Friday - Cloudy & rainy

Today did not go as expected. It got off to a weird little start. I went to bed around my usual time. F got up just after, went downstairs and I was asleep before he came back, I think.

This morning, I felt him get up as the bed shook a bit and then I heard him talking. His mother had come upstairs, knocked on the door with the purpose of checking on his health. It was around 6:45am. She was worried about his stomach. He was fine. Last night he was fine, there was no reason for her to come upstairs or check on his health. He sent her off on her way, he went downstairs, I went downstairs and went back to bed. F had a little naplet before getting up and going off to work.

8:15 there was a tap on the door. I heard it this time as I wasn’t wearing my ear plugs. I got up and there was K again outside my door. She was checking on F again. I told her that he was at work. She didn’t understand me (and yes, I did use Japanese—she’s very deaf). Then she got it. I told her in English to go back downstairs and leave me alone! We ended up shouting at each other, I have no idea what she was going on about. It was before my first alarm even was scheduled to go off and I am NOT a morning person!

She left finally and I went back to my bed. I texted F and told him about what just happened. He called me back a few minutes later and said that he’d come back to the house.

I got dressed and waited for F to come back. He talked about what he’d do about the situation. I made some hot water and he had some coffee and talked about the morning. I did some laundry that needed to be done today and F called the mental hospital in Tsuruoka and talked about his mother and asked what he needed to do for them to evaluate her. They gave him some information so it looks like the ball will start rolling soon. It probably won’t go anywhere for now, but I’m relieved that F is trying something.

I am most worried about K coming upstairs. The stairs are steep and there isn’t a handrail. She’s ninety years old and not that steady on her feet. Coming upstairs isn’t that bad, but going downstairs can be scary. I’m worried that she’s going to fall down the stairs and I’ll get blamed for it.

Anyway…F asked that we go for lunch and wanted to leave at 11:10. I was okay with that. My laundry came out of the washing machine at about 10:45 and I hung it up. I was already dressed for going out, so we were fine to leave.

We went to F’s Eel restaurant and parked in one of their spaces. We were really early and the restaurant wasn’t open yet! We waited for a while and then were able to go in. We had a good but very large meal at the restaurant. We had sashimi, fried fish and shrimp, fish stew, miso soup and a couple of side dishes. When F went to pay, the restaurant guy said that he couldn’t make change and told F he could come back and pay anytime!

The restaurant guy told F about a coffee shop that has recently opened by a former classmate of F’s…from elementary school or something. Anyway, we went looking for it and then ended up there. We went in and had a cup of coffee each. They had decaf and also had Christmas tea too, so I might go back for some of that! The coffee was nice, and having the chance to sit on a couch was great too.

F let the woman know that they were former classmates as we were leaving and she was surprised and said she remembered him!

Next up, we went to a hardware store where F went in and bought a new door handle with a lock for our bedroom.

We came back to the house and I went back to bed and had a long nap. I was falling asleep in the coffee shop and I missed out on my long lie in so…. F changed the door handle and then spent some downtime upstairs.

I got up in time to watch the US news and then watch more videos. I went downstairs around 6pm to cook dinner.

Tonight was my usual pasta night, so we had spaghetti with a Japanese sauce, choleggi salad, black pepper chicken breast and some salt butter bread toasted. That was very popular.

The weird thing about dinner is that K was all smiley and absolutely fine. I not sure she even remembers what happened this morning. She seemed to enjoy dinner and especially the toast.

I did the dishes afterwards and then went upstairs. I checked with F and he is planning a haircut after he takes K to her day service. So, I put off my shower until tomorrow and watched a movie from Apple TV. It was a film from last year, Eternity with Elizabeth Olson, Miles Teller and Callum Turner. It was cute and also quite thoughtful.

F has gone to bed and sleep but hasn’t turned off the light in that part of the room. I’m yawning away here and would like to get to bed soon.

I’m not sure what we’ll get up to tomorrow. I’d like to go and see a film tomorrow night if we can swing it, but apart from that, I have no plans.

Come back later if you like and hear all about my day. Until tomorrow….
