Tuesday - Rainy, clear and sunny, cooler
An okay day. I got up at a reasonable time and stayed up, mostly! I took my shower quite early for me and then went on my computer for a bit. After a couple of hours I took a mini-nap. I couldn’t sleep for too long.
After my nap, I finished my computer stuff and started making lunch. While I did it I watched part of a Gregory Peck film that was quite interesting. I didn’t catch the beginning, but basically he was a reporter/writer who pretended that he was Jewish so that he could write an article on prejudice towards Jewish people. It was quite interesting, and the bit that I saw was quite intriguing. I have no idea how it ended though as I had to leave for work.
I made good time today and got set up quite quickly. My student was a couple of minutes late, but we got to work after a little chat. We had a good class, but I think she worries too much!
I had a break in between her class and the next, so I read a bit and did a little prep for another class. Sadly, my next student couldn’t come today, but she did call me at least and didn’t leave me in limbo.
I took the free time to do a bit of a clean in the school. I vacuumed and dusted and generally made things a little neater. I did a little research as well.
After a while, I had a cup of tea and decided to call F and get him to pick me up. I called and he came over.
Tonight I suggested going to a Japanese place that he likes. It was a good move as it was open later tonight and we both had some nice fish. This is one of the few places he takes me to where I enjoy the food and he doesn’t complain about it afterwards. Amazing. I hadn’t planned to have a donburi, but it was quite good.
We bought some groceries on the way home. I’m going to do pasta with chicken. I just hope it works out!
We had a quiet evening at home. F watched a lot of sports so it wasn’t really quiet, we didn’t talk much is what I meant. At 11:30 we watched Undercover Boss. It was good and quite different. The guy got fired from the company he built! Most of the employees did a good job, but one lady didn’t and apparently is no longer with the company.
Well, that’s about it for me. I have decided to finish up my shawl from this point on, so tonight I started the edging. I think it’ll be okay, I just hope I have enough yarn to do it. It’s very pretty, but the dark colour in the variegation looks more like dirt than a contrast. It’s a bit sad!
Tomorrow I’m off work. I wonder what I’ll get up to! Talk to you then. Night.

Gentleman's Agreement! I've seen that movie many times, but somehow this time it seemed just a little too preachy, too many speeches -- I think they should've left out the mother character. And I like the women's magazine editor, played by Celeste Holm (who was so good in All About Eve), much more than the girlfriend. There was a conversation years ago on Fe-mail where a member's son was being bullied by classmates, taunted as "America-jin" and she (not American) had told her son that he wasn't American, to tell them that -- I pointed out that that was exactly what happened in Gentleman's Agreement (it had recently been on TV): the reporter's son had come home crying because the boys at school called him names for being Jewish and the WASP girlfriend reassured him, Why, don't mind, Tommy, you aren't really Jewish! Then Gregory Peck got mad -- that's how these things continue! Even if you're not the group that's being discriminated against, you should be just as angry, it's unacceptable.
Yesterday I watched Chinatown, I wasn't going to, but the story is so complicated that I can never remember it, so I watched. Today was The African Queen, which I've not seen all the way through. I think that now that I'm old, I can relate to the story much better. I loved the first scene where Humphrey Bogart, all dirty and sweaty and boozy, has tea with the very proper minister and his sister (in white lace in the humidity of Africa), and Bogart's stomach keeps growling and finally he says "Not a thing I can do about it."
My favorite Gregory Peck movie is To Kill a Mockingbird. Hope they show that one too.
Yes! That was the name. I saw it in the paper afterwards...but couldn't remember when I was blogging. I hadn't seen it at all before. I hope they run it again so I can see it all the way through. I thought the bit that I saw was well done.
Chinatown...I've never seen it. I'm not a fan of Jack Nicholson, and it came out when I was quite young so just never bothered. I know I should!
The African Queen...love that one. I had to be at work early today so couldn't watch it, but I just recommended it in my last movie column! Bogie was so great in that...I remember seeing that one with my sister when we were quite young and both of us just loving it. (My sister and I have quite opposite tastes a lot of the time!)
And (deep breath) I've never seen To Kill a Mockingbird and I've never read the book either.
I'm sitting here wondering if it is more of a US phenomenon? I don't think I ever had it assigned to me in school.
