Saturday - Sunny, rainy and cloudy
Today was a surprisingly good day. There was a bit of a spat in the middle, but it all blew over and we had a good time anyway.
I woke up when my alarm went off at 10 am and went downstairs. F had just come back from his doctor and was feeling a bit better. I suggested that I bake the buns that I forgot to bake yesterday. F had made some coffee, so the three of us got together at the kotatsu and had baked buns with jams or cream cheese or butter and coffee. It was very nice actually.
Over our breakfast, F suggested going to Akita to see the falls that I had wanted to see this weekend. I was surprised and a little worried. It was extremely sunny and I haven’t had much sun exposure these days. I did go upstairs and started getting ready. I found my new sunscreen, opened it up and put some on.
At the car, F and I had a little spat. I told him I was worried about the sun and he said we shouldn’t go then we did…the usual silliness. We drove north using the highway and were near Mt. Chokai quite quickly. We took a break and had ice cream. We had dadacha-mixed cones. Nice, but we didn’t get a big hit of the dadacha-mame (the local edamame).
A few minutes later, we made it to the parking lot near the waterfalls. We parked and then walked off towards the falls. It was a nice walk. A lot of it was under the trees and along a stream, so it was cool and the sun wasn’t very strong there. It was quite cloudy now anyway.
The falls weren’t huge, but they were pretty, and the walk to get to them wasn’t overly strenuous. I made it without any difficulty so that was good. We saw a very cool bug along the way. It was big and looked like a ladybird, but instead of dots, it had a sort of design on its back.
As always, please click on the photos to see them bigger...

By the time we got to the falls and then back, it was getting close to 3:30 or so. We walked back to the car. I saw a couple of signs just up the road. Neither of us could read the signs from our distance, so F suggested driving the car up to see the signs. I said it was okay.
We tried driving the car, but the signs weren’t for anything important, so F decided to turn the car around. Unfortunately, he didn’t notice that the place he tried to turn had a big stump in the middle and the car got stuck on it. I was just in the midst of telling him to be careful when we stopped moving! F checked it out, but we were quite stuck. I ended up getting out of the car and then pushing a little and that was enough to get us unstuck. Whew. I don’t think the car was damaged, we checked a couple of times.
We drove to the nearest roadside stop. This place was redone a couple of years ago and they have a lovely food court with all kinds of food on offer. It’s great when you are going out with picky people like F! Sadly, the place I really wanted to go was out of hamburgers (they have good ones) so I ended up at the pasta place. It was good, so I didn’t mind. F got ramen which he didn’t like!
We walked around after our late lunch and did a little window shopping. We came back and then around 5 decided to drive back to Tsuruoka. I fell asleep in the car, so poor F had to do it alone!
We stopped in at a grocery store to get K some food for her dinner and then went back to the house. F and I came upstairs for a bit. Neither of us was hungry right away.
We went out around 8:30 for dinner. We tried one place but it was full, so we decided to go for sushi to Kula. It was okay. They had sold out of a few things, but we managed to have an okay meal.
We just came back to the house afterwards and relaxed. I took a shower and then I’ve been on my computer ever since.
I’m not sure what we’ll get up to tomorrow. We might go to a movie and I’ve asked if I can go shopping for my niece’s birthday present. I’m not quite sure if I can send her something as no one knows if the mail is working properly yet.
Come back later if you like and see what happens. Until tomorrow….
