jobs that really don't need mentioning. Except if I don't, my hubby will never notice that they're done!

In the evening we decided to do a bit of shopping. Hubby took me to one of those restaurant supply stores and I got a bunch of frozen food. Yay. I also went to the drug store-I bought one thing, so it was a quick trip. I didn't want my frozen stuff to melt! We brought the food home. The original plan was to do our errands and then bike to the restaurant for dinner, but I was hungry! I asked that we not bother getting more food for tomorrow night, and just go to the restaurant now. So we did. Sort of. F just took his own sweet time coming out of the apartment. I was getting more and more annoyed with him, and even came back to find out what the hold up was. He was looking for our point card. After 10 minutes of searching I told him to just forget it. We biked to the restaurant.

We had a nice meal. F wanted to bike so that he could have a beer. I wanted the exercise, so it was fine with me. He did do that thing where he was trying to get me to eat his food again. He just goes about it the wrong way. If he'd say to me, "Would you like to try this?" I might, but being told that he ordered his dish to share with me is a bit condescending. If it was to share, then he should have consulted me about it in the first place, right? Then, he got dessert as part of his set and announced that it was for me. Huh? If I wanted dessert I would darn well have ordered some for myself. The thing was, I ordered my meal with the specific plan not to need dessert. I didn't eat dessert today! The restaurant was showing the Disney channel as usual and tonight it was Homeward Bound : The Incredible Journey. I'm glad it wasn't the original one as I would have been crying from seeing the gorgeous Siamese. Seeing the Himalayan cat was bad enough. She ran just like our cat. (Sorry, need a minute....getting verklempt....talk amongst yourselves....)

We came home afterwards and had a quiet evening. Watched a bit of Ugly Betty, and then F found a British drama for me. I had already seen it, but British drama reruns beats anything Japanese anyday, so I watched it to the end of the episode. F went to bed.

Tomorrow I'm back to work. I have a couple of evening classes. If I get motivated enough tomorrow I'll finish cleaning around my computer corner. The big pain thing are my books. I have so many that I don't have any place to put them. That's one of the reasons I bookmooch so much. And, I need to do laundry too. Maybe. I might save that one for Friday though.

    Night.

PS...The point card was in with his license. He found it in the restaurant. Gah!

    August 18, 2009 - Tuesday

    Hot and sunny. Yay.

A good day today. I got up before my alarm today and stayed up. That was a little amazing! I watched the news too. Hurray.

I had a quiet little morning really. I showered, and then watched Hollywoodland. I'd been hoping to see it. I think I might need to rewatch it some time as I didn't quite get the point.

I went off to my school early today. It was quite hot in there, but I got it cooled off quickly. I've discovered that a combo of the AC and a fan works quite well.

My student and I had a good class. She's been busy for a while, but will come next week to class as well. Yay. After her class, I did up the paperwork, then I set up the tape recorder again to make tapes for my use in the classroom. I got two done, which was quite good I thought.

About 15 minutes before my next class I got a call from my student. Her Obon visitors hadn't left yet, so she had to take care of them. I used the time to set up for my next two classes on Thursday, then finished the puzzle in the newspaper. Then I called F.

He picked me up and we came home. He made nameru for us, the Korean style pickled veggies, and when it was a good time, I made coffee and then fried the marinated pork. I'd put on some Worchester sauce during the day and it was a big hit. It adds a nice flavour to the pork chops. We had a kind of pudding/custard thing too.

Before we ate, F called a lady that had emailed me this morning. We're going to do an interview on Friday night with her. I met this lady through a student, so I hope it goes well. She seemed really nice.

And that was about that. F is really tired these days. I think it's the heat and the humidity, although that is slightly better now the rain has stopped.(crosses fingers, knocks wood)

Tomorrow I'm not sure what I'll do, check back and find out eh? Night!

    August 17, 2009 - Monday

    Hot and sunny. I think it's a trend...knock wood.

I have a habit of grabbing a book to read for the few seconds that I need to sign into one of my blogsites. While the computer is doing its thing, I can get a page or two read. Lately my book has been New Moon, the Stephenie Meyer novel and it finally got interesting last night. The result....yours truly didn't go to bed until almost 4. Sigh.

When I did get up this morning it was a pretty touch and go affair, but I did it. There wasn't any news on right away, but I caught the beginning (and then the middle and ending) of The Day After Tomorrow and got sucked in again. I had a quiet morning around the apartment and was delighted to find that I could see both US and UK news on NHK at noon. Yay. After the news was over I decided to go out.

I went to the post office first to make a payment for the book shipment I got last week. I got a bit stuck on how to do it, so I asked the guy, and he showed me. It was a simple thing. I thought I had to press the screen first, then put the payment form in, but it was the other way around, payment form first, then press the buttons. Simple when you know how. Then, I headed off on my bike to Kaneta.

