Friday - Rainy, then sunny.

A good day!

I had a horrible night last night. After fighting with my husband, when I finally went to bed I couldn’t sleep. I was cold. Freezing cold and I couldn’t get warmed up. I finally got up for a few minutes and sat in the living room before going back to bed. In that time I’d put on a sweater and also a pair of socks. I couldn’t sleep because of the cold and my husband’s snoring. Usually it is me that keeps him awake, but last night, he was quite loud. I tried to put in my earplugs, but I couldn’t get comfortable with them in so I took them out.

When I did wake up this morning around 9 with my alarm, I slept on. Ditto the 10 am one. I dragged myself out of bed, said hello to my husband and checked the time of the big wedding in the newspaper. I told F that I wanted to see the wedding tonight.

After I showered and got dressed he came and asked how I was. I told him about not sleeping and basically feeling not very good this morning. He was very nice to me.

We went out for lunch around 1 pm. His first suggestion didn’t pan out, and my first suggestion didn’t either. Then I remembered that there was a new restaurant close to the place we were parked, so we decided to check it out. It was an offshoot of a bigger restaurant in Yunohama and they had a couple of lunch specials. One was pasta with cheese sauce, the other was a big waffle with egg, bacon, salad, potato salad and a drink. We both had the waffle and it was good. They even let me choose between fried egg and scrambled egg, so I was happy. It’s a tiny little place, but quite cute! They also had some J-Pop on their TV, but it was quite good. The program they showed even had my favourite Masaharu Fukuyama song playing, so I was REALLY happy!

After lunch we went to the hardware store and had a snoop around. We ended up getting a few things. When we were in line for the checkout, the man ahead of us pulled his son over to look at me and said to him basically, “Say hello to the foreigner”. Both F and I rolled our eyes at that. Poor kid just stood there.

Next up, we went to the Art Forum in Tsuruoka. There was an exhibition we’d seen advertised and we decided to go. It was by an African artist, El Anatsui. It was very cool. Some of his more recent works resemble cloth, but they are made from bottle caps wired together and are quite intriguing. F and I sat on the benches and looked at the works and discussed them. I think we were in the Forum for a couple of hours, but it was an interesting couple of hours.

As the coffee shop in the Art Forum was closed, we went to Mr. Donuts and had a drink and a doughnut each. That was nice. Around 5:30 though, I said that we had to get home to watch the wedding.

We turned on the telly and the Japanese announcers were going on about stuff. I couldn’t understand, but in retrospect, it was probably good for F’s understanding of the proceedings. I really expected him to get bored or go to sleep, but he didn’t. He seemed just as interested as I was! The best part was that as Kate Middleton arrived at the church, NHK let the BBC reporters take over, so the ceremony was beautifully covered in English by the Beeb. Hurray! Catherine looked lovely. The dress was gorgeous…not a frilly frou-frou thing like Diana’s. Everything seemed to go well from my perspective and I enjoyed it immensely.

After the ceremony, F and I had to eat, so I set up to tape the Royal appearance on the balcony at Buckingham Palace and we went for dinner.

Tonight we planned to go to Cocos, but ended up at Jiro. We had our favourite pork saute in garlic oil and it was so very good. Yum.

We came straight home afterwards, watched Glee and then Desperate Housewives while I made some caramel popcorn. After that, we rewound the tape and watched the balcony scene.

F has finally gone to bed and I’ll be off soon too. I’m quite tired, but happy to have had a good day. I just hope we can keep this up! Night!
