Saturday - Warm and sunny
Frustrating day.
I slept in late this morning and it was lovely. I did wake up early, but went back to sleep and really enjoyed being in bed. Yay me.
I got up finally, got dressed and waited for F to say what he wanted to do. He didn’t really think of much but did agree to go out for lunch. I suggested the place next to the Bussankan, the tonkatsu restaurant. He liked that idea.
We had a nice lunch there, we had the pair lunch. It was sautéed pork on rice and a nabe/tonjiru soup to share. Over lunch, F spent all of his time on his phone. Sigh. He had to leave to use the washroom. The building we were in didn’t have one, so we left to go to the main building. F wanted to go to the beach all of a sudden. I said it was fine if I could get my sandals first. My regular shoes are really porous and the sand gets in and stays in. F’s purpose to go to the ocean was to check out fishing spots. Okay.
In the big building, we were heading to the car and I suggested that F go in front of me because he kept stopping to look at things. If he was leading, I could see what he was doing and I’d stop too. He got angry at that. In the car, I said we should just go to the beach as it was getting late. He asked about my sandals and I told him I just wouldn’t get out of the car. He got mad and decided that he would go fishing instead.
We got back to the house and I unlocked the door, went inside and locked it behind me. I went upstairs feeling really sorry for myself. Somehow F always gets angry at me when I can’t read his mind. Then he came upstairs and asked me if I was ready to go fishing. Ummm, no. I told him that he said that “HE” was going fishing. I wasn’t invited. Then he said I could go. I didn’t really want to. I said I would but would need to change my clothes first as I was wearing all new clothes. Then he said he would go by himself. Okay then. Go!
He left the room and then came back 5 minutes later and threw himself back into the bed. He wasn’t going to go. We had a few more words. He didn’t understand that I said I would go. I think he was just being angry at the moment. Anyway, I changed my clothes and we did leave.
He stopped at a fishing shop for bait. I grabbed a drink and offered F one too. He said no but then bought himself one later. Okay.
We got to a place on the far side of the Aquarium and F set up my fishing rod first. It was all messed up so it took him ages to fix. I’m not sure what happened to it. He baited my hook for me, I threw it in the water, and a little later I caught a fugu (blowfish). He threw it back for me.
We fished for a while. I had a lot more luck than F did, I caught one more fugu and then two other fish. One was a saba (mackerel) and one was a maberu (rockfish/perch). F took them off the hook for me and put them in the cooler box. The sunset was gorgeous and it wasn’t too cold for a while. We finished up around 6 pm. It was quite dark and very hard to see to rebait our hooks. I had to do mine by my phone’s light!
We headed back towards Tsuruoka. We stopped at a drugstore on the way to wash hands and use the washroom. I bought a few things inside and F used the parking lot to order a nice bento for K. We picked it up and delivered it to her.
F took the opportunity to clean the fish. He’s going to grill them tomorrow for himself and K. I’m glad as I’m not a fan of mackerel and can’t remember how the other one tastes!

F and I went for sushi to Kintaro. We did have to wait a few minutes, but it was worth it. We had some lovely sushi.
After our dinner, we went out for dessert! We had Cocos Halloween dessert, drink bar and shared an order of fries. Cocos fries are darn good!

We came back to the house and came upstairs. I relaxed, F relaxed, it was nice. I did think it was a bit odd though when F gave me fishing advice tonight! Umm, I’m the person who actually caught fish tonight! I know he knows more about Japanese fishing than I do, but I have fished quite a bit in my life.
After midnight I spent some time looking up hotels in Niigata. F had mentioned he’d like to go away for his birthday over lunch. Originally he’d wanted a ryokan and I told him he’d have to book that, but tonight he said a regular hotel would be okay. I looked up hotels and told him about them, but when I gave him three different ones he just wasn’t interested. I stopped. I told him that since he didn’t seem to care, I didn’t either. I had given up quite a bit of time to look for hotels and it just wasn’t worth it. He could have had a nice birthday place or a cheap birthday place but he’s not going to get anything if he doesn’t show some interest.
He’s off to bed now and it’s probably a good thing. I’m quite annoyed with him.
Anyway, that’s it for today. I’m not sure what we’re going to get up to tomorrow. I hope it is a day with fewer misunderstandings than today was.
Come back later if you will and hear all about my day. Until tomorrow….
