Saturday - Rainy
Despite going to bed rather late last night, I managed to get up this morning, in fact, I woke up before F this morning. We got up, he dressed and took his mother to her doctor, so I was in the house alone for a bit. I used the time to prepare for our trip and to make the bed.
We were originally planning to leave for Yamagata City around 9 am, but K needing to go to the doctor changed that. We left the house around 11 am and I insisted that we have lunch. It was basically my breakfast though. I had a salad at Gusto with grilled chicken. Some of it was good, but their dressing was 1000 Islands and I hated it. F was ornery and only had a bit of fried fish at the restaurant.
We got on the road and made good time. I was quite sleepy and snoozed on and off. We stopped at Sagae for a toilet break and a snack. We drove down to Kaminoyama and that’s when it all went pear-shaped. I thought that we were going to the onsen first, F thought we were going to Costco first. He drove to Costco and tried to park. I didn’t understand why he did that. To my mind, if we bought anything perishable, we wouldn’t want to leave it in the car for an extended period of time, right?
He looked for a place to go on his phone and we left Costco. He found a nice looking hotel and we stopped in. Bad news, the onsen was finished for the day for non-guests. Sigh. He decided to do a walkabout and took us to an old sento/onsen. It was very cheap. On the women’s side, the worker had to set up a special tap so that I could wash my hair. There was an old woman just sitting on the floor, not sure what she was really doing. The place looked like it was a hundred years old. There were no lockers, the facilities were old. To be fair, it was clean, but that’s about the only thing it had going for it.
When I tried to wash my hair, the water pressure was abysmal. And then, when I finally tried to get in the water, it was much too hot for me. As I dressed I was practically crying, I was so upset. I had planned that we’d go somewhere nice but F couldn’t stop watching boxing at the restaurant on his phone to look for somewhere nice for us to go. Of course, we might have been able to leave earlier if he’d not been watching videos.
I couldn’t talk to F when we left. I was so upset. I just felt that he’d gut-punched me again with his crap organization skills. He, in turn, was hugely annoyed and angry at me because I didn’t like it and was mad at him for taking me there.
He didn’t even want to go back to Costco, but I made him. Then he announced that he was tired after his bath. I told him he could stay in the car and I’d go around the store. He was okay with that until I asked him for some money because I wasn’t going to be able to buy all the stuff for us. He came with me, but all in all, I’d as soon he stayed in the car. If I asked him if he wanted to look at anything the answer was always no. I got a few things, but not as much as I usually do and I probably missed quite a lot of things out. We got cereal for me, avocados, blueberries, tissues, toilet paper, and a bunch of snack foods.
We paid and then took everything out to the car. On the way there I asked if he wanted to go back and get something to eat, and he did. We went back in and had a little late lunch. He had a hotdog and an ice cream, I had a black cherry sundae and a piece of pizza. It was really good, but of course, too much tomato.
F asked me if I’d go to another onsen on the way back to the house and I said I would. I’m a glutton for punishment I think. We started driving and we popped into the Aeon Mall in Yamagata to get a few things at Kaldi. We got some tea, a coffee thing, some different snack foods, no big deal.
We did pop into an electric shop on the way back, F wanted to price Drive Recorders for the car. It was a bit boring for me, but no big deal.
I snoozed a lot of the way back but woke up in Nishikawa. F drove us into the public onsen parking lot and we went inside. It was 8:20 and the onsen closed at 9:00pm…we just got there before the last entry time. We went our separate ways and I took ANOTHER bath. This was much better. There were lockers and decent washing stations. The bath itself was big and not quite as hot as the other one. I was able to sit in it for a few minutes.
As the onsen was closing soon, I came out and got dressed. This time, I hadn’t washed my hair, so I didn’t have a wet head. I went out to the lobby and met F who said he’d just come out too. I bought a drink for the road, and off we went.
We drove back to Tsuruoka and I suggested near the city that we go and have something to eat. I was hungry although F said he wasn’t. For a change, I suggested Coco Ichibanya, the curry shop. I had a spicy Indian style curry, F had a regular kind with clams and fish. Mine was good. For the first time, I wasn’t gasping for air.
After our meal, we came back to the house and unpacked the car. We had a surprising amount of stuff in the car.
We came upstairs and spent a quiet couple of hours here. F has gone to bed now. We sort of made up over the day. F isn’t enjoying the rainy weather and my sciatica did not like the car ride so we’re an achy duo.
That’s it for me. I’m not sure what we’ll get up to tomorrow. I’d like to go and see Spiderman which just opened, but I’m not sure I should sit for that long. Come back later and see what happens. Until tomorrow….