Kaneta is a little clothing and household goods store that is near my apartment. Sometimes I can find amazing stuff in the shop, other times, nothing. I often get reasonably priced children's clothing for my niece and nephew there so I had a look around. I took my time, poked into many nooks and crannies, but didn't find much today. Then, just as I was ready to leave, I noticed some cool tie-dyed t-shirts. They were just Japanese enough to be interesting, but not so out there that my niece couldn't wear them. I picked one out, checked all the seams and that there weren't any mysterious holes or stains and decided to get it. I also got us more dish towels for the apartment. The ones we have now are getting quite yucky so I think I'll cull the lot of them. I paid and biked home.

When I got home I was surprised to see our car in the parking lot. I went in the apartment and there was hubby. He told me that his mother hadn't been feeling well and asked him to take her to the doctor. The doctor she wanted to see was still on holiday, so he took her to her home and then came home. Hmm. We watched Criminal Minds while I showed him the t-shirt and washed the towels I just bought.

He ended up taking a nap while I watched my afternoon telly. Good! He doesn't get to come home and make me miss Re:Genesis! Later, I joined him for a bit of a snuggle.

We had dinner tonight at Edoichi. It was okay. I hadn't eaten during the day, so I was quite hungry. Hubby was too, so it was probably a good choice.

After dinner we went to MaxValu so I could restock my supply of sunflower seeds. We also got the fixings for tomorrow's dinner. F is going to make nameru and I'm going to do pork chops in Worchestershire sauce. Yum.

We came home and watched a rather strange Nicole Kidman film that I had taped last night. It was good, but offbeat. F watched it with me and we both agreed that it was a little hard to understand.

And that's my day. It was quite good. I managed to get a couple of my goals done for the day--post office, Kaneta, and I spent extra time with my hubby. Catch you tomorrow? Night.

    August 16, 2009 - Sunday

Hot and sunny. What is that, 3 days in a row now? Is summer here?

I stayed up late last night, which of course means that I stayed in bed late today too. Oops. It was after 12 before I got up. Happily, F was amusing himself by watching TV and was in a good mood.

We decided to go out for lunch, and decided on Trenta, the new pasta place. It was okay. We had their pasta set again. This time the pizza was a bit soggy, so it wasn't as good, but the pasta was fine. It was okay. After lunch, we went to the nearby hardware store and I got some new blank video tapes, some cleaners for my school and some cassettes too. F found himself a new wallet while we were there. I am greatly relieved. His old one didn't have a change section, so he carried an old granny style coin purse. Argh.

After the shopping I was thirsty, so I offered to treat us to coffee or a nice drink somewhere. We couldn't find a nice coffee shop anywhere, so we went to Doutors in the mall and had drinks. That was rather nice.

We came home in the afternoon and just vegged. We didn't really do that much. Finally around 7 I suggested that we go out for dinner. We went to Kintaro sushi. It was still really crowded, and we had to wait a good 20 to 30 minutes for a seat. After we were seated, we had quite a bit of sushi, but honestly, not as much as usual. They stopped the conveyor belt after a while and while I can order and read the menu, I prefer to pick what's interesting.

We came home after sushi and I found that Transporter 2 was on. It's not as fun as Transporter, but it stars JASON STATHAM. Hurray. So, we watched it again. Yes, it's not a great film, but the action is fast and furious and fun. Plus, it has the Stath. Mmm mmm mmm.

I watched a bit more TV tonight. I saw Oops again, which was fun, and then 2 episodes of Weeds. For some reason, when anyone lit a joint or some other way of smoking marijuana, they blurred the pixels, like they do with nude scenes in movies. Huh? Just seemed weird.

That was pretty much my day. It was quite good, low key, but in a good way. Tomorrow, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Come back tomorrow night and find out. Night!

    August 15, 2009 - Saturday

Sunny, a little cloudy, but a nice day. Hooray!

I tried to go to bed last night and get my hubby to come with me, but he was firmly fixed to the chesterfield. Gah. I went to bed anyway, left the door open for him and the light on. I fell asleep briefly, but he muttered something so I got up, gave him one last chance, then went into the bedroom and closed the door. I slept well after that! I could have handled the lights, or the muttering but not both. I had to work today too, so I really didn't want problems getting enough sleep.

I did a washroom run in the morning and he woke up and decided to go to bed after that. I got up for good after nine and did my shower thing. He snoozed on.

We had a nice brunch at Gusto and then I was dropped off at my school. I checked over my lesson and also made sure that I had everything ready for the student. She came and we had a good lesson. Today we finished the textbook. She's learned so much, and she's changed a lot too. In the beginning she didn't speak a lot, but these days, she's really trying to tell me about her life.

In the time between the lessons I got busy. I did a load of laundry and started taping the new cds. I prefer to use a cassette in my classroom, rather than a cd player. I find it's very hard to program the cd player properly. I set the recorder up and did paperwork as well. Yay for me. I can honestly say that I used my time rather well today.

At 5 pm I was ready for my student, but she didn't come. Hmm. After 10 minutes, I gave her a call. She was going to the circus with a friend. Say what??? She told me that she'd cancelled her lesson with my husband (true, the lesson for August 1st...) and I had emailed her to confirm the rescheduling to August 15th. She had replied, confirming the date of her next lesson as August 15th. Hmm. Houston, we have a problem. She booked for next week, but I'm not planning to give her a make up for today's lesson.

