Wednesday - Sunny but a bit cooler

Today was okay for the most part. I had my usual morning where I got up a wee bit late today and then watched the news from bed. I did snooze but got up a little early to grab my breakfast.

I watched a bit of YouTube again today and also worked on my ornament. I did that a lot today, I even finished it this evening. It looks a bit funny….

The Matrix was on today so I watched a bit of it and a bit of Revolutions I think. I didn’t watch it all though. It was pretty cool to see it again. It has been a while.

At 4 pm I watched the news and worked on my ornament.  Around 5:30 F called to say he was on his way back so I went downstairs to get started on dinner. In the kitchen, I fried some bacon after I washed the dishes. I got a few things ready and just a little after F came back, started making pancakes. K wasn’t up, so when I took things to the table, I turned on the lights and heater in the living room.

The pancakes were actually rather nice. They were from a mix that I bought at Costco. You just need to add milk. I ran a few pancakes to the living room, but K didn’t start by herself and F wasn’t quite down yet. He did come down fairly soon, so that was good.

Dinner was nice and got good reviews. I was able to come out to the table before too long and had a couple of pancakes too.

After dinner, I did the dishes and that didn’t take too long. F told K that we are going away tomorrow and she said she understood, but we aren’t sure. He wrote it down for her so hopefully, she won’t be wondering where we are tomorrow.

I went upstairs when I was done and finished the ornament. Woot. I showed it to F and I think he liked it. I discussed my shopping list and when I got to beets he told me that they cause cancer. He’s heard about a Japanese study that claims they cause cancer. I told him that all the research that I’ve seen says that they are a very healthy food. He told me that Canadians mustn’t know much about science or some such thing. I told him that British and US scientists said the same thing. He was quite nasty about it and I told him he didn’t have to eat any.

Later he showed me a scientific precis of a report about beet juice. It didn’t say much about cancer and a whole lot of the information seemed to be inconclusive. I tried to get him to see that beetroot juice and beets aren’t quite the same thing. One measurement of juice mentioned in the article was 450ml of juice…I doubt that I’d eat the same amount of beets needed to make that much juice. Anyway, he seemed to have calmed down since I did read through his study, but it didn’t say what he said it did. The only “bad” things I’ve read about beets are that if you have low blood pressure, they might lower it further and they can cause kidney stones. I’m not prone to them. I have no idea where he gets his ideas!

I took a shower and then came back upstairs. I had planned to watch a TV programme but changed my mind. I wasn’t in the mood anymore. F went to bed early.

We’re probably going to Costco and I’d like to leave a little early tomorrow so I will end this soon and get myself to bed soon. Hopefully, I’ll update when I get back.

Come back later if you like and hear all about my day. Until tomorrow….

How strange, the beet thing!
I was once told by a coworker in Japan that because I ate snow peas (i was eating them raw with other cut up raw veggies), I would never commit suicide. I was, like, what? The other Japanese in the office agreed: people who eat snow peas won't commit suicide. Where do these beliefs come from I wonder.

Wow! I've never heard that one. I think Japanese people are a little more likely to fall for quack science/tales because they are quite trusting. I'm hugely cynical....so I take things like that with more than a grain of salt.

He swears that he read it a few years ago. Probably some talento who didn't want to eat beets made it up!? I have no idea, but in either case, he doesn't have to eat them. All the more for ME!

Oh man, the beet thing cracked me up. My husband does the exact same thing and refuses to eat raw carrots. He said that eating raw carrots are not good for the body and he always lectures me as I love raw carrots with dip. It's amazing how often he comes up withese quack science medical beliefs too.
I've never heard that about beets before either! I couldn't give up beetroot, I love it haha

Hope you have fun on your trip to Costco! 😊

Thanks, Kelly! I've never heard that one about raw carrots either.

When we were on our honeymoon in Canada, my sister presented F with a bowl of raw veggies for him to take some out and have with dip. He was more than surprised....he'd never eaten raw veggies before! He found out that he liked them!

Both he and his mother seem to prefer overcooked until they are flavourless and crunch-less veggies. Although to be fair, his mother does love raw cucumber in summer. I'm with you on the raw carrots. So nice!

I bought beets :-D [Spoiler Alert]

Thanks for visiting!

I'm guessing the beet concern relates to the nitrates in them that naturally occur in beets, but also other healthy vegetables like radishes and spinach. Nitrates are only converted to harmful substances if cooked at high temperatures and charred (and who blackens beets?). And, as you said, you have to consume a huge amount.

One thing that I found when I lived in Japan was that there were a lot of one-off studies done by people at universities who drew a conclusion and published it and it got traction in the media despite not being peer-reviewed or replicated. My private student came up with some of the weirdest stuff in her lessons about health and how something was bad for you which made no sense.

The beets I buy at Costco are pre-cooked and in little serving bags. I open one up and it usually lasts us a couple of days as a side dish. They taste good, and aren't blackened at all...I really don't understand where he gets his crazy ideas. He brought it up before and I actually looked into it then...all the research in English was how healthy they are and how they do good things for people, with the caveats I mentioned in my post.

Between the three of us, no one is getting anywhere near 450 ml of beet juice in one day.

Japan really is rife with these strange scientific "facts".

Interesting about your student. I had a few doozies over the years too!
