Saturday - Sunny and warmish
Happy Birthday to my dear F!
We slept in this morning, well, I did anyway. I got up once or twice, but basically, I didn’t get out of bed until after 12. Bad me! We were both up quite late last night so I’m not sure why F was able to get up, but he was.
He made brunch for his mother and then the two of us went out for lunch. He tossed around a few ideas which I agreed with. I even agreed to a ramen shop because it was his birthday. However, we ended up at Kula Sushi. We had to wait a while to be seated as we didn’t make a reservation, but had a fairly good lunch. F even won a Star Wars magnet so that was nice.
We made a quick stop back at the house to pick up his phone, and then we went over to Komeda Coffee to have coffee and cake. We were there for a while, but it was okay. I get to a point where I almost fall asleep there. I’ve been drinking decaf and it’s hot and stuffy. They don’t bring round extra water unless you ask for it, and I never catch them when they have the water in their hands.
We did a quick grocery shop to get K a bento and a few things for the house and kitchen too. We delivered the bento and then went out for dinner. F didn’t really know what he wanted but kept coming back to yakiniku. I was worried about his stomach, but he said he’d be okay. We ended up going to the new place near the station…not that new now as it has been over a year since they opened. We were able to get a table right away and had a good if expensive meal.
I was looking forward to going back to the house and relaxing when F asked me when the movie at Machi-kine was. Gulp. The one that was on in 35 minutes. We had finished our meal anyway, so we paid and then drove up to the cinema.
We went to see Crawl tonight, a movie about alligators and people trapped in a flooding house during a hurricane. It was better than it sounds, but it was quite tense. It wasn’t MY choice, but F wanted to see it and it was his birthday, so I dealt! I watched a lot of the film from behind my hands!
After the movie, we came back to the house and relaxed. We both took showers and I’m still up listening to music and blogging away.
I have absolutely no idea what we are going to do tomorrow. I have to pick up my shoes from the shoe repair store, but apart from that, it is a mystery!
Come back later on and see what we get up to. Until tomorrow….

Hi Helen,
I've got a general life-style question. I know from other blogs that tax on food products has increased in Japan recently. In general, is the food or eating out very expensive or rather affordable to everyone even after they retire? Do you see many retirement-age people going out for most of their daily meals? I guess I want to know whether it is customary to eat out daily and if people are able to do it after they retire and live out of their pensions. I live in Tennessee, U.S.A., and definitely eating out that often would put a serious dent in my savings with food prices going up and up!
Love your blog,
Marta
Hi Marta, thanks for visiting and commenting.
To be honest, I rarely see retired people going out for dinner. In this area, they tend to be living with their extended families so there is probably a family meal every night. I do see gatherings of older ladies getting together for dinner or lunch from time to time. They are probably friends from school...the bonds of school are very strong here, and many people stay in the same area all of their lives.
There is no tipping here, so as long as you are careful and don't eat in really expensive places, it is quite reasonable to dine out a lot. As you mentioned, taxes have just gone up, so people are being more careful, but especially for lunch, it is possible to have a decent lunch for around 1000 yen, or about ten dollars Canadian anyway. For the next couple of months, if you use a cashless way to pay, there can be a slight decrease in the amount of taxes, so people are finally trying that out!
We do eat out a lot, but because F is a whole lot thriftier than I am, it tends not to be too expensive! I hope this helps!