After calling her, I set up for Tuesday's first class and then called my husband. He came to get me and we went to McDonald's drivethrough. I got a tea and a piece of chicken, he got ice cream. We were on the road, but to where? Tamasudare Falls, that's where!

We drove for hours in the dark and then arrived. We walked up the mountain a bit. It was pitch dark and we didn't have a flashlight, so it was a bit scary. But, we got there finally, and it was beautiful. The falls are the highest in Yamagata-ken, and during this month they light them up at night. It was very cool. I took a few pictures, they aren't great, but they are okay.

We came back via the Cocos at Mikawa. At home, we really had a quiet night. I watched Celebrity Apprentice and thought about how the people aren't really that famous.

F went to bed, and really, I'm heading that way too. I'm quite tired and I don't know what we're going to be doing tomorrow.

    Talk to you tomorrow. Night!

    Tamasudare Falls, Sakata, Yamagata-ken

    August 14, 2009 - Friday

Hot, sunny, not rainy. It felt like summer today. Yay.

I had a quiet morning at home. I got up on time and watched news. Amazing. It was on. I showered and then got on with my day. I watched a lot of TV, but nothing too memorable.

I went to work via the drugstore. I had a good ride there and got myself some "stuff". I had a good poke around the store and even saw some clothes that I thought might work for me...and one or two things that I even kind of liked. I'm going home next month or I might even had tried something on.

I went to the school and it was hot. I cooled it down, and did a bit of prep for the day. When my student arrived we had a surprisingly good lesson and we were both laughing by the end. My student isn't a careful reader and he mixed up the words "Kate" and "kite". So today he read the sentence, "She's in the park flying a Kate." I thought it was really funny. He understood why it was funny too, and laughed just as hard as I did.

After class I prepped for tomorrow, did a little reading and then finally headed out. I rode to Marumatsu and had a nice dinner. I had tempura, soba and sushi. It was quite nice. When I finished I went to McDonalds for a Flurry. I got it to take out, but they didn't put it in a bag or anything. I suppose I could have asked for one, but I was too surprised. I stuffed a napkin in the top, put it gingerly in my backpack and biked off home.

At home I discovered that my husband was still out, so I parked my bike and went in the apartment. I ate my flurry, and then got on with my night.

F finally showed up after 2 am. He is quite inebriated, but is feeling good. He rarely goes out to parties, I often have to twist his arm to go, so I'm quite happy about the whole thing.

Anyway, my day is over, so I'm going to get myself off to bed soon. I have a couple of classes tomorrow. I have 3 hours in the middle and a lot of things planned to do then, so I should get some sleep.

    Night night!

    August 13, 2009 - Thursday

Dark and rainy. Did I mention it was dark? Or rainy? It was.

I got up this morning but didn't really believe my alarm because it was that dark in my bedroom. Unbelievable! It was pouring with rain. Sigh. I got up for a bit, did some internet stuff, and then tried to go back to bed for a nap. Shame to waste all that darkness. Didn't happen. It was too humid.

I had a quiet afternoon at home. I watched a cooking show about Italian food. It was okay, but bring back the Tim Gunn fashion show I say, bring back Tim Gunn.

I watched the shows I taped yesterday and then Romancing the Stone when it came on the telly. Man I love that film. It has good memories for me. I bought the novel when I lived in Edson, read it, loved it, and loaned it to my mum. She read it, loved it, and we both said that we'd HAVE to see the movie. The story was fun, and also it had an afterword? foreword? from Michael Douglas talking about how much fun he thought the story was. Sadly, the author died in a car crash before the film came out. (Which might also explain why the sequel wasn't as good.) Anyhoo, I think Romancing the Stone might have been one of the last films that my sister and I saw with our Mum. I think we drove to Edson to see it.

During the film, I cooked and ate my lunch. I had a taco omelette. Yummy! So good. The next film was The Forbidden Kingdom. I had wanted to see it for the Jet Li-Jackie Chan match up, but overall wasn't a great movie. Just okay. Glad I didn't pay to see it.

F came home quite late and after a while we decided to go out for dinner. We went to the Grand El Son and it was nice tonight. I had fish and F had meat. Everything was very delicious. We came home via the grocery store for milk and bagels.

At home we watched Untraceable, the movie I taped for F last night. When I first started dating him he had a Diane Lane poster up in his room. I didn't make him take it down, he just did. I think it might have been when I asked if I could put one of Russell Crowe up! (Actually, I don't think I ever did that.) The movie was only so so.

I should probably say that I'm really happy that WOWOW is running so many movies during the day. Usually during the Japanese holidays there is nothing on. Tsuruoka actually had its Obon in July, but the whole thing is sort of a non-holiday for me.

Anyway, that's about it for me. It was a good day. Tomorrow night I have one class and then I'll take myself out for dinner. Hubby has a party tomorrow night and won't be coming home for dinner. I really hope it doesn't rain tomorrow night. Wish me luck with that!

    Night.
