In Memoriam - John Hughes

Last week we lost a great director and writer of films. John Hughes died at the age of 59 on August 6, 2009.

I didn't know John Hughes, but I knew and loved many of his films. They are films that I've made my husband watch, because they were about me, my life as a teenager. I never did drugs, never had detention, but often felt alienated and alone. Hughes' films were amazing because they were real. There were people, real people in his films.

I believe that the first Hughes film I saw was The Breakfast Club. I went to see it by myself and was stunned. I was just out of my teens, but still felt like a teenager. I continued being surprised and amazed by his other films.

Although, John Hughes hadn't directed films for a while, he did continue to write, albeit under a pseudonym. I was surprised to discover that he wrote a film my husband loved, Maid in Manhattan.

I will miss John Hughes and his way of writing about the difficult times in our lives.

While I was surfing I found an amazing blog entry from a woman who was his pen pal for a time.

For more information about Hughes and his filmography, a good place to start is IMDb.
