Wednesday - Cold and Snowy in the mountains

Akemashita Omedito Gozaimasu! Happy New Year!

We’re back from Yamagata for our annual New Years Costco run with lots of treasures and having had a good time.  We saw a movie in Yamagata, A Ghost Story, which was rather interesting.  Something that made it more interesting was a patron at the theatre had dressed up as the ghost in the film both before and after the film. It was a little strange, but also sort of cool.

I’m all over the place of course…On the first, F and I had lunch with K at the house. It was, of course, soba and I managed to eat it. I even almost enjoyed it. F ran a few errands and got K a few more things to eat, I did the dishes because I couldn’t run the errands.  We were on the road by 2 pm I think and made good time.

Our hotel as really nice and in a convenient location. We walked towards the cinema and had a light dinner on the way. F had taken me to a steak place on the 31st and I really hadn’t recovered from it yet. That and the huge soba for lunch meant that I really wasn’t too hungry. We had a few things at an Okinawa style izakaya and then went to the movie. We ordered popcorn, because that’s what we do, but got half of it as caramel corn. That stuff is noisy!  We were watching a very quiet film and it was so hard not to make a lot of noise. I think I managed mostly, F was quite hopeless!

After the movie, we walked back to the hotel but made a stop in a little grocery store for a few necessities.  The hotel had a lounge with soft drinks and coffee available for its guests, so we sat there for a while and just relaxed. That was nice.

We went back to the room. I watched a little TV and even did a couple of rows of knitting, but by 2 I was tired. F was on his phone quite late. I finally went to bed around 3, but I don’t think F fell asleep for a long time after that.

This morning, I got up fairly easily and F didn’t. We went to have breakfast at the hotel. It was good for the most part.

We checked out around 11 and drove to Costco. We did some shopping and put it in the car. We had a bit of a problem with the putting stuff in bags though. I’m trying to do it logically with cold stuff all together, but the staff and F threw stuff in any old way. Boo. Still, we made it back to the car. We came back into Costco for a light lunch and then left to go to the Aeon Mall.

At the mall, I did a little yarn shopping. I got a lot for 1000 yen and then F got himself a sweater. He bought me a couple of sweaters and a top later on, which was sweet.  We got some stuff at Kaldi and then left after having a drink. F wanted dinner in Yamagata, which I did think was a good idea as we’d have more choices. We went to an Indian Restaurant and had a yummy meal there. We shared some chicken Tikka and then had curries and naan. I chose a vegetarian one of cauliflower and potato, F had a saag chicken one. They were both excellent and we really enjoyed them. We ate all the food!

We drove back to Tsuruoka, stopping a couple of times for emergency shopping…F had a need for superglue….and washroom breaks.  The road was horrible. It was snowing in the mountains. The snowploughs were out in force but mostly on the other side of the road.

We were back at the house around 10 pm I think.  We unloaded the car, F checked on his mother who was in bed of course, and then we came upstairs to unwind and relax. Now you know all about my trip!

Come back later and see what the third brings. Until tomorrow….
