Mt. Gassan

Today we didn't have any real plans so after lunch we took the car out for a little spin. We drove up Mount Gassan, one of the Dewa Sanzen mountains. They are the local sacred mountains.

The road was incredibly twisty and narrow. At one point we came across a car that had run one wheel off the road into the deep ditch next to the road. There were at least 5 cars backed up in both directions. However, as I said to my husband, I have to give credit to Japanese people, a group of men helped the driver. They jacked up the car as far as they could and then a group of them (including my DH) lifted the car back onto the road. Everyone worked so well together, and as a team. There were bows all round and we all drove off afterwards.

Fumihiko heading off up the mountain a little way.

Some offerings on the mountain.

I only had my cell phone with me today, and it was hard to see what I was photographing. The colours were truly beautiful, very red, very yellow, and still, lots of green. A lovely drive!
