Saturday - Cloudy, warm, humid and then very rainy
My alarm went off around 9:30 this morning, but I was already awake. That was neat. I went downstairs and then came back up and started to get dressed. I got mostly dressed and waited for F to come back. He did after a while. He had gone to the onsen and to his doctor, so he’d been busy.
When he came back, I finished getting dressed (I put on my shirt) and then we left. F found out that his mother had gone out with her daughter, so she wouldn’t be back until 1 pm.
F and I went off and had lunch and then filled up the car with gas. We did a quick grocery store run for drinks and a bento for K’s dinner. We came back to the house, dropped off the bento, did final toilet visits and then left. As we were going out to the car, K came back!
We said hello and goodbye and got on the road. We had a fairly easy drive to Yamagata, at least I think we did. I dozed off for a lot of the trip.
We stopped at Sagae at our usual rest-stop, then hit up the Aeon Mall in Yamagata. We put my watch in to get a new battery. I discovered it had died yesterday. I visited Kaldi and picked up more of my favourite rooibos tea. We paid for my watch and it is working again. Woot.
We hit up Costco and F parked in the handicapped parking. He is on crutches, although he doesn’t have a sticker. I’ve thought about getting one for him. We went and got F a new card because yes, he lost his card again. (This is card 3). After that, we went in. It wasn’t too busy as it was around 4 pm. I knew F wasn’t feeling great, he was tired and his stomach was on the verge of acting up. I suggested that he go to the food court and have something to eat or drink and wait for me. I told him I would call him when I was nearly ready to check out.
I had a great time going through the store. It wasn’t too terribly busy so it was kind of fun. It’s the first time I’ve really been able to do that by myself. I got most of the stuff on my shopping list, but not everything. I did get my most hoped-for item though, perogies. Yes! I couldn’t get some things, but I got most. Hurray.
I called F before I was quite finished and asked him if he wanted some rice. He said yes. I grabbed it and then told him I was done. We went through the checkout, got ourselves some dry ice and went back to the car. We packed the car with the groceries and then went back into the shop. I needed a washroom break and I was a tad hungry too. I asked F if he wanted to get dinner in Yamagata or wait until we got back to Tsuruoka. He chose to get it on the way. I had suggested a restaurant that was a little way out of Yamagata and he said okay.
I got a slice of pizza instead of the sandwich that I had my eye on, some ice cream and a drink. F got an ice cream too. We ate and drank and had a nice quiet time.
We got on the road and the weather was looking bad. It was cloudy and dark. We managed to drive out to Sagae again and went to the tonkatsu restaurant. F had the regular tonkatsu, I had an interesting dish with tonkatsu cut into little pieces, salad and rice and avocado. It was really nice. I got a few things with mine too. I had miso soup, chawanmushi and dessert too. I enjoyed it a lot.
When we left the restaurant it was pouring. F volunteered to get to the car quickly and then move the car so I could get in. That’s what we did and it worked out okay.
We had a good drive back to Tsuruoka. We made one pitstop because somehow I’d dropped my phone in the car and I couldn’t find it. It was dark in there and I was wearing a seatbelt. When we stopped, I grabbed my phone from the floor of the car and start charging it. Whew.
It was pouring still, and it rained most of the way back to Tsuruoka. We made it though.
When we got back to the house, the rain had calmed down. I suggested hurrying and getting the stuff inside, F watched rather a horrible video about a plane having problems landing in the car. I couldn’t find my key. It’s attached to my handbag, but it had ended up in the wrong pocket. My hands were full and I had to drop everything to finally find it. F took his own sweet time opening the door and then he disappeared into the washroom for the next 20 minutes. It was just enough time for me to unpack the groceries and freeze the bagels.
I was annoyed. We’d had such a nice day up til then, and he just buggers off. Getting tired of that.
I came upstairs, turned on the AC and checked my computer. I also got changed. It was hot in our room and I was sweating from being in the kitchen too.
I managed to watch one more episode of The Mentalist tonight and then I turned off the TV at midnight. I didn’t want to, but it gets late when I blog. I’m already half an hour later than I like to go to bed.
So, we did have a nice trip. I enjoyed getting out of Tsuruoka and going to the mall in Yamagata and to Costco. I’m hoping that we’ll be able to use some of the stuff that I bought soon. Fingers crossed anyway.
F seemed okay when he came back upstairs. He’s probably a bit tired, he couldn’t sleep in the car like I did!
Come back later if you want and hear all about what we get up to on Sunday. Until tomorrow….

Hi Helen! Sounds like a busy day. I haven't been to Costco in forever. I love to shop there but the sizes in America are so huge that I end up getting tired of whatever we buy before I get close to finishing the package. They do have some great cheeses here tho. I wish ours carried pierogies. I haven't had one of those in forever either!
Hope you're doing well otherwise!
Hi there! Thanks for visiting today.
The quantities in the Japan Costco are really big too...I have to be really careful about what we buy. There are only three of us and we don't go through that much. I have to freeze the bagels for example as eating 12 bagels myself would take a few days! They've had perogies before, but they were in a 1 Kg box...too big for my little freezer. These were in a smaller bag, so I thought I could fit them in and I did. Yay!
Sliced Havarti cheese is my reason for going to Costco. I love that stuff. I would buy more cheese but it is expensive, and I'm the only one who really loves it.
Doing okay. I'm looking forward to it getting cooler. This has been an odd summer weather-wise.
Lovely to hear from you again!
